Welcome to News You Need to Know with Shawn Bolz! Merry Christmas! Red One is a big budget Christmas action film with an array of stars to make it shine; it is also a mindless hunk of studio schlock. In it, Santa Claus has been kidnapped by a malevolent holiday witch. It is up to the Rock's Callum Drift (yes, that is his name) to get him back in time for the big day. What follows is a paint-by-numbers blockbuster that is crammed with enough CGI and bad one-liners to rip the seams of even the largest stocking. This thing is a jingle bell mess from start to finish. Hence why it sits at 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and was given a lump of coal at the box office. Red One couldn't even muster enough holiday cheer to break even with its asinine $250 million budget. Now, sit back, get into the spirit with a glass of Evan Williams' Bourbon-infused Eggnog, and rip off some snowmen noses! "Ho-Ho-Ho, Mofos!" The Holiday Favorites line up is going into week three and we've got another great show for you this week as we're tackling another criminally underrated Christmas film. This week we are joining Henrique and David in Wichita Falls for a Christmas Eve caper that will leave you wondering where the film is going and who will be left by the end. A shady lawyer attempts a Christmas Eve crime, hoping to swindle the local mob out of some money. But his partner, a strip club owner, might have different plans for the cash in 2005s "The Ice Harvest"! Directed by Harold Ramis and starring John Cusack, Billy Bob Thorton, & Connie Nielsen. Hear your hosts discuss the discovery of this film several years back on a random Amazon rental, why Cusack and Platt steal the film with every scene they're in, what makes this an ideal Neo Noir with its lighting choices & Christmas Eve setting, plus Henrique and David share their reviews for "Red One" & "Y2k", and David shares a true story of dumb, drunken debauchery no one is ready for! If you were to turn on your TV right now, or open up Netflix, the chances of you stumbling upon a cheesy Christmas movie would be pretty high. They tend to be full of clichés, cringeworthy one-liners and predictable plots, but still we just can't seem to get enough. Let's take a moment to delve into the psychology behind Christmas movies, and how they got to be so successful. Mormon director George Albert Smith released the first Christmas film : a short silent drama called Santa Claus, in 1898, which showed Santa visiting a house on Christmas eve. Moving into the 20th century, the history of Christmas movies reflects the story of Hollywood itself. In the US, they really became a genre, or even tradition, in their own right. The first wave came in the 1990s. Who made the first Christmas film? If they're repetitive and predictable, how come we keep coming back for more? What are the key ingredients for a good Christmas film then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions !
