This is a story of impossible healing. One of the biggest blessings I have in my life is getting to meet and work with inspiring people doing big time miracles in their lives with plant medicines. In the last year, I have had the immense pleasure of getting to know and work with my soul brother Andrew Fletcher. On the surface, Andrew's life was going great. He was a practicing doctor and lawyer. He had a beautiful wife, spacious home, and plenty of money. But inside he was battling a deep lack of worthiness that no amount of success or achievement could solve. The only heartfelt emotion he had the capacity to experience was anger. Soon after he graduated from law school, he began to have muscle twitching in his hands that eventually progressed to his legs. He went to see a neurologist and was eventually diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is defined as "a fatal neurological disorder that causes the gradual deterioration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord." After a four year battle for his life inside the traditional medical system, he began to look deeper within and seek out holistic healing, spirituality, and plant medicine. His relationship with the ALS began to change from one of war, to one of radical acceptance. In this week's episode, hear in depth about Andrew's impossible healing journey into mindbody medicine, psychedelics, integration, and how he stopped the ALS in its tracks and is no longer seeing progression of this illness. (And no longer identifies as having it at all.) Anthem 52

Welcome to Anthem 16 in my attempt to write a new choir anthem every week for a year. I'm Kevin Mulryne and I hope you will enjoy listening to my progress throughout 2024. Please do visit the website Anthem52.com, follow along on x.com - @realanthem52 or Instagram - @realanthem52 and send me a message to show@anthem52.com. It was a difficult week. There was a lot going on at work and as a result I was very tired which, as previously noted, makes composing rather difficult. Despite this, I did manage to write a complete anthem even though there were more than the usual number of stops and starts in the process. Several avenues were deleted and I'm not sure about how it ended up. It's never a good idea to review things when you aren't feeling up to it and I shouldn't have looked back through the recordings of all my anthems so far last night, while I was in a low state due to tiredness. I left myself feeling that none of the pieces so far were of any worth and the expected progress hadn't happened. I'm in a bit of more positive mood today but I'm going to leave the older anthems alone for the moment and come back much later on to see how I think I have improved - or not improved... Back to this week's anthem, however. I may have mentioned right back in the introduction to this podcast that April is a big month for Stratford-upon-Avon, where I live. Shakespeare's Birthday is on 23rd of the month and the traditional celebrations take place on the weekend closest to the date. As begun by students and staff almost 200 years ago, a procession starts from King Edward VI Grammar School (among former pupils are William Shakespeare, me and my son) and ends with the laying of flowers at Shakespeare's grave in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church (where my daughter and I are members of the choir and my wife and son are former members). When I first arrived in Stratford in 1977, representatives of a large number of countries attended to unfurl their national flags on flagpoles around the centre of the town and it was a grand affair. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) the political difficulties and the cost of inviting ambassadors and others has become prohibitive. The festivities are still great fun and remarkable for somewhere as small as Stratford. Several aspects of the celebrations remain the same including the Shakespeare Service at Holy Trinity Church and its Shakespeare Sermon, usually given by a clergy person with an interest in or a connection to Shakespeare studies and sometimes by an academic like my late father who was Professor of English at Warwick University and a member of the Holy Trinity congregation. An innovation for that service began a relatively short time after I joined the choir in 1979 - the (almost) annual commissioning of the appropriately-named Shakespeare Anthem. This is one of the activities undertaken by The Friends of the Music of Holy Trinity Church and has featured several famous composers over the decades including Andrew Fletcher, Arthur Wills, Guy Woolfenden, John Joubert, Francis Jackson, Philip Stopford and many others. This year, the anthem is by a female composer for the first time - Becky McGlade. No spoilers but I'm very much enjoying rehearsing her anthem and you can find out all about her on her website. With this time of year in Stratford whirling around my head, I decided to have a go at a Shakespeare Anthem of my own. I'll probably try another one next week as well. I didn't use an actual passage from Shakespeare, mainly because I couldn't find one, but during my web search, I chanced upon the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust collections website. The Trust has looked after Shakespeare's Birthplace in Stratford for many years as well as some other houses that belonged to his extended family. I worked at a house called Hall's Croft when I was a student and my wife worked at the world famous Anne Hathaway's Cottage. The Trust also looks after a wonderful collection of items connected to Shakespeare including a book of prayers. While it isn't a copy definitely used by William Shakespeare, it was published during his lifetime and is exactly the kind of prayer book that might have been in his library. So the prayer depicted above seemed like a good choice to set. Who knows, perhaps it was read aloud by William or one of his family? I took a little editorial licence with the old English spellings of the words in order to make it work in an anthem but it's mostly the same: Words for Anthem 16: I do commende and betake my life both body and soule, now and for ever. Unto thee, with the father and the holy Ghost, one God of most excellent majestie, be all prayre, honor, and thankesgiving, for ever and ever. Amen. There are only 2 sentences and a final amen but that wasn't my problem. It just didn't seem to flow. I ended up adding dots to quite a few of the notes because I thought that one of the issues was that the rhythm was very straight. I also went back and made the bass part lower in several places. Listening back today, I think the anthem is a little bit more attractive than I was expecting and, again, I'm wondering how much this had to do with my overall mood. Anyway, it starts in F major and switches to G major shortly afterwards. Later it makes its way back to F major and I went for contrast in movement rather than key signature or feel in a central section that features a lot of quavers (8th notes). The texture here is much more complex and I think it does shift the anthem to a different gear. The end returns to something more like the original feel with a very loud and positive ending. I completely forgot to add an amen section but never mind. You might be able to hear some of the aspects I tried to fix during the week but you may not.

Grace is not self effort, grace is not self improvement, grace is not self esteem in fact grace is not self anything, it is soemthing that is a free gift that is given by God. There are consequences to our actions, there's a link between what we do and what happens afterwards and there are consequences to the sin that we do and the bad decisions we make even if we are forgiven. The aim of the consequences of forgiven sin is not to settle the accounts demanded by retributed justice but to show the evil of sin and that God does not take sin lightly. We must not equate forgiveness with the absence of painful impact, being forgiven does not remove the consequences of our actions.

It is one of the most important ideas that a Christian can ever wrestle with, it is basic to our whole understanding of God and Christianity and is so central to Biblical teaching that it is said of God "Holy is His Name" - Luke 1:49 His name is Holy because He is Holy but he is not always treated with holy reverence.

We all desire success in some way or another and usually the main reason most people want to be successful is to have a good and happy life, but when things don't work the way we want or perceive we often as believers think God where are you? God's idea of success and our cultures idea of success can often be far apart, and Gods will for our lives may be totally different for what we want for our lives. The more we know and understand the intrinsic glory, holiness and goodness of the God of the bible the less we will be disappointed by the god of our imagination the one we think He is.

As born-again believers we need to have a high view of the divine inspiration of scripture, as high as Jesus' view was. But our ultimate preoccupation should not be with the scripture itself but with the Christ to whom the scriptures point us to. Church history has always shown the same thing. Once the high view of scripture has been abandoned by any group, any denomination, any church the downhill slide of it's theology and practice into worldliness, compromise and error is inevitable.

“Let me make the songs of a nation,” the Scottish patriot Andrew Fletcher once declared, “and I care not who makes its laws.” The eminent political journalist Ronald Brownstein makes a similar case in his recent book Rock Me on the Water — 1974: The Year Los Angeles Transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics. Brownstein's narrative history traces the spectacular cultural pinnacles achieved in Los Angeles in 1974 in the separate industries of movies, music, and television — though often the artists responsible for those breakthroughs were working only blocks apart. These achievements helped Los Angeles in that year to exert “more influence over popular culture than any other city in America,” according to Brownstein, and indeed “the city dominated popular culture more than it ever had before, or would again.” Ultimately the breakthroughs that took place in LA in 1974 would not only transform the culture industries, they would act as a conduit channeling the radical ideas of the 1960s into the American mainstream. In this podcast interview, CNN senior political analyst and Atlantic senior editor Brownstein discusses the creative summits achieved in LA in 1974. In Hollywood, these included the release of “New Wave” masterpieces such as Chinatown, The Godfather Part II, and The Conversation, along with the filming of other notable works including Nashville and Jaws. On television, 1974 was the only year that CBS broadcast the Saturday night lineup often considered “the greatest night in television history,” which included such breakthrough series as All in the Family, MASH, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Bob Newhart Show. And in music, 1974 saw the release of career-defining albums from principal creators of the Southern California sound including Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The art across all these industries, according to Brownstein, “was socially engaged, grappling with all the changes and critiques of American life that had rumbled through society during the 1960s: greater suspicion of authority in business and government, more assertive roles for women, more tolerance of premarital sex, greater acceptance of racial and sexual minorities.” LA's culture industries in 1974 were at the forefront of the clash between an ascending Baby Boom generation bent on change and older generations opposing that change. In the short term, conservative politics triumphed. But Brownstein argues that the clear lesson for today's political-cultural clash of generations is that “while voices resistant to change may win delaying battles in politics, they cannot indefinitely hold back the future.”

In this week's record club, we pay tribute to Depeche Mode, and in particular the passing of founding member, keyboardist, and multi-talented musician Andrew Fletcher, whose contributions were as essential as they were often overlooked. In particular, we zero in on a record that represents the last hurrah of the band in their classic iteration, and as a chart-dominating force, the acrimonious, ugly, but brilliant Songs of Faith and Devotion. Join us to discover why this record is a great and essential piece of early 90s pop culture, and whether or not it's even better than Violator... For the fist time, Muslims in Blackburn will be able to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr at their local football ground. Blackburn Rovers will be hosting Eid prayers on their Ewood Park pitch. The town has a growing Muslim population and, as he tells our presenter William Crawley, the club's Integration and Development Manager Yasir Sufi hopes this new initiative will inspire a new generation of fans to be a part of the Rovers FC family. With food prices continuing to rise, we hear about the stark realities of providing for those in need, with Helen Carroll, Foodbank Manager for the multi-faith charity 'Spirit of Springburn' in Glasgow and Reverend Dean Roberts who runs the Parish Trust, an independent Christian charity in Caerphilly, South Wales. We also hear from the Bishop of Durham the Rt. Rev Paul Butler, Leader for the Lords Spiritual on Welfare Reform, who's calling for the Government to strengthen the social security system, to keep up with the true cost of living. Religious groups here and in Poland are frustrated by visa delays for Ukrainian refugees. Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg is one of many British Jews who's sponsored Ukrainian refugees only to find they've been stranded by bureaucracy. As Ripon Cathedral celebrates its 1350 year anniversary, reporter Andrew Fletcher explores the life of its founder, St Wilfrid, and discovers why he remains so relevant today. And we ask - are Science and Religion incompatible ? More than five thousand adults think so, according to a recent survey. So why does this perception persist ? William looks for answers with Dr Stephen Jones, Lecturer in Sociology of Science and Religion at the University of Birmingham. Producers: Jill Collins and Dan Tierney Editor: Helen Grady

This includes the music they listen to. Could the be an inherent danger, or even evil, found in certain songs or types of music? Could there be a danger and evil that is profoundly impacting our kids in a negative way? Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, and many other great thinkers throughout the world and down through history seem to think so. In fact, Scottish writer, patriot, and politician Andrew Fletcher is often quoted as having said, “let me make the songs of the nation and I care not who makes the laws.” Today let's discuss the rap, rock, and hip hop elephants in the room on License to Parent. Discussing the power of Music with G. Craige Lewis G. Craige Lewis has been ministering for over 30 years. He's been pastoring Adamant Believers Council in North Richland Hills, Texas for over a decade, promoting the message of Christ and fighting against the secularization of God's church. Lewis also leads an organization called EX Ministries, established to open the eyes of the body of Christ to the deceptions of the enemy. Although he is often called on to speak about the hip-hop sub-culture, he also shares great insight on the kingdom of God and God's people being aligned in preparation to reach the world and welcome the return of Christ. How does music infiltrate your brain without your consent? How can we as parents impact our child's music choices? Should we allow kids to listen to music because “we listened to stuff too?” Where are musical influences hiding today? How have they infiltrated our lives at ever turn? To those listening in the future, the level of excitement about our brief Easter hiatus to see friends and family might seem strange. But, future listener, these are strange times indeed. We don't even have hoverboards yet. Our future podcast friends might also find it strange that we're still discussing whether lawyers actually need artificial intelligence. Joe's guest this week is Andrew Fletcher, Director at TR Labs. He points out that the trust we place in our lawyers will soon begin to assume their ability to tap into a knowledge base far wider than can ever be gleaned from books. Lawyers will need AI and legal tech to tap into this information, interpret it and then join the dots on behalf of their clients. Andrew talks to Joe about how TR Labs is taking curation of big data to the next level, how to make sure an AI can be trusted, and the kinds of innovations that are just around the corner. Spoiler: there's still no sign of robot lawyers, but we do have a Joe-Bot. Find out more at tr.com/TheHearing

Andrew Fletcher was nice enough to drop by and talk about inclined bed therapy and how this simple and just about free bio hack can help you improve your health! What is inclined bed therapy? Inclined bed therapy is where you raise the head of your bed by 6 inches from the bottom of your bed. Inclined bed therapy means that your entire bed is tilted at an angle instead of just raising your head by folding the mattress. There are many mattresses that fold at the hips and will raise just one part of the bed either up or down. Inclined bed therapy means keeping your bed flat (from head to toe) but simply tilting the entire bed at an angle. What are the benefits of inclined bed therapy? There are many many amazing benefits. They are normalized blood pressure, increased circulation, feeling more rested and the fact that your blood pressure and circulation increases has a dramatic impact on many health conditions from depression to eye problems and much more. What I love about inclined bed therapy is that it doesn't take a lot of money (if any!) to simply modifiy your current sleeping arrangements. And it is a one time job. You invest 20 minutes to change your sleeping situation around and then you don't have to do anything more. It's a one time investment in your health that takes almost no money but the upsides are huge! If you're looking to improve your sleep you may want to take this short quiz and see what you're doing wrong and if you can change some things around. There are also other items you might want to consider if you're looking to improve your sleep. I have listed some of them in our store which you can check out by clicking here. I also shared some pretty strange and weird ways to improve your sleep in the video below. So that's about it. I hope you enjoyed this show about inclined bed therapy! If you did, please share it! Both Andrew and I would appreciate that a lot! And let me know if you experiment with inclined bed therapy in the comments below. I'd love to hear how it goes! One Last Thing!
