So i was just sifting through some poetry online, and i came across a sherYe qadam qadam balayen, ye sawaad e ku e jaanaa.nWo yahin se laut jaaye jise zindagi ho pyaariNow i had often heard this sher being used in mushairas and other public settings, but never really knew who the author of this famous couplet was. It was Maulana Aamir Usmani. A poet that in my ignorance had never heard of before.Turns out, he was quite the maverick. Schooled from Deoband, even sold kites for a living once, wrote for bollywood, and many such feats. Khair. I finally got to this nazm of his; and what a nazm it is. Such a morning call to everyone who thinks the world was much better before and its just gone to the dogs now. Listen for yourself. If you want to talk, i am aamir@urdudaan.inHappy listening :)

Exploring Qāsim Nānotwī's Engagement with the Akbarian Tradition: Interpreting Waḥdat al-Wujūd by Shazad Khan

This paper proposes to delve into the profound legacy of the Akbarian tradition, an intellectual tradition rooted in the works of Ibn ʿArabī, which extensively contemplates the central doctrine of tawḥīd (the oneness of God) and has exerted a lasting influence on subsequent Islamic theological discourse. However, the reception of this tradition within Muslim scholarship has engendered multifarious responses, sparking contentious debates primarily revolving around the perceived incompatibility of distinguishing between the Creator and the created. These ongoing debates have seen scholars either championing Ibn ʿArabī as the "The Greatest Saint" (Shaykh al-Akbar) or denouncing him as a heretic. Within this context, Qāsim Nānotwī, a pivotal figure in the formation of the Deobandi school of thought, emerges as a noteworthy scholar who engages with the Akbarian tradition. His scholarly pursuits are steeped in the kalām tradition, where he seeks to reconcile apparent theological inconsistencies in revealed texts, the Quran and hadith literature, employing the methodology of burhān (demonstrative logical knowledge) while also incorporating a mystical perspective. Nānotwī's writings unveil not only his profound reverence for Ibn ʿArabī but also his intimate familiarity with the conceptual paradigms of the Akbarian tradition. It is this reverence for Ibn ʿArabī that motivates Nānotwī to offer a rejoinder to prevalent misconceptions surrounding the doctrine of waḥdat al-wujūd (oneness of being) and to clarify its differentiation from waḥdat al-mawjūd (oneness of existents). This presentation aims to explore Nānotwī's writings, not only in terms of his comprehension of waḥdat al-wujūd but also in his innovative use of this concept to establish the existence of God, elucidating how all facets of creation are inherently ontologically dependent on their Creator and derive their reality from the Divine existence. As a scholar hailing from the Indian subcontinent during the late Mughal and early British Raj era, this paper endeavours to illuminate the interpretation and integration of the Akbarian tradition within the corpus of Sunni Muslim literature, particularly through the lens of one of the founding figures of the Deoband school of thought.

In this episode, we explore the interplay between religion and geography through a case study of the mountain regions that formed the borderlands between Afghanistan and British India then, from 1947, Pakistan. In recent years, the region entered the headlines through its association with the so-called Pakistani Taliban. But this was only the latest in a series of movements to emerge from a region whose innate social structures and enforced political autonomy fostered a distinct trajectory of religious development.  Beginning with the formation of this ‘tribal borderland’ through the cartographic boundary-marking of the colonial Great Game, we’ll trace the interplay of religion and geography from the mid-nineteenth century to the present-day as British rule was replaced by Pakistan. Along the way, we’ll follow the transformation of this borderland Islam as traditional Sufi leaders lost influence to reformists associated with the Deoband movement of the lowlands, which was in turn forced to adapt to what had become local religious as well as political modes of self-rule. Nile Green talks to Sana Haroon, the author of Frontier of Faith: Islam in the Indo-Afghan Borderland (Columbia University Press, 2007).

From its humble origins as a small-town madrasa founded in colonial India in 1866, the Deoband movement has become one of the most influential molders of contemporary Islam. By tracing its trajectory of expansion, and unpacking its doctrines, this podcast follows Deobandism from provincial India to the world, before turning to its complex relationship with Sufism, on the one hand, and the Taliban, on the other. Together with its allied Tablighi Jamaat missionary society, the impact of Deobandism points us to the leading but little-recognized role of South Asia in contemporary global Islam. Nile Green talks to Brannon D. Ingram, the author of Revival from Below: The Deoband Movement and Global Islam (University of California Press, 2018).

Over the past few weeks, the Delhi Police have been filing charge sheets in a number of cases related to Delhi riots that had taken place late in February. According to police records, 751 cases were filed related to the violence that happened in waves over three days in certain areas of North East Delhi that ended up killing 53 people. At the core of these charge sheets is a common theory of the riots being a planned conspiracy in the follow up of the NRC-CAA protests. While one charge sheet alleges a plot to carry out a "big blast" during US President Donald Trump's visit in February, another attempt to draw links between the Tablighi Jamaat. Some others claim women's activist group Pinjra Tod was involved, while some accuse suspended AAP councillor Tahir Hussain of playing a role the riots. But interestingly, certain details in some of the charge sheets don't add up.Tune in to The Big Story where we breakdown the details of the charge sheets filed over Delhi Riots.Producer and Host: Shorbori PurkayasthaReporting: Aishwarya Iyer & Aditya MenonEditor: Shelly WaliaReferences: Delhi Riots: Is Trump Visit a Hole in Police's Conspiracy Theory? Assalamu alaykum,As I begin my own spiritual journey, I want to hear from those who have taken this path before me. This podcast focuses on them and listening to their stories — uninterrupted. My name is Hebah Masood and I invite you to reflect on the trajectories of their lives, and the guidance and blessings provided by Allah swt along that journey.Listening to Shaykh Amin Kholwadia's voice takes me back to high school, when I used to attend his Sunday tafsir classes. His classes were not just for the average person.Sometimes guests included other scholars like Dr. Umar Faruq Abdallah who would ask very deep questions and in that space became students as well.Shaykh Amin with his dry British humor is known as a hidden gem of Chicago. He studied all across India and Pakistan for just under a decade including at the original Darul Uloom in Deoband, India, where his father had also studied.Shaykh Amin's journey includes growing up in the household of a scholar, leaving home at 16 to do hifz, studying tasawwuf, training as a mufti in Islamic law and eventually founding Darul Qasim — an institute that helps students gain Islamic knowledge that is authentic and relevant for Muslims in the West. Today Darul Qasim has over 40 students, 12 faculty, and an amazing new space— complete with an extensive library. Please listen to the visionary behind this beautiful institution. His story intersects with many great luminaries: his father Hadrat Mawlana Musa ibn Ibrahim Kholwadia, Mawlana Abu Sawood, Qadi Mujahidul Islam al-Qasimi, Shaykh Muhammad Miran, Qari Muhammad Tayyib al-Qasimi (grandson of Mawlana Muhammad Qasim al Nanotwi, the founder of Darul Uloom Deoband), Qari Riyad al-Rahman, Dr. ‘Abd al Razzaq Iskandar, Mawlana Idris Mirathi, Mufti Rida al-Haqq, Mufti Sa'id Ahmad al-Palanpuri, Mawlana Mi'raj al-Haqq, Mawlana Muhammad Na'im, Mawlana Anzar Shah al-Kashmiri, Mawlana Nasir Ahmad Khan al-Barni, Mawlana Muhammad Salim al-Qasimi and Dr. Allama Khalid Mahmood.-Also available on most other major podcast streaming services including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts, Castbox and Podbay.-Do you enjoy this podcast? In this Season 1 - Episode 4- Gulbano Ki Shaadi - Old Delhi Podcast (In collaboration with The Might of Pen) Afsha Kausar has written a beautiful story about one of her childhood incidents which is interesting and gives a moral at the end. Narrated by Ahmer Ammar in pure urdu the story starts from the place where Kausar is remembering her childhood summer vacations during which she went to her maternal home in Deoband as she didn't have any nearby relatives in her old Delhi. During one such vacation, she went to the Meena Bazaar in Deoband city along with her aunt, where she bought a plastic doll. Kauser adopted the doll as her child and her younger sister became the doll's aunt. Then she remembers her maternal uncle who was very humble in nature and it was probably he who must have given the idea of the wedding of the doll to another doll. Kauser then again went to Meena bazaar where she bought another doll for wedding, which was adopted by a girl named Sadaf, who lived in the maternal home of kauser. Then both the dolls were given the name Gulbano and Gulfaam respectively. Later on, the wedding date was finalized and cards were distributed to the relatives for the first time in their family and whole house went into the preparation of the wedding. The writer then remembers how she accepted the initiative that after the wedding both the dolls would live in her house in Delhi 6 or she wouldn't allow the wedding to take place at all. Just after the wedding the summer vacations also ended and Kauser came back to her city of Shahjahanabad with both the dolls. Meanwhile, in few days Gulfaam generated a defect in his eye which ended him in getting negligence from Kauser and her sister. In the end, Kauser was a struct with the fact that it was the phenomenon that “son in law who stays in her wife's home is never treated well" was the reason why Gulfaam was never cared about. This story is a true example of the ill value we get from our society that those husbands who live in the houses of their wives families didn't have any respect.

* Priyanka Gandhi kept us on the hook for a while and chose to stay in the shadow even after formally joining the Congress. In fact, she delivered her first speech as an official member of the party only yesterday but it is not clear if she'll be contesting in this year's General Election at all. * This update came from NDTV who quoting sources said that "Priyanka would play an active role and helping her mother and brother in their constituencies as well as help other congress candidates in the state". * Party President Rahul Gandhi had an interactive meeting with students of Stella Mari college in chennai as a part of the Congress' outreach program, where he took questions from the students. He said that if his party forms government then they will pass the Women's Reservation Bill, he also pointed out that the Narendra Modi has not yet held any press conferences in his career as PM.   * We may not know for sure if we'll see Priyanka in action this election season but what we do know is that she met Bheem Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad at Meerut's Anand hospital. Azad who was arrested from Deoband in Uttar Pradesh after allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct by using more than a stipulated number of motorcycles in a political rally in Saharanpur district. Does his meeting with Priyanka hint at an alliance? We'll know in the coming days.  * A delegation of BJP leaders which included Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Nirmala Sitharaman among others met the Election Commission and requested the agency to declare all of West Bengal as a 'super-sensitive' state to ensure a fair Lok Sabha election. * Prime Minister Narendra Modi tagged several social media influencers, media houses, journalists members of opposition and Bollywood celebrities to encourage voter participation in the upcoming elections.   * Of course some of the members of opposition took the opportunity to take a dig at the prime minister like SP leader Akhilesh Yadav tweeted that he was happy that the prime minister was appealing to the "mahagathbandhan for a mahaparivartan (change)". while some others like Omar Abdullah, who is the leader of NC reminded Modi that his government has disenfranchised people in J&K by not holding the Assembly elections on time.

Revival from Below: The Deoband Movement and Global Islam (University of California Press, 2018) by Brannon D. Ingram is a timely study of the Deoband movement from its inception in India to its transnational contemporary context in South Africa. Through careful analysis of historical textual discourses, Ingram carefully guides his readers through important polemics that manifested amongst the Deoband ‘ulama and its implications for Muslim publics and their performance of a “traditional” Islam. The study, then, goes onto highlight why and how the Deoband movement’s relationship to Sufism has been miscategorized and crucially situates the Deoband ‘ulama’s own complex relationship with Sufism, especially Sufi ethics and comportment. Overall, Ingram challenges his readers to think more carefully about Sufism in the 21st century. This book is a must read for those interested in Sufism, South Asian Islam, and global transnational Islam. Shobhana Xavier is an Assistant Professor of Religion at Queen’s University. Her research areas are on contemporary Sufism in North America and South Asia. The Deobandis are virtually unknown to most British people, yet their influence is huge. As the largest Islamic group in the UK, they control over 40% of mosques and have a near monopoly on Islamic seminaries, which propagate a back-to-basics, orthodox interpretation of Islam. Founded in a town called Deoband in 19th Century India, it's a relatively new tradition within the Islamic faith, but has spread throughout the world, with the UK being a key centre. Migrants from India and Pakistan brought Deobandi Islam to the UK during the 1960s and 1970s, setting up mosques and madrassas in the mill towns of Bury and Dewsbury, from which a national network grew. The Deobandi movement is large and diverse: from the quietest and strictly non-violent missionary group the Tablighi Jamaat to the armed sectarian and jihadist groups of Pakistan. The BBC's former Pakistan correspondent Owen Bennett Jones investigates which strands of Deobandi opinion have influence in the UK, speaking to people from within the British Deobandi community, from scholars to missionaries to madrassa students. In the first of two programmes he explores claims that Deobandi Islam is intentionally isolationist and that its strict beliefs put it at odds with mainstream British culture, leaving the community segregated from wider British society. Though if true, is that really the fault of Deobandi Muslims? Producers: Richard Fenton-Smith & Sajid Iqbal Researcher: Holly Topham
