Tasting Notes:  Deep Eddy has always been a leader in the premium "flavored vodka" space producing some of the more natural-tasting products on the market. Acquired by Heaven Hill a few years ago, they've continued to win over customers with their easygoing and natural-tasting offerings, and Deep Eddy Lemon is one of the best. Hot off the heels of Ruby Red Grapefruit, their biggest hit and a home state fave in Texas, the Lemon is their perfect summer refresher. Pour it over ice with some club soda or add your favorite lemonade to fortify the flavor and you'll see what we're talking about. One of the best things to do is add an oz or two to 12 ounces of wheat beer for a refreshingly tart and easy summer sipper.

‘Big companies are not as good at innovation’: Canteen Spirits CEO Brandon Cason on disrupting the hard seltzer industry

Making Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2021 34:04

Canteen Spirits was ready to take on the hard seltzer industry -- and then the coronavirus hit. The company launched in late 2019 and began 2020 expecting to grow to new heights. According to co-founder and CEO Brandon Cason, the first few months of the pandemic were hard when the country shut down and many channels slowed down. But things began to quickly ramp up once the first coronavirus peak subsided -- and the beverage brand is in growth mode once again. Canteen makes canned vodka-based sparkling beverages. Cason joined this week’s Modern Retail Podcast and described the year’s journey. According to Cason, Canteen hit on the right space at the right time. Most hard seltzers are malt-based, but many people have been seeking out similar drinks that are made from spirits. “We recognized that consumers wanted to elevate and go premium when it comes to what they’re drinking,” he said. In the third quarter of last year, things began to take off, with sales doubling month over month during that period. Now, Canteen is about to expand into a new area -- Tequila -- with a soon-to-launch sparkling beverage called Cantina. Cason has a history in both liquor and CPG -- hailing from both the sparkling water brand Waterloo and the vodka company Deep Eddy -- and thinks that with new types of beverages it’s better to be the disruptor. “Big companies are usually not as good at innovation as they are mergers and acquisitions,” he said. Which is to say that a big company like AB-InBev may only invest in making a brand new product if the market has already bore out the results. Even with this current success, Canteen has a lot of growth to do. For one, it’s yet to build out its DTC channel and has only been focusing on wholesale. In his view, growing a direct online presence is a mid- to later-stage step for a spirits startup -- getting retail traction was the most important first step. The company is also waiting until the world opens back up, so it can begin more heavily marketing in person. Events, he said, are “still just a big placeholder for us” -- for obvious reasons. But once the vaccine is deployed and people are socializing once again, “there are dollars ready to go.”

That felt like the cornerstone idea of why I am doing this and why these animal portraits can be important and part of this, a part of humanities portrayal of animals in artwork.” Photographer Randal Ford (https://www.randalford.com/), who specializes in conceptual portraiture and advertising work, just released a gorgeous book of animal portraits. The Animal Kingdom is a project that he has been creating on along side his regular work for almost 10 years. It all started when DJ Stout of Pentagram Design (https://www.pentagram.com/about/dj-stout) approached Randal to make portraits of Dairy cows. It was a novel and fresh idea and soon he found himself getting more animal related advertising work. When he self initiated his own photoshoot of a lion, tiger, and bear, it tipped over into a personal project that would take him to many locations and studios to capture a 150 different mammals and birds. He describes his love of photography as a kind of obsession that started in high school and grew into college even though he ended up studying business. By not specifically pursuing an art or photography degree, he was forced to find his own way and solely create a vision of what he wanted his career and work to look like. He used his resourcefulness and determination to learn what he could from various sources and worked hard to build his business and develop his skills by creating a lot of images and by experimenting. After moving to Austin he worked as an assistant and second shooter but soon found himself wanting to go out on his own. Since that time he has built a successful career with advertising portrait work and directing and is now venturing into the fine art world with his arresting studio images of animals. His work has entered the cannon of depictions of animals that humans have been creating since the days of cave paintings. Just as he has perfected his skill in portraying people he now has proven his ability to capture an animals personality, beauty, and soul just as well. The viewer can connect with these subjects on a deeper level as they bring their own emotions and memories to the unspoken conversation we have with art as a mirror of ourselves. Randal is a consummate professional and is obviously a very skilled image maker, aritst, and business person. I really enjoyed this conversation and am excited to share it and help spread the word about his new book. It’s quite an accomplishment and is worthy of the praise it has received. We talk about the book but also the balance between being and artist and running a business and he shares some bullet points and recommendations for aspiring artists towards the end. Have a listen to the interview, share some feedback, and be sure to check out his work at randalford.com (https://www.randalford.com/). Some of the subjects we discuss: Photography origins Studying business Choosing a career focus Grandfather’s lessons Jack Hollingsworth Self initiated work Frames per animal Going out on his own Being professional Learning to shoot portraits Photographing animals Working with people Relinquishing control New respect for animals Animal portrait specifics Dairy cow beginnings Lion, Tiger, and Bear Using clients images 40,000yrs of animal art Beyond exotic animals Animal connections Powerful moments Primal and present Handlers and owners Cat Haven in Cali Producers & assistants Retoucher/background Davis Gallery show Advertising and Art Advice for artists Animal stories/names Creative collaboration Directing big shoots Bullet points elaboration Business books Family/final question Behind the scenes on some of the animal photo shoots. When it comes to entrepreneurship, Clayton Christopher believes that “you can’t read the book; you gotta live it.” And live it he has; Christopher is best known as the co-founder of Sweet Leaf Tea, acquired by Nestlé Waters in 2011, and Deep Eddy Vodka, which just five years after its launch was sold to Heaven Hill Distilling for a reported $400 million. Yet even as a highly successful entrepreneur and investor, Christopher, currently the co-founder and managing director of private equity firm CAVU, has always looked beyond simply achieving a desired end result. In an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio, he urged business owners “to appreciate and cherish the journey,” a perspective that will yield a rare and valuable currency few will ever grasp. As part of our conversation, Christopher also delved into why he believes that “the need for human capital is greater than it’s ever been,” how board and management teams can most effectively work together, and why entrepreneurs should spend less time on adding new distribution and instead focus on “creating a success story” inside individual stores. This episode also features an interview with another “kitchen to exit” entrepreneur: John McDonald, the founder of iconic craft beer company Boulevard Brewing. McDonald, who founded Boulevard nearly three decades ago, is something of a godfather in the beer business. In our conversation, he spoke about the origins of the company and its early days as a pioneer of the craft beer category through to its 2013 acquisition by Duvel Moortgat USA. And in this week’s edition of Elevator Talk, we hear from Kabir Gambhir, the founder and CEO of innovative beverage brand Bevea. Show notes: 2:42: Four Letter Brands LIVE -- The hosts chat about recent visits to BevNET HQ by BKON, maker of innovative brewing machines and Waku, a wellness tea brewed with 20 super herbs from the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. The hosts also discuss the speaker lineups at the upcoming BevNET Live Summer 2018 and NOSH Live Summer 2018. 12:09: Interview: Clayton Christopher, Co-Founder, Sweet Leaf Tea/Deep Eddy Vodka/CAVU -- At Natural Products Expo West 2018, Christopher sat down BevNET editor-in-chief Jeff Klineman and discussed his remarkable journey as an entrepreneur and how he advises and invests in fast-growing brands. 36:58: Interview: John McDonald, Founder, Boulevard Brewing Co. -- Boulevard has led the craft scene in the Midwest and is the largest specialty brewer in the region. Brewbound assistant editor Justin Kendall recently visited Boulevard HQ in Kansas City, Missouri and as part of their conversation, McDonald shared war stories from Boulevard’s journey and why he never allowed himself to believe that the company was going to succeed. 1:04:50: Elevator Talk: Kabir Gambhir, Founder/CEO, Bevea -- Gambir is the founder and CEO of Bevea, a recently launched brand that markets innovatic tonics made with organic coffee fruit, ginger and botanicals. Kabir recently visited BevNET’s West Coast branch in San Diego, where he joined us for an interview included in this edition of Elevator Talk. Brought on my good friend and former bandmate, Paul Banks, to talk about some special songs. We actually taped this while watching Game 7 of the World Series, and when we wrapped, hustled over to Deep Eddy bar during the rain delay to catch the ending. One week later, the file was still on the editing room floor when I read the news of Leonard Cohen's passing. Paul says that his last song selection, a cover of a Cohen song, is his favorite song ever. I decided to tack on the original version at the end of the podcast, because it is such a beautiful song, and I'm glad Paul was able to share that.
