Moopsy! As Lower Decks is back for the last time, we're looking at three animated Star Trek episodes, specifically ones about strange creatures. The Eye of the Beholder brings us weird dopey-looking elephant slug things who are actually more evolved than humans! A Tribble Called Quest brings us all kinds of mutant tribbles including a bizarre horrible Tribble with a face! Ugh… I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Scream brings us an adorable monster in Moopsy, who may have done one or two things wrong. Moopsy! 00:03:55 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying: Still Wakes the Deep, Kew Gardens' Halloween Trail 00:09:58 Star Trek: The Animated Series “The Eye of the Beholder” 00:35:37 Star Trek: Prodigy “A Tribble Called Quest” 00:56:03 Star Trek: Lower Decks “I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Scream” Talking points include: Pokémon, which Pokémon wore sunglasses the best? Dave Willis, Still Wakes the Deep, big ups to The Chinese Room, Alien Isolation, Kew Gardens, Merry Xmas Everyone, that song from X-Men Apocalypse or whatever one it was, Charlie tries to remember X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Roger Dean album covers, sand trouts in Dune, that one Flight of the Conchords song where a leg gets eaten, Play-Doh, Morph, vast, desolate landscapes, does The Federation still have Timpsons? You don't put the Scottish in a zoo, space zoos, Equilibrium, at some point Charlie should watch Star Trek, dunking on Chakotay, picking up a story partway through, Peter David's weird universal Majel Barrett thing, X-Men, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Todd in the Shadows, Miles gets angry at Charlie, the show and himself for having to listen to Oliver Anthony Music, Anthony Michael Hall, self-destructive insubordination at work, bones and teeth aren't the same thing, Charlie's childhood rabbit and the little bunny gulag, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Nolan North, Vegeta & Goku workforce dynamics, trying to stop from having any Big Bang Theory rants, can you tell Charlie's vamping for time because he forgot who wrote I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream? The Spoony Experiment, Awesomed by Comics, Miles was right to be a despairing heap on a men's room floor given the election results. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: While I don't recall Karate Kid being in a zoo in The Legion of Super-Heroes, there was a tragic story about Beast Boy of Lallor dying defending a girl from a zoo animal. The fish that nibble you in those baths are not piranhas. DO NOT have piranhas nibble your feet. Oliver Anthony Music has since given up music, I assume it was pressure from us at Casual Trek. Blonde, beautiful, and often deadly on screen, Sterling started in theatre, but made a name for herself portraying tough dames, femme fatales, and sexy seductresses in films such as “Caged,” “Ace In the Hole” and “The High and the Mighty.” However, her upbringing was quite different from these wayward women she played so convincingly; she was actually from a very wealthy and prominent family. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're maintaining course on our dark path down creepy 70's  sci fi as we explore two trailblazers in the world of robotics and AI: 1973's Westworld starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Dick Van Patten, Steve Franken and Star Trek's Majel Barrett  up against 1975's The Stepford Wives starring Katherine Ross, Paula Prentiss, Peter Masterson, Tina Louise, Nanette Newman and a whole slew of middle aged men to prove that men can design women better than anybody.  My guests today are series regulars, David Johnson, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.  Before we roll, the synopses:  Set in a disturbingly near future, Westworld transports rich and lonely swinging singles Peter Martin and John Blane into a theme park /resort called Westworld populated by incredibly life like robots, including a black clad Gunslinger,  who inhabit an 1880's  Western town and are there to be shot, fought and screwed to the whims and pleasure  of the resort's guests. But when the robots start to malfunction and go on a rampage against all humans, guess who feels really stupid?  The Stepford Wives tells of the Eberharts, Walter and Johanna and their two daughters who escape the rat race of Manhattan and move to idyllic suburban town of Stepford, Connecticut. It's a perfect suburban dream for Walter but it turns out to be a nightmare for Joanna when she finds out that all the women are subservient, hard cleaning, perfectly domesticated sex objects for their husbands. The reason?  (Spoiler Alert!) THEY'VE BEEN TURNED INTO ROBOTS! Which robot movie wins?Find out!

Star Trek: The Original Series, Series 2, Episode 14. First broadcast on Friday, 22 December 1967. When simple, mild-mannered lackwit Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) stabs three women to death in the space of a couple of hours, the crew of the Enterprise become suspicious enough to start an investigation, which mostly consists of getting Majel Barrett to read them a bunch of Wikipedia articles. But just as we're all about to nod off, someone claims responsibility for the murders — beloved childhood plaything Piglet (John Fielder), who immediately inputs himself into the ship's computer and attempts to generate terror by making a series of increasingly unimaginative violent threats. Understandably, the crew respond to all this by taking a bunch of drugs and waiting for the closing credits to kick in. Which is how we recommend that you respond to this episode as well.

Albie was seen three times in Star Trek history, first in the TNG episode "The Cost of Living" as The Juggler, then returned two more times in Voyager, first in "Macrocosm" as the Tak Tak Consul and again as Tash in "The Voyager Conspiracy." We learn about his traumatic childhood that put him on the path of performing as a magician and actor, working as part of the musical & dance act The Mums, what he learned from his first acting teacher John De Lancie AKA Q, a fun story about another Star Trek alumni in Jason Alexander, working on "Freddy's Nightmares," Doug Jones in "Batman Returns," "Columbo" with Peter Falk, "Murder, She Wrote" with Angela Lansbury, and John Lithgow in "Ricochet." From there, it's onto Trek talk, as we learn what it's like juggling for hours in alien makeup and taking a mud bath with Majel Barrett, working with Ethan Phillips as the Tak Tak Consul, and his secret FOURTH Star Trek off-screen appearance that was a crucial element for the VOY episode "Natural Now." The hostage nobody wants is none other than Lwaxana Troi in Majel Barrett's triumphant return to the role her husband Gene described as the Auntie Mame of the Galaxy. The Ferengi don't put on too good a look here, with Damon Tog capturing mother and daughter Troi and chess club boy toy Riker before any nookie can occur. Lwaxana distracts with the Ferengi version of oral while Wesley Crusher trains for his own oral exam, if you know what I mean. Everything works out in the end when Picard professes his love of his big ole warp engines and Wesley gets promoted to full-on ensign, much to our very special Canadian guest correspondent Shelly Coley-Donohue. 2021 marks 30 years since the passing of Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy. Rightly we celebrate his great legacy in the creation of Star Trek, but his life was far from just about a 60s Sci-fi TV show, a story worthy of a Biopic you might say? In the that vein who would you cast as Gene, who would you cast as Majel Barrett in a warts and all Biopic of the father of Trek? A Big Thank You to those who provided some great suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But I want more? This week's Community Questions are: What are the bills you want to see paid in Lower Decks (and Picard) seasons two? What are your thoughts on the Mudd's Market Into Darkness bundle? Did you purchase it---and if so, which options did you decide on? Are you hoping to see Star Trek characters in Fortnite? Who would you most like to see? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Paramount+, Essentially By Elio Lleo ViacomCBS continues to try luring in more subscribers, by offering up new pricing tiers and teasing a slate of new content coming out over the summer. First up: the new “low-cost” option for US subscribers, starting at $4.99. This “Essential Plan” is ad-supported, including some sports and on-demand options. However, it will no longer include local live television station programming. I swear every one of those stars is an asterisk. Image: ViacomCBS, via Deadline. Keep in mind if you already have the limited commercial plan, you won't lose any features…however, that plan will no longer be offered to new subscribers. The “Premium Plan” will cost US subscribers $9.99 a month, is commercial-free with on demand entertainment (including 4K titles), more sports, and live streaming of local stations. Trek's Prodigious New Talent By Elio Lleo On Monday, June 14, ViacomCBS dropped the cast list for Star Trek: Prodigy–the first animated show specifically geared towards children [no, TAS wasn't written for kids; we've explored that in our Patreon exclusive podcast: After Hours -Ed.]. The six main voices joining Kate Mulgrew have been announced including Jason Mantzoukas–who you might recognize from shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The League, and as the voice of the foul-mouthed Rex Splode on the Amazon animated series Invincible. Variety also shared the details about the characters including some species names, character backgrounds, and some first-look images. Aren't you a little young for nebula coffee? Image: ViacomCBS, via Variety. Romijn Charts Out Strange New Worlds By Cat Hough In a recent interview with Looper.com, Rebecca Romijn confirms what we have long suspected regarding the format and episodic nature of Strange New Worlds. She said, "it's in keeping with the original series — they're standalone episodes. It's a little bit lighter. We are visiting planets. We are visiting colonies, and we are so proud of our work so far." The show will cover ten years of missions on the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D) with Captain Pike, before Kirk takes the helm. Romijn plays first officer Number One, originally played by Majel Barrett.  Whatever you've hiding, Mr. Spock, I hope you brought enough to share. Image: ViacomCBS, via Looper. No release date has yet been announced for Strange New Worlds, other than it's expected some time in 2022. But it appears that filming may be coming to a close. Romijn told Looper she was able to catch a break in filming episode seven of ten for Strange New Worlds in order to promote her new film, the safari thriller Endangered Species.  Bills To Pay in Lower Decks Season 2 By Rosko McQueen It's the question that can foster debate, cause rifts in friendships, or spark outrage on social media: what's your favorite episode of Star Trek? Mike McMahon, the creator of Lower Decks was asked exactly this by the folks at IGN. Thanks to his breadth of knowledge, he had an answer for each series, while also throwing out some teasers for Lower Decks season 2.  "Shades of Gray," Mariner? Really? Image: ViacomCBS, via IGN. Mike spoke about the structure of Star Trek, and the nature of standalone episodes that add to the depth of the characters–but not in a way that the audience needs a refresh at the start of each new episode. What that means for Season 2 of Lower Decks is we have the setup of the first 10 episodes. So where to from here?  “These last three episodes created this crescendo of, ‘Look, this is what the show is. Let's go. And we keep that up. How does Mariner feel about Boimler taking off? How is Boimler doing on the Titan? So, [we're] still doing standalone, still episodes that feel episodic, but the characters don't forget. We haven't forgotten what we've said [in] Season 1.” That leads us to our first community question this week:    What are the bills you want to see paid in Lower Decks (and Picard) seasons two? Let us know in the comment section for this episode at priorityonepodcast.com or by replying to our community question post on our social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. GoldDerby.com's Rob Licuria sat down with Star Trek: Discovery's Visual Effects Supervisor Jason Zimmerman to discuss the process behind building a new universe in the Star Trek multiverse–specifically, after jumping into the future in Discovery Season 3. Licuria also chatted with Glenn Hetrick about Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery on June 9th. In a recent episode of the official Star Trek Podcast: The Pod Directive, Tawny and Paul chat with Alex Kurtzman to discuss the importance of Trek, the production process, and storytelling in the Star Trek universe…and how desperate he is to produce a musical story. We'll be deconstructing the interview in our Patreon Exclusive show, After Hours, this week. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Mudd's Multiversal Market Madness By Shane Hoover It looks like Harcourt Fenton Mudd has reared his profiteering head once again in the Star Trek Online C-Store. From June 10 through June 24, players who have about $150 burning a hole in their pockets can purchase the new Into Darkness and Beyond Choice Pack. Like previous Mudd's Choice Packs, you can choose three out of eight options including ships, upgrade tokens, C-Store coupons, or master keys. Oh shut up, Dwight. Image: ViacomCBS, via CNET. But if you wanted to buy them all...well, Cryptic has another purchase option, the MEGA Into Darkness and Beyond Bundle. That's right: for the eye-watering regular price of $600 you can purchase every one of the eight choices offered! But act fast–it's only $300, or 50% off, until June 24th.  That leads us to our next community question this week:    What are your thoughts on the Mudd's Market Into Darkness bundle? Did you purchase it–and if so, which options did you decide on? Fleet Command Searches For The Next Generation By Elio Lleo Star Trek Fleet Command has dropped the second part of its Star Trek: The Next Generation arc with Section Patch 31. Featured in the update are new stories and missions to rescue Worf or Picard. Who will you choose to save first? "Who? Never heard of them." Image: ViacomCBS, via Memory Alpha. The new update includes new officers, new ship projectiles, fifteen new missions and more. Also, if you're eager to learn about the team behind the game, you can trek out their “Meet the Team” blog featuring Senior QA Tester Alannah. It's the Armada's 8th Anniversary!  By Cat Hough Image: Jason Smith, via Priority One Armada. June 19th is our 80s-themed costume competition. And you should definitely trek out the Livestream this week as we feature our new intro video produced by Anthony! Well, We Had To Cover Fortnite Eventually By Elio Lleo June 8th saw the release of a new season for the hugely popular battle royale shooter Fortnite. Why would Priority One Podcast care, you ask? Well this season sees the game's island invaded by aliens in flying saucers, and Fortnite has a well earned reputation for pulling in characters from all over popular culture. For example, this season sees Rick Sanchez of Rick & Morty [Drink! -Ed.]  making an appearance alongside Superman. But the hot rumor in Trek circles is that Star Trek just might make an appearance on the island this season. Which makes a great Community Question for our listeners this week! Are you hoping to see Star Trek characters in Fortnite? Who would you most like to see? Quick Gaming News Roundup Now, here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. Links, of course, will be in our show notes! Time to head to Risa, break out your longboard and get ready for some dance contests! Harvey Jason, Felix Leech from "The Big Goodbye" on Star Trek TNG One of the best episodes from the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was "The Big Goodbye." This was the series first intensive look into the holodecks, and it gave us an unforgettable film noir story that featured today's guest, Harvey Jason. Mr. Jason played Felix Leech; a Peter Lorre-inspired character who, along with Lawrence Tierney, terrorize Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, and Gates McFadden in the first TNG episode to feature Dixon Hill.  Harvey tells us all about working on this episode, working with the stars, and his impressions of the set and actors. We also discuss another Gene Roddenberry project that Harvey worked on, "Genesis II," in which he acted alongside Majel Barrett and Ted Cassidy. These days, Harvey runs a very successful book store with his son, Mystery Pier Books, and tells us all about the celebrity clientele, his favorite books and offers some reading suggestions for you.  Plus, stories about Michael Caine, and memories of working on "Wonder Woman," "Charlie's Angels," "The Love Boat," the Jurassic Park sequel "The Lost World" with Steven Spielberg, and much more! Tread Perilously's month of "haunted" television heads back to Star Trek with the original series episode "Wolf in the Fold." When the Enterprise arrives in orbit around Argelius II for "therapeutic shore leave," the men aboard the ship beam down to enjoy the legendary pleasures and "generous" women the planet has to offer. Scotty, in particular, finds himself charmed by a belly dancer. But soon, she's found dead and Scotty is spotted with the murder weapon. Such crimes are unheard of on Argelius II, but a tribunal of sorts is convened. Will Scotty prove to be a mad killer or is some other evil at work? And will it haunt the ship before too long? Erik and Justin immediately identify Argelius II as a Gene Roddenberry sex planet. John De Lancie's misadventures with the My Little Pony fandom comes up. Erik ends up reviewing the Jeff Goldblum episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Roddenberry's screwed up sexual politics become an unavoidable topic. Justin cannot get past the fact guest actor John Fiedler is also the voice of Piglet. Erik once again sings the praises of Majel Barrett's computer voice and the pair discover a concept more ridiculous than Jack the Ripper possessing the Enterprise.

Primitive Culture: A Star Trek History and Culture Podcast

Cast Changes in Star Trek. When Star Trek’s original pilot, “The Cage,” was rejected by NBC, Gene Roddenberry was forced to rethink the acting lineup for his new show. Jeffrey Hunter’s Christopher Pike was out, replaced by the more charismatic William Shatner as James T. Kirk. Gone, too, was Roddenberry’s partner, Majel Barrett, leaving Leonard Nimoy as the only cast member to survive the recasting process. It was the first in a series of periodic reshuffles that have marked the franchise throughout its long history, many the result of bitter behind-the-scenes disputes between actors and producers. Most recently, the Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind has shone a light on the circumstances surrounding Terry Farrell’s abrupt departure from the show at the end of its penultimate season—a subject that is clearly emotive for those involved, even more than 20 years later. In this episode of Primitive Culture, recorded live in London following the first public screening of the Deep Space Nine documentary, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Carlos Miranda, Drew Barker, and Andy Poulastides to discuss Star Trek’s reshuffling of personnel in front of the camera. We consider the introduction of Worf to DS9 and Seven of Nine to Voyager with the goal of boosting viewing figures, the abrupt departures of Gates McFadden from The Next Generation, Terry Farrell’s exit from DS9 and Jennifer Lien’s Voyager farewell, and the ways in which modern TV sensibilities—in the wake of shows such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones—have upended long-held assumptions about the longevity of series regulars.

We're joined by guest Ellie, who watched "The Cage" for the first time, and is here to say what everyone's thinking: the Talosians' heads look like butts.  We also cover important issues, such as:  wigs shorts in space Number One, Michael Burnham and stoic female characters wild speculation about Discovery's approach to Chris Pike, Number One and Spock how does "The Cage" manage to get more sexist with every passing decade? they may have giant brains, but maybe the Talosians aren't actually that bright AND MORE Further show notes can be found on Tumblr.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 1, Episode 15: Will You Take My Hand? There was a lot to say about Star Trek: Discovery S1E15, which is titled Will You Take My Hand? It was a season finale, after all, right? In fact, like last week, it took extra time to get this episode to you as a result. More about Season 1, Episode 14: The War Without, The War Within Before we get going and talk about the season finale, we got more feedback about last week’s episode and some pre-finale speculation. We share that feedback about the penultimate episode! Fred’s pics… Part 5! Fred from The Netherlands shared more pics again this week, showing us more wonderful use of lighting in the season finale! I have used one of those pics as the featured image for this episode, and a couple more below. If you want to see them all, you can see Fred’s image collection from the episode here. You’re no Captain Georgiou, Emperor!!! It seems that not all Starfleet captains from the Mirror Universe are good at hiding in plain sight! During his time in the Prime Universe, Lorca was able to pass himself as a Federation captain, albeit with some unconventional tendencies. Emperor Georgiou, on the other hand, doesn’t even TRY to hide her true self, despite Admiral Cornwell installing her as the long thought dead Captain Georgiou. The way she conducted herself on the Bridge was quite shocking, but also right in character. I was a bit surprised that she survived the episode, but when I think of the possibility of her as this crew’s longtime antagonist, like a Q, Gul Dukat or even Daniels, it makes me giddy! I still wonder if she will end up an agent of Section 31, or running the whole thing. Maybe she’ll try to start a new empire? Who knows, but I look forward to seeing her again! NCC-17… Yup, that’s right!!! At the end of this episode, Discovery answers a distress call from… you guessed it… the USS Enterprise NCC-1701!!! Now, in this era, sometime around the Kirk is not the Captain of the Enterprise yet. Instead, his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike, is the Captain. However, Sarek’s son and Burnham’s adopted brother, Spock, does serve on this era’s Enterprise. We can only hope we’ll see this Enterprise in Season 2. Will Zachary Quinto reprise his role, or will they cast someone else as another version of Spock? And will it be Bruce Greenwood, who plays Pike in the 2009 and 2013 reboot films, reprising the role, or will it be someone new? What about the enigmatic Number One, who was played by the late Majel Barrett in The Cage (the original TOS pilot)? Some called the appearance of the Enterprise as fan service, and Ruthie is a little trepidatious on how this might affect canon next season. I say bring it on!

The Edge: A Star Trek Discovery Podcast

The Cage Commentary. Much has been said of Star Trek: Discovery's origins. One of the biggest influences from inside the established canon seems to be the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage." Discovery shares that episode's time period, but the influences do not stop there. Even the character of Burnham has her roots in Majel Barrett's Number One. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Mike Schindler, Amy Nelson, Aaron Harvey, and Brandon-Shea Mutala provide a commentary for "The Cage." We discuss how the episode compares to the final version of The Original Series, how the design of the show differs from that of Discovery, and speculate on the origins of some Discovery characters as they relate to the very first Star Trek story. After a one week hiatus, the Trek Geeks are back in their podcast chairs and ready to discuss the latest amazing episode from Star Trek Continues. Episode 7 of this highly acclaimed fan production tackles a very interesting and controversial topic that began almost 50 years ago with the final episode of TOS, "Turnabout Intruder." In "Embracing the Winds," we finally find out why female officers have never been in command of a constitution class starship! Additionally, we see yet another ship--the U.S.S. Hood--fall prey to a mysterious anomaly. We think you will agree that STC has once again given us an amazing episode filled with drama and awesome guest stars! In addition to a spoiler-filled rundown of the plot, Dan and Bill discuss the myriad of Star Trek themed easter eggs in this episode and as always discuss whether or not it IS Star Trek! Plus, there are lots of interesting news topics to discuss including the pushed back premier date of Star Trek Discovery to May 2017, the debut of Star Trek Online to Xbox One and PS4 consoles and we may even get to hear our beloved Majel Barrett as the computer voice in DSC and maybe even your mobile phone someday! All this and more as Dan returns from Walt Disney World! "Happiest Place on Earth?" No way! That's right here, rejoining Bill in Episode 76 of the Trek Geeks Podcast! SPECIAL THANKS Music for the Trek Geeks Podcast is graciously provided by our friends, the band FIVE YEAR MISSION! We can't begin to thank Noah, Fark, Patrick, Mike, and Chris enough for allowing us to use all of their amazing music for the podcast every week. Please, do yourself a favor and check all of their albums: Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, The Trouble with Tribbles, and of course, Spock's Brain! Get yourself on over to FiveYearMission.net and get ALL of their music. We promise, you'll love it. Here's a rundown of which 5YM tracks we used in this episode!
