Je vous invite à la rencontre d'une grande personnalité du son français : Pierre Jacquot. J'ai eu le plaisir d'être accueilli dans les locaux de l'institut Abbey Road où il enseigne, pour parler de son parcours, son expérience et de son métier d'ingénieur du son.Du haut de ses 40 années d'expérience, il évoquera les studios qu'il a fréquentés, du Real World de Peter Gabriel en passant par Davout jusqu'à sa « deuxième maison » le studio Omega. Pierre Jacquot se considère comme un chanceux d'avoir pu collaborer avec ses « héros » anglo-saxons comme Peter Gabriel, Ray Charles, Peter Erskine ou Steve Lukather ainsi qu'avec de nombreux artistes de la scène européenne, autant sur scène qu'en studio. Comme il nous l'explique l'école du Live est un atout majeur pour l'ingénieur du son studio :« Exercer conjointement dans les domaines du live et du studio reste pour moi une garantie d'ouverture d'esprit, d'un sens de l'essentiel et d'une certaine rigueur. Je dois bien l'avouer qu'aujourd'hui, je préfère le son des albums dont les manettes sont tenues par des « soundmen » live. »Pierre Jacquot est un véritable passionné et il aime transmettre sa passion. Formateur et blogueur, il s'est toujours appliqué à « transmettre le flambeau », nombre de ses anciens assistants sont souvent eux-mêmes devenus des ingénieurs reconnus :« Il me semble indispensable de voir ses ainés travailler afin d'acquérir un savoir faire, une attitude, une certaine aisance avec l'outil et la pratique. Le studio d'enregistrement est un fabuleux instrument de musique ! J'ai eu le privilège d'apprendre le métier au travers des consignes très orthodoxes des grands preneurs de son de la musique classique, puis dans les grands studios des maisons de disques : Claude Wagner, Claude Ermelin, Dominique Poncet pour ne citer qu'eux, talents inégalables qui avaient autant de savoir que d'intuition et qui m'ont appris entre autres, la nécessité d'une grande humilité en face de la prise de son de grosses formations, par exemple ! »Nous avons beaucoup à apprendre avec des personnalités aussi riches d'expériences comme Pierre Jacquot, il nous rappelle l'essentiel de ce métier : le rapport humain. Je suis très heureux de vous ouvrir les portes du dernier temple des studios parisiens : les studios FERBER. L'aventure commence en 1973, alors que René Ameline enchaîne les productions à succès dans les studios Davout. Il se met en quête d'un lieu pour y créer son propre studio avec une acoustique bien à lui. Le grand studio A de Davout lui paraissant trop brillant pour le besoin de ses productions, il conçoit lui même l'acoustique du studio Ferber. Son but est d'obtenir une acoustique plus sèche et maîtrisée. Avec une superficie de 187 m2 et une hauteur sous plafond de plus de 5m cela aurait pu paraître impossible et pourtant cela permet d'accueillir jusqu'à 60 musiciens et d'avoir cette définition parfaite sans résonance gênante.Tout ça grâce à des types de bois choisis scrupuleusement et repartis stratégiquement sur l'ensemble des parois du studio. Au départ la régie du studio A était équipée d'une console API 32 voies, puis elle a fait place à la seule console d'enregistrement conçue par David Manley et Rupert Neve, à savoir la Neve série 82-48. Il y avait un studio supplémentaire, le studio B, occupé à l'année aujourd'hui par Renaud Letang puis très vite d'autres studios sont venus se greffer autour, tous destinés à une clientèle de producteurs de disques.Aujourd'hui Ferber compte 11 studios différents. Avec une surface de 85 m2 et une cabine de 35 m2, le studio B offre un environnement plus confiné, mais il reste très vaste et polyvalent. Aujourd'hui, il est centré autour d'une console Neve V3 avec 48 entrées et bien sûr l'automatisation "Flying Faders". Le plateau d'enregistrement comprend une cabine iso ainsi que cinq panneaux modulaires pour remodeler la salle.Ferber propose également le Studio D, d'une superficie de 45 mètres carrés parfaitement adapté au mixage et à la post-production de films. Il est équipé d'une console SSL 4000 avec 48 entrées et d'une écoute en 5.1 basée sur des haut-parleurs Dynaudio et PMC. Philippe Avril y réalise la plupart de ses projets. Tous les studios offrent une grande variété d'équipements hardware. Vous y trouverez les grands standards mais aussi des trucs beaucoup plus insolites.Le fondateur et propriétaire, René Ameline disparu aujourd'hui, a choisi Renaud Letang comme successeur, depuis lors, toutes les opérations du studio sont supervisées par ses soins. Ingénieur du son et réalisateur accompli, il a débute en 93 avec l'album d'Alain Souchon "Foule sentimentale" et depuis il enchaîne les succès. Dans ses débuts, le studio Ferber a fait sa réputation en accueillant des artistes français et internationaux renommés tels que Serge Gainsbourg, Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, Jacques Dutronc, Jean-Michel Jarre, Jane Birkin, Vanessa Paradis, Alain Souchon, Feist et The Kills pour n'en citer que quelques uns. Youssef Kerkour Ridley Scott's Napoleon returns to The Mighty Dragon with another great interview. This week, I am speaking to Napoleon's right-hand man, Marshal Davout. Or should I say Youssef Kerkour who portrayed this infamous soldier otherwise known as The Iron Marshal. Davout himself was a highly acclaimed general, being present at most of Napoleon's battles. Devoted, driven and resilient, I can't help but think Youssef was the right actor to portray him, as he has these qualities himself. Napoleon isn't the first time Youssef has worked with legendary director, Ridley Scott. He was also in House of Gucci, portraying Nemir Kirdar. We talk about Ridley Scott's style of working, as well as Youssef's preparation for his roles. I am convinced that Youssef is the most prepared actor on set, cleverly adopting psychological practices to immerse himself in the role. His British and Moroccan heritage has given him access to many great parts, but we talk about how he “niched down” on his Arab heritage to gain even more exposure.

This episode elaborates on Tolstoy's depiction of the historic retreat of Kutuzov eastward (following the Danube) towards Vienna. Kutuzov's army amounted to 35K and were often buttressed by similarly retreating Austrian allies. The first part of Ch. 9 references this march along with three battles where the French vanguard caught up with Kutuzov's rear-guard.The previous chapters mention Napoleon's mastery at Ulm, where around 25K Austrians surrendered after a brilliant encircling maneuver.   Austrians who escaped were also retreating toward Vienna. There was a notion manpower should concentrate on defending the Capital.Kutuzov's army was pursued by a significant detachment of the Grand Armée as Napoleon wished to pin them down -- allowing Napoleon to concentrate additional forces on taking Vienna.Kutuzov finds himself among an increasingly hostile civilian population. Many were prone to welcome the French rather than encounter Russians, whose necessity to live off the land wore out any welcome. On Oct. 28, 1805, Kutuzov had his army cross the Danube. This allowed him to postpone any conflicts until the Battle of Lamach on 10/31. It involved about 3,700 allies and similar amount of French. The French were led by Marshall Louis-Nicolas Davout (The Iron Marshall).  Kutuzov delegated the defense to General Pyotr Bagration. The engagement took place in a small village and involved calvary, hussars and artillery. The French won the field but Bagration held off Davout long enough to allow Kutuzov an effective retreat. The French only suffered about 50 casualties (killed or wounded) while the Russians likely experienced 150 and Austrians 400.Soon after, on 11/5 was the Battle of Amstetten. It was the first time during the War of the Third Coalition that Kutuzov's forces were involved such a sizable conflict. There were around 7K allies and 10K French. Traditional techniques were used, including using the terrain to an advantage, as well as retreats and counterattacks with reinforcements. The was a mad calvary charge led by Marshall Joachim Murat. For Murat, known for bravery and rashness -- this was not a shining moment. Estimates indicate 300 casualties for Bagration's forces and 1,000 each for Austrians and French.  Once again, Bagration gave Kutuzov's main force sufficient distance from the French. On the field, there was no clear winner.The Battle of Dürenstein then took place on 11/11. Here, Kutuzov's army achieved its greatest success to date, which provided quite the (temporary) morale boost. The allies drove off the French, who were under Marshal Edouard Mortier. Around 24K allies faced 14K French and Kutuzov's men captured some artillery, battle standards and prisoners. Each side took around 5K casualties.   It appears Mortier overextended his vanguard and paid the price, getting his men caught in a valley between two opposing columns. Overall, the Austrians took the worst of the affair as General Johann Henrich Von Schmitt was killed. Schmitt was a respected strategist, surveyor and map maker. He was likely accidentally shot by a Russian soldier, which was greatly resented.Tolstoy describes the increase of casualties. Kutuzov is compelled to leave throngs of his wounded behind, with a cordial note – commending them to the humanity of the French. The expectation was that the prisoners would be treated and exchanged. However, the countryside was overwhelmed and proper treatment was an impossibility.

Après avoir battu les Autrichiens à Ulm, en octobre 1805, l'Empereur voulait tourner ses forces contre la Russie, qui, avec l'Angleterre et l'Autriche, était l'âme de cette 3e coalition montée contre la France.Contre ses adversaires, l'Empereur utilise aussi la ruse. Sollicitant un armistice, il se présente au tsar de Russie, Alexandre Ier, comme un homme fatigué et las de la guerre. Tout est fait pour faire croire aux Russes que les troupes françaises sont démoralisées et se débanderont à la première attaque.En attendant, Napoléon étudie avec soin le lieu où aura lieu la bataille. Much akin to an auditory vignette, is Clément Davout aka Adhémar's reshaping of Across Sellenti by Nils Edte. Stretching across 15 minutes, the sonic landscapes shift and scatter with elements fading in and out of existence, giving movement and a sense of unpredictability. Sweeping pads and textures lending a natural edge, evoking imagery of unnamed jungles or forests enveloped by night. All backed in the signature Adhémar fashion with tribal percussion and muted kicks that make his music instantly recognizable. As part of a longer form release, Adhémar has created a flowing 50 minute journey of Nils Edte's contributions through his musical lens. Even creating an entirely new track from the elements of the starting material. We wanted a mix from Clément early on. His works are like instances of mastered calligraphy, emotionally rooted into the intuitive understanding of human cognition. His exquisite sense of style, meticulous production, recognizable sonic palette, and sensitivity to the smallest details make him one of the Delayed all-time favorites. It seems like everything he puts his mind on never disappoints. For this mix, Adhemar reworked all the tracks and did special edits to make it unique. Delicate with a flawless flow; opening up, yet introspective. It spotlights all his signature elements and is mesmerizing in a balance of engagement, relaxation, and unwinding. Presently deep and subtly detailed, the “In Praise of The Plant” is magically breaching the gap between abstract and real by permeating the biomimicry into its sonic canvas.
