Islamic education has historically been dry, unexciting and a means to an end to get our children knowledgeable and informed on our deen. But what can we learn from recent innovators, media and Western programmes for children that utilise more interactive and engagement approaches to teaching and learning? And how can we incorporate these into our materials for better effects? In this episode, host Zainab speak to Lamise, founder of Messenger Magazine about this topic, her inspiring journey and commitment to children's educations and her tips on getting better results and less push back from children as they learn and even get excited about learning.
In today's episode, we're debunking a common myth about teaching Islam to children. There's a widespread belief that children need to fear their teachers to learn effectively, leading many to adopt a strict approach. But is this truly the best method for our children's education? We'll explore what scientific research says about effective learning environments and, more importantly, how our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught the Deen. Join me as I uncover the best practices for teaching our children in a way that fosters love and understanding. . Connect with Me!

Dr. Butch Ware: Is Capitalism Your Religion? Thinking With Your Heart, Finding a Spiritual Guide, The Weaponization of God and the Devil, and More. Welcome back to Podcast Noor, enjoy a live podcast recording with Dr. Butch Ware! This conversation was recorded as part of a live event, our Virtual Ramadan Iftar in April 2023, where we gather hundreds from around the world to share an evening breaking fast and sharing conversation. Dr. Butch Ware is a historian of West African Studies at UC Santa Barbara. His teaching focuses on Islamic thought, anti-slavery movements in West Africa and the African Diaspora. Dr. Ware is also the author of “The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa.” This conversation is very spiritual and there were so many times that I was broken wide open. We get into things like the difference between the mind and the heart, and how to engage your heart as your thinking organ. We talk about how, for a lot of people who claim to be practicing a specific religion or faith tradition, their religion is actually capitalism. We get into how to find your spiritual guides, and I even dare ask the question, “Who do you think the Devil really is?” rather than “what” the Devil is - what is the idea of the devil? What does it actually represent? Dr. Ware talks to us about the weaponization of God, and how sometimes parents use God as a weapon in their toolbox to try to control kids to obey them. In that sentiment, he also talks about his learnings in which he found that there really is no such thing as a “Muslim child”, and you can replace ‘Muslim' with any sort of faith tradition. The power in that message is a really, really important one and one that I benefited from and I think it could do a lot of healing for others. I'm so happy that a lot of you have been sharing with me that you have been enjoying these spiritual conversations because I am very openly on this journey, asking these really big questions. So, here is Dr. Butch Ware. PS, since this was Live, you'll hear me reference the Q&A portion but I did not keep it for this podcast recording because it was too long. Next time I guess you'll just have to be there! Welcome to this episode of Podcast Noor. * Transcripts + Listening: www.ays.media/podcastnoor/butchware *
Abdulrahman Bindamnan spent his childhood studying in Yemen's Islamic schools. He memorized the Qur'an, a book of 77,000 words, and spent countless hours perfecting his Qur'anic pronunciation. Reflecting on this experience from the vantage point as a graduate student in the United States, he argues that too large a proportion of Muslim children fail to receive a secular education, and instead advance the primacy of revelation over reason. What is the current role of education in the Islamist agenda? What effects do such dogmas have in the West?
Kris's "Story for All Ages" today is a story about a wise queen preparing for life beyond her reign. It begs the question - "How are we preparing for our futures? - and - if it is our belief - how we might be preparing for our after-life?" Kris quotes from the Sufi poet, Rumi: "Enough of phrases, conceits and metaphors. I want burning! Burning. To become familiar with burning. Light up a fire of Love in your soul. Burn all thought and expressions away." And as Ramadan approaches, Kris introduced a special guest to us this morning, Silma Ihram - a leader from Adelaide's Islamic Community: Mother and Grandmother extraordinaire, pioneer Islamic Teacher, Educator, Principal, Educational Consultant, vice-President of the Australian Council for Islamic Education in Schools in 2004, vice-President of the Muslim Women's National Network Australia, Secretary General of the Australian Council for Islamic Education in Schools and most recently President of the Australian Muslim Women's Association. Silma's initial focus was on the Muslim understanding of Jesus - but as her talk progressed, Silma also gave us more general insights into Islam and Islamic beliefs about Mary (Maryam) and other figures from the Abrahamic Faiths. Her talk was followed by questions from Kris and other members of our Church, curious to learn more about Islam. Listen on!
Hamzah has traveled an unexpected path from his Episcopalian childhood. Befriending an Indian Muslim classmate in 10th grade, he became enamored of Islam and accepted the faith after months of study. It has remained his true path and he has spent most of his career in Islamic education. Despite the unusual conversion, Hamzah has not rejected his upbringing religiously or educationally, continuing to hold the values of learning and faith. He lives a model of steady progress towards big dreams, even if the path remains unclear. Highlights:· Converting to Islam did not mean rejecting the Christianity of his childhood.· Islam is the newest and final ‘operating system' of the Abrahamic faiths, after Judaism and Christianity. · Investing in the stock market is permitted, as there is risk involved, but the investor must avoid in forbidden products such as alcohol that counter Islamic principles.· Dual enrollment programs allow students in high school to take college courses, helping students to grow beyond the high school's curriculum. · Islamic schools in New England are young but there is community interest in growth.· Hamzah has a passion for teaching literature and poetry.Quotes:“One of the prohibitions in Islam is interest, and so that makes it pretty complicated to exist in the modern world, which is very much an interest-based economy.”“It's long been a dream of mine to have a Muslim boarding school similar to the ones that I was fortunate enough to attend.”“Many of our students sort of sail through and actually change their college environments. They're very proud of their Muslim faith and heritage, and they practice it openly.”“There are enormous resources within the Muslim community, so some of the challenges on the school side is to prove their product is great. I hope the community can step up and support as well.”Social Media links for Hamzah:Website – https://hamzahhenshaw.com/LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/hamzah-henshaw-a13a94215/Twitter – https://twitter.com/MabeChaiBusiness – https://www.hidayahservices.com/Newsletter – https://hamzahhenshaw.substack.com/p/five-before-five-3-escaping-the-velvetSocial Media links for Méli:Talking with God Project – https://www.talkingwithgodproject.orgLinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/melisolomon/Follow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast offers a place to learn about other religions and faith practices. On 9 November 2022, Malaysia held its 15th General Elections. These elections took place within an unprecedentedly open and fragmented political landscape. Instead of the usual two main coalitions contending as frontrunners, Malaysia now has three main coalitions: Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), and Perikatan Nasional (PN). Not one of these coalitions won enough seats to form government, and it was only after much jockeying around that Pakatan Harapan, led by Anwar Ibrahim, was able to cobble together enough support to form the so-called unity government. Joining Dr Natali Pearson on SSEAC Stories, Dr Azmil Tayeb unpacks Malaysia's recent elections and its evershifting political landscape, discussing the return of ethnoreligious political parties, the future of coalition politics and the unexpected voting patterns of young Malaysian voters. This paper will discuss the impact of the case method on three separate cohorts, all in the context of Islamic education. Although a very widely used tool in higher education, the use of the case method is rare in Islamic education, normally being superseded by a traditional didactic or instructive style of teaching, a feature that often extends across most age groups and even into specialised seminary learning. Retrospective observational analysis was conducted on three separate cohorts in the community who were exposed to the case methodology over a period of five years. Three separate areas of growth were seen in the cohorts in varying degrees. Personal growth and mentoring of the individual through the acquisition of key life skills such as critical analysis, public speaking, presentation skills and ability to collaborate with others. Increasing knowledge base of the individual in a wide variety of Islamic and non-Islamic disciplines. Triggers for community action following identification of critical societal issues. Significant areas requiring greater engagement by community leaders were also frequently flagged up such as suppressed atheism, apostasy, child abuse, mental health and ethical practices of Muslims. Above all, the nature of the case method ensured cross-generational as well as cross-gender conversations on major neglected issues affecting Muslims in the UK, ultimately allowing participants to critically evaluate their faith in a safe space without judgement, develop key life skills and study Islam in context of the modern world and tackle major societal issues relevant not only to Muslims, but society as a whole.

The Alwaleed Program team speaks with Dr. Mary Elston, winner of the 2020 Alwaleed Bin Talal Prize for Best Dissertation in Islamic Studies, about her dissertation entitled, "Reviving Turāth: Islamic Education in Modern Egypt." Mary shares her findings about the history of reform at al-Azhar since the 19th century and the contemporary movement to revive “turāth,” or Islamic heritage, through the eyes of Muslim scholars, their students, and the Egyptian state. We also discuss how Mary's combined methodological approach of historical textual analysis and ethnography allowed her to capture the complex lived reality of the Islamic tradition in Egypt today and contribute to the broadening, interdisciplinary nature of Islamic studies.Dr. Mary Elston recently completed her Ph.D. at Harvard University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. In 2020-21, she is a visiting fellow at the Program on Law and Society in the Muslim World at Harvard Law School and at the Center for Middle East Studies at Harvard University.Credits and transcript: islamicstudies.harvard.edu/reviving-tu…odern-egypt

EdTech is one of the biggest areas of growth today, just behind FinTech. We have seen a proliferation of online courses and educational institutes from the likes of Udemy, Coursera and Khan Academy, to even the likes of Bayyinah and Al Maghrib offering their programs and services online. I was delighted to have one of the pioneers and giants of online education in the Islamic world, Shaykh Dr Bilal Phillips as a guest on the Muslim CEO Show. He set up the Islamic Online University way, way back in 2007 (before all the aforementioned!). A true visionary ahead of its time, we discussed leadership, education and growth in what was a very enlightening discussion indeed.
