In episode 5 of Season 4, we explore the science of memory in connection with the accounts of Jesus' resurrection. We start with Meredith Maran, an activist and journalist, who found herself at the center of the recovered memory movement in the late 1980s. We then interview Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, an experimental psychologist and distinguished professor at UC Irvine who is responsible for conducting ground-breaking studies in the reliability of human memory. Tying the episode together, we talk to Dr. Dale Allison, professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, one of the foremost scholars on the history of the resurrection about what likely happened after Jesus' death. Featured Guests (in order of appearance): Meredith Maran Dr. Elizabeth Loftus Dr. Dale Alison
In this podcast—Part 2 of our summer reading series—TNC Pastor David Bryan teaches from Dale Allison's newest book, “Interpreting Jesus,” on a third way to think about the stories of Jesus's miracles.

In this episode we're joined by Professor Dale C. Allison Jr., who is the Richard J. Dearborn Professor of New Testament Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and the author of Interpreting Jesus (published by Eerdmans). Over the course of our conversation we talked about why Prof. Allison chose to write this book as a collection of essays, how he used the volume as a venue to chart some new ways forward in his thinking and even to make some revisions to his previous work. We also talk about the prospect of changing your mind in print like this, and what advice he has for upcoming New Testament scholars. Team members on the episode from The Two Cities include: Dr. Josh Carroll and Dr. John Anthony Dunne. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode I talk to Dr. Dale Allison, Professor of New Testament Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including the brand-new Interpreting Jesus, out now on Eerdmans, where he analyzes several interesting and innovative issues related to the historical Jesus. We discuss contingent eschatology in 2nd Temple Judaism, the belief that God would intervene to rescue his people under certain conditions, whether Jesus thought himself to be the new Moses, why miracles aren't necessarily out of bounds in historical Jesus studies, and how the presence of women traveling with Jesus during his ministry impacts our understanding of his ethical teachings. We conclude with a discussion on method. Allison expresses his concerns about the reliability of human memory, and how exploring themes in the Gospels helps us to reconstruct Jesus better than attempting to discern the historicity of individual stories or sayings. Unfortunately, Streamyard adjusted the microphone settings to my computer instead of my microphone, which is why my vocals sound thin. I apologize for the technical difficulties! The Resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity, but the reality of the empty tomb is largely a matter of faith, not history. All of the evidence pertaining to the Resurrection is found within the New Testament. So how can anyone definitively prove that the Resurrection did or did not happen? If anyone can do it, Dale Allison can. Dale is a committed Christian and unblinking scholar who isn't satisfied with either the apologetic or skeptical arguments around the Resurrection. In today's Easter episode, we dive into the mysteries and inconsistencies of this remarkable story as it's told in the Bible, and walk away with more questions than answers. For a deep dive into all of the arguments and theories about the Resurrection, check out Dale's exhaustive and fascinating book, The Resurrection of Jesus: Apologetics, Polemics, History. Today I'm speaking with Dr. Dale Allison, historian and author of Encountering Mystery: Religious Experience in a Secular Age. The subtitle of the book notwithstanding, the unusual experiences we discuss are not explicitly religious. They're usually interpreted through a religious lens (often without any reflection), but almost all of them needn't be, which is something we return to quite a bit. Flatly disputing the phenomenon is not the only option available to the nonreligious. We talk about paranormal and parapsychological phenomena, and two major sources of skepticism towards things that fall into those categories. On the one hand, of course, there's materialism, conservative naturalism, skepticism (as in, the skeptic community), etc. But Protestant Christianity, I was surprised to learn, has also been a skeptical force in history due to their drive to debunk Catholic miracle stories, or even just extraordinary events documented by the Catholic Church that explicitly or implicitly were used as evidence for Catholicism. Since we're exploring new terrain that involves some quite unusual topics (e.g., clairvoyance, levitation, visions of dead loved ones, etc.) there's a lot more I want to say, even in this little description box, but I'll save it for the interview. One thing I forgot to mention during the interview: In addition to Dr. Allison's book, there are a couple podcasts that regularly discuss cases like the ones that came up today in greater depth. “Otherworld” and “Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World” come highly recommended from me. This is part 2 of the Early Church History class. Before the great revolution of 66 in which the Jewish nation declared independence from the Roman empire, no fewer than five micro-revolution occurred between 4 BC and 58 AD. In the years that led up to the first Jewish-Roman war (66-73), incompetent Roman governors repeatedly and egregiously antagonized the Jewish populous until there was no turning back. After the war that destroyed the temple that Herod had renovated, Christians and Jews began parting ways. This episode will briefly cover the three Jewish-Roman wars and how Christians and Jews gradually began to separate. Renowned Historical Jesus Scholar and Princeton Theological Seminary Professor, Dale Allison's life changed forever when he was just sixteen years old. In fact, he has chronicled nine profound spiritual experiences throughout his life. These extraordinary moments of transcendence led him to a comparative study to learn more about what is happening to people all around the world in our time. The result? A book that catalogues and describes weird encounters with angels in white, sudden terminal lucidity, near death experiences, and even encounters with evil spiritual entities. This is not the typical sort of book written by someone who has made a career of scholarship within a guild that generally prefers naturalism and reductionism to the miraculous or inexplicable. Nonetheless, now tenured and sitting atop a mountain of published successes--and without concern about his career--Professor Allison feels free to explore his own numinal episodes as well as those of a staggering number of others--most of whom keep such experiences to themselves. Who is Sean Finnegan? Read his bio here —— Questions —— You begin your book by telling three personal experiences of the transcendent. Were you worried what people would think about you as a distinguished scholar of Jesus and the New Testament, especially among the more secular-minded elements in the academy? You remark on the difficulty of acquiring accurate statistics on mystical experiences because people tend to keep their encounters private. Why is that? And yet, they seem to be increasing, or at least reported more (see p. 21) You talk about a small piece of paper that you keep in your desk draw that chronicles nine experiences you've had between 1979 and 1999. Do you think it's important for people to maintain their memories of extraordinary events? Honestly, your little piece of paper reminded me of Blaise Pascal's night of fire. He sowed it into his house jacket and it was only discovered after he died. Why do you think there's so much shame and silence surrounding people's experiences of spiritual realities? Let's talk about the dark side. You related some stories of people who experienced love or joy or light and then others where people felt terrified by the numinous. Let's talk about the so-called old hag experience (Newfoundland Legend). What is that? You found one source that claimed approx. 20% of North Americans have had this experience (p. 24). How do you make sense of that? Is it that people are in an altered stage of consciousness and can perceive a spiritual dimension that is usually invisible to them? Specifically, could you share about your daughter? (She saw shadow people and had PTSD for 10 years!?) Have you thought much about psychedelics? There's increasing research about micro dosing where people have similar experience to what you cover in the book, both benevolent and malevolent.prayer (skip)...though one story about the lady who saw a phone number and called a pay phone and got the guy who was struggling with negative thoughts Angels: you talk about the AIW (angel in white) as well as anti-gravity stories. You talk about people nearly falling off roofs or falling and then floating downwards. These are especially hard for people to believe since they aren't subjective experiences. These are either the most powerful or the most ridiculous. Did you struggle to include these? Sudden clarity among the dying..other dreams and visions (60%) Many Christians hold to cessationism, probably b/c it's easy. Dismiss everything as hearsay and hallucination. But, you're book, essentially makes that view impossible. But this raises another problem. Read p. 82. How do you respond to this objection?
Despite widespread skepticism on the matter, a significant number of people today have stories of religious experience - moments of inexplicable terror or rapturous joy, visions, near death experiences of the afterlife, encounters with angels, heavenly voices, and premonitions. How should rationally people respond? Our guest today is Dr. Dale Allison, Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. His new book, Encountering Mystery, is both a departure from his scholarly work and deeply connected to it.What would your reaction be if someone told you that, one night while sitting alone, she saw through the window a brilliant light descend from the sky until it was so large that it filled the room - and that it radiated a feeling of "pure love"? And what would you say if a friend confided that one night he woke up and could not move, felt he was being suffocated and sensed and evil spirit in the room?By default in the secular age we are skeptical about anything mysterious or supernatural. More likely than not, most people would respond to the stories above with embarrassment and concern about the person's grasp of reality, or they would attempt to explain them away through rational or scientific means. But the truth is that religious experiences like these are not as uncommon as they seem - although talking about such experiences often is. This is the case even in a faith tradition such as Christianity, despite the Bible's numerous accounts of miraculous and mysterious happenings. In Encountering Mystery, noted biblical scholar Dale Allison makes the argument that stories of religious experience are meaningful and not to be marginalizes - and that we have a moral prerogative to lovingly engage with such stories regardless of whether we have had similar experiences. Through a close look at phenomena such as moments of inexplicable terror or rapturous joy, visions, near-death experiences of the afterlife, encounters with angels, heavenly voices, and premonitions, Allison shows how ordinary practices of faith need not be at odds with individual religious experiences. Above all, he enjoins us to be honest about the persistence of religious experience in a secular age and to make space for those who encounter mystery in their lives.
From rapturous joy to inexplicable terror, angelic encounters to near death experiences, New Testament scholar Dale Allison has researched a wide range of phenomena in his new book 'Encountering Mystery: Religious Experience in a Secular Age'. He tells of his own experiences and explains why they are more common than many people realise, and why skeptics shouldn't dismiss them out of hand. Justin also brings listener questions from atheists and believers. New Testament scholars Dale Allison and Justin Bass discuss their different approaches to the evidence for Jesus' resurrection. Bass, author of 'The Bedrock of Christianity: The unalterable facts of Jesus' death and resurrection' says the evidence from the core historical facts points to a resurrection. Allison, author of 'The Resurrection of Jesus: Apologetics, Criticism, History' is less certain that these facts lead us to a bodily resurrection. Did you know that scholars who work on Jesus divide starkly into two major camps? On the one hand, the evangelicals do such great work on the existence of God, the historicity of the resurrection, and the reliability of Scripture. But, then they read the Gospels through the filter of their theological commitments, always coming away with a Jesus that looks suspiciously like the second person of the Trinity. On the other hand, liberal scholars tend to get the message of Jesus about the kingdom right, but then due to their anti-supernatural presuppositions, deny the resurrection and end up with a failed prophet. In this presentation, recorded way back in 2008, I share about my own quest to benefit from both evangelical and liberal scholarship to identify the genuine Jesus of the first-century.
