The holidays. Stressful and too over-commercialized to bring the same heartwarming sensations of years past. However, with your loved ones in toe and the gift of giving, it can still be special. For instance, Alicia and I just got drunk the day after Thanksgiving and made this for you. Plus some cameos! If Hollywood has taught me anything, it's that everyone loves excessive cameos! St. Nicholas' Day has passed, but we're not done with Christmas visitors yet. Santa has taken a few different forms over the centuries, and he's got an army of companions and alternates, too. Santa Claus takes inspiration from a variety of European folk traditions, and many of these old traditions have survived with modifications in the Christian era. In this episode we talk about a lot of our historically celebrated holiday gift bearers: - the Krampus of Central Europe; - the Ded Moroz of Russian winters; - the Icelandic Jolasveinar (Yule Trolls), the 13 hungry brothers who each stay a fortnight in the darkest part of the winter; - the truly monstrous Joulupukki (Yule Goat) of Finnish tradition, thankfully he's softened up over the years; - Mos Gerila, the Romanian Communist holiday hunk;- the sloppy Christmas poop-log known as Tio de Nadal;- Germany's less celebrated Belsnickel was made famous by The Office's Dwight Schrute;- Italy's own Befana, the guide for the three magi;- and we certainly can't leave out the controversial Black Pete, but we're pleased to report that his image is getting a favourable update. All these get a special moment in the spotlight in addition to the time we spend exploring the real and imaginary histories of jolly old Saint Nicholas who eventually came to be known as Sinterklaas, or Santa Claus. Naturally, this must include a discussion of the history of Chris Kringle (lit: "the Christ Child").All this and more.... December 1927. Santa, followed by a group of local children, walked to the First National Bank of Texas. He entered the bank, leaving the children outside, accompanied by three large Elves. Greetings of “hello Santa” met with a shouting Santa telling everyone to “grab some sky” in a less than jolly tone. This started shootings, manhunts, car chases, and injuries. A total of eight were wounded. Including Santa and his stealing elves, six men would end up dead. Finding themselves on the ultimate Naughty or Nice list. Was a Chris Kringle lynching due? Ryan is a modern country outlaw who's been on the road for much of the last decade. Years of touring have made him keen on working hard and playing hard. His steel cold vocals and Chris Kringle beard make him an easy guy to like and have a conversation with, so please enjoy my chat with Ryan Chrys.
Josh is joined by recurring guest Daniel Lima for a very logical double feature episode. First (Beginning-22:58), they talk about "Fatman" and whether it does enough with its concept of the everyman Santa Clause being hunted by a hitman, if watching Mel Gibson play Chris Kringle was too big of an ask, Walton Goggins' committed performance, what the movie's economic message might have been and much more! Then (22:59-end) they discuss "Antebellum" and try to figure out what the movie's message about racism might have been and whether they even are glad the movie was made. Spoilers throughout! (We especially recommend not learning anything about Antebellum before seeing it or listening to the pod. Also, there is a spoiler for M Night Shyamalan's The Village during the this podcast, so now you are warned.)

A very woke holiday special from Simon and Jay!
ERRY THANG JOLLY BAYBEE. The squad is talkin' tinsel, menorahs, Chris Kringle, and Pollyanna. AL + MB talk gift giving, traditions, and the best way to spice up your holiday party!
Santa Claus, also known as St. Nicholas, Chris Kringle, Father Christmas, and by many other names by children everywhere, just spent the night delivering gifts and good cheer around the world. Santa invited Mark to spend the day at the North Pole, and Mark couldn't wait to take a test drive in that sleigh!
Brofessor Jones and the Diggs are back this week with quite possibly the funniest Christmas movie around: Christmas Vacation!!! Is Clark Griswold the last true family man? How frightened might you be to discover a squirrel in your home? Is Cousin Eddie the greatest comedic character ever? This week we are discussing all things Griswold, Chris Kringle and possibly a few last minute Episode 8 thoughts!!! It'll be the most fun you've had since Bing Crosby danced with Danny Freaking Kaye!!!!! 0:00 - Bro Down 22:30 - Christmas Vacation
Aasia LaShay Bullock and Jon are in agreement when it comes to Santa: He is not necessary. If you want to raise your children sans Claus, then you should do it and save yourself the trouble of spinning progressively more complicated lies. Brandon Shockney does not agree with this opinion. Brandon's grip on the joys of Santa is like that of a bear trap upon your very leg. It is unyielding. It is dangerous. And it is probably going to kill us with time. But enough about Brandon being crazy. It's Christmas time at the Tanner house once more! "Arrest Ye Merry Gentlemen" sees the Nuggets turning a sickly yellow at the very mention of old Chris Kringle, while Jesse and Michelle are finding themselves the hostage of a wildly cranky Mickey Rooney. Will anyone make it to Christmas Day alive? Doubtful! In other news, Aasia is taking us on a tour of hands free wine tech while waxing on her love for teen witches. And that movie we discuss? It's called 'The Star' and Oprah is not playing one of the animals, spoiler alert. Spoiler alert, Keegan-Michael Key is the dove, and Kelly Clarkson is playing a Goddamn HORSE. Did we mention how thankful we are for the 101 RATINGS in the iTunes Store? Because we're incredibly thankful and are so happy to have you as a listener. "Me?" YES, YOU. Thank you! XOXO
Download | Subscribe (Free) In this episode, Rev. Beverly Gibson and Johnny Gwin recap the well-known Christmas story of Mary, Joseph and the birth of Jesus. First thru the eyes of Christ Church Cathedral kid's pageant, then from insights of English-writer Jeanette Winterson, and finally from the personal experiences of the show hosts. Examining all of the complex events that had to happen to make the birth of Christ happen and fulfill an ancient messianic prophecy is stunning and fascinating. Have you ever taken the time to re-read this story and look at the logistics and all the conscious choices these people had to make to get to that moment, that stable, that birth, and the broadcast of the news that billions of people celebrate each year? And we think our build up to Christmas is full of drama. Plus, Beverly and Johnny discuss Joseph's kindness, Mary's grace, and their simpatico relationship that endured immense struggle and pressure. Lastly, Beverly shares how Christmas Eve Mass can be a mystical and spiritual moment of rebirth for all of us. Click to read Rev. Gibson's full worship notes Help support Pulpit To Pew with our Patreon campaign {Editor's note: This is an excerpt from Rev. Gibson's worship notes} Perhaps the greatest gift our children will give us this Sunday is the gift of time-time given and spent in attention to one another, concentrating on what is precious, worth our loving, and worth our whole lives. This gift is the best gift you can give anyone this Christmas season, to be spent telling and listening to stories, setting aside differences and enjoying laughter and good company. If you were to read this week's lessons from scripture, you would find: Isaiah's prophecy that God would send a sign to the house of David in the young woman who would bear a son she would name Immanuel; Paul's confirmation to the Church in Rome that Jesus Christ was this prophesied son; and, Matthew's recounting of the appearance of an angel in a dream to Joseph, telling him that the child in Mary's womb is that prophesied Emmanuel, "God with us." The angel's message to Joseph changed all his plans. He did marry Mary, and he named the child Jesus, as the angel had instructed. But those changes in plan were only the beginning! God is always about changing our plans, even though we resist change at every turn. Accept God's life-changing gifts this Christmas, thankfully and joyfully.
