Do you feel like you're emotionally frozen this month? Are the endless Michigan gray days weighing on you? Or maybe your misgivings about true love, success and renewal are coming out again. Whatever the gloomy feeling, it means it's probably time to put on Frontier Ruckus' On the Northline (released in Feb. 2024). Today, we're revisiting the in-studio conversation and performance with Michigan’s own Frontier Ruckus. Matthew Milia, lead vocalist, says the key to art is making it specific. "It's seen in the best literature in filmmaking," Milia said. "Like the more specific you can be, somehow people out there can do their own like interior translation, and it actually makes the universal amplified within those specifics." The band isn't always in a hurry to release more albums. That's because they see themselves as friends first. But, as Milia points out, their albums provide both a light into their lives at the time and the music industry of the time. "[The music industry has] unrecognizably changed, especially post-pandemic," Milia said. "But, like looking back at every record, it came out in a different music industry climate." GUESTS: Matthew Milia, lead vocals and multi-instrumentalist David W. Jones, banjo player and vocals Zachary Nichols, multi-instrumentalist Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Prosperity Gospel, blab it and grab it, name it and claim it, health and wealth... false teachers who say you need to "give to get" come in many flavors. Beware of false doctrines and false teachers. We are called to walk in truth and light and worship the one true God. What do we mean when we say prosperity gospel? What makes a false teacher and why do we need to be aware of them? How do we know what the truth is and if someone is a false teacher?   NOTES: This Weeks Whiskey: Stranahan's Blue Peak single malt whiskey Prosperity Gospel relies on ideas like, "that the more money you give, the more money you'll get"... "doesn't a good God what you to be prosperous, happy and healthy?" It uses hope and promises of "the good life" and part-truths, to emotionally manipulate people to give money they don't have to make false teachers wealthy The "Health and Wealth Gospel" treats God like a magic genie, who is obligated to give us what we want if we just have enough faith or say the right prayer or give enough money Suffering, hardship, illness or poverty are not necessarily due to people sinning or being unfaithful to God (but the prosperity gospel would tell you it is) A large indicator of a false teacher is that they don't preach on or talk about suffering. They don't have a theology of suffering because they are preaching a false gospel about how god wants to deliver us from suffering, if we just give enough and have enough faith. Idolatry is what happens when we focus more on the gifts, then the Giver. Prosperity Gospel is a counterfeit gospel... you spot counterfeits by really knowing the real thing (intimately knowing God and His word)   “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.'” Deuteronomy 18:20 ESV “My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.” Ezekiel 13:9 ESV “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV “And the Lord said to me: "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.” Jeremiah 14:14 ESV ---- The Gospel Coalition - "What you should know about the prosperity gospel" - www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/what-you-should-know-about-the-prosperity-gospel   David W. Jones outlines five errors of prosperity gospel teaching: 1. The Abrahamic covenant is a means to material entitlement. 2. Jesus's atonement extends to the “sin” of material poverty. 3. Christians give in order to gain material compensation from God. 4. Faith is a self-generated spiritual force that leads to prosperity. 5. Prayer is a tool to force God to grant prosperity.   “In light of Scripture, the prosperity gospel is fundamentally flawed,” Jones says. “At bottom, it is a false gospel because of its faulty view of the relationship between God and man. Simply put, if the prosperity gospel is true, grace is obsolete, God is irrelevant, and man is the measure of all things. Whether they're talking about the Abrahamic covenant, the atonement, giving, faith, or prayer, prosperity teachers turn the relationship between God and man into a quid pro quo transaction.” ---- https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/story-behind-john-pipers-most-famous-attack-on-the-prosperity-gospel/   Call To Action:  Follow us on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/the_old_fashion_dad_podcast/) & Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/oldfashiondadpodcast/) for more content & DM us to connect! The One Emotion Christians Should Never Have

Mornings with Jeff & Rebecca

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2021 2:11

The great theologian Francis Schaeffer once said, "Bible-believing Christians should never have the reaction designated by the term shocked." That quote has always stayed with me as it helps me be intentional not just with my reactions to the world, but also my expectations. If we think about it, the Bible clearly tells us what is wrong with the world. The whole story of Scripture is about how a disease called sin has entered into every human being's life as it draws us away from God. If we truly understand how detrimental sin is, we should expect this world to be exactly the way that it is.One of my favorite comedians said it best when he said:"I've never met a person in my life that I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that they are capable of doing awful things."When we're watching the news and we see that something terrible has happened or somebody has done something truly horrifying, the reality is that as Christians, we shouldn't be shocked by this. This isn't to say that  people don't have a right or even a responsibility to mourn, lament, or grieve as those are key to processing emotions well and ultimately landing at the destination of praise in our faith. But what this does mean is that in certain situations where most people would react in outrage, anger, or anxiety, we as Christians have an opportunity to go above that to display the heart of our Father. One of my favorite qualities about someone is their ability to react well when situations demand an extreme reaction. It's not that the person is denying the reality of their circumstances, it's their ability to look at in light of what they believe so that they can move forward in a way that shines a lot on God's presence in their lives.Pastor Rich Villodas put it perfectly when he said:"In a world torn by rage and anxiety, one of the greatest gifts followers of Jesus are called to offer is a simple, non-anxious presence. Not a presence removed by this reality, but a presence that refuses to be shaped by it." At the end of the day when the whole world seems to be panicking and people wonder what is going on, we as Christians not only know the answer to that question, but we also know the solution to the problem as well: Jesus. Christian Ethics Professor David W. Jones put it beautiful when he said:"When we find ourselves surprised at the decay, trials, and troubles of the world, it may be an indication that we were not viewing the world through a biblical lens."Let's use our lives as an opportunity to have a humble expectation of the world so that instead of a life characterized by panic and anxiety, we can provide a peaceful presence in the lives of those who may not know God yet. "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:7“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33While the world may look out of control, we worship a God who isn't and it's because of that truth that we can live with peace now knowing what is to come.
