Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.191 Christine Berry earned her Bachelors of Art in Art History from Baylor University and her Masters in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of North Texas. She began her career at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and continued on to the Whitney Museum of American Art. Twenty years ago, she shifted from the non-profit sector to the commercial art world. In 2013, Christine Berry and Martha Campbell founded Berry Campbell Gallery in Chelsea. The gallery has a fine-tuned program representing artists from Postwar American art, who have been overlooked due to age, race, gender, or geography. This unique perspective has been increasingly recognized by curators, collectors, and the press. Over the last ten years, Berry Campbell has doubled its roster, staff, and footprint. In 2022, the gallery moved from its original venue to its current 9,000 square foot gallery space at 524 West 26th Street. The gallery represents 34 artists and estates including Lynne Drexler, Perle Fine, Bernice Bing, Frederick Brown, Lilian Thomas Burwell, Nanette Carter, Beverly McIver, and Frank Wimberley. An artist who had briefly shown in the early 1960s in New York, she continued to work on a remote island in Maine until her death in 1999. Two decades later, she became the artist of the moment. Sukanya Rajaratnam and Christine Berry have collaborated on a dual-gallery show of Drexler's work from her first decade, 1959-1969, The shows at Berry Campbell and Mnuchin have drawn in new audiences and further burnished Drexler's reputation. In this podcast, Christie's Julian Ehrlich joins Berry and Rajaratnam to tell the story of Lynne Drexler's extraordinary year.

In this mini-series of the New Economics Podcast, we'll discover how our economy has been run over the past few years - and look at the key battlegrounds for those fighting to change the rules. Over the last few years, neoliberalism – the economic model that has dominated since Margaret Thatcher was PM – has taken a hit. Big spending and state intervention have been the name of the game, as the government scrambled to get to grips with the pandemic. While Boris Johnson gets ready to pack up his things, we still don't know who will be replacing him in Number 10. The two final contenders, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, have been described in the press as “channelling the blue-suited ghost of Thatcher”. So, have the last few years solidified a new kind of economic mainstream? Or will Johnsonism be swept aside once the new PM has unpacked their toothbrush? In the first episode of this special mini-series we're asking: has neoliberalism hit the buffers? Hello! This week we're looking at the huge cost of childcare, an often ignored part of the cost of living crisis. New research has found that almost two thirds of families are paying more, or the same, for their childcare as they do their rent or mortgage, with one in four parents saying they had to cut down on food, heat and clothing to afford childcare. To find out how this compares to other countries and discuss what can be done to help parents, we're talking to friend of the pod and researcher Christine Berry, Dr Kate Hardy from the University of Leeds, and Joeli Brearly, who founded the charity Pregnant Then Screwed.Plus, Ed's Make Your Own Sandwich shop gets a reinvention See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

'Neoliberalism', then. What the hell is it? Is it wrecking the planet? Is it responsible for Ol's hair? And what's it all got to do with the price of bees? Strap yourself in as mega-brain Christine Berry explains all. With the patience of a saint, Christine takes Dave and Ol through the basics. Yes, it's a real thing. No, it isn't the same thing as capitalism. And could they stop being such a pair of cretins, please? Sustainababble is your friendly environment podcast, out weekly. Why are university lecturers on strike?

Universities up and down the country have been shutting down as lecturers have walked out, arguing that the changes to their pension schemes could leave them thousands of pounds a year worse off in retirement. If you don’t know the difference between your defined benefits and your defined contributions, getting your head round the issues can feel like doing an economics PhD before you’ve done your 101. So this week we’re breaking down what the university strikes are all about, and what they tell us about everyone else’s pensions too. Ayeisha Thomas-Smith speaks to two striking lecturers: Nadine El-Enany, co-director of the Centre for Research on Race and Law at Birkbeck, and SOAS Senate chair Meera Sabaratnam. They are joined by writer and researcher Christine Berry, who is also a postgraduate student at Sheffield University. Enjoying the show? Tweet us your comments and questions @NEF! Produced by James Shield and Huw Jordan. Music: Podington Bear, licenced under Creative Commons.
