Today's guest says that we need to be less ‘accountable' and more ‘Count-On-Able.” He's here today to explain what that means and why you should be doing that. Dave Bookbinder goes Behind The Numbers with Jeff Cohen, CEO & Founder of C-Level Roundtable and author of Count-On-Able - A Practical Guide to Lift, Shift and Empower You and Your Team. In this episode, Jeff explains what it means to be Count-On-Able and how to achieve that state for your team. He also shares the results that you can expect on metrics like growth and profitability, and what's driving him to share his process with others. About the Host: Dave Bookbinder is the person that clients reach out to when they need to know what their most important assets are worth. He's a corporate finance executive with a focus on business and intellectual property valuation. Known as a collaborative adviser, Dave has served thousands of client companies of all sizes and industries. Dave is the author of two #1 best-selling books about the impact of human capital (PEOPLE!) on the valuation of a business enterprise called The NEW ROI: Return On Individuals & The NEW ROI: Going Behind The Numbers. He's on a mission to change the conversation about how the accounting world recognizes the value of people's contributions to a business enterprise, and to quantify what every CEO on the planet claims: “Our people are this company's most valuable asset.”

One World in a New World with Jeff Cohen - Author of Count-On-Able: A Practical Guide to Lift, Shift and Empower You and Your Team With over 20 years as an Entrepreneur, Management Consultant & Business Coach Jeff is a highly effective business and turnaround strategist. He shares his father was the greatest influence in sharing the notion that he could do anything that he wanted. He didn't care what, only that he and his sister had the awareness of being able to do anything. What would have changed in your life with that kind of permission and support? Jeff shares he's had a lot of failures and successes, yet finds the ability to be vulnerable in his openness to being asked any questions. Nothing is off-limits. Are you able to do that? Why or why not? What kinds of triggers do we have, or do you have? How did you find them and what disturbances have they caused in your life? Jeff and Zen experienced divorce and estrangement from their children for a time because of their own processes. Jeff shares what it was like to build a software company from 0 to 15 employees in a couple of years. The story is fascinating and shocking. What kind of connotation does 'accountable' have in your mind? Is it negative or positive? How do we promote accountability without the negative side of the perception? Jeff offers some solutions that have come from decades of achievements, failures and learning how to facilitate people, places and things to work together better. When you are onboarding, how do you create effective representations of accountability, expectations, responsibilities and performance? He recognizes those things do change over time and will need conversations to re-define the latter appropriately. The DISC assessment comes up in conversation and the value it has for determining the communication and problem-solving preferences; matching employees and managers with the most compatibility and complementary indicators. He shares more insights, which you'll find valuable. Our conversation moves into the notion of 'agile' business development, which is Jeff's forte and his wisdom for the present and future business development deserves your attention. You won't get that from these show notes. Please, dive in and explore the opportunity to garner knowledge. Running a business or leading a team requires people to be accountable. Or at least that's what they tell us in B-School. What if you built a team where everyone, ... The post How to Become Count-On-Able (#050) appeared first on Leadership Powered by Common Sense.
What does it mean to be count-on-able? Jeff Cohen wrote the book on just that. It's his way of teaching the next generation of freedom fighters how to succeed in business. Whether you're just starting out, or have been running a business for years, many entrepreneurs end up feeling shackled to their business. In their fight for freedom, Jeff teaches entrepreneurs how to create teams and teamwork for businesses that grow with them and without them. One of the perks of being your own business should be the freedom to take that vacation, or spend more time with your family. Jeff has both successes and failures that he uses to educate fellow business owners. One such learning experience was the fall of his once very successful software business. When the market crashed in 2007, Jeff's once thriving business came to an end when he had to file bankruptcy. His next business venture was Granola Gourmet, which he took on the hit TV show Shark Tank. He not only didn't get any offers, he was told after filing bankruptcy he was now considered radioactive. Jeff didn't give up though, and he ended up proving them all wrong. Jeff found a way to get his business up and running, and very successfully. Because of this, Shark Tank did their first ever success story on Jeff. What You'll Learn: How tough times build perseverance. What inspired Jeff to write Count-On-Able. How to know when it's time to pivot your business. The difference between a boss and a leader. When you take small bites, and adjust how you move along the way it improves performance, and enables you to accomplish goals on time, budget, and with all of the features people want. During the economic recession in 2007-2008, I shut my software business down. I started a granola bar business and we started growing it rapidly, but it was really hard work, and the margins were not what I needed them to be. I went to work at IBM, and then did a program called the team management leadership program. I did a self assessment like the very the first three months of the two years and I saw that I was a crappy boss. The number one thing that happens in a company that creates failure is ineffective communication. What makes the difference for people is when there's effective communication. Commercial break Most leaders are not lifting people up into leadership, and the result is that they never have a business that grows with and without them. Both employers and employees need to be empowered to know what their strengths and weaknesses are. The most important thing a business leader can know is what they cannot count their employees for. In a matrix environment, honesty has to start from the top. Don't just be accountable, be Count-On-Able! ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? How to be Count-On-Able with Jeff Cohen “Stop being Accountable - BE Count-On-Able The new Patent Pending Process and Method that will Lift, Shift and Empower YOU and YOUR Team” Freedom is the dream of every CEO and entrepreneur. Developing leaders and teams with an ownership mindset is the ticket to this fabled haven. Jeff Cohen, founder of six businesses, now presents Count-0n-Able as the new and rapid success framework that guides CEOs to make this happen. It took eight years, working with over 300 CEO's, Business Owners and Entrepreneurs to develop, test and implement the Count-On-Able method and patent pending process. In my new book Count-On-Able, A Practical Guide to Lift, Shift and Empower YOU and Your Team, I lay out the number one impact to every business and a simple structured approach that eliminates this problem. I share dozens of stories about my life's successes and failures. The book includes stories about the success clients have had with the program and how we came to develop this process and method. The one thing you'll have to ask me about is my experience on Shark Tank's first season and the one word Kevin O'Leary used to describe me that had Robert Herjavec attack him. About Jeff I was eight years old when I wrote all of the professional sports teams and ask them to send me stickers. What I got was a stack of stickers that could choke a horse. It was enormous. And so I did the next thing that an eight year old would do. I went up to my mom and I said, Hey, Mom, I'd love to put these stickers up on my wall. Can I? Can I please? And she said, No, in fact, it was the fastest rejection I think I've ever heard in my life up to that point. So instead, I put some on my notebook. And when I went to school, my friends started asking about them. Before I knew it, I was selling stickers. I made $50 and my dad said, Jeff, you're an entrepreneur, and I've been living that dream ever since. I love being an entrepreneur and as an adult. I've started six companies. I grew a software company from nothing to 20 million in revenue in a little over two years. I've had the experience of being on Shark Tank and being called radioactive. Ah. I've also experienced tremendous success in everything that I've done, which is only countered by the tremendous failure I've experienced in many of the things I've done. Today I stand for every business owner, having a life and a business. The number one thing people can learn from me is how to empower others which makes it possible to take a vacation without working two to four hours a day or to take a sabbatical from the business and let others jump in and be the one. It also makes it possible for a business owner to sell their company and not have a five year earn-out. In my new book, Count-On-Able, A Practical Guide to Lift, Shift and Empower you and your team I outline my patent pending process, which I'm making available for everyone. The process is arranged to be effective to create TRUST and ALIGNMENT in companies of all sizes. It ensures that the right things are being done to fulfill on the goals and dreams that the leader has while building up their people. When you book me on my on your podcast I'll share all of those secrets. And right now the one secret I'll share is, it's just good business.
