Working through the set we heard from Oli Silk, Roy Ayers, Chico Hamilton and Alex Bugnon. For me the sweet spot started with Camelle Hinds, followed by Joe Leavy and Dayon....then along come Tanqueray Hayward, Gregory Porter, David Peaston to send it into orbit !! A naturally gifted musician, San Diego born bassist Darryl Williams began playing bass at the young age of 13. Within two years he was playing at local clubs and events around the San Diego area, which includes opening up for smash RnB group Lakeside. He also played with Gospel Legend Shirley Caesar at age 16. After graduating from high school, Williams did a four-month tour of Japan with other young talented musicians, which he states as being "unforgettable". Upon returning to the States, that same band did a three-month tour opening for soul legend Al Green. After that tour, Darryl enrolled in the Jazz Program at San Diego State University and studied with San Diego legends Gunner Biggs and Rick Helzer. With a hunger to grow musically, he sought out other teachers as well which includes former Miles Davis and John Coltrane bassist Marshall Hawkins, Sarah Vaughn bassist Bob Magnusson, great San Diego bassist Cecil Mcbee Jr. and San Diego sax icon Hollis Gentry III. By age 21, Williams was a regular on the San Diego music scene performing regularly with artist like Hollis Gentry, Evan Marks and Patrick Yandall to name a few. In 1997, Williams moved to Las Vegas and performed regularly at all the prestigious Hotels and Casinos working with headliners and recording artist. One of the artist Williams performed regularly with was Las Vegas Hall Fame inductee Clint Holmes. In 1999, Williams was hired as Musical Director for The International House Of Blues Foundation and continued working with several artist and was involved several recording projects. From 2001 to 2003 he was one of the in house bassists at the world renowned Blue Note Jazz Club in which performed with sax legend Chico Freeman, RnB legend Angela Bofil and was the co-host of the Sunday Night Blue Note Jam Session. Williams was also the second call bassist for Chaka Khan from 2003-2004, which included several performances across the States. From 2003 to 2007 Williams worked with several recording artist in Las Vegas such as Ronnie Foster, Ghalib Ghallab, Tevin Campbell, Clint Holmes, Keith Washington, Skip Martin, Howard Hewitt and many more. In 2008 Williams relocated to California. Upon relocating, he released his first solo CD, “That Was Then” and received high praises from several top smooth jazz writers and dj’s. In a Jazz Times Magazine article dated October 2008, noted jazz writer Brian Soergel says, “ Is there room for another smooth jazz bassist to join the ranks of Wayman Tisdale, Brian Bromberg, Michael Manson and Gerald Veasley? In the case of Darryl Williams the answer is an enthusiastic yes”! Two songs from Williams debut effort were featured on the Weather Channel and can be heard today on Sirius XM radio, Music Choice and international and national radio stations alike. From 2008 to current, Williams has performed or toured with several of the top Contemporary Jazz Artist of today. Some notable names include Euge Groove, Michael Lington, Richard Elliot, Mindi Abair, Jeff Lorber, Peter White, Brenda Russell, Jeff Golub, Paul Brown, Darren Rahn, Jessy J, Everette Harp, Jeff Kashiwa, Eric Darius, "Queen Of Disco" Gloria Gaynor and many more. Williams continues to record today with several artists and can be heard on Jonathan Fritzen's upcoming release "Magical" as well as working on his second release, which he intends to release in January 2013. True to its title, the Cleveland based performer’s independent debut album Road Trip chronicles his multi-faceted journey – starting with playing the sax in church and, over the past decade, founding and leading The Cavor Project, an 11 piece ensemble renowned as one of the most diverse bands in the city. Andre Cavor found the perfect producer to take his artistry to the next level in Darren Rahn, a saxophonist and artist who has worked his studio magic for Whalum and Butler in addition to genre greats Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne and Jeff Lorber. The collection includes three original tracks penned by Darren Rahn (“Road Trip,” “Say Something” and “Without A Doubt”), powerhouse covers of Adele’s “Hello” and After 7’s late 80’s smash “Ready or Not,” and five of Andre’s favorite all time gospel tunes – “More Than Anything,” “For Your Glory” (featuring background vocals), “Total Praise,” The Clark Sisters classic “You Brought the Sunshine” and “Heaven,” originally recorded by BeBe and CeCe Winans.   “Mixing contemporary jazz and gospel songs on Road Trip felt like a natural extension of my many live performances over the years,” says Andre, who first began playing the sax at 16 but let it go during his eight year stint in the army before rediscovering it in the early 2000s. A tireless entertainer Harasim’s hundreds of stage appearances include performing at President Obama’s Inaugural Ball with best pal Rahn and playing twice at the Dubai International Jazz Festival.   His new album “Shades of Nate” on Woodward Avenue Records, afforded him the creative license to produce an eclectic and out of the box record.  On this release he worked with two rappers, K-Squeez and Dyl. Track # 7 is a “wild twist” as Jonathan Widran puts it, to a Beethoven song called Moonlight Sonata and he covers Phil Collins’ mega hit, In The Air Tonight featuring Melina and Nils. One of the most stylish and creative lead bassists of this wonderful time in C-jazz is the rising star Julian Vaughn whose fluid bass runs and compositions always seem to hit that special nerve in you that’s reserved for the smooth groove. Here on his latest released,Limitless, he continues to serve it up in abundance. Bringing in a few luminaries from his Trippin N Rhythm/Cutmore Records family (saxmen Lebron and Darren Rahn, keyboardist Nicholas Cole, and flutist Althea Rene) along with saxmen Marcus Anderson and Elan Trotman, the bassist loads up with heavy grooves and romantic seductions. The up-tempo but easy ridin’ lead track “Ride Along” firmly complements tracks like the energetic “Initiate” and calls a cool timeout for the fluid entrance of the more laid back romance-laden offering “All to Myself” and the mid-tempo R&Bish “Ecstacy.” Vaughn’s wonderful tribute to the late great Wayman Tisdale shows how much of an impact the jovial and greatly talented Tisdale had on Vaughan. We all love a great up-tempo jam, and Vaughn certainly offers his share here, but his skill with crafting slow- to mid-tempo tracks with tons of melody like the previously mentioned “All to Myself,” “I Will,” and “Say Yes” is equally as powerful and full of charm. Here is a bassist who is doing it the right way…feeling the genre and the groove and how it moves him and his music to always strive for excellence. Not one to be quiet about making an entrance, producer/keyboardist Nate Harasim's Trippin N' Rhythm label debut, is one sure to place him firmly in the new class and crop of emerging talent, highlighted by a cameo vocal performance from young Maxine Hardcastle daughter of mega-hit maker Paul Hardcastle. With Harasim's upcoming 30 minute performance showcase on Fox news Detroit, writing and producing the theme song for the 2010 American Smooth Jazz Awards and coming off an 8 week run at #1 on the National radio charts with 'Fun In The Sun,' a track he produced for guitarist Steve Oliver, the media and radio in unison, have taken notice of his burgeoning talent. Rush highlights the many sides of a young man with a keen ear, serious chops, strong pop sensibilities and displays his break out of the box mentality and his willingness to the push the envelope.
