American hard rock/heavy metal band
POPULARITY
There's a quality to this song that I've only really experienced once before. It makes me homesick for a place I've never lived in. The other time this has happened to me was, coincidentally, also California. If any of you are Van Halen fans or even just rock n roll fans with an interest in the Pasadena scene in the 70s, you have to read the superb book Van Halen Rising. Easily the best rock biog I've ever read, written by an exceptional journalist and author and a wildly knowledgeable rock historian, Greg Renoff. Rather than being a gratuitous look at the excess of the hedonistic rock n roll lifestyle, Greg very deliberately builds a picture of Pasadena in the 70s in which the band was born and grew into the world famous act they became. Well, this song, in two minutes and thirty eight seconds leaves me with that strange sense of nostalgia and affection for a place that doesn't shape any part of my life. You almost get that sense of promise and opportunity that California held for the early settlers seeping through the words and music that Tom delivers. If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find it here:To listen to the song, go here: hhttps://youtu.be/nhnDaykQls8If you want to watch Jack's video for Room at the Top, you'll find it here : https://youtu.be/uF9hyogNurUAnd if you're interested in checking out Greg's book, you can find previews of it here : https://tinyurl.com/mr26nxzyDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Not only were VAN HALEN effectively “the Black Sabbath of shred” but they ultimately paved the way for the L.A. hair metal shred scene that exploded during the 80's. Not only is this episode an ALBUM DIVE into the first VAN HALEN album (by none other than the mighty VAN HALEN), but If you're into “reading books with your ears” then check out the audiobook “Van Halen Rising” as it provides some interesting insights into the origin story of the legendary band, including their rise to power, their earliest musical influences, and how Edward Van Halen's signature brand of two-handed tapping virtuosity forever revolutionized guitar playing in the late 70's and beyond. Remember, it's never too early for ice cream, even if it's “warm” and comes out of a “one eyed banana”. Go ahead and trim up that “Greek mythology bush”, get ready for the “super mix” and discover the sound of magic that was a game changer in the world of heavy metal when you JOIN US as we dive into the self-titled, debut album from the best backyard party band to come out of Pasadena: VAN HALEN. On the 2nd episode of our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, we welcome Van Halen superfan Greg Renoff to talk about the night he saw Van Halen on the 1984 Tour. This night would change Greg's life as he would go on to literally write the book on Van Halen with Van Halen Rising and his latest Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music. You can hear Greg's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge of Van Halen throughout our chat as we do our best to work the standard 20 questions we ask of every guest on FCM. The Wolf & Action Jackson anxiously awaited this episode as though they did eventually see Van Halen on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour together in 1991, what really turned them onto Van Halen as impressionable youths was seeing the boys on MTV in 1984. Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher were in heavy rotation on MTV that summer and the world had caught Van Halen fever. But we were too young to understand that you could see a band you saw on MTV on tour and had no idea how to go about getting to a concert (we were 10). However, a young Greg Renoff scored a ticket and got his mom to drop him off in the family truckster so he could witness Van Halen at the peak of their power on what is considered by most to be the best tour they ever did. It's another double dose, or maybe triple does, here on the Talkin' Rock podcast with Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons. First, I speak with "Van Halen Rising " author, Greg Renoff, about my last interview with David Lee Roth. That podcast stirred up lots of news when Dave made the statement that Van Halen is finished. Greg comments on that, Eddie Van Halen's health, his upcoming book about producer Ted Templeman and more on VH. Jeff Gutt and Eric Kretz of STP are up first. We talk about Jeff Playing in his hometown and his guest list. "Core" turned 27 years old this past weekend as Eric relives a few memories of it. One of the things I really wanted to know about was the new album, that's done and coming out next year. They both talk about it and how this album is different than other STP albums. You'll have to listen to hear what they say about it. Eric relays a hysterical Scott Weiland story, things they do on tour, where Eric has is awards displayed and more. Jay Buchanan from Rival Sons was nice enough to take some time out to speak with me. We talk about the bands constant touring and the rise in their popularity, his move to Tennessee, touring with legendary bands, Detroit music heavy-weights, what RS have going on in the future and more. Al Beck is back with Rock News. Gene Simmons' health issue, a classic MTV unplugged be re-released and the NHL teaming up with a rock band. Thank you for listening! 248-586-2988 for feedback. Allow a few seconds for buffering.Yahoo! player or right click HERE to download | Launch pop-up player Greg Renoff is not only a rabid Van Halen fan, but also a Ph. D. in history. Dissatisfied with the lack of information on Van Halen's earliest years, he put his degree to use studying not what happened to the lost colony at Roanoke Island (snore!), but how did Van Halen's years playing backyard parties prepare them to be the dominant hard rock group of the following decade? The result is Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Backyard Party Band Saved Heavy Metal. The book is deep with drama and detail, thanks to the over 230 interviews Renoff conducted with insiders such as longtime bassist Michael Anthony, producer Ted Templeman and even David Lee Roth's sister.Just a month after its release the book already tops Amazon sales charts for its categories, and has garnered positive reviews from top rock writer Chuck Klosterman and Rolling Stone. Now Greg Renoff talks to Art about his book, possibly the most detailed rock n' roll bio ever written. 59 minutes.Art's comments: "I mean to brag, but I've made a pilgrimage to the original Van Halen home, Pasadena City College and the Pasadena Civic. As exciting as it was, if I had had Van Halen Rising and had known the exact history that transpired on these sites, it would've been even better! After reading this book, I can just see David Lee Roth on the Van Halens' doorstep, preparing to knock and take his place in history."In any future VH1 Behind the Music about Van Halen, Greg Renoff will certainly be the talking head you'll see most. I had a great time chatting with him."
