„King of Techno“ – so wurde Moby eingangs seiner Karriere Anfang der 90er genannt. Weil er der Funktionsmusik für den Club eine neue Bedeutungsebene gab, Techno mit Seele, Tiefgang und besonders: mit einem Gesicht. Seinem Gesicht. „Go“ mit dem Twin-Peaks-Sample war der Startschuss für Mobys einzigartige Karriere, „Feeling So Real“ setzte sie nahtlos mit einem weiteren großen Dance-Hit für die Charts und für MTV fort. Dann ging es über 20 Alben und 30 Jahre lang auf und ab, mit Genre-Exkursionen und Drogen-Eskapaden. Moby machte Punk, Wave, Akustik Pop, Disco, Orchester Pop und immer wieder Elektronische Musik. Im Juni dieses Jahres erschien sein 22. Werk „Always Centered At Night“, ein gelungenes, filigranes Album, das wegen seiner zahlreichen Gast-Sänger wie eine Compilation wirkt. Sein Meisterwerk bleibt aber für alle Zeiten „Play“, das Album, das dieses Jahr seinen 25 Geburtstag feiert. 1999 erschuf Moby damit ein völlig neuartiges Genre der Musik: Er vereinte melancholische Synthesizer mit Originalaufnahmen alter Blues-Sänger – immer wieder anders, immer wieder auf unterschiedliche Art berührend. „Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?“ - Na wegen Moby. In diesen Tagen feiert Moby 25 Jahre „Play“ und sein aktuelles Album mit einer Live-Tour. Die führt ihn nächste Woche auch nach Deutschland. Marc Mühlenbrock und Jörn Behr wollen Euch gebührend darauf einstimmen in Folge #096Moby, in der der Meister natürlich auch immer wieder selbst zu Wort kommt. Es geht um Ups and Downs, um seine erschütternd prekäre Herkunft, seine Freundschaft zu David Bowie, die viele Kritik, die Moby Zeit seines Lebens immer einstecken musste, und um sein zweites großes Lebenswerk: den Kampf für den Tierschutz.
