pablopablo - born Pablo Drexler - is a Madrid-based singer, songwriter, and producer. The son of two acclaimed artists, Jorge Drexler and Ana Laan, here he talks about how he found his own voice, sound, and artistic identity. His debut full-length album, Canciones en mi, is out now. The title is a bilingual play on words—“in E” (as in the musical key), and “in me”—and it perfectly captures the spirit of the record: introspective, expressive, and sonically bold. Pablo shares the story of growing up in a small town outside Madrid with a big, multilingual worldview. We discuss his early experiments in music and production, his years studying abroad, and his time touring and collaborating with artists like C. Tangana. He opens up about stepping away from the Drexler name—on the advice of his father—to make space for his music to be heard on its own terms. We dive deep into questions of identity, language, and legacy: Why does he now write exclusively in Spanish? What does it mean to create a sound that feels personal without being confessional? How do you balance the instinct to innovate with the desire to stay grounded? Along the way, we talk about the emotional clarity that comes with pressure, the power of building a sonic world, and the beauty of embracing simple ideas and making them feel new. At just 27, Pablo Pablo is already a Latin Grammy-winning artist, having contributed to major collaborations with Jorge Drexler, C. Tangana, and Nathy Peluso. But Canciones en mi is his proper introduction as a solo artist—and it's a striking one. This is a conversation about roots and branches, about staying true while branching out, and about what happens when you finally find the music that sounds like you. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com
Twenty years ago, “Al otro lado del río" became the first Spanish-language song to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Written by Jorge Drexler in a single day while staying in Madison, Wisconsin, and recorded in a mix of home and studio settings, the song's journey was as unexpected as its lyrics suggested. At the time, it felt like an anomaly. This year, when “El Mal” from Amelia Perez won the same award, it barely registered as unusual. That alone says something about how much can shift in 20 years—culturally, personally, globally. Here we revisit that historic night through conversations with Jorge Drexler, Ana Laan, Amanda Sidran, Ben Sidran, and the song's co-producer: me. From the song's humble origins, its Oscar nomination, and the moment when Drexler—barred from performing his own song during the ceremony—made a quiet but profound statement by singing his acceptance speech a cappella. But this episode isn't just about the song. It's about the river crossings—literal and metaphorical—that define our lives. It's about memory, and how we revise and re-tell our stories over time. It's about fate, timing, music, and how small decisions can ripple outward in ways we could never expect. It also looks at the aftermath: how the win transformed Drexler's career, leading to 15 Latin Grammys and three Song of the Year awards by 2024, and how it marked a turning point for me, prompting me to move to New York and ultimately leading to the creation of The Third Story podcast. But even in retelling the story, memory plays tricks—Jorge and I recall that night differently, highlighting a key theme of The Third Story: within every version of events, the truth always lies in the spaces between. This episode is an exploration of music, memory, and history—how a single event can reshape multiple lives in different ways. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com

An Australian app is setting out to help diners tired of battling background noise when they visit restaurants. The app allows users to search and review restaurants based on noise levels. Open-plan kitchens and sparse furnishing are the modern hallmarks of a trendy restaurant. However, some restauranteurs fail to consider the auditory implications of these design features. Diners tired of shouting across their starters now have a solution to the problem of overwhelming background noise. Audiologist Laura Drexler has designed “Ambient Menu,” an app that helps match restaurant-goers with venues that meet their hearing needs. Realizing that some potential restaurant-goers had stopped eating out altogether because of their sensitivity to noise, Drexler created an app that allows people to find and rate restaurants based on their auditory needs and preferences. “There are so many benefits of dining with other people, we get, you know, that endorphin rush, we get to engage, we get to be, you know, social human beings,” says Drexler. According to Drexler, research shows that too much noise in the background of a dining experience pushes customers to eat faster and to drink more alcohol. And it also changes our sense of taste in a negative way. “Once the background noise level gets to a certain level, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in, you have an increased heart rate, increased adrenaline, increased respiratory rate,” says Drexler. Stephen Morris, a retiree from Adelaide, says background noise has often had a negative impact on his dining experiences. “There's been times I've actually felt I'm being attacked by the noise, which, it's not a nice feeling,” explains Morris. “Regardless of what age you are, it would be nice to go out for a meal and not have to shout at each other to have a conversation.” Drexler is now hoping to be able to develop a smartphone version of her app and then hopes to offer the service across Australia next year. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

After 51 years, the Moab Police Department has finally solved the murder of Ann Woodward, a local barkeep who was killed at Woody's Tavern in 1973. For decades, law enforcement was stumped — who was the man that Ann beat at poker that night, the man sitting next to her smoking Camel cigarettes, the man with what one witness described as “devastating blue eyes?” Moab Police detective Jeremy Drexler finally has the answer. In this episode, we talk to Drexler about who the killer was and how, after all these years, he was able to piece together the story of what happened that night in 1973. The music in this episode was produced by Lobo Loco.

Escuchar audio

He tried to simulate a conversation to have the AI help him with some writing he was working on, and the AI simulacrum repeatedly insisted it was by Drexler. A somewhat well-known Haskell programmer - let's call her Alice - wrote two draft paragraphs of a blog post she wanted to write, began prompting the base model with it, and after about two iterations it generated a link to her draft blog post repo with her name. More generally, this is a cluster of capabilities that could be described as language models inferring a surprising amount about the data-generation process that produced its prompt, such as the identity, personality, intentions, or history of a user[1]. The reason I expect most capability evals people currently run on language models to miss out on most abilities like these is primarily that they're most naturally observed when dealing with much more open-ended contexts. For instance, continuing text as the user, predicting an assistant free to do things that could superficially look like hallucinations[2], and so on. Most evaluation mechanisms people use today involve testing the ability of fine-tuned[3] models to perform a broad array number of specified tasks in some specified contexts, with or without some scaffolding - a setting that doesn't lend itself very well toward the kind of contexts I describe above. A pretty reasonable question to ask at this point is why it matters at all whether we can detect these capabilities. A position one could have here is that there are capabilities much more salient to various takeover scenarios that are more useful to try and detect, such as the ability to phish people, hack into secure accounts, or fine-tune other models. From that perspective, evals trying to identify capabilities like these are just far less important. Another pretty reasonable position is that these particular instances of capabilities just don't seem very impressive, and are basically what you would expect out of language models. My response to the first would be that I think it's important to ask what we're actually trying to achieve with our model eval mechanisms. Broadly, I think there are two different (and very often overlapping) things we would want our capability evals[4] to be doing: Understanding whether or not a specific model is possessed of some dangerous capabilities, or prone to acting in a malicious way in some context. Giving us information to better forecast the capabilities of future models. In other words, constructing good scaling laws for our capability evals. I'm much more excited about the latter kind of capability evals, and most of my case here is directed at that. Specifically, I think that if you want to forecast what future models will be good at, then by default you're operating in a regime where you have to account for a bunch of different emergent capabilities that don't necessarily look identical to what you've already seen. Even if you really only care about a specific narrow band of capabilities that you expect to be very likely convergent to takeover scenarios - an expectation I don't really buy as something you can very safely assume because of the uncertainty and plurality of takeover scenarios - there is still more than one way in which you can accomplish some subtasks, some of which may only show up in more powerful models. As a concrete example, consider the task of phishing someone on the internet. One straightforward way to achieve this would be to figure out how...
This episode of the podcast kicks off a new feature called "Second Look", where we replay selected talks from past Ancestral Health Symposium conferences, that we think will interest you. This talk was presented by Todd Becker at the 2014 Ancestral Health Symposium meeting in Berkeley, California. The title is: "Myopia: A Modern Yet Reversible Disease" Myopia is also called near-sightedness. It's a refractive defect of the eye, where close up objects are in focus, but more distant objects appear blurred. Glasses or contacts are typically prescribed to correct this condition -- although in reality they don't actually correct the underlying problem. They are just a crutch that aids you in seeing more clearly. And often they just make the underlying problem worse, so stronger lenses are needed.Todd wore glasses for my his myopia, starting in high school, and over time the eye doctor kept increasing strength of the prescription... until he discovered how to get rid of them in his forties. The first part of talk is about about the increasing incidence and causes of myopia, including the underlying biology of how the eye becomes myopic by increasing in axial length, due to environmental factors such as poor vision hygiene -- spending too much time reading and looking at screens up close. The second half of the talk builds on this biological understanding to reverse the process, describing in detail how to use an active focusing technique to reverse myopia and restore normal vision. The method was adapted from research and practices used by others. Todd first wrote about his success and the active focusing approach in 2010, on the blog, GettingStronger.org It's one of many applications of a general biological principle known as hormesis - the judicious application of controlled low-dose stress to make the body and metabolism more resilient in different ways. The talk also indicates how the same principles can be used to reverse hyperopia, or far-sightedness, where one has trouble focusing on fine print or objects up close. Something that many people encounter as they get older. This talk on Myopia Reversal remains the single most popular recorded talk on our Ancestral Health Society YouTube channel, with well over a million views and 4000 comments. The comments fall into three main categories:* A small number are from skeptics who don't believe it is biologically possible to reverse myopia.* A larger number are from viewers who applied the technique with success, and either reduced their glasses prescription or got rid of their glasses or contact lenses for good.* And there is another group with questions from those interested in trying the technique but are unsure about certain details. For thesse people, there is an FAQ post on my blog that answers many of those commonly asked questions. As I launch a new series where I talk to people about their favorite teams ever, I start with my own, the mid-'90s Houston Rockets! Houston native and diehard sports fan KP joins me as we go through everything that led up to those Rockets' teams capturing back-to-back NBA titles! We start in the ‘70s and ‘80s when a young KP first became a Rockets fan himself! KP talks about the difficulty of even watching the NBA on TV, the underappreciated greatness of Moses Malone, and the drafting of Ralph Sampson. Which current NBA player reminds KP of Ralph? We move on to the Rockets winning a coinflip to draft Hakeem and forming possibly the greatest big man 1-2 punch in the history of the game only to see a potential dynasty derailed by injuries and cocaine! How did a team that upset the Showtime Lakers to face the Celtics in the NBA Finals find itself floundering in NBA purgatory for YEARS? Then, a familiar face returns as the Rockets build out a roster fit for a contender! How did a new system and young players help Hakeem cement himself as the best player in the league? Also, the road from Choke City to Clutch City and a rematch of the 1984 NCAA Finals with a special guest appearance from OJ Simpson. Getting on top is hard, but staying there is even harder. We talk about the challenges facing Houston as they tried to repeat as NBA champions and how those struggles led to trading for Houston's own Clyde Drexler. Also, a Dream Finals run that featured a Kiss of Death, an MVP showdown with David Robinson, and a young, svelte Shaq! We finish up with how the dynasty ended, Hakeem Olajuwon's place in history, and the cold reality of being a sports fan! We also talk about missed free throws, the importance of role players, and fighting sleep! Tap in and hit me up if you want to talk about your favorite team ever!
