In dieser sehr persönlichen Club-Room-Backstage-Folge spreche ich mit Sofia Kourtesis über ihre außergewöhnliche musikalische Reise.  Sie erzählt, wie sie Peru verließ, nachdem sie dort wegen ihrer Identität keine Freiheit fand, und wie sie über Hamburg nach Berlin kam, zunächst im Chalet arbeitete  und parallel ihren ganz eigenen Sound entwickelte. Bald folgten erste Releases und Unterstützung von Caribou, DJ Koze und Bonobo. But I like to think of it as an expression of the richness and vitality of all music made under what is known as Latin music. Eigentlich schränkt der Rubrikname «Album der Woche» das Format des Releases sehr streng ein. Für Sofia Kourtesis' «Volver» machen wir aber gerne eine Ausnahme. Die neuste Veröffentlichung der Berliner Produzentin ist «nur» eine EP, ist aber so gut, dass wir sie die ganze Woche hören wollen. Zuletzt feierte die Welt Sofia Kourtesis für ihr Debütalbum «Madres». Darauf erzählt die Musikerin die Geschichte ihrer damals krebskranken und mittlerweile geheilten Mutter, die für ihre Behandlung extra aus ihrer Heimat Peru zu ihrer Tochter nach Berlin zog. Politisches und Persönliches in pulsierende House-Songs zu verpacken, versteht wohl niemand so gut wie Sofia Kourtesis. Und auch die neue EP «Volver» kann man nicht nur mit dem Körper, sondern auch mit Hirn und Herz hören. Sofia Kourtesis is a Peruvian DJ and producer based in Berlin known for her buoyant, upbeat music that channels and transmutes sociopolitical activism and personal hardship. While she's put out a number of solo works, her EP Fresia Magdalena and her debut LP, Madres—both of which came out on Ninja Tune—have been received with exceptional critical acclaim and put her on the map as a headlining touring artist. Both speak to some of the discrimination Sofia has felt as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in South America, as well as how she's confronted difficult topics like family caregiving, illness and death.  In this RA Exchange recorded live at C2C Festival in Turin, she opened up about her mother's recent battle with cancer and the neurosurgeon who provided life-saving surgery (as a thank you, Kourtesis took him and his surgery team out to one of her shows in Berlin). She also discusses her commitment to human rights at length. For Kourtesis, music is a form of activism and healing; she uses it to talk about her Latin American community and the movements that are happening, to show the diverse range of demonstrations for equality, for the queer community and for abortion rights. In a touching final moment of our talk, she opens up about the homophobia that ultimately caused her to leave her school in Lima and then to depart from Peru to Europe altogether. Pure energy from one of electronic music's brightest lights: Sofia Kourtesis. Clamour had been building around the Peruvian-born, Berlin-based artist's poignant brand of house music following a string of EPs and 12"s, culminating in last year's Madres—a passionate, vulnerable and excellent album that resonated widely. Madres packed in rare specificity for a dancefloor record, combining paeans to the power of sound with direct tributes to the neurosurgeon who saved the life of Kourtesis' mother. (Kourtesis even took him clubbing in Berlin as an additional thank you.) The album's earworm melodies, sparkling production and approachable aura made it a snap favourite, helping launch Kourtesis from bubbling to breakthrough on the global stage. In both sound and impact, it mirrors another record: Swim, the 2010 classic made by Kourtesis' friend and mentor, Dan Snaith. Sofia Kourtesis is a house music producer based out of Lima, Peru and Berlin, Germany. She recently released her debut full-length record, 'Madres.'. During the making of the album, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and there were only three neurosurgeons in the world who could operate on her. One of those neurosurgeons agreed to operate and saved Kourtesis' mother's life. Kourtesis shares her story with KEXP's Dusty Henry.
