I have been doing the 21-Day Meditation Experience with Oprah and Deepak Chopra. I know, right? Two of the best to learn meditation from. It’s an app that encourages a daily practice of meditation to create a lifelong habit. Oprah opens each practice with insight on why this meditation will be important for your life. Day 7, entitled “Obstacles to Grace Melt Away,” she opens with this:“When you feel struggle, pause, try to take a step back, give yourself a moment’s time to find your center. That struggle is a gift, a whisper, it is your graceful, true self, tapping you on the shoulder a little bit trying to remind you, ever so gently, to look again. Because you always get to choose, do you react to an obstacle as a negative or do you embrace it as an opportunity to respond with the open-hearted knowledge that all will be well?”Deepak, I feel like it’s okay to call him by his first name just like we do Oprah, right? Then walks you through the meditation practice. On this particular day he explains:“Once we start the practice of gratitude, our perspective opens up. We start to see how the universe generously supports us in countless ways. From this shift in perception optimism naturally emerges, because the ups and downs of daily existence, hale beside the infinite generosity of nature just as a candle fades in the noon day sun.”I love that visual – our problems can be the candle, but if your sunlight, aka your gratitude for life, is shining so brightly, you won’t even be able to see the candle. But when your world is dim, sometimes all you can see is that flame. It’s funny how making a change in something as small as perspective can define how we view our entire life. Finally, Oprah closes the episode by sharing: “There is a gift in every moment, good or bad. Allow the wisdom of difficulty to speak to you and lead you to where your life truly wants to go.”When she puts it that way, to me those obstacles become freeing. When you allow those things to happen, it is just life/ the universe/ God correcting you where it wants you to go.This reminds me of a quote I saw recently from musical composer Truman Fisher, he said, “The pause is as important as the note.”I am so guilty of wanting to get to that next note, sometimes before I’ve even finished playing the current note. The notes are where I shine, the notes are what I am proud of, and the notes give me joy. But why can’t those pauses fill us in the same way? It is opposite of what our society preaches, being busy is glorified and rest is lazy. But think of how much goodness we miss, by not enjoying the pause, because we mistook it to be an obstacle.I’m so excited for you to hear the experts I’ve interviewed for Season Four.My interest in meditation grew after my conversation with Dr. Amanda O’Bryan and she shares mind-blowing meditation techniques with us. Stephanie Feger also preaches the importance of perspective as she encourages you to “color today pretty.”Maybe you will find inspiration from the dynamic female duos in Kelsey & Lauren, harvesting seeds in women entrepreneurs or Katie & Kari teaching us all how to turn our homes into sanctuaries.I went straight to the horse's mouth for my interview with Tyler Lloyd from LOU CBD. I wanted to find out all about the latest CBD craze. I also talked to Josh Johnson, aka The Kentucky Gent, about how he gets to travel the world, eat all the food, and call it work. And I know you will love the stories of blood, sweat, and tears that will light you on fire for your dreams when you hear the bravery from Brianna Rooney, Jenna Ahern and Maizie Clarke. These ladies are doing big things, and I’m blown away and how they juggle all the hats they wear.Whichever episode becomes your favorite, I hope we can all find a place in life that allow us to celebrate the notes AND the rests. "I felt like jumping on the rooftops & going 'okay, wait a minute, there's stuff we can do! We don't need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars at a fertility clinic, we can step back here, listen to what your body is saying, and make major change!'" - Sarah Clark, Fertility, Lifestyle, & Health Coach This week's guest is an intelligent woman who specializes in fertility. If you are up for having your mind blown, tune in. In this episode, Heather and Sarah dig deep about a mind-body connection and all the effects that NOT listening to your body can have on you. What you eat, how you feel, your physical health, mental health, environmental stressors, genes, etc are ALL connected and can have a major impact on the way you live. These things can also affect fertility which is why Sarah's practice focuses so much on the mind-body connection when it comes to your ability to reproduce. Sarah was in her mid twenties when she discovered she had Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) but she didn't let that deter her from having her first child via (IVF) In-vitro Fertilization. She was sick all the time, spending way to much money, and suppressed her feelings of not being able to conceive naturally. After much hard work, she was able to have success with IVF of her second child but she still hadn't taken her health into her own hands. Both of her children have food intolerances that, in theory, may have been preventable if she had taken better care of her body and listened to the way it was whispering to her. Fast forward to Sarah in her 40s, newly awoken after taking a life coaching course - which led her to take a health coaching course - where she discovered all of her own food sensitivities. She thought about how this may have affected her ability to conceive and that curiosity led to her practices as a Fertility Coach today, and her "Get Pregnant Naturally" podcast, where she helps women do just that - get pregnant naturally. What if I told you that you could actually increase your brain function in just 8 weeks and all you have to do is meditate? Scientific studies have shown the meditating can improve things like your memory, compassion and sense of self relevance. At the same time it can decrease your anxiety, fear and stress. In this week’s episode, Sharon shares her own journey into mindfulness and meditation and how she has come to understand these two practices. She then offers up 5 simple ways for how to bring mindfulness into your everyday and how these simple tactics lay the groundwork for more in depth meditation. If you are a meditation-curious or ready to deepen an existing practice, the week’s episode is for you. “What is it that my awareness lacks? What am I hungry for? What diversions am I giving more attention to than my true self?” Ideas Shared Mindfulness vs. Meditation These two terms are often used interchangeably. Here is how Sharon sees the two: Mindfulness - The act of bringing an observer’s lens to your thoughts; quieting the mind by bringing focus to it. Meditation - Letting go out your thoughts and tapping into your inner being and in so doing connecting to the universal oneness of all things. 5 Simple Ways to Bring Mindfulness into Your Day Pay attention to your breath - Take 3 deep breaths and really allow yourself to notice the quality of each breath. Hold a receiving posture - Sit or stand with your palms up, shoulders back and chest open. Follow your thoughts - Sit down with both feet rooted into the ground and bring focus to your thoughts. Do not let the thoughts run the show; allow your attention to slow your thoughts down. Appreciate the action you take - Bring attention to whatever you are doing. Be in the task and appreciate your ability to both do and notice what you are doing. Get uncomfortable with not doing - To find stillness, we often have to move through the discomfort of not choosing the distraction. If I find myself in a planning mode or remembering mode or a future mode, I always go back to the breath and start with the breath. Also have gratitude for your breath because at the end of the day it's actually what keeps us alive. And so breathing to me is everything. And so it's everything about how I live my life and in the choices that make it. It starts with the breath. On today’s show, I reveal how meditation can be a great way to deal with the stress and anxiety of being a lawyer. I share the science behind meditation as well as my personal struggle (and triumph) in finding a technique that worked for my busy mind. Things you will learn in this episode: How the pressures of being a lawyer can affect your daily life and why a healthy outlet for your mind is critical What most lawyers have in common and why these personality traits can create an impediment to trying "new age" (although they're not so new...) practices like meditation My experience in trying to figure out how to turn off my mind and meditate; I was convinced it wasn't possible for a lawyer like me but I was wrong The neuroscience behind meditation and how Harvard researchers have proven that it changes the brain over time The benefits of meditation including how 50 year-olds can have the same memory as 20 year-olds What changes you can expect to experience if you start a regular meditation practice Tips and resources to get started, even if you've tried it before and believe it's impossible for your busy legal mind!
