In its first quarter itself, Paloma's Wild City mix connects the low-end rattling bass of Joy Orbison's 'Flight.fm' to the tribal house of Nick Léon's 'Xtasis' before proceeding to the melodic runs of Charanjit Singh. This itself clues you in on the quick genre-hopping that the DJ, surfer, model and TV host does on the mix, which reels dancers in with the popular, more accessible numbers before going on to deeper cuts of acid house, melodic techno and adjacent styles.  Taken from her performance on New Year's at Sri Lanka's Closenberg Hotel, the regular spot for Tropical Wax, the party-throwing and lifestyle collective co-founded by Paloma, the mix progressively echoes the shifting of night into the morning, turning the mood gradually to the introspective as the psychedelic textures of Floating Points' 'Fast Forward' usher in the final quarter of the mix. "Think Pachanga Boys' Time…but with soul." The register chimed loudly. He glanced up at the queue of customers steadily gathering and took a deep breath. It was going to be a long hot day. The shop was small and crowded, outside in the street it was scorching, the block was on fire in the midst of the summer and everyone and everything was looking for relief. He would be their answer… He wasn't sure how it had come to be this way, that he was the one to serve. Yet here he was… From time to time he'd have to check himself, check anything, check something. Then the chime would ring out again… The made ace, insanely brilliant Brian d'Souza aka Auntie Flo, releases ‘Aker The Lion God' on 31st October, a precursor to his upcoming album ‘In My Dreams (I'm A Bird and I'm Free)', out on 21 November.  PRE-SAVE ALBUM ~ Inspired by field recordings from New Zealand and Brazil, the environmental sounds of a conch shell and a bassline influenced by Charanjit Singh's proto-acid house work is worked into some altogether more ethereal.

Today's Lost in Music on the Breakfast Show had a bit of a twist. Instead of focusing on a genre, theme or decade of music, tom focused on the sound of the Roland TB303 bassline synthesizer for international 303 appreciation day (the 30th of March) The TB303 is by now a legendary instrument as it is responsible for the sound behind some of the biggest dance music records in history and has been used widely in pop music since its release in 1982 This wasnt always the case though. The TB303 was originally designed to replicate the sound of bass guitar so that it could replace bass players in a band. It turned out that it did a pretty terrible job of imitating a bass guitar though and pretty quickly these machines ended up stocking the shelves in second hand shops all over the world. Despite it's shortcomings at replicating a bass guitar, the 303 has a unique sound character of its own. This was first put to use on record by Indian musician Charanjit Singh who is credited as the first person to combine a 303 with electronic beats in 1982, predating the birth of the Genre Acid House that would make the 303 world famous by 5 years. Acid House arrived though when a TB303 ended up in the hands of some boundary pushing young kids in Chicago who had a group called Phuture. They realized that the 303 could make a pretty interesting and quite addictive squelching sound if you pushed it to its limits and in doing so they created what is widely understood to be the first acid house tune Acid Tracks. in 1988 a DJ called A Guy Called Gerald used the TB303 to amazing effect in creating Voodoo Ray, a track which is considered one of the most popular and influential Acid House tunes and which introduced the Acid House sound to the masses in the UK. From its initial rejection as an instrument that doesn't do what it supposed to do, through its adoption as the source sound of one of dance music's most influential genres, The TB303 went on to be used widely by producers of Pop Music over the years. It can be heard in classic pop hits such as Orange Juice's 'Rip it Up And Start Again,' and modern pop music by the likes of Tame Impala in their track 'Breath Deeper' and Aaliyah in her track 'Try Again'. We hope you enjoyed this look back at the legacy of this peculiar and influential instrument on this week's 'Lost In music'.

Bicep - "Sundial" from the 2021 album Isles on Ninja Tune. London-based electronic duo Bicep dig into their Northern Ireland childhoods on their latest LP Isles, and today's Song of the Day takes us from Ireland to India. Belfast-born producers Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson used a snippet of the song "Jab Andhera Hota Hai" from the 1973 Bollywood film Raja Rani.  “This is probably one of the simplest tracks on the album, it grew from a faulty Jupiter 6 arp recording. Our trigger isn't working properly and the arp skips notes randomly. This was a small segment taken from a recording of Andy just playing the arp live whilst we were just trying to figure out what was going wrong. We actually loved what it had produced and wrote some chords around it, guided by the feeling of this recording.” “In regards to the sampling, Indian music has always fascinated us since the blog days, discovering it was the possible birthplace of Acid house via Charanjit Singh’s Ten Ragas to a disco beat.” “Living in East London, Indian influence and music is everywhere and over the past few years we’ve both become huge fans of Bollywood film scores, particularly the female soprano performances. The haunting melancholic epicness really strikes a chord with both of us. We feel we can relate to how similar it is to the Irish folk we grew up around from the likes of the Clannad.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As we try to differentiate our mix curation with the inclusion of our first mix from a label instead of it being representative of a single individual, none felt as unique in that sub-category as Amarrass Records. Started by Ankur Malhotra and Ashutosh Sharma in 2009, the label, management, booking and vinyl pressing agency stood apart from most of the music industry, which was looking at the West-imported strands of music modern Indian culture, by turning its focus towards the 21st-century face of India’s traditional arts that had been pushed further into the fringes. Highlighting that very face in all its variety, the label has stitched together works from its artists and events for their Wild City mix. The selections make the case that even the traditional arts aren’t without modern adventures as Amarrass’ early signing the late Padma Shri award-winner Kamaicha-player Sakar Khan conjures a wall of lute’s screeching, reminiscent of Steve Reich with ‘Train No. 2’. The contemporary re-contextualisation of folk arts continues through artists like Barmer Boys, one of the label’s most popular offering, meanders through the placating Malian kora-playing with works by Vieux Farka Tourè and Madou Sidiki Diabatè before offering some of the folk music in its most puristic shades. From the latter, the prowess of Lakha Khan, the recent Padma Shri winner and one of the last Sindhi Sarangi players, and Rehmat-e-Nusrat cut through. Bringing the colourful journey to a conclusion, Ravana’s dub backdrop sneaks in behind the hyperlocal spoken-word style of Jumme Khan, from their collaborative album ‘Dubfounded’ before a final flourish with the legendary Charanjit Singh, the Indian pioneer whose ‘10 Ragas To A Disco Beat’ is now celebrated as the first acid-house album. Wie is deze man? Johanz lacht ingetogen. 'Nu gaat het nerdie worden. Ben je er klaar voor?' Enjoy deze aflevering met Thee J Johanz bij BETER OP PAPIER! S/O naar onze matties van DATmag. en tech-team Eric Imthorn, Jasper Bosgraaf en Irie Weergang. Thee J Johanz is a producer, DJ and sound engineer from Holland, who has been a part of the electronic music scene, right from its early acid house days. A keen music lover, he still to this day is pushing boundaries. And one thing he's especially keen on, is the innovative electronic funk and disco sounds which were created in India in the 70s and 80s. Those who've been following the re-birth of acid house godfather Charanjit Singh will also know that he's a part of his on-stage act, controlling drums, live-mixing and generally being an all round synth geek. We first saw him DJ under his Bollywood moniker in a small basement in New Delhi. Over a year later he was back with Charanjit Singh and we asked him to play the final set of Magnetic Fields Festival. A real peak time groover, we wouldn't have had it any other way. Always exploring new frontiers, he dropped jams with complex rhythms and deep basslines, taking influence from Detroit techno, modern bass music, Latino, funky, deep, Balearic and disco. Wild City #070, is our first ever mix made up exclusively of Bollywood tracks. Well, almost. Of course it includes a bit of Charanjit Singh's 'Ten Ragas To A Disco Beat' too. Operating at such a high level of 'over the top'; Bollywood still to this day manages to infiltrate communities the world over - particularly with its prolific disco and funk infused sounds of the 70s and 80s. Sadly, a completely forgotten sound within modern day soundtracks. Praise be to Johanz, for putting together an hour of his favourite Bollywood disco/soundtrack moments for all of our ears. As is only possible, this mix represents only the very tip of the Bollywood disco-funk iceberg, so we expect to see more DJs busting out Desi disco in the near future. For now, let’s dig this: "Although I play various styles of music, this mix in particular is more in the Bollywood electro, disco, funk, soul style that I once played in Delhi. Many people came to me at the party to give me compliments. It was all very rewarding, and a great pleasure to join the experience." The A/C did its best to keep up in the studio, but only a cold glass of lemonade could keep us cool after two hours of heat brought forth this week. The show starts in form with a rare gem from Charanjit Singh and moves into new tracks from Noisia, J Dilla, Matthew Dear, Hexstatic […]
