Today's 'GRDC in Conversation' podcast interview is with Chris Preston. In the 1980s Chris spent three years studying biofuels in the USA before returning to Australia to work in weed research at The University of Adelaide. Thirty years later, Chris is still on the job tackling the ever-evolving problem of understanding and managing herbicide resistant weeds. A challenge that has seen him explore the problem from different angles, but always with an ear close to the ground listening to what farmers and advisors have to say to guide him and his research team. GRDC in Conversation is a limited series of the GRDC Podcast. It features in depth, long-form interviews with growers and other experts in the grains industry. It aims to help growers explore research outcomes and ideas through a different perspective. Interviewer Oli Le Lievre – presenter of Humans of Agriculture – weaves a story not just about the technical innovations but the expertise, history and personal background, influences and motivation of each guest.

A few decades have passed since the era of fun good-time music ruled radio, the stages, and MTV. However, the impact of the bands during that time still remains. Groups like Van Halen, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, & Bon Jovi sold millions of records and to this day have one of the most loyal fan bases ever in music history. Yet a few years into the early '90s it all came to a screeching halt and only over the past decade have we seen a renewed appreciation of the music from this era. Why did it all end? Chris Preston from My Rock 'n' Roll Heaven and I discuss the major components of its downfall. Please enjoy the episode.

This time Chris & Preston from LOCASH joined the DORK-cast! We talk Dorky beginnings in Baltimore and Kokomo, IN respectively. How Chris had an unfortunate "Bam-Bam" Flinstones acting debut. The time Preston "Dork'd" out meeting Dr. J. Chris' weird handshake and "Hey Derek! Remember me from the Starbucks?" encounter with Derek Jeter. How they snuck into a college dorm and the really bad choice of song the picked to impress the ladies. Oh yeah, and a lot of laughing during this taping of DORK!
Our new free course is here! In this podcast, you'll hear from your co-hosts Jessica Strauss and Peter Newman, who are joined by course presenters, Dr Chris Preston and Mark Congreve. WeedSmart Content Creator Cindy Benjamin also provides an update on what's new on the WeedSmart website. Pre-emergent Herbicides 101 will take you through the in’s and out’s of pre-emergent herbicides. The course is taught by Dr Chris Preston (Uni of Adelaide) and Mr Mark Congreve (ICAN)and the course covers why pre-emergent herbicides are an important tool in Australian cropping systems and how pre-emergents help you to manage herbicide resistance in crop weeds. (Especially in a world where 11 of the 17 modes of action have documented resistance.) If you're an agronomist and you'd like to deepen your understanding of how pre-emergent herbicides work (in both winter and summer cropping systems), this is the course for you! You can register for the course (for free!) here: http://www.diversityera.com/courses/pre-emergent-herbicides-101 Mark Congreve also chatted about workshops he's running on effective use of pre-ems. By definition, Accounts Payable (AP) automation is the initiative of digitally streamlining the accounts payable process in the most efficient way possible. Though AP Automation isn't necessarily a new topic of discussion, many organizations actually know very little about its dynamics and the benefits of transforming their accounts payable process. Organizations are especially unaware of the importance of properly integrating AP Automation into their Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP). What do you do when you receive an invoice in your email inbox? Though most invoices are generated and exchanged electronically, many organizations still print them out to begin the process. Though optical character recognition (OCR) in the digital AP process is accurate roughly 80% of the time, many invoices require unique editing in some aspect before fully processing. Unique editing to an invoice could be triggered by numerous causes, such as a failure in the invoice line pairing, or that a PO based invoice does not have the PO number on it. However, what if the OCR is 100% accurate, and the digital invoice processing still falls through? The solution lies within properly integrating AP Automation into your ERP system. In this episode, hosts Miraj and Patrick sit down with Inspyrus Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer, Chris Preston to discuss the full scope of AP Automation in ERP systems.
Chris Preston from Powerboards reasons why it is okay to 'cheat' out in the surf. The topic is somewhat divisive but like or not, motorised surfboards are here to stay and when it comes to powered watercraft, this guy has managed to make them work for a prolonged course of time when numerous others have come and gone with regular occurrence. We find out how, along with why a little artificial enhancement is not such a bad thing.Notes and links at https://smorgasboarder.com.au/ep8-chris-preston-motorised-surfboards/
Serious herbicide resistance news has come out of South Australia, with a population of ryegrass from the Eyre Peninsula, having been confirmed resistant to all of the pre-emergent herbicides – Avadex, Arcade, Trifluralin, Propyzamide and Sakura, as well as two lesser-known herbicides EPTC and Thiobencarb. It was sampled in 2014 just two years after the release of Sakura in Australia. Metabolic cross-resistance is at play here. The really serious news is that a random survey in the South East of South Australia found many more populations of ryegrass with multiple cross-resistance to a range of pre-emergent herbicides, and the perplexing thing is that there is no predictable cross-resistance pattern. This is the research by the team of Chris Preston, Peter Boutsalis, David Brunton and Gurgeet Gill from the University of Adelaide with GRDC investment and we speak with Chris Preston about the findings and what they mean. If you'd like to learn more about the technical side of this finding, you can read AHRI insight here: https://ahri.uwa.edu.au/alphabet-cross-resistance-in-south-australia/ In positive news, we learn about Truflex Canola technology which is being released by Monsanto in 2019. TruFlex canola is Monsanto’s second-generation weed control trait offering growers greater flexibility through an extended glyphosate application window up to first flower and an opportunity to apply Roundup Ready® Herbicide with PLANTSHIELD® by Monsanto at higher rates for enhanced weed control. AHRI Director Hugh Beckie explains how the technology works and WA Grower Chad Eva gives his perspective on how it will fit into his farming system. If you'd like to learn more about this technology in person, you can head along to a field day near you: http://www.roundupreadycanola.com.au/truflex-canola/#RegisterHere Finally, we catch up with WeedSmart Content Writer and Producer to learn about who she is and get an update on what's new on the WeedSmart website. With seeding and pre-emergent herbicide application kicking off around the country, we got in touch a couple of herbicide application experts to share some timely advice on getting spraying right this season. Dr Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide gives a preview of his WeedSmart Webinar "Use pre-ems to maximise winter crops in the South", sharing valuable insights into management strategies around pre-em application and also gives us an update on the resistance levels to pre-ems. DeltaAg Agronomist and Consultant Heidi Gooden, who is based in Lockhart, runs us through the current dry spell conditions being experienced in the Southern Cropping Region and what impact this has on pre-em herbicide application. She also provides insights into knocking down lingering Summer weeds and more. As mentioned earlier, our first Webinar Series for 2018 is next week and features Mark Congreve from ICAN and Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide. Both experts will be joined by AHRI’s Peter Newman and will be discussing pre-emergent herbicide tactics in the North and South, respectively. In this week's episode, we feature distiller Braeden Bumpers of McClintock Distilling Company, based in Frederick MD. Braeden and I recorded this episode during the summer, right before I left for the Tales of the Cocktail conference in New Orleans, and the audio file needed a little bit of TLC due to the heat and humidity, the large, echoey distillery, and some background noise problems. So, big shout-out to Chris Preston, our favorite DC Sound Mixer, for spending some time with this audio and taking care of some of the interference. And as you listen to Braeden and I chat about distilling, I want you to imagine we’re sitting in their beautiful distillery next to their gorgeous column stills, and if you’re curious about what that space looks like, you can go ahead and check out the pictures in the show notes at modernbarcart.com. Some of the topics we discuss in this episode include: Of course, the art and science of distillation What a drunken pig might taste like The differences between craft spirits and larger corporations What costs determine the retail price of your favorite whiskey or gin The value of drinking your mistakes What cocktail Mark Twain would drink on a Mississippi paddle boat And much, much more Braeden and McClintock Distilling Company are one of the reasons why Frederick is one of my favorite spots to visit in Maryland, whether on business or pleasure, and I’m sure you’ll understand why after listening to our conversation.
On this episode, I talk with Chris Preston of @SuccessDairies. He's one of the best Social Media Influencers on Instagram. Growing to 500k followers! He talks strategy and GIVES REAL TIPS on growing!
Dr Chris Preston chats to us about correct pre-emergent herbicide use and Colin McMaster discusses how treating Summer weeds while they're small has benefits for your back pocket, by ensuring nitrogen and soil moisture is kept available for your crops! Music: bensounds.com
