Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated “Holiday Selection” re-release of Episode #210. “Sit with the idea of what it would mean for you to take on a worthy goal, become the best version of yourself, and unlock your greatness by taking on the hard things. I'm asking not just for you, but I'm asking for me and my world, because it's a chance for all of us to live a better life.” – Michael Bungay Stanier I'm very excited to share my “Holiday Selection” re-release of one of our most popular episodes, featuring the great insights of Michael Bungay Stanier. As an exciting new year is coming, with its fresh energy of possibility, what would it mean for you to find and set a worthy goal, something that is thrilling, important, and daunting at the same time? Today's special Finding Brave guest reveals the 3 key components of a worthy goal, what it really means to commit to one, and why we don't have to travel this path alone, because we can ask for support along the way. Michael Bungay Stanier helps people be a force for change. He's best known for his book The Coaching Habit, which has over a million copies and has thousands of 5-star reviews online. His latest book, How to Begin, helps people find the clarity and courage to take on a Worthy Goal and start something thrilling, important and daunting. He founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that helps organizations move from advice-driven to curiosity-led. They've trained hundreds of thousands of managers to be more coach-like and their clients range from Microsoft to Gucci. Michael left Australia about 30 years ago to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he shares that his only significant achievement was falling in love with a Canadian. Michael now lives in Toronto, having spent time in London and Boston. Balancing out these moments of success, he was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his Law School professors for defamation, and his first published piece of writing was a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter called The Male Delivery. I encourage you to read Michael's latest (and very enlightening) book and let us know what lessons you glean from it. How has your energy been shifted, and what did you learn? Please feel free to reach out to Michael or me with your feedback and questions about what we discuss in this episode. Here's to your joyful pursuit of your worthy goal!   Highlights from this Episode: The worthy goal that Michael has for his latest book [5:44] Why he is expecting a big shake-up for the coaching industry in the very near future [7:07] What Michael means when he says that we unlock our greatness by taking on the hard things [13:52] How his childhood influences have contributed to the way that he now sees the world [17:36] Some of the ways that Michael “zags” when others “zig” [20:03] His approach to coaching and helping others do the thing that really matters to them [21:33] Where true growth will happen, plus the 3 components that make a worthy goal [23:45] What you can expect to gain by reading Michael's latest book [25:44] A powerful exercise that shows the importance of getting support from others while pursuing your goals [26:33] A reminder of why we always need to celebrate our victories, no matter how big or small they may be [32:01]   For More Information: Michael's Latest Book, How to Begin: Start Doing Something That Matters [With Bonuses] https://www.mbs.works/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelbungaystanier/ https://www.instagram.com/mbs_works/ https://twitter.com/mbs_works https://www.facebook.com/mbs_works-113849977032317/ All of His Michael's Books His Podcast & YouTube Channel Michael's Free Course, The Year of Living Brilliantly Manifesto for a Moral Revolution: Practices to Build a Better World by Jacqueline Novogratz   Kathy's Resources Mentioned: STAY TUNED – ‘KATHY AI” IS COMING SOON! "Love is risky. Love always ends. Should you do it anyway?” - Nicola YoonLove is a feeling that never exists solely on its own, and those likely companions to love (anxiety, grief) often bring questions such as, is this worth it? It's this question and others like it that Nicola Yoon explores in each of her novels. Nicola is a hopeless romantic. The affliction began in childhood after the discovery of her aunt's harlequin romance collection. From then on, Nicola's love of love would only grow stronger. But while her passion for romance was a love at first sight, her passion for writing was more of a slow burn.Today, Nicola Yoon boasts an impressive resume as a two-time New York Times bestselling author, a finalist for the National Book Award, a recipient of the Michael L. Printz Honor Book, and a winner of the Coretta Scott King New Talent Award. Notably, her first two novels have been successfully adapted for the big screen. In this episode, she'll tell us why she fell in love with the romance genre, and how she found her way to writing as a career after 15 years in finance. She also shares her own ridiculously cute, out-of-a-movie love story about how she ended up with her husband and fellow writer, David Yoon. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***Inspired by her own novel, "Instructions for Dancing,” in her reading challenge, Good Grief, Nicola invites us to explore the intersection of love and grief with a list of some of her favorite books. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com.Today's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Nikki Hayter, a library manager with the Des Moines Public Library system. The conversation navigates the intricacies of power dynamics, the biological instinct to retain power, and the ‘advice monster' we sometimes find difficult to let go of. Drawing insights from relationship experts, they emphasized the significance of active relationship management in both personal and professional settings. Michael underscored the critical role of open communication, genuine feedback, and the concept of “fierce love.” Discussing Michael's new book, How to Work with (Almost) Anyone, they touched upon the importance of feeling genuinely heard and seen, the power of silence, and the value of organizational culture. And the key attributes of a Best Possible Relationship.3 key attributes of a Best Possible Relationship:For any relationship to have a chance of success there must be three things present:Safe – Remove the Fear. Psychological safety, as described by Professor Amy Edmondson, where people feel safe and wholly accepted at work.Vital – Amplify Bravery. Being psychologically braver. Feeling enlivened by working on the hard stuff.Repairable – Fix the Cracks. Working relationships will go off the rails eventually. Some self-heal, but rarely to the state they were before. Nevertheless, good relationships work to fix the damage.Their conversation, interspersed with book recommendations and personal anecdotes, culminated in discussions on defining success, the role of community in personal growth, and surrounding yourself with people who will support you to bring something positive into the world.Michael's Bio:Michael Bungay Stanier is at the forefront of shaping how organizations around the world make being coach-like an essential leadership competency. Her impressive leap from struggling reader to bestselling author definitely improved her confidence, but the imposter syndrome and rejection sensitive dysphoria never really went away.  Join our conversation as Emily shares how she quiets that negative voice by incorporating gratitude and positive emotion into her writing process, what's changed since getting her ADHD diagnosis, how she survives the brutal book editing process, and much more. Emily's journey just goes to show how crucial interest is for the ADHD brain and what we're capable of when we follow it, and I'm so excited to share her story with you this episode.    Resources: Website: emmaleejayne.com; emilymckay.com Instagram: @emmaleejaynewrites Romance Writers of America

Did your obsession with romance novels mess up your sex life? Did you grow up wishing it was Femi on the cover, not Fabio? This week, the aunties Malaka and Nana Darkoa return to their teen reads and question how the genre tantalized and traumatized them. Inspired by an Adventures From The Bedrooms of African Women blogpost written by contributor, Voluptuous Voltarian – or VV - they dig into the problematic power dynamics of novels from Mills & Boon and Harlequin Romance. “I had just poisoned my brain,” VV says. “That stuff had given me a blueprint for romance and sex that was totally, totally, totally, totally unrealistic.” But they also excitedly discover that new generations of African girls have more to look forward to as Black women reclaim and rewrite the genre. “My commitment is that girls who look like me will see themselves in my books,” best-selling author Nana Malone says.   Malaka Grant and Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah host the Adventures From the Bedrooms of African Women Podcast. DISCLAIMER: Just a quick message before the episode begins. Spencer and I have been trying a lot of different things in regards to making VIA VHS a multimedia podcast while recording with each other from 2500 miles away. Unfortunately some of those things we’ve tried didn't work very well. For the double feature episodes of Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, I made the difficult decision to use the Skype audio for the podcast release. Unfortunately there were some unforeseen audio issues that went unnoticed until I listened fully to both recordings and it was impossible to use the recorded audio. The Skype audio isn’t ideal, but I feel like it’s at least listenable and I’d rather release the episodes as opposed to trashing it all together. You can also watch the episodes on YouTube if you prefer. So with that out of the way, on with the show. Romancing the Stone The story was of how Romancing the Stone was made is almost as romantic as the film itself. A burgeoning screenwriter Diane Thomas was supporting herself as waitress a at a local LA cafe, when non other than Michael Douglas came in for a bite to eat. Diane seized the opportunity by pitching her script for what would become Romancing the Stone to Douglas and the rest as they say, is history. The story of Diane Thomas ultimately has a tragic end, to be continued with our review of this film’s sequel Jewel of the Nile. Romancing the Stone is a clever action, romantic/comedy that’s often unfairly compared to Raiders of the Lost Ark. This witty play on Harlequin Romance novels was a huge success and is considered a classic today, also serving as a launchpad for director Robert Zemeckis. After troubling test screenings, which ultimately led several to re-writes and re-shoots, Zemeckis was fired from his next project Cocoon. But with excessive charm and charisma from his two main stars Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and great directing by Zemeckis, they were ultimately able to create an endearing 80s classic. In this episode of VIA VHS we look back Romancing the Stone, the first part of our Douglas/Turner double feature. It’s all about how to #TameYourAdviceMonster. And that’s no easy thing. This book: untangles the difference between Easy Change and Hard Change. tackles the thorny issue of how to change your behaviour so you stay curious longer. provides the tools to make you masterful at focus, and your conversations irresistible. introduces a new way of thinking about leadership that rests on curiosity and invites in empathy, mindfulness and humility. and so much more! Plus, it’s all written in a clear, funny and practical manner. The dysfunctional patterns that repeat themselves between individuals within teams are because of the advice trap. And these bad habits and behaviours and dysfunctional patterns will just keep happening as advice is perpetually carried forward.  Researchers suggest that advice givers are less likeable and are ineffective at developing others.  Advice is given by people who were not curious enough to find out what the real challenge is with the person they’re giving the advice to. Falling into the advice trap also limits change because people can’t identify the real challenge themselves. It stops success being scalable because it sticks people into the status quo.  The trap is keeping on giving advice even though it doesn’t work.  BIG IDEA 2 (9:24) – The types of advice monster.  There are personas of the advice monster – tell it, save it, and control it.  ‘Tell it’ loves the spotlight and believes it has all of the answers.  ‘Save it’ is the rescuer, who uses the excuse of being helpful to provide advice – with a ‘faint smell of burning martyr’. The third persona is ‘control it’, it’s always present and has delusions of grandeur and can’t possibly empower others because then it will lose control. All these personalities are really saying that ‘you are better than the other person’.  Which is quite a statement, but this should be confronting; every time you give advice, you are suggesting you are better than the other person. BIG IDEA 3 (11:48) – Stay curious longer.  The answer is curiosity. Michael talks about the key principles in the book; be lazy – don’t feel like you have to carry everything and make all the decisions and come up with all the answers; be curious – keep asking questions at all opportunities, and be often – coaching is something that shouldn’t happen only quarterly or annually but it should be your normal way of doing things. USA Today best-selling author Kate Hewitt seems to have “done it all.” She's a busy vicar's wife raising five children, and “between meals” she's also written more than 60 books in multiple genres – from classic romance to intensely emotional women's fiction  and historical family sagas. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Kate talks about how life – and publishing – is constantly changing, staying ahead of the curve, and the mystery in her own life that might make a story sometime. Six Things You'll Discover in this Joys of Binge Reading Episode: How she adapts to the fast changing publishing scene Why she likes to write in many different genres Why women's fiction is her first love Getting a start writing short stories The mystery in her own life that could make a story Writing more than 60 books while raising five children Where to find Kate Hewitt (also writing as Katherine Schwartz) :  Website: https://kate-hewitt.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KateHewittAuthor/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/katehewitt1 What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Kate. .  Hello there Kate and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us Kate: Thanks for having me Jenny, it's great to be here! Author Kate Hewett Jenny: Beginning at the beginning - was there a “Once Upon A Time" moment when you decided you wanted to write fiction?  And if there was a catalyst, what was it? Kate: Well, I've always written something since I was quite small; plays, poetry, newspaper articles. Ever since I was about 6, I always wanted to be a writer of some sort. Probably a very early catalyst was my brother, who wrote a short story and got a lot of attention for it. I decided I wanted to write a story too! So I wrote a story when I was about 5- it was one sentence long. My father read it, and I think that was the beginning of it all! Jenny: How amazing, and how lovely that your dad took it seriously! Kate: He did, yes! When I was about 6 I wrote a longer story, and put on a cover on it. I made it very official looking, and then I wrote on the cover "By the author of the Christmas Rose". Everyone kind of joked that I was into marketing at a very early age!   Jenny: You have a kicker line that you write “emotional stories in a number of genres” – and you're not wrong – everything from women's fiction to historicals, contemporary series, and classic Harlequin romance of the “wooed by a desert sheikh” kind. I guess they each appeal to you as a writer for different reasons . . . tell us a bit about the different challenges of  each one – and what aspect of your life they appeal to most . . . Kate: I think I like writing different genres because I really like the emotional womens' fiction I do, although it's quite draining. So to be able to switch from that, to something lighter is kind of like a palate cleanser writing wise, so I enjoy that. I started writing classic Harlequin Romance because I read those when I was a teenager, but to be perfectly frank I really started writing those because I'd read that that was the best chance of a steady income as a writer, and that's what I wanted. They have a little more of a "swept away" element to them, but I'd say my heart is more with the emotional womens' fiction; the Jodi Picault style of writing. Jenny: Yes, and I was amused to see in one of your blogs that you were saying that investing the time in your most recent book I think- it was a bit like thinking like Jodi Picault for a change! Kate: Yes. Kate Hewitt - Harlequin Romance Jenny: I can imagine Harlequins are fun though; they're probably only about 50,000 words are they? Kate: That's right. Jenny: You can get them done and have a sense of accomplishment. Kate: Yes, that's what I did like.
