Samiha Rahman's Black Muslim Freedom Dreams: Islamic Education, Pan-Africanism, and Collective Care (New York University Press, 2026) follows three generations of Black American Muslims as they pursue education through the Tijani Sufi order in Medina Baye, Senegal, outside the anti-Black and anti-Muslim racism of the United States. This deeply rich ethnographic book captures the transatlantic flows of Black American religious life through the prism of Black mothers and othermothers (as conceptualized by Patricia Hill Collins “motherwork”) and the young people whose lives are transformed through the process. By focusing on the Islamic education offered by the Tijani Order, such as Qur'an education, we learn about the intricate networks of kin that step in to support the young Black Muslims who have migrated for schooling, highlighting the tangible realities of collective care and service that circulates within the Tijani Order. These registers of care and service are informed by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse, the Senegalese Islamic scholar, Sufi Shaykh, and pan-Africanist, whose teachings define these networks of education, organizing, and care work. The book then offers critical insights into the flow of one particular Sufi community between the United States and Senegal, and how dreams of better futures for Black Muslim youth and the liberatory goals of Pan-Africanism intersect to co-constitute a significant economy of collective care, Sufi service, and Islamic piety. This book will be of interest to anyone who works on education, Sufism, Black and African Islam and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. This episode of Habibi House features Dr. Rudolph “Butch” Ware — historian, author, and one of the most important living scholars of Islam, Black liberation, and decolonial thought. A professor of history at UC Santa Barbara, Ware sits down with us to unpack the stories that empire tried to bury: stories of Sufi rebellion, revolutionary faith, and the sacred legacy of Black Muslims in shaping not just Islam — but global freedom movements.WHAT WE TALK ABOUT:Why there is no Islam without Black peopleHow Sufi orders led anti-colonial revolts across West AfricaWhy liberals fear true solidarity between Black and Arab communitiesWhat it means to reclaim Islam from both empire and whitenessMalcolm X, Palestine, and the revolutionary roots of faithWhy Ware says Islam is inherently radical, and liberals won't save usHow storytelling, family, and love serve as tools for resistanceWHO IS BUTCH WARE?Rudolph “Butch” Ware is a historian of West Africa, Islam, and the Black Muslim world. He's the author of The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa, and a leading voice in challenging Western narratives around Islam and African history. He speaks at the intersection of Sufism, slavery, liberation theology, and Black diasporic spirituality. His work dismantles colonial myths and re-centers the sacred in our understanding of resistance.KEY QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE:“There is no such thing as Islam without Black people. Islam didn't just show up in Africa — it was born in Africa.”“When the empire suppresses love, joy, and memory — storytelling becomes a revolutionary act.”“Liberalism is fine with coexistence, as long as it doesn't disrupt the structure of violence. That's not liberation.”WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERSAt a time when Muslim identity is either flattened or weaponized, Dr. Ware reminds us that faith has always been a tool of both survival and struggle. In a world where Gaza is burning, ICE is raiding, and history is being rewritten in real time, this episode offers truth — rooted in legacy, memory, and resistance.0:00 Intro – Who is Butch Ware?1:35 Growing up Muslim, Southern, and Black4:00 There is no Islam without Black people7:12 How Sufism sparked anti-colonial revolts10:05 Blackness, slavery, and prophetic tradition13:45 Liberalism vs. Revolutionary Islam16:30 Islamophobia, empire, and the theft of history20:55 Malcolm X and Gaza: Solidarity across struggle24:30 Love, storytelling, and decolonizing spirituality29:45 Final message to young Muslims and Black ArabsABOUT HABIBI HOUSEHabibi House is a culture-forward, decolonial, and unfiltered podcast centering MENA voices and their intersections with global liberation. Alḥamdulillāh, Episode 4 will be going live, In shā' Allāh.Here's a quick look at what we'll be discussing, in shā' Allāh:
Understanding Tarbiyah Islamiyah: Nurturing Faith through Islamic Education1. IntroductionTarbiyah Islamiyah refers to the comprehensive Islamic upbringing that nurtures a believer's faith, character, and actions. It involves spiritual growth, ethical conduct, and acquiring beneficial knowledge. In this article, we explore the importance of Islamic education through Quranic and Hadith references.2. Submission to Allah's CommandsA believer submits completely to Allah's will, without question."It is not for a believing man or woman—when Allah and His Messenger decree a matter—to have any other choice in that matter. Indeed, whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone far astray." (Quran 33:36)True submission is an essential aspect of Islamic education, leading to contentment and obedience.3. The Importance of Good CharacterIslamic education emphasizes good manners and humility. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:"Every religion has its distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty." (Sunan Ibn Majah 4182)Cultivating good character through Tarbiyah Islamiyah strengthens individual and community ties.4. Love for Allah and His MessengerA core aspect of Islamic education is fostering love for Allah and His Messenger."Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness of faith: 1. The one to whom Allah and His Messenger become dearer than anything else. 2. Who loves a person solely for Allah's sake. 3. Who hates to revert to disbelief as he hates to be thrown into the Fire." (Sahih al-Bukhari 16)5. Remembering AllahFrequent remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and strengthens faith."Remember Me; I will remember you. And thank Me, and never be ungrateful." (Quran 2:152)Regular recitation of Dhikr (remembrance) is a key practice taught in Islamic education.6. Seeking Forgiveness and RepentanceRepentance is a means of purification and renewal of faith."O people, seek repentance from Allah. Verily, I seek repentance from Him a hundred times a day." (Sahih Muslim 2702b)"And turn to Allah in repentance all together, O believers, so that you may be successful." (Quran 24:31)7. Having Good Thoughts of AllahMaintaining a positive perception of Allah is encouraged."Allah says: 'I am just as My slave thinks I am, and I am with him if he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself; if he remembers Me in a group, I remember him in a better group. If he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 7405)Trusting in Allah's mercy and having hope in His forgiveness are important lessons in Tarbiyah Islamiyah.8. ConclusionIslamic education is a lifelong journey of spiritual and moral development. Through sincere submission, good character, love for Allah and His Messenger, remembrance of Allah, repentance, and positive thinking, Muslims nurture their faith and strive for success in this life and the Hereafter.May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness. Islamic education has historically been dry, unexciting and a means to an end to get our children knowledgeable and informed on our deen. But what can we learn from recent innovators, media and Western programmes for children that utilise more interactive and engagement approaches to teaching and learning? And how can we incorporate these into our materials for better effects? In this episode, host Zainab speak to Lamise, founder of Messenger Magazine about this topic, her inspiring journey and commitment to children's educations and her tips on getting better results and less push back from children as they learn and even get excited about learning.
In today's episode, we're debunking a common myth about teaching Islam to children. There's a widespread belief that children need to fear their teachers to learn effectively, leading many to adopt a strict approach. But is this truly the best method for our children's education? We'll explore what scientific research says about effective learning environments and, more importantly, how our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught the Deen. Join me as I uncover the best practices for teaching our children in a way that fosters love and understanding. . Connect with Me!

Dr. Butch Ware: Is Capitalism Your Religion? Thinking With Your Heart, Finding a Spiritual Guide, The Weaponization of God and the Devil, and More. Welcome back to Podcast Noor, enjoy a live podcast recording with Dr. Butch Ware! This conversation was recorded as part of a live event, our Virtual Ramadan Iftar in April 2023, where we gather hundreds from around the world to share an evening breaking fast and sharing conversation. Dr. Butch Ware is a historian of West African Studies at UC Santa Barbara. His teaching focuses on Islamic thought, anti-slavery movements in West Africa and the African Diaspora. Dr. Ware is also the author of “The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa.” This conversation is very spiritual and there were so many times that I was broken wide open. We get into things like the difference between the mind and the heart, and how to engage your heart as your thinking organ. We talk about how, for a lot of people who claim to be practicing a specific religion or faith tradition, their religion is actually capitalism. We get into how to find your spiritual guides, and I even dare ask the question, “Who do you think the Devil really is?” rather than “what” the Devil is - what is the idea of the devil? What does it actually represent? Dr. Ware talks to us about the weaponization of God, and how sometimes parents use God as a weapon in their toolbox to try to control kids to obey them. In that sentiment, he also talks about his learnings in which he found that there really is no such thing as a “Muslim child”, and you can replace ‘Muslim' with any sort of faith tradition. The power in that message is a really, really important one and one that I benefited from and I think it could do a lot of healing for others. I'm so happy that a lot of you have been sharing with me that you have been enjoying these spiritual conversations because I am very openly on this journey, asking these really big questions. So, here is Dr. Butch Ware. PS, since this was Live, you'll hear me reference the Q&A portion but I did not keep it for this podcast recording because it was too long. Next time I guess you'll just have to be there! Welcome to this episode of Podcast Noor. * Transcripts + Listening: www.ays.media/podcastnoor/butchware *
Abdulrahman Bindamnan spent his childhood studying in Yemen's Islamic schools. He memorized the Qur'an, a book of 77,000 words, and spent countless hours perfecting his Qur'anic pronunciation. Reflecting on this experience from the vantage point as a graduate student in the United States, he argues that too large a proportion of Muslim children fail to receive a secular education, and instead advance the primacy of revelation over reason. What is the current role of education in the Islamist agenda? What effects do such dogmas have in the West?
Kris's "Story for All Ages" today is a story about a wise queen preparing for life beyond her reign. It begs the question - "How are we preparing for our futures? - and - if it is our belief - how we might be preparing for our after-life?" Kris quotes from the Sufi poet, Rumi: "Enough of phrases, conceits and metaphors. I want burning! Burning. To become familiar with burning. Light up a fire of Love in your soul. Burn all thought and expressions away." And as Ramadan approaches, Kris introduced a special guest to us this morning, Silma Ihram - a leader from Adelaide's Islamic Community: Mother and Grandmother extraordinaire, pioneer Islamic Teacher, Educator, Principal, Educational Consultant, vice-President of the Australian Council for Islamic Education in Schools in 2004, vice-President of the Muslim Women's National Network Australia, Secretary General of the Australian Council for Islamic Education in Schools and most recently President of the Australian Muslim Women's Association. Silma's initial focus was on the Muslim understanding of Jesus - but as her talk progressed, Silma also gave us more general insights into Islam and Islamic beliefs about Mary (Maryam) and other figures from the Abrahamic Faiths. Her talk was followed by questions from Kris and other members of our Church, curious to learn more about Islam. Listen on!

On 9 November 2022, Malaysia held its 15th General Elections. These elections took place within an unprecedentedly open and fragmented political landscape. Instead of the usual two main coalitions contending as frontrunners, Malaysia now has three main coalitions: Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), and Perikatan Nasional (PN). Not one of these coalitions won enough seats to form government, and it was only after much jockeying around that Pakatan Harapan, led by Anwar Ibrahim, was able to cobble together enough support to form the so-called unity government. Joining Dr Natali Pearson on SSEAC Stories, Dr Azmil Tayeb unpacks Malaysia's recent elections and its evershifting political landscape, discussing the return of ethnoreligious political parties, the future of coalition politics and the unexpected voting patterns of young Malaysian voters. Abu Huraira Center is a leading masjid in North York and across the GTA. It has 4 different Islamic schools that operate on the premises 7 days a week! We cannot function and continue our current operation because the school needs to expand in order to accommodate the ever-growing amount of students and families wishing to attend. The school has currently over 300 students on our waitlist and a school like this comes with needs including classrooms, staffing, and educational resources for the students. Please join us on Saturday, July 16th at 3:00PM at the Abu Huraira Center for the first-ever Islamic educational conference and fundraising dinner so all of us can collectively work on ensuring our children and youth have a space that brings a blessed change in their lives!
