We present this field interview with Mireya Katrina Tsironis Genius made with Carrie Kline in April of 2025. Now in her early thirties, Mireya Genius is an organic vegetable farm manager in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts. She traces her involvement in agriculture to her childhood on the Isle of Crete where her parents had settled in a small traditional village with plenty of room for vegetable farming, which soon captivated her with its possibilities. She learned to raise chickens from an elderly half-blind woman, and became watchful of older people. Her pursuit of farming eventually brought her in conflict with old Greek male farmers who found her youthful enthusiasm annoying and her interest in driving a tractor out of the question. So she finished up her studies and looked to settle in other parts of the world before landing in western Massachusetts eight years ago to make a start in commercial farming. Mireya Genius came because here she can more fully express herself. She enjoys working in a group—it makes the time pass—and she was learning new farming practices from fellow workers. “People here in the fields were speaking Spanish,” she recalled.” They called themselves ‘Hispanics' and knew the ropes. I learned fast. I was white and bi-lingual (Spanish) and assumed to have good leadership skills. So I progressed in my employment goals, even learned to drive a tractor! ‘Here,' they said. Go ahead.' No discrimination.” Yet she found people in Massachusetts slow to accept her socially and suffered acute loneliness for a time, often crying in asparagus fields, wondering what she was doing here. She fell in love with the workers she was soon supervising and came to find out the divide she was feeling was widespread. She decided to try to bridge the gaps dogging her work, for instance, that United Statesians in general don't bother to learn about other people. “They just like to get things like coffee cheap, without knowing how it is produced, or the people who produce it. The same with nameless migrants working in the hot summer sun to grow the vegetables we eat. We don't even know their names, living situations, social needs, or the threats of deportation that presently haunt them, whether or not they are legally in our valley. Many of them come for medical reasons. They like the quality of farming life.”

Are you willing to endure any trial God has chosen for you to pass through, in order to grow upwards spiritually in heart knowledge and kinship with Christ and His sufferings? Will you allow Him to choose which kind of "dish" He will design you to be, so you may bring glory and honor to His name, by feeding His lambs and sheep truth and sustenance needed for their own spiritual growth? Live in such a way as to not grieve the Holy Spirit. Be a good soldier for Christ and be ready at all times to obey His command. God is the Farm Manager and knows what He is doing. About This EpisodeJoin us for a very special episode with three incredible guests, Elisa Arias, Kate Knight and Jeff Hamaoui, who exemplify the transformative power of regenerative living and how it fosters thriving communities and a healthier planet. Farm manager Elisa delves into the importance of being present, and she embodies the concept of living in reciprocity with the Earth. Kate's transformative approach to urban gardens turns small spaces into sustainable oases that can have a substantial impact on the environment, the community, and your personal well-being. And as the co-founder of the Modern Elder Academy Jeff brings wisdom from his firsthand experience in developing a regenerative community in Baja. The discussion underscores that meaningful environmental contributions don't require grand gestures but can start with small, localized efforts such as welcoming more people to our table, nurturing our gardens, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere within our neighborhoods. They each remind us that the journey to a sustainable future is a collective endeavor that begins with individual acts of kindness, awareness, and a commitment to a holistic approach to life. About The GuestsElisa Allen Arias is the Farm Manager of Baja Sage Farm in El Pescadero, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Elisa also acts as a farmer-collaborator with a statewide non-profit, the Alianza para la Seguridad Alimentaria (ASA), and the International Community Foundation (ICF) as part of a cooperative effort to improve the regional food system. Her background combines formal education and lived experience in biology, agriculture, food systems, teaching, wellness, and entrepreneurship.  Kate Knight is an executive consultant and a serial entrepreneur. She has repeatedly grown businesses from concept to hundreds of millions in revenue, and uses her expertise to support founders and executive teams scaling their work in the world, safely. Spring is here - which means farmers across the country are about to open the doors to customers for the 2024 season. Today on Raising the Barn, Bailey Edwards, Farm Manager at Cherry Place Farm in Rock Hill, SC joins the podcast to talk about how she's preparing for the opening day at the farm and what should be on every farmer's marketing check-list before welcoming their first customers of the season.  Some of the questions we chat about: In the most recent US Census of Agriculture, the average age of the American farmer is 57.5 years old and Young Farmers under 35 only make up 9% of the farming population. Did she always know that she wanted to continue her family's legacy? At what point did she make the decision to come back to Cherry Place Farm after college? While some farms operate year-round and other farms operate seasonally – in a place like South Carolina, the “season” is fairly long. Cherry Place Farms is open from ~mid-April right up to Christmas. Aside from the obvious farm tasks - planning, prepping, and planting, from the business perspective, what does planning for the next year look like? Given her background in PR - what advice does she have for farmers when it comes to working with local media or other businesses to promote their business?  Did she leverage any new marketing techniques to drive business for the new Cherry Place Farm offerings in 2023 (Farm Yoga, U-Pick Flowers, Cut Flowers, Greenhouse with “pot up your own hanging baskets” and wreath making at Christmas)? Looking back on 2023 - is there anything that she would have done differently when it comes to marketing the farm?  What is her favorite TikTok or Instagram trend at the moment? How is she using social media to drive customers and serve her local community?  Does she have a favorite campaign or aspect to her business that she's worked on?  What's on the Cherry Place Farm Marketing Plan for 2024?

Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

As a new King is crowned, Vernon Harwood looks at the role Charles III has played in shaping and supporting farming in the UK. From his first major speech on the environment as a young Prince of Wales in 1970, to his unconventional and often criticised organic farming methods in the 1980s, he continues to be concerned about the future for upland farmers and the profitability of small family businesses. We hear insights from the King's former Farm Manager in Gloucestershire, the Cumberland Bed-and-Breakfast owners who formed a lasting friendship with the monarch and the fifth-generation Exmoor farmer who sees first-hand the impact the Prince's Countryside Fund has on isolated communities. For decades Charles was a passionate and sometimes forthright voice supporting everything from traditional country crafts to Britain's native farm breeds. But with new responsibilities as sovereign, what now for the man dubbed ‘Britain's most famous farmer'? In this podcast I interview two pioneers in making food healthy, from the soil up. Bob Quinn is a botanist with a PhD in plant biochemistry, who helped convert thousands of acres across Montana to growing ancient grains (Kamut) organically. He was the first in Montana to mill whole grain, organic flour starting in 1986.  By 1991 he had certified his entire 3 generation family wheat and cattle ranch as organic.  He continues to experiment to improve regenerative organic systems and find better ways to grow dry land vegetables, fruit trees and berries in Montana, not only rebuilding the soil, but also the farming community for the benefit of health for all. Tim Parton is a Farm Manager in South Staffordshire in the UK. Tim farms in a biological way maximizing the value of nutrition to get the best out of the crops. He does not use insecticides, seed treatments, growth regulators or fungicides, as when the plant is balanced the need for synthetic inputs drops away. Tim has won many awards including Soil Farmer of the Year 2017, Arable Innovator of the Year 2019, Sustainable Farmer of the Year 2019 and Innovation Farmer of the Year 2020. Together, we'll explore the journey between the soil and your health and why soil degeneration, and modern farming practices are partly responsible for declining mental and physical health. We will also explore the fundamental principles of regenerative farming and gardening. See more information on my website and nutrition and the environment. As the threats of climate change become more urgent than ever, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure about what to do. The problems — and their solutions — seem unwieldy and complicated. But what if we embrace the complexity of the climate crisis and create solutions that are just as intertwined as the issues? That's where intersectional environmentalism comes in. Leah Thomas, a prominent voice in the field and the activist who coined the term “Intersectional Environmentalism,” offered us a call to action in her new book. The Intersectional Environmentalist serves as a guide to instigating change for all and a pledge to work toward personal empowerment and the healing of the planet. Thomas examined the inextricable link between environmentalism, racism, and privilege, and argued that we cannot save the planet without uplifting the voices of its people –– especially those most often unheard. She shows how not only are Black, Indigenous, and people of color unequally and unfairly impacted by environmental injustices, but she argued that the fight for the planet goes hand in hand with the fight for civil rights — one cannot exist without the other. Solving these issues becomes clearer when we recognize these intersectionalities. Thomas wrote that her goal “is to raise awareness of unsung heroes, look beneath the surface, and reflect on missteps in social and environmental movements so that future movements can improve. With complete knowledge of our past, we have a better shot at improving the outcomes of our future.” The effects of climate change are intensifying, but so are the voices of those who are creating meaningful solutions. Intersectional environmental activists like Thomas acknowledge where we came from and how to move forward, helping us push past the overwhelm and into meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable change. Leah Thomas is an intersectional environmental activist and eco-communicator based in Southern California. She's passionate about advocating for and exploring the relationship between social justice and environmentalism and was the first to define the term “Intersectional Environmentalism.” She is the founder of @greengirlleah and The Intersectional Environmentalist Platform. Her articles on this topic have appeared in Vogue, Elle, The Good Trade, and Youth to the People and she has been featured in Harper's Bazaar, W Magazine, Domino, GOOP, Fashionista, BuzzFeed, and numerous podcasts. She has a B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from Chapman University and worked for the National Park Service and Patagonia headquarters before pursuing activism full time. She lives in Carpinteria, California. Hannah Wilson (they/them) is currently a Farm Manager at Yes Farm with the Black Farmers Collective and co-chair of the Environmental Justice Committee for the City of Seattle. In 2019, they graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Environmental Science and Resource Management and a minor in Geography. As a queer, disabled, deaf, and Black non-binary person, their intersectional identity informs the way they walk through the world and the work they do. They have committed their life's work centered around food sovereignty and Black liberation, continuing to organize around community building, growing food, healing, and our relationships to the land and each other. Click here to be matched with an expert consultant or mentor for your regenerative farm journey! Agriculture around the world is at a critical moment. We find ourselves between simultaneous crises in which the long term effects of the pandemic continue to shine a light on the instability of our global food system, all while the war in Ukraine is resulting in a shortage of grain and synthetic fertilizers. The full effects of these scenarios are still a long way from being felt, but I can tell you that the dramatic rise in cost for these commodities is already throwing many farm operations into a panic. Many growers are now faced with excruciating choices to make on whether they try and force every square meter of their land to produce at a maximum in order to justify the steep prices of inputs, all while the weather continues to throw curveballs and threaten the viability of their crops, or take a risk on overhauling their land management models and make a dramatic shift to low or zero fertilizer farming that their ecosystem may not be prepared for.  At the center of this are annual crop producers, mostly the growers of wheat, corn, soy, and other cereal and legume crops that make up the majority of cultivated land around the world. For decades now they've been lobbied and incentivised to increase their fertilizer and chemical inputs to produce ever more quantities on their land by both the agro chemical suppliers and the government subsidy systems that have promoted a “get big or get out” model of payouts. This has resulted in unprecedented biodiversity and topsoil loss in a race for higher yields that have eroded both the land and the viability of small to medium sized farms around the world.  As dire as this scenario sounds, there are viable options and processes that have been tested and proven in many different contexts to wean your cropping operation off of these inputs and to step of the treadmill of extractive production by revitalizing the life in the soil and reducing or eliminating the chemical inputs and machinery intensive management of these staple crops.  I'm keenly aware from my conversations with growers around Europe and other places that this is a vast and controversial topic, but to get us started I reached out to Timothy Parton, to break down the process that he went through to wean the farms that he manages off of chemical inputs and the reality of what that transition process has looked like. Tim is a Farm Manager from South Staffordshire in the UK, farming 300 ha of arable land who has pioneered no-till management in his area by focusing on promoting biology as much as possible to replace chemical inputs. He attests to using bacteria to fix nitrogen, release phosphorus, and fight off disease. He has massively reduced the use of Glyphosate where possible, using rolling/crimping to terminate cover crops, and he hasn't used insecticides for the last 5 years, all while working to improve soil carbon content through rotation and cover cropping, also using companion cropping where possible. These efforts have earned him accolades including being named arable Innovator of the Year by British Farming Awards and receiving the Farm Innovator of the Year award from Farmers Weekly. This episode is a bit different from others that will be coming out in this series in that it comes from a live skill exchange call that I hosted from late last year, and the last half of the recording goes into the Q&A portion from farmers in our network.  In this episode Tim and I discuss a wide range of essential aspects around the topic of regenerative transitions for arable crop operations. We start by looking into Tim's own transition and the mindset shift that made the concepts and practices “click.” From there we go into the options available for weaning off of chemical inputs and how to make decisions that are right for the unique context of your land and farm business.
