Have a comment? I'd love to hear from you! Welcome to the first episode of 2025. Apologies for the delay since Ep.5. I was in Nepal climbing mountains over November and December... In this episode, I welcome Aaron Hopkins, sucessful PT and gym owner. I interviewed him a few months ago and we had a great laugh and were very much of the same mind when discussing all things health/fitness. He will be joining me as co-host, so i'm really looking forward to recording with him.Find out more about Aaron here: https://www.pt-u.co.uk/Amongst other things, we discussed:New Year New Me! (yawn!)  Setting 2025 Health Goals: Discussing how to set realistic and achievable health goals for the new year. Fads like Dry January etc - more harm than Good?People starting new habits : Nutrition Trends: Exploring emerging nutrition trends for 2025, such as plant-based diets, intermittent fasting, or personalised nutrition plans.Effective Workout Routines: Highlighting new and effective workout routines or exercises for different fitness levels and goals.Doing too much, at one time: Motivation and Accountability: Strategies for staying motivated and accountable throughout the year. Tech and Fitness: Discussing the role of technology and apps in monitoring fitness progress and enhancing workouts. Big business, but data for data's sake? Watches, rings, apps, HRV useful:Over Christmas, we had a great question from a listener, we discussed this too:"Sleep/nutrition/rest are critically important, especially when compared to our younger days. So my question for the podcast is this: Because there are now more mature people training harder than ever before, are we entering uncharted territority in terms of our awareness of training/recovery for middle -aged athletes? Sure, there have been a small number of older athletes for a long time, but I suspect there have never before been so many middle-aged, 'normal' folk who are continuing to train hard alongside their daily lives. Is the coaching/nutrition industry up to speed on this? Is it even being recognised, let alone being catered for?"I hope you find this useful and enjoyed the podcast. Of course, it's a nonsense - different styling suits different people. Short, tall, thin, round, dark-skinned, fair-skinned, red-heads, blondes, straight haired, curly haired: everyone looks for something different to bring out their best. Happy new year! Today I want to talk about the only new year's resolution you need to make to get your parenting back on track.  It is one of my favourite practices and it is probably the most effective and most important parenting strategy that you can start using straight away.  January is a great time of year to reassess your parenting, to notice what needs to go and what you need to get back on track.  Over Christmas we often drop the normal routines and bad habits can creep in so it is almost a relief when January comes around and we can get back on track again.  But with that often comes self-judgement and self-criticism, especially when those good intentions don't get off the ground or get quickly forgotten about.  I'm here to show you a simple way to bring some self-love and kindness into your parenting - so you can be your own biggest cheerleader instead of your own worst enemy.  I explain why being kind to yourself can be a total game changer in your parenting and I take you through 4 quick and easy steps to calm the inner critic and replace it with self-kindness.  I also talk about the wider reasons that parenting is so hard and why we tend to blame ourselves for wider societal problems.  It is so good to be back talking to you - wishing you a very happy and peaceful new year.  If you are ready to put these ideas into practice in your own parenting, come and work with me over in the Peaceful Parent School.  Click here to find out more and book your place. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend and consider leaving an iTunes review. It will help this conversation reach even more parents.I would love to stay in touch! You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram @PamParentCoach. I always love to hear from my listeners.

If you'd like to check out more resources, learn about Mosaic Boston,or donate to this ministry, please visit mosaicboston.com Heavenly Father, we thank you for the blessing it is to gather as your people to hear from your Holy Spirit, from your holy scriptures. We thank you, Lord, that you did not leave us in the darkness of our ignorance. Often we have fled from you, from your presence, from your word, from community, and we've done it intentionally, and we've done it in order to further our ignorance. Instead of leading us groping in the darkness, Lord, you send us people, messengers, ambassadors, evangelists, missionaries, Christians, believers, those who spoke the truth with love in a way that compelled our hearts. Lord, if there is anyone who is not yet a believer, a follower of Christ, a child of God today, save them. Today, override their reluctant will, and, Lord, save them from their sins. And for those of us who are your children, Lord, remind us that you have commissioned each one of us to go and make disciples, people of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Bless our time in the holy scriptures today, continue to expand your holy church, Lord. Jesus, you promised that you will build your church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it, so continue to expand your kingdom, your church, and take territory from the enemy. I pray all this in Christ's holy name. Amen. We are beginning today a brand new sermon series through the Book of Jonah. We're really excited about it. It's four chapters, four weeks, and then we believe the Lord is leading us to do a deeper study of the life of Joseph, in Genesis 37 through 50. And then that'll take us through the end of the summer. The series title is Reluctant Believer. The title of the sermon is I Fear God, kind of, and that's who Jonah is. He's a rebel. He's not just reluctant or recalcitrant. He's often resentful of God in his ways. It's the only book about a prophet gone rogue. I had a brother approach me after the service and he said, "When I was younger, I scoffed at Jonah, and said, 'What a moron. Why would he run from God?'" And he said, "After 10 years in the faith, I can relate." And I think we all can relate. The other reason why we chose this book is because as we studied through the Book of Romans, we saw that the gospel, it's not just new news, like new news. No, the gospel was grounded in Old Testament, Hebrew scriptures. The Apostle Paul constantly quotes from the salter and the prophets to show us this was the plan from the very beginning. Romans 1:16, "For I'm not ashamed of the gospel, the good news for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." The gospel is for everyone. This isn't new. This was the plan from the very beginning, God's family has room for everyone. This is the message at the heart of the Book of Jonah that God's compassion extends to the most wicked, even to the Gentiles, even to us. That nothing can thwart God's purpose to save sinners. And that purpose is not limited to any one group. The Gentiles, or the nations, we're always in the heart of God. He longs for people of all nations to come and to pray to him. The Jewish people were blessed with possession of the scriptures. They were told by God to bring this message that every person can be reconciled with Yahweh, to bring this light to the Gentiles. But they failed miserably as missionaries to the nations, as we'll see with Jonah, mostly because they started taking God's grace for granted. "Well, of course God loves us. We are the chosen people, of course." And we as Christians, we have to fight that tendency as well. Paul and the other apostles had to be taught, this is surprising, that God had always included the Gentiles in the number of his elect children. And that for they not all Israel, who are of Israel, Paul writes. So Jonah was the first Jewish missionary to a Gentile nation. He's called one of the 12 minor prophets. Minor, not because lesser in importance, but because of what they wrote was just shorter. Jonah was only four chapters, compared to Isaiah 66, Jeremiah 52, Ezekiel 48 chapters. The book is all about God's love. It's not about Jonah, it's about God. It's about God's pursuit of rebels. It's about God helping us overcome our pride, showing us our sin, exposing our self-righteousness and leading us to repentance by giving us the gift of grace. And then we see that God is a missionary God. God longs to save people from all nations. And ultimately, this book is all about the gospel that God's love, the Lord, Yahweh is a God of boundless compassion, not just for us, Christians, or in the story Jonah, the Israelites, but also for them, the pagan sailors, the Ninevites. And we have to keep a guard of our own hearts and the culture of our church to make sure that we continue to be welcoming to absolutely anyone and everyone. It's not us and them. It's not, "We are Christians because we're better." No, no, we're Christians because God saved us. God superimposed his will upon our will. He regenerated us. And if there's hope for us, even us, there's hope for absolutely everyone. This is the message of the Book of Jonah. So today we're in Jonah 1:1-17. Would you look at the text with me? Now, the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of amortized saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me." But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going down to Tarshish. So he paid the fair, went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship and to the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone into the inner part of the ship and had laid down and was fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, "What do you mean, you sleeper. Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us that we may not perish." And they said to one another, "Come let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. They said to him, "Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country and of what people are you?" And he said to them, "I'm a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the city in the dry land." Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, "what is this that you have done!" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord because he had told them. And they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?" For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. He said to them, "Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you." Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Therefore, they called out to the Lord, "Oh Lord, let us not perish for this man's life and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, oh Lord, have done as it pleased you." So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. This is the reading of God's holy, inerrant, and infallible, authoritative word may write these eternal truths upon our hearts. Is it a fish or a whale? Let's start with a really important questions. According to our graphic, that looks like a whale, looks like a whale in the graphic. I don't know. The Hebrew says fish, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Billy Graham said, "If you believe that in the beginning God created the world," and he's like, "even if it said Jonah ate the fish, I'd still believe it." So that doesn't matter. What matters is that God is sovereign. There are many lessons to learn from this text. Three points to frame up our time. First, the compassionate commandment of God. Second, the stiff-necked rebellion of a religious man, and the relentless pursuit by the hound of heaven. First, the compassionate commandment of God. God comes to Jonah and says verse one, now the Lord, the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me." Well, first of all, you got to pause and say what an honor. What a great honor that God's word would come to you, and that God would so be gracious to you to give you a job, to give you a calling. A prophet being called by God to journey to Nineveh to deliver this message. This is an extraordinary phenomenon. Prophetic Oracles against nations were commonplace, but they were spoken in the prophets native land for his fellow nationals. So if we follow the pattern of the other prophets, it would be word of Lord comes to Jonah. Jonah get up in front of the Israelites, and say, "The people in Nineveh, they're terrible." And obviously, everyone in Israel is like, "Yeah, we agree." That's not the mission. Here he is given the mission and he's selected for a role to bring a word of judgment upon the people, kind of like the angels were sent as agents of divine destruction against Sodom in Genesis 19. Jonah, what do we know about him? He was a contemporary of Elijah, most likely he was one of the sons of the prophets of Elijah referring to Elijah's school. Elijah was a man and Saint john tells us that, "Elijah was a man." Elijah, one of the greatest prophets. And in the same way that Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, we can pause here and say, you know what? Before we start knocking Jonah, "You should have known better as a great man of God." He's still a dude. He's still a guy. The fact that these prophets were given a divine commission and divine inspiration did not make them not human. They still had a temper and they still had their own character and their own flaws, and the prophetic call was something apart from and altogether independent of their intellect or even their will. So what do we know about Jonah as the man? Well, the Hebrew name for Jonah means dove, which is nice. And if you go the allegorical route, you can infuse lots of meaning here, dove and the New Testament is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Jonah, like the Holy Spirit brings revival to Nineveh. But what's fascinating is that Jonah is more like a hawk than a dove. He's not a dove at all. He's not happy about this mission. He's not happy about being a man of God. He's not happy about having to preach the gospel. He's not happy about people getting converted. But God can use the personality of even a stubborn person or a strong-willed person, like Jonah or Peter or Sampson or Paul. But first, God needs to break a man before he uses a man. He has to teach him, or a woman, obedience before they're used in service. The other thing I want to point out here is that God has been incredibly compassionate to Jonah. Jonah grew up in a believing family. His father was a believer, follower of the Lord, and Jonah has given the task of being a prophet, and he's given grace to live in a time where the people of God deserved judgment. 2 Kings 14:25 sets Jonah in the reign of eighth century BC King Jeroboam II. Well, Jeroboam II, he was a sinner. He did not do what God wanted him to do, and yet God, because of his grace on these people, on Jonah, he allowed the kingdom to expand. So 2 Kings 14:25 about Jeroboam II, he restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he had spoke by his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher. So Jonah had experienced God's grace firsthand. He saw that God can restore even a kingdom for his people, because of God's great compassion. His compassion overrides the waywardness of the people. So Jonah has been given grace, and it's expected that Jonah who has received grace is going to now share that grace with the people of Nineveh. He did not want to do that. Why? Because Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire, the sworn enemies of Israel. Nineveh was found in east of, today, Syria, northern part of Iraq. It's on the east side of the Tigress River. Even today, Jonah's association with that place is well known. There's a Muslim shrine there to the prophet Yunus or Jonah. And this is the last capital of the Assyrian Empire. From excavations, we know it was a grand city, had famous hanging gardens, dams, parks, a 50-mile aqueduct, great roads, a double wall protecting the city. The wall was world renowned, greater than Babylon. The wall was a 100 feet high, so broad that three wagons might be driven on it at the same time. The walls were fortified with 1500 towers at proper distances. Each rising 200 feet in height, rendering the city seemingly impregnable. No one can touch us, we're fortified. The city was also wealthy. It was the center of commerce between the East and the West. And the wickedness of Nineveh kept pace with its commercial importance and external greatness. Why Nineveh? Why Nineveh? Well, God chose Nineveh, but also we see that God often uses this same method to reach a people. This is the same way the St. Paul reached the Roman Empire. He picked city centers, urban city centers, places of influence, places where ideologies were formed and from which they were shipped. And this is where he wanted to plant the gospel. So you see the New Testament, you see all the epistles and the epistles are usually written to city centers, churches in city center, the epistles to the Romans, you got Rome, Ephesus, Thessalonica, et cetera. So in a way, this city, Nineveh, was a city set on a hill, unrivaled in splendor, but also an influence. Something that happened here would be heard about everywhere. So if the gospel, if the message of mercy, that God is a loving God, a merciful God, that our evil has come up before Him, but if we repent, He will relent of sending the wrath that we deserve. God is saying, "Jonah, go plant the gospel in the heart of your enemy's greatest city." That's what He's doing. Obviously, the parallels to what we're doing here in Boston are very clear. The reason why we came here, the reason why we're working so hard to establish this church in this city, is because Boston, pound for pound, is the most influential city in the world. Historically speaking, between the last three, four, five decades, look at the influence of this city upon the world. This is an ideology center of the world. People come here, their minds are filled with ideology, and the export the ideologies elsewhere. What is God telling us? He's saying, plant the gospel where you are. Plant the gospel in the heart of your enemy's greatest city. Plant the gospel in the heart of your enemies. This is how the Lord operates. And what's the job that Jonah is given? He says, "Call out against the city, for their evil has come up before me." None of us described as a great city, great in population, great in resources, great in the enormity of its crimes. Later on in chapter four at the end it says that there are 120,000 people that know neither left or from their right. Most likely it's talking about children. So if you say that children are one fifth of a population, you're talking about maybe 600,000 people in population, maybe upwards of a million. Incredibly, incredibly powerful, but also sinful. People who are committing acts of evil against God, heaven daring iniquities. And we're reminded from the very beginning that that God is holy. And before Jonah brings a message of forgiveness, which he didn't want to bring, he does bring a message of judgment. That evil, our evil, the Ninevites personal evil, their evil has come up before the Lord. We're reminded that God is holy. There are things that you and I get used to, but God as our holy creator never will never get used to, He's revolted by. Idolatry and lying and cheating and stealing and hatred, adultery, murder things we get accustomed to. Things we write off as weakness, God deems wickedness. He does use the word evil. So point number one, well, I said that God is given a message of compassion to Jonah. Well, where's the compassion in going to a people and calling out their evils? Where's the compassion there? Well, friend, that's the most compassionate thing you can do. The absolute most... If we believe that God is truly holy, and if we believe that one transgression against his commandment is enough to render us guilty for eternity, and unless we repent of our sin and turn to Christ, we will spend eternity in hell, and internal damnation. If you really believe that, the absolute most compassionate thing that I can do is to tell you the truth that God can do. This is the most compassionate thing. That there is evil that you have committed that has come up before the Lord. We need to know this and we need to respond to this mission. Realize the gravitas of the situation that we stand condemned before a holy God. So what does God do in his love? He sends a messenger who will bring this message. And this is a good reminder that our salvation does not begin with ourselves. How did you come to faith? And by the way, this is a great practice in your community group. Maybe this week share a little bit, maybe one to two people about how you came to faith. And specifically about whom did God send into your life to nudge you over? Whom did God send to nudge you over? He sends a lot of people to prepare us, and I was kind of like this. I grew up in a Christian family. I went to Christian camp. My dad would be like, "Yeah, believe in Jesus." And I was like, "Yeah, but you're my dad." And then one time I went to this, randomly, this conference, I heard this guy speak. He was a Slavic immigrant that grew up here, was educated here, spoke Russian fluently, spoke English fluently. What's dead serious about God, did not take himself seriously at all. So he cracked jokes, and I was nine and I liked that. And he just explained the gospel. He was like, "Yeah, you're a sinner, you're going to hell." I was like, "Yeah, that's true." And he's like, "Just trust in Jesus." And I was like, "That's all he takes." He's like, "Yeah." And I was like, "All right," so I repented my sins. I trusted in Jesus. He didn't say anything that was new or novel or different, but for some reason the Holy Spirit took his words and just nudged me over the edge. So God, this is how He operates. Did God bring someone to preach the gospel to you, to explain the gospel to you? Praise God for those people, but also understand that it wasn't them. Before they came and they spoke this message to you, God moved their hearts. God filled their hearts with compassion, and God moved their will to speak to you. So friends, also a reminder that you perhaps are that person for someone. You are that person for someone. There are people in your life perhaps that are ready. You just need to nudge them over the edge. Continue speaking the truth. Continue speaking it in love. Point number two is a stiff-necked rebellion of a religious person. Tarshish got all my S's messed up. Jonah 1:3, but Jonah rose to fleet to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fair and went down into it, to go with them at Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. What's fascinating, first of all, whenever God tells you something or tells someone something, if the next word is, "But Jonah," the story isn't going well. This is only verse number three. Come on, we're just getting started, so that's... The other thing, I call the guy stiff-necked because Tarshish is literally the opposite direction of Nineveh. He literally went to the ship station and he is like, "Where is diametrically opposed to this place? I want to go there." And that's why I call him stiff-necked. Stiff-necked is you know exactly what God's will is, but you're doing the opposite. I use that phrase because in the Old Testament, that's how God describes the people of Israel, stiff-necked. Over Christmas break, I went shark hunting. It's just a cool way of saying I went fishing for sharks, but I went shark hunting and I caught a bunch of sharks. They were epic. They were massive. They were so big, they almost ate me. No, they were tiny. They were so small. And so you reel it up, and then like you got to grab this thing by the neck to take the hook out. My goodness, I've never felt a more powerful neck on a tiny little creature, and I've got children, so that's why that's a big deal. He's stiff, "No, I'm not going. I'm going the opposite direction." Literally, he goes, trying to get away from God away from the presence of the Lord. You see this phrase over and over, away from the presence of the Lord. It sounds ludicrous. You can't get away from the presence of the Lord. So what is happening in your mind, Jonah? Well, first of all, you've got to ask and say, who's running? Well, this is a prophet. This is a religious man. This is a man of God, but for some reason, something happened where there is just a major gap between his relationship with God and his religion. In some ways, his religion became more important than his relationship with God and his word. It was his religion that prevented him from obeying God, because his religion taught him, he thought, and that was actually a man-made interpretation. No, no, no, no, no, love your enemy? No, no, no, you got to hate your enemy. Hate your enemy. Despise your enemy. That's your sworn enemy. That's who the Assyrians were. That's who Ninevites were. If your religion friend prevents you from loving your enemy, then you are not a child of God, because God loved us when we were yet enemies. God loves His enemies. He loved His enemies so much that he gave his son up for us. Lesson, you can be religious and sitting at the same time, and Jonah was running away from the revelation of God. He believed that God only spoke to his prophets in Israel. He thought, "If I get out of Israel, I get out of the confines of God's presence." But what we see here more than anything else is that Jonah gives us a definition of sin. Sin isn't just transgressing a commandment, it's transgressing the will of God. There are sins of co-mission, when we break a commandment we have committed a sin. But there are also sins of omission, where if you know the good that you ought to do, the good that God has called you to do, and you do not do it, you've disobeyed God in the same way as if someone transgressed the law. So what is sin? It's disobeying the will of God. And if that's the definition of sin, my goodness, everyone's guilty, and that's the point from the very beginning. The wicked Ninevites are as guilty as Jonah, the prophet. The pagan sailors, who at the end of this chapter bring sacrifice to the Lord, they are in trepidation, trembling, fear of God. They're making vows worshiping God, because they understood that they also were sinners. A definitive word comes from God. When Jonah chooses to disobey, he chooses to base his understanding of reality on religion, on nationalism, ethnicity, tradition, et cetera. So he runs from God. He isn't running from the spacial presence of God as much as he's running from the relational presence of God. Do you know that feeling, when you know you're in sin? We know it. It's like the Bible becomes kryptonite. It's just like a magnet, it's pushed away from you, the Bible is. Christians, no, all of their phone numbers blocked. Blocked, you're not reaching. First thing you do, you drop out of community or drop out of church, you drop out of... What are you doing? You know that when you're with the people of God, you feel the presence of God. You know when you're a holy scripture, you feel the presence of God. So when you know when you're in sin, you're stiff-necked and you're like, "I want to get away from the presence of God," because at that moment, the presence of God is not comfortable. The presence of God is convicting. It's a fool's errand to run from the spirit of God. He's everywhere. Psalm 139:7-12, where shall I go from your spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol,, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. It was not that God was not everywhere present, but that there were consecrated places that represented the presence of God, and he wanted to get away. Obviously, it was silly, but we've all been in situations like this. Where you know the Lord has brought you in a situation, perhaps a relationship, and he's like, "So you got to stay here," or in a church community, sins been exposed, "stay here, work through it." Sometimes we run like Jonah. Perhaps God has a particular call on your life. Are you fleeing it? Tarshish was a city on the coast of Spain. So they're headed there. And we see in the language, it just describes this dissension that's happening with Jonah. He arose to flee. He goes down to Joppa. He found a ship, pays the fair, went down into it, down, down, down. Trying to flee from the presence of Lord always brings you down. Why did Jonah run? Well, he tells us in chapter four, the thought is he's afraid. Assyrians, they're going to kill him. That's what he's afraid of. Well, I don't think that's the theory because for a number of reasons. First of all, the guy's suicidal. Four times he's like, "Just kill me. Just kill me. I don't want to do anything. I don't want to be here. Lord, just kill me." And God's like, "Nope. Nope. Nope." He also does tell us, he's like, "Lord, I knew what would happen if I preached to the Ninevites." This is Jonah 4:1-4, but it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. He preaches to the gospel one time. He goes through a stroll. He is like, "You're all going to die. You're all going to die." That's like the dream sermon, man. I would love to do that. Just walk the streets to Boston, "Everyone's going to die!" But the thing is, I got to keep living here. Jonah gets to leave. So he preached the gospel. Everyone gets saved, and he's bummed about it. He's so mad. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. And he prayed to the Lord and said, "Oh, Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding and steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Therefore, now, oh, Lord, please take my life from me, for it's better for me to die than to live." And the Lord said, "Do you do well to do anger?" He was afraid not that the Ninevites would not repent, no, he was afraid that they would repent. That's how much he hated them. He's like, "God, I would rather die than spend eternity with these losers." That's the sentiment in his heart. So God sends Jonah to preach to the Gentiles, even though Jonah despises them. This would be like Yahweh sending a patriotic South Korean evangelist into North Korea to preach to Kim Jong Un, same situation. And so Jonah is representative of his people, as the elder brother in Luke 15 is representative of the Pharisees. It's like Jesus spending time with tax collectors and sinners. Similar to the parable of the unforgiving servant who's forgiven a huge sum only to deny forgiveness to a colleague over trifling debt. Jonah too is a sinner saved by divine grace who wants to do everything possible to not allow pagan sinners to be the same recipients of the same grace. We're all like Jonah in many ways desiring justice for others, but grace for ourselves. "Yeah, I don't deserve it, but that person deserves it even less than I do." This is the sinful, self-righteousness in Jonah. So what happens? Well, point three, the relentless pursuit by the hound of heaven. And I get this phrase from CS Lewis who talks about God like that. He said the night of his conversion, he was in his dorm room on his knees. He felt the presence of God really heavy in the room, didn't want to repent. He's like, "I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it." And then finally submits to the Lord. And he said, "That night I was the most reluctant and despondent convert in all of England." Like, "Yeah, I'll believe in you, but I'm not happy about it." That's the same situation with Jonah. Verse four, but the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so the ship threatened to break up. Who sends the storm? God sends a storm. God sends a storm because Jonah needed a storm. And God at times uses pain to get our attention. It's a means of grace. In storms, the real you comes out. Storms reveal who you are and your need for God. That we are contingent, we are dependent. As Lewis writes, "Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasure, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world." This is the function of pain on the lowest level. It's to shattered the illusion that all is okay and to plant the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel's soul. On a higher level, pain shatters another illusion that we are self-sufficient. We are not. Verse five says, the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the seat to lighten it for them. And Jonah had gone into the inner part of the ship and had laid down and was fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, "What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish." So you see the sailors using emergency measures, jettisoning cargo. This is the last grasp at life. And the captain comes in and says, "What do you mean? What do you mean?" I like the King James version, "What meanest thou?" Where it was like, he just doesn't have any. Like, "What are you doing? We're all in the brink of death and you're sleeping here." And Jonah's like, "Yes, that's the point. I'm trying to die." And in storms, we see that people do get religious. All the sailors, they're pagans, and they're like, "We're praying to our god. Do you have a god? Our gods aren't working. Do you have one? Try your god out." And of all the men in the ship, Jonah was the person that should have been awake more than anyone else. Nevertheless, he was asleep, fast asleep. The creaking of the cordage, the dashing of the waves, the howling of the winds, the straining of the timbers, the shouting of the sailors nothing can arouse this guy. He's fastened in the arms of sleep. The Hebrew word here is radam, which means the deepest sleep. The word is used to describe the sleep that God puts on Adam when he takes the rib from him, like anesthesia, deep sleep. Many a preacher commentator said that, "Jonah hears asleep because his conscience is asleep." The great pastor Charles Spurgeon has a great sermon on this. If your conscience is asleep, you should read that sermon. But I don't think that's what's going on here. I don't think he's asleep because of a seared conscience. Later on, because I see that he's very quick to repent. No, I think there's something else going on here. I think this is an anguish of the soul. The Holy Spirit has been convicting him and he's been trying to fall asleep. Just before his crucifixion, Jesus prayed in Gethsemane. And as he prayed, he sweat great drops of blood, and then Jesus found his disciples asleep. Why were they asleep? Luke 22:45 tells us, and when he rose up from prayer and had come to his disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow. Sometimes the response to grief is sleep. I will tell you that rebelling against God is exhausting, and it's exhausting at the soul level. Jonah's retreating from God, from the presence of God. Perhaps God had removed His gracious presence and replaced it with His disciplinary presence. We're not sure. A Jonah 1:7 says, they said to one another, "Come let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. When the trial by lot was resorted to figure out what was going on. I think at that moment the lot falls on Jonah, Jonah felt the arrest of God's hand upon him. It said, "Jonah, you're exposed, sovereignly exposed, what do you do now?" Verse eight, then they said to him, "Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?" And he said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea in the dry land." Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, "What is this that you have done!" For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. Jonah, maybe he doesn't understand, maybe it's cognitive dissonance or something, but even the sailors get it. "You just said you fear the Lord and then you told us that you're running from the presence of God. We're all about to die and you keep telling us that you're a great follower of the Lord." No, no. They're rebuking him. The pagan sailors are rebuking a man of God. God rebukes him, the storm rebuked him, and the pagan sailors rebuked him, because this is not fear of God. Fear of God is to hate evil. Well, it's evil to disobey God. So no, you do not fear God in the moment that you disobey him. You fear something greater. You can't but admire the frankness of Jonas confession of guilt, and he's willing to surrender to the claims of justice as we're about to see, when he could have denied the whole thing. At this moment, the captain comes to him and says, "Wake up owe you sleeper, what meanest thou?" And Jonah wakes up and says, "I meanest nothing. Leave me alone. I'm ready to die." "Is this your fault?" "Nope, not my fault. Not my fault." "Who do you believe?" "Don't worry about it. I'm going back to sleep." He doesn't do any of that, so that's why I don't take the interpret interpretation that he was asleep because of seared conscience, because as soon as providence forces him to deal with this issue, we hear of no shuffling excuses, no dishonest evasions, no blame shifting, but only the unreserved utterance of a heart already conscious of guilt. He's ready to take on the judgment that he knows he deserves. Verse 11, then they said to him, "What shall we do to you, that the sea might may quiet down for us?" For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. He said to them, "Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great temp has come upon you." Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. These men are over overawed by the manifestation of divine justice that they're seeing right in front of their eyes. Some preachers would get up and like, "Hey, you should believe in Jesus. Here's my testimony. Everything was terrible. I believe in Jesus, and everything was awesome." Jonas, the anti-testimony, he gets up and he is like, "Look, if you disobey God, this is what's going to happen to you." So they're absolutely freaking out and they think that they see God's vengeance upon this person, and they're like, "This same God sent the storm," so they are absolutely humbled by God. They're doing everything possible to protect themselves from God's judgment. That's why they're rowing so hard. And finally, verse 14, they called out to Lord, "Oh, Lord..." Oh, Lord, that sounds like believers. They believer. "Oh, Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, oh, Lord, have done as it pleased you." Oh yeah, they believe in the sovereignty of God. So they picked up, Jonah hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. And then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Jonah feared God, kind of, because of his example. We see these men that fear God and they fear him exceedingly. The fish, this was miraculous, but it just shows the sovereignty of God. Here, I want you to meditate with me real quick on both severity and the mercy of God toward Jonah. Did you notice it's not enough for Jonah that he confessed his transgression and condemned himself on account of it? Why doesn't the storm stop at that moment? Jonah gets on his knees and says, "Yahweh, I repent of my sin. I'm so sorry. Forgive me." The storm should have ended. That should have been the end. He should be like... they all get saved. And then he's like, "Church isn't a cruise ship, it's a battleship. Let's go, gentlemen. We're go to Nineveh." Rallies up the troops and goes take Nineveh. That's not what happens at all. There wasn't enough. Why doesn't God stop the storm immediately after the confession? Why? Because justice demands more. Why such painful severity here? Because the ends of the divine government required it. First, in the instance of Jo Jonah himself, he had sinned presumptuous against God. He must bear the penalty. It was a righteous thing for God to do and inflict such judgment. Hebrews 12, dear Christian, a lot of Christians live and they operate with theology that's completely removed to Hebrews 12. And in Christ, there's no condemnation for my sins, but if I sin against God and I do it willfully, like Jonah does, Hebrews 12 kicks in friends. Hebrews 12, go back and read Hebrews 12:5-12. It says, if God loves a son or daughter, and the son or daughter are walking wayward, disobeying, what does... God does discipline those whom he loves. Still more was, which this is an example of severity needed for the good of others. The honor and the cause of God were at this time particularly bound up with the faithfulness of Jonah and having failed in the way of duty to promote the glory of God, he must in another way, become an instrument in advancing the glory of God. He should have glorified God by preaching to the Ninevites. And God would've blessed them and God would've been glorified. Instead, God will be glorified through this man, even though the man doesn't want to be glorified as an anti example, don't be like this guy. Thus, we learn from his experience that a near relationship to God purchases no immunity from sin or from discipline, and that's Hebrews 12:5-11. 2 Timothy 2-20-22 talks about this. Do you want to be a vessel of honorable use in the house of God or dishonorable use? I would recommend you read that. What befell Jonah was severity, but also the mercy of God. No sooner is he cast out, as a victim of divine justice into the raging deep, a great fish was ready to swallow him. Not for instant destruction, but for safe preservation. Jonah is spared final death with a temporary death. People wonder how in the world did he live 72 hours in the belly of a fish simmering in gastric juices? I just like saying that phrase. That's a juicy phrase. You can practice it, gastric juices. I think he died. I don't know. I would've died. I don't know. Whatever happened, he was entombed. Did God keep him alive? Did God resuscitate him? Did God resurrect him? That doesn't matter. What doesn't matter is he's taken to darkness to finally be brought to light, and God often does that. 2 Corinthians 4:6, for God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shown in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Fast-forward about 750 years from the storm, from Jonah's entombment in the belly of the fish, comes Jesus Christ, the greater Jonah. Jesus began his messianic mission by preaching the gospel to crowds in the Galilee region, which was at the heart of the northern kingdom one time, before being captured by Syria. As the crowds grew, Jesus' popularity grows. His opposition from the religious leaders, Pharisees, also grew. So Jesus is doing miracles, and yet they won't submit to him. They finally come to him and they say, "Give us proof that you are the Messiah." Matthew 12:38-42. Mind you, this is after Jesus had healed a man with a withered hand, healed two blind men, restored the life of a young girl along with countless other miracles. Matthew 12:38-42, then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him saying, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here." Knowing that they were trying to trick him, Jesus says, "The only sign that you're going to get is the gospel, the sign of the prophet Jonah. What is it? It's death, it's burial and it's resurrection." And Jesus says, "What happened with Jonah was just a sign pointing to Jesus Christ." Jesus speaks of this forthcoming sign, His death, His resurrection as the sign of Jonah, those Ninevites who believe Jonah's preaching will be called by Yahweh as witnesses on judgment. They will testify that they believe in Jonah's preaching on far less evidence than Jesus has given the scribes and the Pharisees, because it's never a question of evidence. It's never a question of evidence. It's always a question of will. If the gospel of Jesus Christ, if you seeing what God did there and the gospel of Jesus Christ, where God should have just killed all of us, a storm on all of us, we're all just dead, spend eternity in hell. No, no, no. Jesus Christ, willingly, Himself, God comes incarnate, lives a perfect life, perfectly, in this broken world, surrounded by evil people, surrounded by sinful people. This same God goes to the cross to die for our sins. What is Jesus doing there? He's bearing the wrath of God that we deserve for our evil. The same condemnation that the Ninevites deserve, that Jonah deserves, and that the sailors deserve, we deserve. And Jesus goes, and on the crust, he's bearing the wrath of God for our sins. He's taken the storm of the wrath of God, the raging of the wrath of God that we deserve for choosing our own will. For every single moment in life, when we said, "No, no, no, God, not your will, my will be done." For every single one of those moments, Jesus Christ comes and he says, "No, no, no. For that moment, I paid. I paid by saying, "Not my will, Father, but yours be done." Jesus Christ, the perfect servant of God, submits himself not just as a testimony to us and an example to us. That's all good and well, but he does that to save us from our sins. He wasn't forced to do it, he did it willingly. Out of love for us here. Here just a message for believers and unbelievers alike. I've met many of people who like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll come to God on my time. All right, I'll, I'm going to go to Tarshish for a bit. I'm going to take a ship. I'm going to get on a boat, and I'll come back. I'll do my job." Let me just tell you something. After studying Romans and studying Jonah, do I believe in free will? The closest we get to free will in the book of Jonah is the fish, Free Willy. There is no free will. There's zero free will in this book. Jonah does not want to preach. "Jonah, you're going to preach." "I'm not going to." "You're going to preach." "God, I want to die." "You're not going to die yet. You're not going to die. You're not going to die." "God, I don't want them to get saved." "They're going to get saved." This guy is stubborn and he was forced by God into submission to bow. His lips were compelled to utter words, which of himself he would've never done. It was all the Lord's doing. God will accomplish His will in your life. The only question is, will you come willingly and joyfully? Which you should, come on. Or reluctantly and begrudgingly? Christ's death and resurrection is the foundation for the gospel, which is to be preached to the ends of the earth and is the sign of Jonah, which lives on. And the commission that God gave each one of us go and make disciples of all nations. So friend, if you are not yet a Christian, a child of God, if you're not sure, just know your evil has come up before the Lord, and if your evil is not dealt with on the cross of Jesus Christ, it will be dealt on you for eternity. So we plead with you, receive God's grace, repent, and believe in Jesus Christ. And for those of you who are Christians, let us not forget our marching orders. We are to follow Christ in making disciples. Amen. Let's pray. Heavenly, Father, we thank you for this wonderful text. We thank you for this wonderful book. We pray that you continue to make us a people full of your compassion, the same compassion you feel for others. Let us feel it as well. In particular, in sharing the gospel, helping people meet you and be ushered in to the kingdom of God. We pray all this in Christ's name. Amen.

2022 Professional Fighters League lightweight runner-up Steven Ray believes he is not alone in regarding the weigh-in scale as perhaps his most daunting opponent. Things didn't go according to plans for Ray (25-11, 2-2 PFL) last year, who fell short of capturing the $1 million prize and the PFL Championship after losing to Olivier Aubin-Mercier in November. Still, “Braveheart” scored back-to-back victories over former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Anthony Pettis by making his foe tap to a twister before outpointing “Showtime” on all scorecards. Ahead of his first 2023 PFL Regular Season assignment, Ray confessed that being on a constant diet is one of the biggest challenges, especially for someone like him who loves food. The Scotsman has never missed weight in his career, but admits he strayed far above the lightweight limit during the offseason. “You have good days and bad days, but yeah, it is tough. I'm not the smallest guy for 155. Over Christmas, I went to like 200 pounds, just eating good. I didn't go crazy, but I did eat. It's this unhealthy relationship we fighters have with it. I've done it in the past as well [...] when you have to diet so extreme for so many weeks, and then you get to eat what you want, you want to go crazy. Paddy Pimblett goes huge as well, especially when you're a person that loves food. I love pizza, I love burgers, I love chocolate and ice cream and all that, that I'm not allowed, that I've not had any this year. It's hard not to go crazy when we're allowed to. I got heavy over Christmas and obviously suffered for it this fight camp.”(00:00) Intro (00:51) Losing to Aubin-Mercier(03:26) Being on good terms with Aubin-Mercier (03:51) Postponing his plans to upgrade his gym (04:34) His motivation for the 2023 Season (05:36) The stress of being constantly in camp (06:58) Whether he considered moving up a division (08:21) Being constantly in a calorie deficit (10:29) Preparing for Schulte (11:20) Commenting on Schulte's fighting style (12:51) What he expects from Schulte (14:46) Outro

A little while ago, my doctor told me that I need to convalesce. My instinct? To record a podcast episode about convalescence. In which I was called out (kindly) for that being my first instinct. The episode is, I think, a fascinating conversation about what realistic convalescence in 2023 looks like when you live with a long-term health condition and can't just disappear to “go and take the sea air”.After a difficult few months, exacerbated in the last few weeks, I was putting the finishing touches to my script for the first episode of The Rest Room for 2023 (all about Post-Exertional Malaise), when I realised that I just need to take a break. My capacity for work, or even basic tasks of daily living, and the impact they have on my ability to function has changed. So, after stubbornly clinging to some of my own projects for my own sense of wellbeing, it finally hit me that I need to respect my need to stop, rest, and recover. It feels appropriate, then, that this episode is about convalescence. It's a topic that good friend of the podcast, Jo Southall, and I arranged to talk about long before I decided to take a break. And I'm so glad that we did.In it, we discuss:* How we contextualise “health” in a modern world * How to start incorporating convalescence into everyday life * Exploring presenteeism, plateaus, and the stress bucket* Learning to give yourself permission to rest* Shifting your mindset when it comes to rest and recovery * How to convalesce at home* Whether technology has affected our ability to convalesce……and much more.--A huge thank you to TGA Mobility for sponsoring this episode. They believe that when it's hard to move, you needn't stop living.Over Christmas, I had the opportunity to borrow and test out their new, foldable Whill F powerchair on my trip to Germany, and it helped me travel comfortably and independently. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed, it was incredibly comfortable and so easy to use, fold, and transport.I know that buying a wheelchair is a big decision, but for if and when the time is right, TGA are offering 10% off new scooters and powerchairs for Rest Room listeners with code RESTROOM10.Find me on Substack at natashalipman.substack.com. Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. And wish you all the best for the new year! Let's get started with a 'knock-knock' joke: Knock-knock Who's there? Razor Razor who? Raise your glass to the new year! Woo hoo! Over Christmas break, we spent 6 days in an all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico. Honestly, the beach next to the resort was meh – but the resort itself was really good. Lots of food, many pools and unlimited drinks. I mean, come on! We also met my uncle - my dad's brother - and his family. We saw them after almost 5 years so it was fun to catch up and just hang out. The resort had many different options for food - from a buffet to a cafe bar and many restaurants. For dinner we went to a few restaurants in the resort. We had a variety of cuisines to choose from – Yucatan (the local area), Italian, Japanese etc. And they were all good. Interestingly, we didn't eat a lot of Mexican food :) We went to visit the Chichen Itza – an ancient Mayan city about 3 hours by road from Cancun. The complex had a sports arena where the ancients played challenging sports. And can you believe that the winner was sacrificed? That just sounds like a good reason not to be good at something. On the way back, we stopped by a cenote. A cenote is a natural sink-hole – a natural pool. It was beautiful! We also spent a couple of hours in a town called Villadolid. The town was very lively and we got to see some traditional dances there. One of the dances was impressive where the dancers put a glass bottle on their forehead during the dance. That was a long day but it was a lot of fun to visit one of the 7 wonders and learn about Mayan history. We also did yoga on the beach and biked around the resort. On the last day, we went on another excursion. To be honest, I was a little nervous about this but I am really glad I did it. We swam in a cenote – actually in an underground cave. That was a first for me! It was so pretty! We got to float through a cave where the water was more than 150 ft deep! And then it got even more fun – we went snorkeling! I got to see some cool fish up close, really close. I had a great time doing things I hadn't done before. Cancun is a fun place – with a lot of options. Of course, you can spend the entire day at the resort but there's a lot of things to do outside. What has branches but no fruits, trunk or leaves? Answer: The government – because it has 3 branches – executive, legislative and judicial. Here's some more jokes! Where can you find comedians on NYE? Waiting on the punch line! An iPhone and a firework were arrested on NYE. One was charged and the other was left off. As always, email me: RiyaRamblings@gmail.com with your questions, comments and feedback. What did you do on your Christmas break? And have you been to Cancun? What was the best part?

Your Model vs Your Teen's ModelThe Self-Coaching Model is at play in your life, your teen's life, and everyone's life. Your model can even have the same circumstance as your teen's model. In fact, I've seen teens simply adopt their parent's models, and have identical models. So here's the most important thing to understand when it comes to the difference between your model and your teen's model. You can only control your own model. You CAN NOT control your teen's model. You are not responsible for how your teen thinks, feels, behaves, or the results that they create in their life. You are only responsible for your own model. So, stop trying to manage your teen's model and let them do that for themselves. "I don't want to disappoint my parents."Recently I spoke to a high school swim team. One of the things the girls told me was, "I'm constantly anxious because I don't want to disappoint my parents."Can you see how these teens were focused on someone else's model?Of course they're feeling anxious. They are focused on something outside of their control. Over Christmas, one of the things that I heard mothers tell me in their coaching sessions was, "I don't want my kids to be disappointed with Christmas."Again, they're feeling anxious because they are focused on something outside of their control., their teen's model. The problem is that our teens are learning to try to manage others' models for them because they see us doing that as parents when we try to manage their models. Let's stop that!Trust Your TeenYour teen is more than capable of managing their own model. You might ask, "what if they won't manage it?"That's okay. They are perfectly capable of owning their model. They are perfectly capable of owning the consequences of ignoring their model too. Show your teen that you trust them. Show them that they have the power to manage how they think and feel. Show them that you trust them and give them the autonomy to manage their model for themselves. Manage Your Own ModelYou can't manage your teen's model for them, but you can be a powerful example to them of managing your own model. In fact, in my experience, when parents manage their own models, things change in their homes. Often, simply managing your own model is enough to help your teen start managing their own. Human beings are herd animals, including your teen. If you lead by example, they are likely to follow. Create the Tradition of Parenting Growth in 2023!Join me in becoming the parent of your dreams. I'm re-launching the Firmly Founded Parent, and it's AMAZING!This is a gift that will impact not only you, but your whole entire family as well.As you grow and develop your parenting skills, things will change in your whole home.Make this year magical, by BEING the parent of your dreams.Check out the NEW and IMPROVED Firmly Founded Parent Community. If you want access to my new course, Parenting with Peace and Simplicity, now's the time. If you're ready to stop waiting for your teen to change, get access to 1:1 coaching with me in the membership so YOU can start to be the change. Connect with other parents who are also working to Be the change in their family. Start BEING the parent of your dreams!JOIN Firmly Founded Parent (FFP) in 2023

How a 19-year-old college student defeated anorexia with the help of her family, doctors — and a renewed relationship with God. (0:07) The narrator introduces Maureen Cole, a spirited 19-year-old student at Hope College and an avid dancer. Usually sunny, Maureen's positivity disappeared as she fell into habits that led to an eating disorder, at first unbeknownst to her parents. Marlise Cole, Maureen's mom, explains what she witnessed. (3:00) Maureen Cole describes the conditions that led to her anorexia, starting with the pandemic in 2020. A straight-A student, Maureen describes her reticence to switch to remote learning and dance via Zoom. As the pandemic wore on, she transformed her basement into a full home dance studio, and exercise slowly became an obsession. (7:00) Over Christmas break her senior year of high school, Maureen had a routine physical with her doctor, who told her she had lost 10 pounds. Others seemed to notice she looked fitter, and she liked the attention. (8:23) Slowly, her eating habits changed. She cut sweets and carbs, and began to become obsessed with her diet. She cut condiments, then red meat, then dairy. Eventually — and to Maureen's credit — she realized she might have an eating disorder, but didn't want to tell anyone. Her personality faded, and eventually, others began to take notice. (11:03) Maureen's dance teacher called her parents, who began to panic at the realization of what their daughter was facing. Maureen's body began to show frightening signs of an eating disorder. She started to work with a dietician and physician. (13:40) During fall break her first semester in college, Maureen visited the doctor for a check-up, but she hadn't gained any weight. Her heart rate was frighteningly low, and she realized — finally — that if nothing changed, she was slowly dying. (14:14) Realizing the gravity of the situation, Maureen finally committed to battling her anorexia. Her parents pulled her from dance, and found her a doctor specializing in eating disorders. She began a University of Michigan-sponsored program, Maudsley, to fight her disease. (16:38) Maureen describes the role of faith in her recovery. The realization that God was calling her to great things — not an eating disorder — was crucial, she says. Slowly, she began to see progress. (18:21) As things improved, Maureen's relationship with God did also. Her personality began to return, and she started to develop healthier relationships with food. (20:04) Today, Maureen continues her recovery, but she's back in school at Hope and dancing again. Maureen's mom, Marlise, describes Maureen's newly rediscovered relationship with God. Maureen describes the courage her journey took, and how she continues to battle — all with God's help. Join our World of Procurement Discord Community here. Take our Contract Management for Beginners Course here. Check out our article on Contract Management Trends 2022 here. Over Christmas, I started thinking about the top Contract Management trends for 2022. Essentially, I believe that we will build on the trends that emerged in 2021 as we navigated our way through a new way of living, travelling and existing. One general observation I have of us Contract Managers is that there is a fantastic opportunity to become more closely aligned with our Legal colleagues. There is talk of a rise in Legal Operations and Legal Design type roles throughout 2022. If you look at what the generic job description of these Legal type roles are (and these aren't usually qualified lawyers hence the comparison to us), we are doing many of the activities they are. My additional point here is that I think you, as a Contract Manager, should be working closely with Legal. Why? To make massive improvements to how your business operates from a contracts perspective. This year will be incredible if you make the most of the available opportunities. Here's what I think will happen with Contract Management: - The rise of the Contract Management Lifecycle tool/Legal Tech - Building resilience into Supplier Contracts - RISK, RISK, RISK - Simplification of Contracts

We always try to make a recording in the landscape after it's just snowed. It's so quiet. And the quiet is palpable. The effect is unique and wonderful, and is down to the way freshly fallen snow absorbs sound. By absorbing it so well though, there is virtually nothing for the microphones to pick up, and so none of these recordings have ever properly worked. Over Christmas 2014, whilst staying with family up in the hills of Derbyshire, it snowed, and snowed, for days and days. And so we recorded, and recorded, for days and days too. Each time, on playback through headphones, the spatial sense of landscape quiet, the effect we strive to capture in all our recordings, was entirely missing.  A few days later, just before ten o'clock at night, the snow began to fall again. The landscape was frozen, after days of freeze thaw. And this time, instead of absorbing sound, the icy snow was reflecting it. As the snow fell, every tiny fragment and particle of it made a sound, in varying degrees from the finest of fine dust, to sounds almost like leaves dropping, to distinctly heavier scattering ice falls. There was a lazy wind in the trees too, moving through as soft murmuring white noise. Occasionally, it was strong enough to push off the lighter accumulations of snow and ice, causing it to fall between the branches, and down onto the frozen ground below. For the first time, the snowy landscape sounded spatial, and the microphones were able to capture the feeling of being out amongst snow laden trees, within a wide open, and frozen landscape. The old clocks can be heard chiming ten inside the house, and towards the end of this unusually short episode for us, far away geese, and foxes too. Merry Christmas everyone! From Radio Lento we wish you and your family a happy and sound new year.

Over Christmas, fashion brand Boohoo cut ties with 64 garment suppliers in Leicester after it came out that factories were paying their workers as little as £3.50 an hour. Tesco Christmas Q3 Results Join Andrew Grant and Darren A. Smith in the twelfth episode of Grocery Guru: Tesco Christmas Q3 Results – 80% of sales in large stores are through Clubcard. You Can Read the Full Tesco Christmas Results Episode Transcript Below: Darren A. Smith: Welcome to week 12 with The Grocery Group. It is Andrew Grant. Andrew, hello. How are you doing? Andrew Grant: Darren, good to see you again. How are you? Darren A. Smith: Hey, I’m all right. I’m all right. Lockdown, blah, vaccination, blah. We’re not going to talk about any of that, are we? Andrew Grant: No. No. It’s still the post-Christmas results season, and I thought today … I think it was yesterday, Tesco’s Christmas results statement was released. All very good stuff. Probably exactly what you would have expected. 8% like-for-like growth. People piling into Finest Christmas products. Lots and lots of online orders. So, I think the stuff we talked about last week in regard to Morrisons and Sainsbury’s. So yeah, a very, very good festive season for Tesco, but- Darren A. Smith: You’re talking about the Q3 statement for Christmas, aren’t you, the results for Tesco Group? Andrew Grant: That’s it. Yeah. Darren A. Smith: All right. All right. Andrew Grant: Inside that statement, not particularly hidden, but towards the end of that statement was a fascinating fact. They talked about the … And it’s very rare; actually, retailers disclose their loyalty information because it’s pretty sensitive stuff. So quite surprised that Ken Murphy actually said that in large stores, 80% of their sales at Christmas were Clubcard sales linked to people swiping their Clubcard at the checkout. That’s phenomenal. Darren A. Smith: That is high. So 8 in 10 pounds that are spent in Tesco is by someone who has a Clubcard, who’s swiped. Andrew Grant: In their larger stores, which you can understand. Because obviously in the Expresses, they’re much more transitory. Darren A. Smith: Yes. Andrew Grant: People dining in for a sandwich or a bottle of water are less likely either to have a Clubcard or to swipe it. But in their bigger stores, which is obviously the vast bulk of their volume, to have 8 out of 10 customers loyal, if you like. Loyal Clubcard shoppers. And what do you think’s driven that? I don’t think it was just the Christmas effect. I think it was something else. Darren A. Smith: What’s driven that? Andrew Grant: I don’t know if you’re a Tesco shopper if you’re a regular Tesco shopper. You should have noticed. Darren A. Smith: We’re more online, but then it still happens there. So I think because I’ve had a look at the Q3 statements. I knew what you were going to talk about. I think you’re going to say it’s promotions. Andrew Grant: Yeah. I think they’d been incredibly clever. I mean, most retailers with their loyalty promotions, they’re sort of second-best. They’re sort of add-ons and throw-ins. “Oh, use your loyalty card and get a minor promotion.” What Tesco, I think, have done very, very cleverly is taken their mainstream, high-hitting promotions and made them Clubcard-only. I mean, there are some fantastic Clubcard-only offers out there. And if you haven’t got a Clubcard, you’re wandering around a Tesco thinking, “I’m missing out on some fantastic deals here.” So probably, again, data they won’t share. They probably recruited a whole army of new Clubcard customers since they’ve started those promotions. Darren A. Smith: Well, I read the Q3 statement because I knew you were going to ask about it, and one of the things I read was that the … Let’s have a look. Clubcard penetration has gone up 10 points to over 80%, which ties in with what you said, and there are 2 million more active users. Wow. Andrew Grant: Ah, I missed that bit. I should have read a bit more closely. Right. So another- Darren A. Smith: I mean, that’s truly amazing. Andrew Grant: Absolutely. I mean, and I guess the two important points out of that for our dear listeners and viewers here is those Clubcard promotions, if you want to promote with Tesco going forward, then the biggest and beefiest promotions are going to be those Clubcard ones. If you’re not all over Clubcard loyalty data, if you’re not buying it of Dunnhumby, you’re going to have another arm sort of tied behind your back when it comes to trading with Tesco. So suppliers are going to be encouraged, I guess, to spend more and more on shopper data. Darren A. Smith: Yeah, and understand it, and learn from it, and evaluate. Does the buy two, get third free work? I mean, my experience of working with a lot of clients and a lot of suppliers over the last 10 years is, they don’t all have … Actually, I’m going to go as far. I’ll say most don’t have a return on investment from the amount they spend on promotions. They don’t say, “I spend £1, I got back £1.25.” Now, this is a whole new level of complexity, which is going to make it even harder but absolutely essential. Andrew Grant: Yeah. Absolutely. Secondly, with we said that 80% figure, which is phenomenal, Tesco are now literally almost owning their shoppers. There is the old industry adage that Tesco with its Clubcard knows better than your GP when you’re going to die. Yeah, because no. They know your postcode, they know your lifestyle, they know exactly what your diet is. Darren A. Smith: Yes. Yes. Andrew Grant: I’m sure we all go to the doctors and don’t actually quite tell them how much we exactly eat. Eat and drink, and particularly how much we drink. Tesco knows exactly how much you drink when you put those seven bottles of cheap red plunk in your basket every week. They see it. Darren A. Smith: Well, it’s very true, because you get the GP questionnaire. How many units of alcohol? You think, “Is a pint just one unit?” Only one. Andrew Grant: No. Darren A. Smith: I’m going to share a couple of other facts that amaze me in here. You mentioned the like-for-like growth of Tesco, 8%. Booker with 15%, which I thought was damn pretty good. Andrew Grant: Well, considering restaurants and hospitality are shut, that is pretty good. Darren A. Smith: Yeah. So, that one amazed me. And then just a couple of other stats. Over Christmas, 7 million orders, 400 million items. Wow. And Tesco are looking after, supporting 786,000 vulnerable shoppers. I mean, some big numbers there. Some really big numbers. Andrew Grant: No, I think as we’ve said before, the supermarkets that are clear winners out of this nasty virus crisis we’ve had, they’ve been doing the right thing. Was it Morrisons announced yesterday, they’re going to be the first supermarket to pay £10 an hour? Darren A. Smith: Oh, are they? I didn’t read that. Andrew Grant: Yeah. Darren A. Smith: Oh, okay, I was going to just say something else. They pay £10 an hour. Yeah. Okay. Andrew Grant: I’m going to be applying, Darren. So, it could be the last one of these. But yeah, they’re firing on all cylinders. Just about all the supermarkets firing on all cylinders at the moment. But also, I think, tend to do the right thing as well. Darren A. Smith: Certainly seems that way. I’ve got one more stat before we wrap up. The other one I saw was that we’ve got +80% increase in online sales, which equated to another billion pounds worth of online sales over the Q3, which I think was 19 weeks at Tesco. A billion pounds worth of online sales additional. Andrew Grant: Well, I think we said at the very, very first one of these, where I trapped you into working out what UFC was, yeah. Probably their biggest challenge now is, how do they cope with that probably unstoppable growth of online? Are there going to be enough vans to go on the roads to deliver this stuff? Where I live, constantly all you see is white vans delivering Amazon, DPD, food, you name it. That growth is phenomenal, and whether they can keep up with it, and manage to pick it, and make money doing it. Because as we’ve said before, the grocers have to some extent been lucky for the last 60 years. They’ve persuaded us to be our own pickers and deliverers, and we’re now turning our backs on that. Darren A. Smith: They certainly have. So I think where that leads me to is the new battleground maybe moves away from pricing to data, to insight. Understanding our shoppers, but not just regurgitating the Nielsen, the Kantar, the IRI data. Actually turn it into something that says, “There’s £7 million worth of opportunity in the category if we do these three things. One on promotion, one on decision hierarchy, and one on availability.” Fantastic. That’s got to be the new battleground. Andrew Grant: Yeah. Price is always going to be there, and as a supplier, these retailers are going to knock seven bells out of you on price. Of course they will, because they’re still operating on tiny, tiny margins. But yeah, if you can use insight to drive profitable volume, even if you’re making very, very small margins yourself doing it, then that’s the way to grow and survive. Darren A. Smith: Okay. All right. Well, thank you, Andrew. We will see you next week for week 13, and let’s what happens in the world of grocery. Andrew Grant: Lucky 13. Darren A. Smith: Lucky 13. You take care. Over Christmas, I drove up to visit the Grand Canyon. After living in Arizona for 16 years, it was about time. Now, the “experts” up there will tell you that it was formed by the measly Colorado River over billions of years. However, I did some research and discovered that huge hole in the ground was created in one fell swoop known as the Great Flood. Yes, Noah’s flood. You can watch videos at the bottom of Christian, Bible-believing geologists telling the truth about the Grand Canyon. It only shows off God’s great power. Let’s first go through the account of the Great Flood found in Genesis. I’ve covered what was going on just before the flood in “As in the Days of Noah” from Luke 17. In March 2018 I had a live interview scheduled with Dr. Kevin Barrett on my monthly show, "The Beloved Community" on KBOO. Through a smear campaign led by Rose City Antifa complete with name-calling, character assassination, and a deluge of tweets and phone calls, the station staff and management were pressured to stop the interview and actually ban Kevin Barrett from being on the air. (Staff and management claim they were not pressured.) I appealed the decision but my appeal was never addressed. Dr. Barrett never had an opportunity to defend himself. Volunteers or the membership never had an opportunity to review this process.  On December 13th, 2019 I broadcast a pre-recorded show that included audio from the last sermon I gave to my church, an interview with Dr. David Ray Griffin and a speech Dr. Kevin Barrett delivered at a KBOO-sponsored event at Portland State in February 2018 about US-Saudi relations. Staff, in response to phone calls, stopped the broadcast in the midst of Dr. Barrett's speech and played Christmas music! In protest to this personal disrespect and censorship, I decided to take a sabbatical from my volunteer duties and support of KBOO and move my show to a platform that respects the spirit of the First Amendment. You can read my story here. Over Christmas, Dr. Barrett interviewed me for his radio show, Truth Jihad, and gave me permission and encouragement to rebroadcast that interview on my program.

I mean, it was a North Korean hacker he found on Fiverr. Like, dude, seriously? Anyhow, the end result is that now Ultima Fila desperately needs cash, mostly to pay for Andrea's next month-long trip to South East Asia. That's why today we're desperately turning to the best method for pretending you're making money online: Amazon Affiliates Links. During a visit to Nicole Scott's apartment, Andrea proceeds to enumerate all the many gadgets she owns, so now we have a proper excuse to bother our listeners with a lot of Amazon Affiliate Links in the description of this episode (and future ones). If you don't give a damn about the gadgets we're mentioning that's ok, we just want a percentage of what you're spending on Amazon. #11: eCommerce Tips for Christmas Readiness

The eCommerce Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2019 41:15

Welcome my fellow eCommerce Entrepreneurs! My name is Matt Edmundson and this show is for those of us Kurious About eCommerce and want to know how to get better at digital business.   Coming up in today's show we are talking Christmas and what your business can be doing to plan ahead and capitalize on those Christmas sales.   Eggnog and Christmas lights might be the farthest thing from your mind right now but to experience success this year you need to start thinking about how your eCommerce business is going to drive those sales and finish strong in the final quarter.   Here's 10 eCommerce tips for Christmas Readiness: 1. Plan Ahead It's never too early to start thinking and planning your sales strategy for the Christmas period. Be deliberate in your planning and create a promotional calendar in which you write down how and when you will reach your sales goals. The earlier you begin to market the more successful your sales will be.  2. Provide Gift Wrapping Services This might sound obvious but if your site sells gift-able products then also offer a gift wrapping service. Make your site a one stop shop for your customers. Not only would this be a great customer service, it will also add a few pounds to your profit margin. Yes, you can charge for this service but don't go crazy.  3. Clarify Shipping and Delivery Be very clear  with dates and time frames for shipping and delivery of all your products. Give your customers the last posting dates for Christmas for both national and international deliveries. Talk to your shipping company to get this information and then tell your customers so that they aren't disappointed.  4. Prevent Returns Use imagery, videos and detailed product descriptions so that customers know exactly what they are buying and have no surprises when they open their packages. If you're selling accessories and clothing videos are really helpful because people need to see the product on people. 5. Customer Service Your customers should always receive the best and most hassle free service at all times. This shouldn't change over the Christmas period. In fact, step it up a notch. Over Christmas customers seem more hurried and expect speedy and efficient service. Let them know exactly how and when they can reach you over the Christmas period and go the extra mile wherever you can. 6. Offers and Discounts People start to get into the buying frenzy in October and sales start to go up. Just because people are in the buying mood it doesn't mean you have to discount your products. But what I do recommend is that you begin to highlight products and create awesome offers and discounts. If you've got people who are in the buying mood, they'll more than likely take you up on your offers and discounts. 7. Be Mobile-Ready A lot of people will be shopping on their phones so make sure you take the time to optimise the mobile navigation on your site. Pay special attention to your checkout process on your mobile-site, making it user friendly and streamlined. Avoid abandoned carts wherever possible.  8. Vouchers Vouchers can be a critical part of your Christmas sales strategy. If your customers have joined the shopping frenzy later in the game and have missed shipping dates, they have the option of buying gift vouchers instead. Vouchers are also a great way to create customer engagement in the holiday slump between Christmas and New Year and or the January/ February blues.  9. Do Something for Charity Christmas is about charity as much as it is about anything else. Invite your customers to donate to a charity of your choice and or offer to match donations. Last year Jersey Beauty Company invited their customers to donate to a very specific event that Imagine If were running. Jersey's target was £2000 but through very generous customers ended up raising £2500 to help feed 300 lonely, elderly and less fortunate people on Christmas day. As a team, we got to be a part of that huge endeavor and it felt good! 10. Make it Fun Christmas can so easily become stressful but it's Christ's birthday and it's a time of giving so it has to be fun!  A few years ago Jersey created a Christmas Carpool video that was a lot of fun to make. We challenge you to throw some fun into your Christmas strategy and include your customers in the festive spirit too. Our advice, get organised and use these 10 eCommerce tips for creating your Christmas sales strategy. You'll be glad you did!  _____________________________________________________________________ Sadaf checks in with Jersey Beauty Company's Marketing Manager, Jen Oliver, to talk about Jersey's plans for Christmas.  In preparation to go live in October, Jersey Beauty Company (JBC) start to plan their Christmas sales in September of each year. They take into account factors such as landing pages, assets, content, promotions, packaging and shipping dates.  What JBC has done to drive sales over Christmas in the past:  Run offers mainly through October and November 12 days of Christmas from 19th November - these included 3 for 2 offers, vouchers, freebies, competitions etc Run gift vouchers from October right up until Christmas Offer gift wrapping service Upgrade shipping to free 24 hour delivery Hessian Santa sacks for those who spent over a certain amount, Sacks were made up on free samples and chocolates Extra touches - festive spirit What JBC plans to do this Christmas and Boxing day: Jersey Christmas boxes. These will be similar to the current Jersey beauty box which is made up of different popular brands of products. These can be used as a gift for a loved one These lovely gift boxes will have a Christmas spin on them. Gift wrapping service Hessian Santa sacks with samples. Eco-boxes for the eco-conscious. These will be made up of products such as shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes.  Keeping it simple on Boxing Day with money off vouchers. At its height more than 9,000 people from around the world lived in the camp while attempting to make it across to the UK, often hiding in the back of lorries or packed into small boats. It was hoped the camp's closure would stem the number of people risking their lives to try to get to Britain. But more than two years on has it worked? Over Christmas the Home Secretary Sajid Javid declared the number of migrants attempting to cross in boats a 'major incident' and since then more than 100 people have been picked up in 2019. She also has a sidekick, LeClaire, Luke’s mother-in-law. Luke definitely got his dance moves from his mother, bc she can cut a rug! The Bryan Family is so much fun and so inspiring. They know how to enjoy life and find joy in everyday. Caroline and I chat about her love story with Luke and how they met in college. We also talk about how she and Luke have survived tragedy. Luke lost both his siblings and brother-in-law, and took in their 3 children: a son who was in high school and 2 college age daughters to live with them and their 2 sons Bo and Tate. Caroline and Luke also started a charity, Brett’s Barn, with Caroline’s brother and sister-in-law, in honor of her brother’s daughter Brett who died at a very young age. Brett’s Barn opens its doors to sick and disabled children to come pet and love on the animals. It’s a true sanctuary. Caroline has a heart of gold and uses her life to spread love and healing and laughs. She is such an example of faith. It was amazing to hear her story with Luke and see how they have such an incredible marriage and life in the midst of the wild world of the music industry and personal heartbreak. Originally from Melbourne, Lansdown is World Paddleboard champion who works at Queensland’s Noosa beaches as a Life Guard, on standby to rescue those in need. In this episode he shares the story of how he was showing a new life saver around their patch during their first shift, when by chance he saw some swimmers caught in a rip and jokingly said “We may have a job here”. As it turned out, this happened to be a very serious situation where nearly half a dozen swimmers needed rescuing, with Lachlan bringing in an unconscious swimmer. This team effort by all involved is a story not to be missed. At just 14, Lachlan got his “surf rescue certificate” and started patrolling Noosa beach. At 15 he obtained his Bronze Medallion for surf life saving and volunteer patrols. At only the age of 18 did he became a paid professional lifeguard where he was based on the Northern Sunshine Coast. He also continued volunteer patrols, but at only 20 he was a “Patrol Captain” put charge of a patrol of 10 people. Our story picks up at the end of last season 2018 when he transferred to “Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club”. Over Christmas he was rostered to work everyday as a professional lifeguard. His only day off was Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve he was on a volunteer patrol at Sunshine beach when the incident happened. Regarding his paddleboard career, he is the holder of 6 gold medals from the ISA World Paddleboard Championship from events in Fiji, Mexico and Denmark, and is known as one of the best paddle boarders in the world at the moment. Photo Source This is not the first time that Lachlan has been in the newspapers for rescues. At the age of 15, himself and another friend pulled a woman from the water. Another job we mentioned during the podcast was one of Lachie’s first big rescue events with a car crash in the main street of Noosa. Rescue seems to run in the family. So I recently helped launch a church campus and as part of Fresh Life Church's Crash Course, you go through a series of personality tests, one of which is 16personalities.com. I'm sure most of you have done personality tests sometime in your past. I always found them somewhat hard to understand - they describe you in letters and give a little generic description and, whatever. But not this one. This one is dead on. For real though. Once you finish, it gives you one of 16 personalities, and details exactly how you act in about 10 pages. Nothing short of incredible. Of course, most of us are not just one because that would mean we'd have tons of identical people like us in the world, but I'd venture to say it gets the majority of your personality correct, and it's incredibly enlightening. Over Christmas, I had my entire family take it and it was so perfect and so funny. But the best part was that it made me understand everyone SO MUCH MORE. For example, I always wondered why my boyfriend always wanted to be in groups instead of just us two. Turns out a big part of his personality as a Consul is that they see friendship as extremely important, fun, and almost a responsibility. Or why my mom never wanted to participate in an energetic argument, because in her Mediator mind she only seeks harmony. It was truly fun to explore this about everyone, but then there was mine. Debater. I couldn't believe it. I actually thought it was wrong. Thought I should be an Adventurer or Entrepreneur! But no, I got stuck with Debater. Worse was reading the description and recognizing myself and even worse yet was my boyfriend reading it and saying "I've never read a truer description." Or maybe it was the pastor emailing me back and saying he hadn't met a Debater before. Of course, you have to embrace your personality right? Obviously, you enjoy yourself - or I should hope you do! So here's my motto and it says, "Smart and curious thinkers who cannot resist an intellectual challenge." To be honest, I never before had thought of myself as debating person. Yes I like to speak my side and have a jolly ol conversation around things, but now I realize I actually often push my ideas for the fun of it. What I failed to realize all this time is that not everyone likes to play this, let's banter back and forth for the fun of it, game. It made me realize that times I think I'm sharing smart information, I might actually come off as too much. This was incredible for me to hear. Apparently, we Debaters only make up about 3% of the population, which is probably a good thing so we aren't all endlessly debating ideas, but also a good thing because it's unique. Because along with everything else, there are some cool tendencies I found to be true, too. We enjoy reworking systems creatively, we live to become more knowledgeable about subjects just for the fun of it, we think logically in emotional situations, and best of all we're known to be charismatic and energetic. So now what? I believe the trick becomes harnessing the good qualities while approaching the less than ideal qualities day by day. No, I'm not saying attempt to change your personality, I'm suggesting borrowing some good qualities from others. As a purely logical thinker, it's next to impossible for me to make judgments emotionally. But a lot of people are very emotional decision makers, and so it would do good for me to allow emotions to enter conversations along with logic, and not just dismiss emotionally charged conversations as nonsense. And as for arguments that arise, I could add a bit of compassion to my lively debates. Allowing ideas from another view never hurt anyone and would probably help my case in the long run. But how do we change when these things are so ingrained in us? Well first, by knowing yourself. You must be able to recognize your faults and strengths. And then by reigning them in.

Giles Morgan left HSBC towards the end of 2017 and now, he says, he's free to say what he really thinks about sponsorship, about sport, about who's getting it right, and, more pertinently, who's getting it wrong. Over his 12-year career leading HSBC's sponsorship activities, Morgan sanctioned the spend of over a billion dollars. Over Christmas biscuits and a cup of strong tea in his kitchen, our conversation covers: - Why he left one of the best jobs in global sport; - Storytelling and a new nomenclature for sponsorship; - Toxic rights holders and risk assessment; golf’s issue with women and how HSBC pressed for change; British Cycling’s governance issue - and how a sponsor’s position can remain tenable in adversity; - Why sponsors need to get edgier in their associations and talk the language of the fan; - Iconic stadiums as marketing collateral and why some - such as the London Stadium - fail to attract the naming rights sponsorship they want; - Why there's a lack of takers for a string of blue-riband sponsorship opportunities across British sport; - When hospitality activation goes wrong - an episode from a Lions tour.

Over Christmas time I was home with my family on the east coast and we got really excited to go see the new Mary Poppins movie coming out on Christmas Day. When I was little Mary Poppins was my absolute favorite movie. For four days we were looking forward to it. When we went to look up movie times on December 26, we realized that it wasn’t coming out until Christmas Day 2018!! With Mary Poppins on my brain, I wanted to do a fun Sunday Sermon on some of my favorite lessons from the movie. I had three in mind, and when I went searching for the exact quotes to support them, an unexpected fourth popped up, too. Enjoy and share! xo

Jason Chaffetz: Last July I was proud to see our committee favorably report the bill by a voice vote. Unfortunately, it didn’t make it across the finish line before the end of the Congress, but we did make a lot of progress, particularly with getting the CBO—the Congressional Budget Office—to come in and score the bill. 6:10 Rep. Jason Chaffetz: In an era of partisan politics, this legislation represents a significant bipartisan compromise. The bill gives the Postal Service the freedom it needs to successfully meet the business realities the agency faces. To do this, the bill allows the Postal Service to fully integrate its healthcare plans with Medicare. With such integration, the Postal Service can virtually wipe out its 52-billion-dollar retiree healthcare unfunded liability. Further, the bill achieves real savings by moving to more-efficient mail delivery, saving the Postal Service more than $200 a year for each address that can be converted from the door-to-door delivery to centralized delivery. The bill also helps the agency more accurately evaluate its cost structure and reforms key governance matters. 8:10 Rep. Elijah Cummings: The other thing I thank you for, Mr. Chairman, is so often what happens is that when a lot of work has been done in one term, it’s just tossed away, and then you have to start all over again. But I thank you for picking up where we left off. 10:40 Rep. Elijah Cummings: The total volume of mail handled by the Postal Service has fallen by more than 25% since 2006, and continued declines are expected. The cost of the Postal Service’s operations have also risen, in part because the Postal Service is required to provide universal delivery service to every address in the United States. Every year, about 900,000 new addresses are created in this country; and a network of postal facilities, letter carriers, and workers must expand to deliver to every new address—900,000; that’s a lot. The Postal Service is burdened by a 2006 statutory requirement imposed by Congress to fully pre-fund its liabilities for retiree healthcare costs, a requirement that no other federal agency or private-sector company faces. These liabilities, combined with the Postal Service’s unfunded pension liabilities, currently total about $125 billion, which is almost double its annual revenues. Even as it fixed costs continued to grow, the exigent rate increase that had been approved to enable the Postal Service to recoup some of the losses incurred because of a 2008 recession’s permanent impact on mail volume expired. Since 2006 the Postal Service has implemented significant cost-saving measures, including reducing positions and work hours, and consolidating facilities and delivery routes. 14:08 Rep. Elijah Cummings: Taking all these requirements and trends together, the Postal Service reported a net loss of $5.3 billion for fiscal year 2016, which represents a 10th consecutive year of net losses. We have repeatedly discussed the deteriorating financial condition at the Postal Service in this committee, but the situation is now worsened by unprecedented lack of any Senate-confirmed members on the Postal Service’s Board of Governors. Because many key management decisions are reserved by statute to the Senate-confirmed board members, there are many actions, such as establishing rates, class, and fees for products, that the Postal Service simply cannot take now. The need for postal reform is as urgent as it ever was. Fortunately, we also may be closer than ever to enacting reform. We must press ahead—all of us. 18:50 Rep. Gerald Connolly: I want to commend Chairman Chaffetz and Ranking Member Cummings for their leadership in holding together this coalition—not easy—and it’s a bipartisan coalition that helped write this bill. And especially Chairman Chaffetz could have yielded to the temptation, in light of the circumstances of 2017, to start all over again, and he didn’t do that. We worked together, we held it together, and I want to thank all the stakeholders represented in this room and those not in this room for understanding we can’t let perfect be the enemy of the good. 24:25 Megan Brennan: The Postal Service is self-funded. We pay for our operations through the sale of postal products and services and do not receive tax revenues to support our business. Over the past decade, total mail volume declined by 28%. First-class mail, which makes the greatest contribution to covering the cost of our networks, declined by 36%. In response, we have streamlined our operations, restructured our networks, reduced the size of our workforce, and improved productivity. As a result of these efforts, we’ve achieved annual cost savings of approximately $14 billion. We also successfully stabilized marketing-mail revenues and grew our package business, which together drive e-commerce growth. However, given the constraints imposed by law, all of those actions cannot offset the negative impacts caused by the consistent decline in the use of first-class mail. The Postal Service is required to maintain an extensive network necessary to fulfill our universal service obligation to deliver the mail to every address six days a week, regardless of volume. The cost of the network continues to grow as approximately one million new delivery points are added each year. However, less volume, limited pricing flexibility, and increasing costs means that there is less revenue to pay for our growing delivery network and to fund other legally mandated costs. Since 2012 the Postal Service has been forced to default on $33.9 billion in mandated payments for retiree health benefits. Without these defaults, the deferral of critical capital investments, and aggressive management actions, we would not have been able to pay our employees and suppliers, or deliver the mail. Despite our achievements in growing revenue and improving operational efficiency, we cannot overcome systemic financial imbalances caused by business-model constraints. 26:40 Megan Brennan: We believe there is broad support for the core provisions of the bill you have introduced. By enacting this urgently needed legislation, which includes those provisions, the Postal Service can achieve an estimated $26 billion in combined cost reductions and new revenue over five years. Enactment of these provisions, favorable resolution of the Postal Regulatory Commission’s pricing-review system, and continued aggressive management actions will return the Postal Service to financial stability. Medicare integration is the cornerstone of your bill. The civilian federal government is not required to pre-fund retiree health benefits, but that obligation is imposed on the Postal Service. We are merely asking to be treated like any business that offers health benefits to its retirees and has to fund them. Full integration with Medicare is a universally accepted best practice in private sector. Requiring full Medicare integration for Postal Service retirees would essentially eliminate our unfunded liability for retiree health benefits. It is simply a matter of fairness to enable the Postal Service and our employees to fully utilize the benefits for which we have paid. We also strongly endorse the provision of the bill that would restore half of the exigent rate increase as a permanent part of our rate base. That provision will help us pay for the infrastructure necessary to fulfill our universal service obligation. 28:20 Megan Brennan: H.R. 756 is fiscally responsible and enables the Postal Service to invest in the future and to continue to provide affordable, reliable, and secure delivery service to every business and home in America. 30:30 Robert Taub: H.R. 756 is specifically designed to put the Postal Service on sound financial footing. 33:43 Lori Rectanus: The continued deterioration of the Postal Service’s financial condition is simply a truth that revenues are not keeping up with expenses, a trend since 2007. This means that over the last decade the Postal Service has had a net loss of over $60 billion. While much of this loss was in fact due to the nonpayment of retiree health pre-funding payments, the Postal Service still lost over $10 billion outside of this requirement and other requirements. The revenue-expense gap occurs because first-class mail, the most profitable mail, continues to decline and is now down to 1981 levels. The Postal Service has made significant efforts to grow revenue in other ways, such as with package services. In the meantime, however, expenses continue to grow, largely because of compensation and benefit payments for employees. This is due to salary increases, as well as a larger workforce, in the past several years to support the more labor-intensive package business. In fact, over the past three years, the workforce has actually increased by over 20,000 people, contrasting sharply with prior years when its size decreased greatly. 38:15 Arthur Sackler: We support this bill and urge its approval as promptly as possible. 41:26 Arthur Sackler: H.R. 756 provides an elegant solution to this profound financial problem, integrating postal annuitants into Medicare will save the Postal Service billions each year and follow the best practices of the private sector. Companies that offer health insurance to employees and retirees generally require them to join Medicare at age 65. 42:06 Arthur Sackler: The implications of this bleak financial situation are near existential for Postal Service in its current form, so we support H.R. 756 notwithstanding its one-time market-dominant postal rate increase of 2.15%. We accept this increase in this unique set of circumstances only as necessary to achieve this bill and stabilize the Postal Service. Congress has wisely delegated rate setting to the postal agencies, but with respect, the industry will be compelled to oppose any effort to regard this bill as a precedent for other legislated rate increases. The industry has long supported the self-sustaining postal system, funded entirely by postage. That remains the best course from our perspective. And that is the beauty of your bill. It vastly improves the Postal Service’s financial stability, keeps the Postal Service self-sustaining, and wards off any prospect of a taxpayer bailout, as you noted, Mr. Chairman. 44:25 Fredric Rolando: The bill has broad support across the mailing industry, including business and labor, and is based on best practices in the private sector. 45:30 Fredric Rolando: Over the past decade, postal employees have worked diligently to restructure operations, cut costs, and sharply increase productivity, in response to technological change and the Great Recession. Despite the loss of more than 200,000 jobs, we’ve managed to preserve our networks and to maintain our capacity to serve the nation. But only Congress can address our biggest financial challenge: the unique and unsustainable burden to pre-fund future retiree health benefits decades in advance. No other enterprise in the country faces such a burden, which was imposed by legislation in 2006. The expense of this mandate has accounted for nearly 90% of the Postal Service’s reported losses since 2007. Without a change in the law, the mandate will cost $6 billion this year alone. H.R. 756 would maximize the integration of Medicare and our federal health program for Medicare-eligible postal annuitants, most of whom have already voluntarily enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. The proposal would also give us access to low-cost prescription drugs and other benefits provided to private-employer plans by the Medicare Modernization Act. The savings would help to reduce all of our premium costs and, therefore, pre-funding costs. This approach adopts a standard practice of large private companies that provide retiree health insurance. It would effectively resolve the pre-funding burden that undermines the health of the Postal Service while only raising Medicare spending by one-tenth of one percent over 10 years. H.R. 756 also addresses a revenue shortfall caused by the expiration of the 2013 exigent rate increase, authorized by the Postal Regulatory Commission, to help the Postal Service recover from the permanent decline in mail volume caused by the Great Recession. The compromise adopted by your leadership bill, effectively restoring half of the exigent increase, is a reasonable one. 48:00 Fredric Rolando: All four postal unions urge the committee to adopt this legislation. 52:06 Rep. Jason Chaffetz: What is your current cash on hand; and then once you give me that number, then why isn’t that used to pay some of the payments that were due? You’ve defaulted, I believe, on five payments. Megan Brennan: Yes, Mr. Chairman, we’ve defaulted for the past five years to the tune of $33.9 billion. Our current cash on hand is $8.2 billion. And a determination was made by the Temporary Emergency Committee, which consisted at the time of our lone independent governor, myself, and the deputy postmaster general, to default on that payment to ensure that we can serve sufficient cash, which for an organization of our size is arguable at best, but to reserve sufficient cash to ensure if there was any contingency that would occur in the near term, we could at least have some cushion. Chaffetz: I mean, you have more cash than some of the others who are in the mail industry, but where is that proper balance? Where’s… ? Brennan: When I think—that’s a concern, Mr. Chairman, because for an organization that has expenditures of more than $70 billion a year, we would submit that $8.2 billion is insufficient. That’s the concern for us. And, also, as noted by the Chairman, and we’ve discussed this, the fact that we have deferred on critical capital investments in the past five years to the tune of over $8.9 billion, that impacts our ability to compete and to generate additional revenues. Chaffetz: Tell us, if you can give me a perspective on your fleet management. There was a hearing I think Chairman Meadows chaired earlier about the fleet. We were concerned the Postal Service was going to come up with a very sizeable contract to… Explain to me, where you are in the fleet and your perspective on it. Brennan: Yes, Mr. Chairman. Well, we have one of the largest civilian fleets in the country, with over 212,000 vehicles travelling more than four million miles a day. The fleet, though, is at the end of its expected life, particularly our delivery vehicles that the average age is over 25 years, and the annual maintenance cost is over a billion dollars. So, we have an approach to look at the next-generation delivery vehicles, that currently we’re in the midst of a prototype-testing period where we’re working with six different suppliers to provide us with these vehicles that we will test over the course of the next 18 months. We also just—this week, actually—a request for proposal for a commercial off-the-shelf solution for right-hand-drive vehicles is expected. So, we’ve got a multi-prong approach looking at how to address the vehicle fleet. 58:35 Rep. Stephen Lynch: There are some concerns out there about the funding of that piece that will require postal employees to sign up for Medicare and that it is some type of giveaway. That’s what I’ve heard out there. Now, you and I know differently. But could you explain to me how much money the postal workers have contributed to Medicare but, in large part, have not participated in that? Could you describe that for me, please? Megan Brennan: Yes, Congressman. In our opinion, this is a question of fairness. We’re merely asking that we be treated like any other self-funded entity that provides retiree health benefits. As noted by a number of the panelists, it’s best practice in private sector. And that’s the ask from the Postal Service, and our employees and the Postal Service have paid more than $30 billion into the Medicare trust fund since the early ’80s. We’re just asking to receive the benefit for which employees have paid. 1:03:35 Rep. Blake Farenthold: You mentioned that part of your expenses is six-day delivery to everywhere. Is it worth looking at, at some point in the future, maybe not six days to everywhere for everything? I mean, to be competitive, maybe you do need six. And, actually, I think one of your competitor’s advantage is seven-day package delivery. Over Christmas, I got packages from Amazon that you guys brought on Sunday. Matter of fact, I got one a couple of weeks ago. Apparently you’re still doing it. So, is shrinking to a less-than-six-day delivery for non-packages a potential cost savings? Megan Brennan: Yeah, as you noted, we are delivering packages seven days in select locations, primarily major metropolitan areas. Farenthold: I’m happy Corpus Christi, Texas, is now a major metropolitan area. Brennan: I said primarily. And we are expanding that, because, certainly, we serve every home— Farenthold: Right. Brennan: —and every business, Congressman. To your point, and candidly, we’ve spent the better part of the past two years trying to build a coalition around core provisions of a bill likely to generate broad support. Farenthold: Right. Brennan: And that’s what we focused on. And, also, I would offer candidly, it’s been my experience that there’s no congressional consensus around moving to five-day delivery. Farenthold: Oh, I could tell you that for sure, as well. 1:06:02 Rep. Blake Farenthold: You talked about capital expenses, your biggest being vehicles. What are your big capital—just list off a couple of items that are your big capital items beyond vehicles. Megan Brennan: The information systems, our IT infrastructure, repair and alteration, facility modifications, additional capacity for package sortation. 1:17:56 Rep. Darrell Issa: Additionally, the United States Post Office, with the power of the government, if they chose to aggressively site in or near people’s homes cluster boxes that could safely hold packages, they would leapfrog in service capability what Amazon is trying to build at your corner gas station, wouldn’t they. And I guess I should take that to the postmaster general. Not, what are the problems, but if you did that, wouldn’t you, in fact, offer a service far better and far more distributed than that which Amazon is trying to build today in some parts of urban America? Megan Brennan: Congressman Issa, as you and I discussed, the Postal Service approach is all new, possible deliveries. As noted—excuse me—we add nearly a million a year. Based on the delivery characteristics, we either implement box on post at the end of your driveway or centralized delivery. And just looking at last year, where when we looked at the growth by mode, over 750,000 new deliveries were centralized. So, there's certainly an efficiency gain associated with that. 1:26:40 Rep. Jody Hice: One of the issues that came up specifically dealt with Amazon and a serious competitor that they are, and one of the areas of technology that they’ve excelled in, obviously, is drone delivery. Is there any looking into consideration of drone delivery with the Postal Service? Megan Brennan: Currently, our engineering group is researching, and we’re probably on the peripheral of this advanced technology, currently just learning. And I would say whether it’s drone exploration or any other type of new technology, Congressman, we need the capital monies to be able to invest. Hice: Well, I understand the need for capital monies to invest, but you are looking into the possibility? Brennan: We’re exploring and recognizing what’s happening in the industry. Right now, we’re not an early adopter, I would categorize that, but we’re certainly aware of what’s happening in that space. Hice: Okay, so, at the current time, then, the commitment is to continue with the vehicle delivery. Brennan: Correct. 1:45:15 Rep. Mark Meadows: The gentleman recognizes the gentleman with the stylish glasses, from Missouri, for five minutes. Rep. William Lacy Clay: And, Mr. Chair, I noticed that the ranking member took some of my time. Oh, no—they restarted. Very good. Meadows: The gentleman will recognize that the chairman is always fair with— Clay: All right. Meadows: —his time. Clay: The— Meadows: We’re glad the gentleman from Missouri could get out of bed to come to this hearing. 1:49:00 Megan Brennan: We just recently, Congressman, raised prices on our market dominant, within that strict price cap— Unknown Speaker: Yeah. Brennan: —of eight-tenths of a percent. We also have the 10-year price review before the Commission, currently. 1:51:23 Rep. Mark Meadows: Well, you said all four unions support this bill, with no changes. Is that correct? With no changes, you support this bill, all four unions. Fredric Rolando: Yeah, all four unions support this bill. I think we mentioned two tweaks in the written testimony that we thought would be helpful. Meadows: Yeah, and then, but if those two tweaks don’t get done, this is better than— Rolando: Totally support this bill coming out of committee. Absolutely. 2:07:14 Arthur Sackler: I think that with the establishment of so much trust and reliance on electronic media, there is little that can be done to reverse some of the outflow of mail. But if you add a huge increase on top of that, it’s going to accelerate it dramatically. That’s the worry of the industry. Rep. Glenn Grothman: Okay, you consider the 2.1% not a significant increase? Is that what you’re telling us? Sackler: It is significant, but it is one that, to put it colloquially, we’re all holding our noses and accepting in the spirit of compromise in order to get this bill done. People always ask, "WHERE SHOULD I START"? Well... here you go :) What's going on everyone? This is Steve Larsen and you're listening to Sales Funnel Radio. Now, I don't know about you guys, but I would love to hear maybe a new podcast intro. Now, I've not made one. However, I do want to know if you want to have a new podcast intro. If you wouldn't mind, reach out to me and let me know. We're almost to Episode 60, which is crazy, but I honestly, I wouldn't be ... There's been many times I fall asleep and the podcast intro that I currently have right now just keeps running through my head so anyway, super excited for this episode. Welcome to Sales Funnel Radio. Welcome to Sales Funnel Radio where you'll learn marketing strategies to grow your online business using today's best internet sales funnels. Now here's your host, Steve Larsen. All right, all right, all right. Hey, and I'm so excited for today and for what I'm going to share with you because I got some really huge news. Hope you guys had a great weekend. It was Memorial Day Weekend recently and my family was all out. We were having fun. We got up early. We went on a run. We went to the park. We hiked just a little, small little ... It was really steep for my little girls. I have a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old so whatever they can handle, but it was really fun. It was awesome. After we went on this hike, right, a park was nearby and what we did is we went down to this park. We're playing and having fun and my little girl's 3 years old, she's running around and there's tons of people there, right. As a parent, you're on red alert. You're looking around like crazy all over the place, making sure everything's fine, making sure there's no creepers around. You know what I mean? Now, I am all for my kids getting their own scrapes and bumps in life. You know what I mean? I'm not going to let them get hurt on purpose, but it's going to happen anyway so, I might as well not be helicopter parent and rather actually go and just prepare them for those experiences. You know what I mean? There's a point to this story, I promise. I wasn't too surprised when there was some kid politics that started and these kids started getting in my little girl's face and just screaming at her. At first, I sit forward, I'm sitting on the side and it was crazy hot out so I was sitting in the shade, but I was watching her. I was watching closely, seeing what's happening, and this little kid starts getting off on my little's girl's face. She's 3, right. She's 3 years old. What are you going to do? She's a little girl. She barely understands what's going around her still. You know what I mean? She's barely becoming self-aware kind of. You know what I mean? My resting state is nice guy personally. Steve Larsen, I'm a nice guy. That's my resting state. That's how I currently am. However, there was this ... Man, there's few things that will set me off and make Papa Bear come out and I have no ... I actually like when Papa Bear comes out. I invite Papa Bear to come out whenever it can. It's kind of fun. Anyway, this kid starts almost physically getting at ... His brother was standing nearby and he started getting really close to my little girl. Suddenly, the brother is holding back this younger kid from, I don't know, hitting or tackling whatever my girl. My little girl is so funny. She's so much like me. In the face of danger whenever there's high stress or whatever, I tend to laugh and it's not always that it's a funny experience or whatever that's going on. It's literally just that sometimes there's nothing you can do about it so you just laugh like whatever and it makes really serious things calm down. That just egged on this kid, right. My little girl starts laughing. It just egged him on and I was ... Anyway, he starts getting too aggressive though with her. I'm watching from across the playground. I stood up real fast and I walked over there because he was trying to push her and shove her really hard and there wasn't anything behind her. She would've fallen off the playground pretty far into the ground. Papa Bear comes out, right, and I come out and I start getting out and I'm hoosh, I'm trying to be cool, but at the same time, I want to throw this kid through a window. You know what I mean? I get really pissed off about that kind of stuff. There's no reason to be a jerk in life. Anyway, I go over and I walk up to this kid and I was like, "Hey, chump, why don't you stop throwing my girl around, huh?" The kid started bawling and it shocked him so much that I was standing there and I guess you would say I was calling him names. I called him a chump, all right, whatever. There's worse things I could probably say to him, but the kid starts bawling loudly. I was like, "Uh, whatever," and I just walked around, I was like, "Come on, Brinley," and I took my little girls and we went into another part of the playground. It was a big playground. Two seconds later and I'm like, "Crap," and I can feel parents eyes on me and I'm like, "Uh, whatever," like I don't ... Anyway, whatever. We're playing around over this other part of the playground and pretty soon, this really heated mom comes walking up to me and she goes, "Excuse me. Did you just call my kid a chump?" I turned around and I was like, "Yes, I did." She's like, "Why?" It's like, "Because he's pushing my little girl around. He can't do that. You understand?" She just stood there for a little while and then, she just turned around and walked away. Look, there's no room to be a chump in this life, all right... If you're going to be a chump and if you're a chump and you're on my podcast, you can get out of my community. You know what I mean? That's my attitude about it. Life's too dang short to be a chump. Don't be a chump. Don't be a chump in business. Don't try and be all sneaky. I got people who steal from me. I can't stand people like that. If I ever find people who's stealing from me, I just block them out immediately and I ... I was talking to Russell about this, you guys. My mentality is to give and give and give and give and give as much as I possibly can, overdeliver every freaking time I launch anything, every time I put anything out, any time I do anything so that when somebody turns around and they come back to me and they say, "Hey, you know what, I think that you should've done this or you're not doing enough here or you're not doing this or you're not ... " I'm like holy crap, I am bleeding, bending over backwards, giving way more than I should, that sets me off. You know what I mean? I know that probably a lot of you guys are probably the exact same way if you're in this community with me, right, the Sales Funnel Broker, Sales Funnel Radio, stevejlarsen.com community. You know what I mean? If you're in this, we're very similar people is what I've noticed. Birds of a feather flock together. I actually truly believe that and it's one of the major reasons that I wanted to start a podcast thing was because I was tired of the people I was hanging around and I wanted other people who thought like I did in my community. You know what I mean? Anyways, the types of people out there who are going to steal from me and stuff like that, I do believe in an element of karma. It's going to come around. It's going to nip you in the butt. You know what I mean? The other part is that man, if that parent and the same is true for you as an entrepreneur, if you're not bridled enough to function in society or let's say parent ... Anyways, I'm not trying to get into parenting stuff, but what I feel like is that if my little girl goes out and she's doing something that's stupid, it's my job to correct it or else society is going to correct it for me later on down the line and they're going to be way less nice about it. You know what I mean? I feel like those kinds of thing ... Anyways, I'm not trying to get into a big ranting thing about that, but my gosh, I was laughing so hard. Finally, I was like man ... I was talking to my wife, like, "Alyssa, we should probably get out of here because these parents are going to rage at the fact that I just called this kid a chump and made him bawl." I don't really freaking care. Anyway, I think it's funny. It's the same attitude when people come to me like, "What? You gave all this stuff to me and it's super, super cheap, but you're not bending over backwards to make sure that I'm successful with it." I'm like, "Dude, it is not my fault if you can't figure it out. I have overdelivered. I've given tons of walkthrough guides. I have given so much stuff like crazy. If you can't figure it out, I'm sorry. You can hire me as a coach, but I'm not going to keep giving stuff away to you for free. My time is more valuable than your feelings." You know what I mean? It was weird for me to cross that threshold as an entrepreneur and as a business guy just because in the past, I was all about just giving and giving and giving and I still am, but eventually, I was like, "My gosh, I got to self-preserve here. I've got to create a way for me to still live, still have a family life." You know what I mean? Still do the things I want to in life or I will literally spend all day every day ... I had 100 notifications in Facebook just two days ago. It was in a single day. My email was at 200 a week ago. It's at 900 now in a week. You guys know what I mean? You all are going to be there. I know especially, you all are going to be there for sure if you're not already. Anyway, don't be a chump. Hey, I got some good news though. That wasn't the good news. I told you I had good news at the beginning of this episode. I got great news. I've been working ... Over Christmas, my dad and I, we got together and I flew over there a few days early and I did it for the explicit reason of sitting down with him and beginning to build out his webinar. He's got this cool software that lets him trade the futures market, E-mini specifically, and he's been doing it for about six years. He learned that basically for him to be successful, he's got to create this thing that didn't exist before and he's a software engineer so he could create it. He created this cool software that sits on top of a trading platform and it tells him whenever to get in and out of a trade and he wins like crazy on the thing. I can't tell you legally because I can't make any kind of income claims, but he wins a lot. He's like, "Do you think anyone would ever buy this?" I was like, "Oh, my gosh, Dad, yes." He showed it to me and my jaw dropped. I did some stocks and options trading for a while and I definitely understand what he was showing. When he showed it, I was like, "Oh, my gosh, that's amazing." Anyways, fast-forward, so over Christmas, we were building out a webinar, putting all stuff together. He ended coming to what Russell and I are calling the FHAT event, the Funnel Hack-A-Thon, FHAT event. It's F-H-A-T. He came to this for a three-day intensive and he figured all this stuff out and then he's like, "Okay, Stephen, at the very last Saturday in May, I want to launch this thing." I said, "Cool. Let me help you." I slept probably three, maybe four, sometimes five hours every single night for the last week and we got this thing put together. It was really cool. If you want to check it out, you can. I'm not promoting it. It's just so you can check it out if you want to and actually, I know there's quite a few of you guys that are stock traders or financial markets traders in my community as well, which I think is really cool, super, super awesome industry there. Anyways, you can go to financialinvestingsecrets.com. It was a good webinar and I was so proud of him. We got out there and he went and he just launched it and made money and it was his first webinar ever. You know what? He did half of it wrong. You know what I mean? He just did it though. He just did it. He got out. He executed. He just did it. I was so proud of him. It was so cool. He wasn't expecting to make any money. I was wondering. It was his first time ever doing anything like this. He's just barely launching his own podcast, barely getting these things up and running. Super smart. You know what I mean? He's not a salesman, he's not ... but he's, oh, my gosh, such a smart engineer. He's created a lot of industry standards in the software world, anything from watches to NASA rockets. He's very smart. Much of how things are coded and as far as on a code sense architected is because of the way he has put stuff together. He's very, very smart... Anyway, he ... I'm just really pumped for him. He went out. We had 55 people register and about 13 showed up, which actually for the metrics that Russell always teaches is the exact same metrics that always will happen, about a fourth show up and we had ... I haven't looked at the final numbers yet, but then we had people buy. It was really exciting. His first webinar ever, it's so cool. A lot of people will sit at this point and go, "Okay, now what do we do next?" You know what I mean? It was from you guys, I asked you guys if you wanted to come and 50 of you guys signed up and 12 of you showed up or 13 of you showed up, which is what I was expecting. We were expecting. We're just testing it to see how it worked, right. What do you do next at this point? You do what we call the Dream 100. I don't know if you guys have ever been doing this. If you haven't been doing it and you've been actively driving ads, you are leaving so much freaking money on the table. I can't even believe it. At the last Funnel Hack-A-Thon event, it was the third day. I was on stage the whole day. I was speaking. It was really, really exciting and I really, really loved it, but one of the whole things we teach you guys about is this concept called the Dream 100 and we hope you guys go through it. What I'm having my dad do right now is he's got his webinar and we're continuing to make tweaks. We're continuing to make little adjustments here and there, but honestly, the thing that I'm having him do now is writing out a list of all the people who are podcasting in the financial market world, all the people who have blogs in the financial market world, all the people who have YouTube channels, who have live trading rooms, anybody who has an audience, anybody who has any kind of list or a following where my dad would want to sell to them. While we're getting Facebook ads up and running, we are starting to "date" or "court" these people on this Dream 100 list. We're starting to reach out to them. We'll probably send a package out to them soon. We got to smoosh them up just a little bit. You know what I mean? This is a relationship business. Internet marketing is still a relationship business especially, especially for the way you do sales funnels and the way we teach because what we're going to go do is we're going to go ... we want them to promote his webinar. He's got a great software that he personally wrote that helps him trade the E-minis with great success. You know what I mean? Anyway, that's what we're doing right now though. When you think about this ... I'm trying to think where to start on this because when you think about where we came from and this whole journey that he's currently on right now, a lot of times what people will start doing is they're like, "Okay, I've got this webinar, and I'm going to go build this webinar." Let's say they're just starting out, brand spanking new. They haven't done anything yet. They've never even put anything together. They've never even sold anything. They've never ... You know what I mean? Brand new. What a lot of people do we've noticed is they'll create what we call the value letter, right. They'll go, "Okay, first, we'll have low ticket items and it'll be in this whole funnel. Then I'm going to send them to this mid-range funnel and there's a whole funnel for that. Then I'm going to send them to this really high ticket thing and then the whole funnel for that as well." The tendency for people is to turn around and build a tripwire funnel or a low ticket funnel first, and I will tell you that is not the way we do it. That is not the way we do it whenever Russell and I build for a client. That's not the way I personally do it whenever I build for a client. There's very few circumstances where we actually start with a low ticket front end funnel, very, very, very few scenarios. The reason is because it's so much harder to make the numbers work. If I'm selling a $50 knickknack versus a $1,000 product, I can spend so much more money to acquire a customer, right. Now that my dad needs some sales, he can spend a good chunk of money to get one person to buy and I doubt it's going to cost us $1,000 to sell a $1,000 product, right. Now it's just the big rinse and repeat game... How much can we tweak it? How much can we get more traffic into it? How can we fill it up? Does that make sense? That's the reason ... I don't know if you guys have heard of the Two Comma Club Coaching Program that Russell and I are doing. It's so, so fun. My gosh, just oh, I absolutely love what I do on that thing. Anyways, we teach people though how to make $1 million funnel and we help them hit what we call the Two Comma Club, right, $1 million. We don't actually start with a tripwire funnel and I've had a few people reach out and ask that like "Cool, I got this sweet webinar. You guys help me plan. When do I start the tripwire funnel?" Like you know what? Probably not 'til like six months of it being successful are you even going to start thinking about that. People are like, "What? That's so crazy. Oh, my gosh. That's nuts. How is it that you can do that? How is that you ... You know what I mean? People will start to do that and they'll start to think that. I understand why that would be a temptation because as you read a book like DotCom Secrets or you read other books where it talks about increasing value or monetizing your audience, things like that, the tendency is to think I must start with this low ticket item and then I will go to this mid range item and then I'll go to this really high ticket item. I will tell you that the majority of the time when we actually build funnels, it's actually the opposite. We start at the top and we work down. Here's the reason why. It's funny. We had this four-hour Q&A last Friday with the Two Comma Club Coaching Program and a lot of these guys are out there and they're asking this very same question. They're like, "Why would you do it that way?" Let me take you through it. Here's why. Here's why. Number one, I already told you that the numbers are going to work better, right. You're just going to do better just simply by starting at the top because if you start with a high ticket item, how many people does it take to really start turning some revenue? One? Two? You know what I mean? You probably know where to find those kinds of people. You know where those communities are. If people aren't willing to give you that money yet, it means you haven't proven yourself yet. Go do it for free for a few people, all right. I'm talking about high ticket application style funnels where it's 10,000 to 15,000 to 25,000 to 50,000. You know what I mean? Higher than 10,000 is usually what I'm talking about when I say high ticket application funnels. People are applying to work with you, right. You got to go get crazy results, lots of great results, right. Either you're starting at that spot or you're starting one step down, which is what we teach at the Two Comma Club Coaching level, which is the webinar funnel, right. At the webinar funnel, what you can do is you start to get all these people in, right, tons of people, and you start tweaking the offering, you start tweaking the message and you start tweaking your traffic sources and you start finding out which ads convert the best. You know what I mean? You start figuring this whole thing out. What happens after a while, right? What happens after a while? What happens after a while is you're going to start getting a ton of questions, lots of questions. Man, you know what, I wish that the products from your webinar, I wish it did this. Or you know what, I wish it was this? What if it had this capability? Or how come this isn't here? You know what I mean? You're going to start to get questions. You'll start to get support questions. As those come in, document them because what's going to happen is very, very slowly, sometimes slowly or suddenly, whatever it is, but clearly, there will be this area that starts to rise up and you'll be like, "Oh, my gosh. You know what, I wish that I was selling something like that," right, and you'll go over ... What's happening is the market is showing you which product to create next. Does that make sense? If you are able to go through and massage out a $1,000 to $2,000 product offer and actually get it converting, get it selling, you've already laid so much groundwork for a smaller low ticket front end product funnels in the future. It's just the way it works. Because all of a sudden, what's going to happen is you're going to turn around and people are going to say, "Oh, my gosh, I wish I had X, Y and Z." What are they doing? They're telling you what they want and then all you do is you go create it. Why did Russell go make something like Funnel Scripts? Because people asked for it. He didn't start with Funnel Scripts, right. He made Click Funnels. He figured out his $1,000 webinar. He figured out how to sell something for $1,000 that sold Click Funnels, that got continuity going, right. That was the hard part. Once he got this hard part down, then he can turn around and he starts going, "What are all these [funnel 00:19:47] things? You know what? Let's build this thing called Funnel Immersion, Funnel Scripts. You know what? How about Funnel Graffiti." It's all these things related to the core offer, right, that eventually ascend somebody up into the Click Funnels level. It's the exact same thing that I'm trying to tell you to do. It's the exact same thing I was trying to tell my dad to do. Don't worry about small ticket stuff at first. That would be my advice. Now, other people would tell you different, that's totally fine, but my advice, do not start with something small. Start with something at least $1,000. There was a lot of people on the call who were like, "A thousand dollars? You really think people are going to give me $1,000?" I can hear your questions right now as I'm saying that. The answer is it depends on if you charge $1,000. What's easier to do is simply just put down the price point, 997 and then figure out how you can justify that price point. What is an offer that is so ridiculously cool that someone would give you $1,000 for it? Does that make sense? Instead of thinking, "Oh, no one will ever do that," and killing yourself the other way around. Start with $1,000 product. What's funny is at one of the last events ... Actually, I'm sorry, not one of the last, the last Funnel Hacking Live Event, beforehand ... I think it's okay if I tell you this. Beforehand, Russell was trying to figure out something he could sell at the Funnel Hacking Live Event. What's fun for me is to sit back and watch ... You know when you're so good at something, you don't realize you're that good at it? I think that happens a lot for Russell and it's understandable why it would because he's been doing it for so long. It's fun with my fresh eyes to sit back on the side and be like, "Oh, my gosh, what a cool process you're going through." You know what I mean? Anyways, he's preparing for the event. He's putting together different presentations and he's about to put together a presentation and here's how he starts it. "Gosh, I just wish I had something I could see for like $3,500." That's how he started it. Guess what came from that? The Fill Your Funnel Program. It's okay to start with the dollar amount. I know it must feel like I'm all over the place right now, but the only reason I'm hitting this really hard is because there's been several people who reach out saying, "Where do is start, Stephen, where do I start," right? I've had tons of people come ... I don't know why, but definitely in the last month, there's been a lot of people that ask that, "Where do I start?" What I would tell you to do is to start by figuring out how you can charge $1,000 for something, turn it into a webinar or an invisible funnel or black box funnel. Then what I would do is I would move to high, high ticket, right, because there's going to be a percentage of the people that buy my dad's $1,000 product who want more one-on-one coaching, right. I would not put yourself in the fulfillment or inside of the offer of the $1,000 product. Rather make them pay you more to work with you more. Does that make sense? I would start with this $1,000 product in the middle and then I would go put you into this implementation and coaching area where it's done-for-you services, but it's more high ticket, like 5, maybe 10% of the people who buy your $1,000 product are going to be interested in that kind of thing. That's great. You're only going to sell one or two of them to really make a huge difference. You know what I mean? A really easy way to do that. You guys see what I'm saying? Should I trial close you? Are you guys getting this? Are you guys seeing this could work for your business? What would your spouse say when this actually works for you? Can you imagine what it's going to be like when you walk out and you've made that kind of money? You imagine when it's automated? Should I keep trial closing you guys? That's true though. Does that make sense? Then what happens is then we go out and we start going on tripwire funnels and we start going for breakeven funnels and we start to ... When you do it the other way around, you're totally guessing. It's so much harder to make a tripwire funnel breakeven if you do it the other way around. Instead, do it the other way where you start at the top or in the middle, right, and make the tripwire funnel last or last-ish. People will tell you what they want so then just go make that and the chance of success is so much greater. It is so much less risky to do it that way. It's pretty funny when I sat back and realized what was going on with that and that's the way we do it that it just blew me away because I remember the first funnel that I built, it was low ticket continuity. That's the hardest category I can even think of to sell ever. Continuity stuff in the front, that's wicked hard. That was crazy. It's more challenging as a category usually to sell continuity, especially low ticket, anyway, upfront. Anyway, so it just reminded me of all these different funnels that I put together and I think part of the reason why they would fail and stuff like that. What's funny is I have really low ticket free plus shipping funnels right now. I have also ... You know what's funny? It is just as much work for me to sell the mid-range stuff than it is for me to sell the low ticket stuff. The support tickets that come in are almost the exact same. It's so funny. When I actually go out and start selling $1,000 stuff, it's easier for me to do that than it is the lower ticket thing. For whatever reason, it brings in a higher level customer. It brings in somebody who's in a different position in their life, someone who I want to work with. Anyways, I don't know how to sell you on this. When I was thinking about my dad's webinar, when I was thinking about all the stuff going on, and those of you who are trying to make this business succeed, I'm not trying to tell you to abandon everything if you already have a funnel, a tripwire funnel on the front end. What I am trying to tell you to do is charge more money, just charge more money. Then what you do is have some person in the back end after someone buys your mid range product, your $1,000, $2,000 product, have somebody calling them up in the back end saying, "Hey, you want to work with Grant Larsen for 15,000 or whatever? He'll give you one-on-one coaching for six months," or something like that. You know what I mean? You only close two of those a month, that is seriously massive revenue boosters right there. Anyway, guys, I hope that what I'm trying to say is coming across clearly because the type of question that I've been getting recently, which by the way, I've been loving the questions. I hope you like the mass Q&A sessions I just did, the last two podcast episodes. Those were a lot of fun. As a by product of that, people have been asking more and more questions. It's been a whole lot of fun. Really, really enjoy that. Usually, the type of question is like, "Hey, where do I start?" I'm trying to tell you please for the love, from a guy who did it for years at the low ticket price thinking that he was serving better or thinking that he was making it more affordable, but in reality causing a harder headache and I actually had to sell it harder sometimes. It's not fun. I'm telling you, please start with something that's at least $1,000... I'm saying that over and over and over again because it doesn't take many of them to really change your life. It does not take many of them to have seed cash for your next ad campaign. It doesn't take many of them to really start figuring out also what people want in the next tripwire funnel. Start with something high ticket. It's so funny. There was a few people I was coaching this last week and they're like ... I kept telling them $1,000 price point, they're like, "Awesome. I'm selling for 497." I said, "Why? I keep telling you," and it came down to it ... Now if you have a legitimate reason like sometimes there's a legitimate reason and that's fine, but most of the time, there isn't one. You literally are just afraid to charge more money and I'm begging you not to do that... I'm begging you to get out and actually say, "You know what, I'm going to charge $1,000. I'm going to figure out how I can charge $1,000. I'm going to figure out how to sell at that price point," and when that becomes your focus, oh, man, it's so rewarding when $1,000 comes in. It's like, "Whoa." Just emotionally, it's so nice. Holy crap. How many of those does it take to actually cover the mortgage or rent? Not many. You know what I mean? I guess it depends where you live, but still even then, not many. That could fit a really wide range of households, but I guess it's on my mind because we're in a house now. Anyways, guys, hopefully that helps. Super excited for this week and what's going on here and I appreciate you all like crazy. Just gosh, I just love our community. It's so, so, so fun. I remember I was posting different pictures, what we were doing and things like that and just the engagement, I just really, really enjoyed it and I really appreciate all you guys are doing.
