Our Series this month is "Organizations That Increase Khair," and we kick it off with Sana Imad of Elevate Adolescence. She's written a curriculum for a character education program designed to help tweens and teens build confidence and reach maturity in a developmentally appropriate way, both spiritually and psychologically. Rooted in Islamic principles and the sage example of Imam Ghazali, the program integrates timeless values like integrity, compassion, and self-discipline into practical life skills. Through @girlsrisingstrong and @boys.breakingthru, parents and children can achieve deep understanding and connection. One of my favorite pearls from this episode had to be, "It isn't easy, but it gets easiER." Practice makes perfect, y'all, but we have to be willing to take the first step.Learn more about these programs and how you can bring them to your kitchen tables. Tune in at 6pm EST and share this episode with another mom and maybe with a masjid board member who may find it easier to establish a youth group with a curriculum and support systems ready to go.Links:1. We engage in a conversation with Yvan Karezi, a Kurdish-Australian co-creator and performer in PYT Fairfield's audacious production, regarding the new play Khair. This work honours Middle Eastern mysticism within a modern context, taking place in a struggling hair salon that also serves as a site for mystical healing. The play intricately blends elements of magic, humour, and the supernatural, offering a novel and surprising theatrical experience. - Îvan Karêzi lîstikvanek e Kurd e Australî ye, li Kerkûkê ji dayik bûye. So i was just sifting through some poetry online, and i came across a sherYe qadam qadam balayen, ye sawaad e ku e jaanaa.nWo yahin se laut jaaye jise zindagi ho pyaariNow i had often heard this sher being used in mushairas and other public settings, but never really knew who the author of this famous couplet was. It was Maulana Aamir Usmani. A poet that in my ignorance had never heard of before.Turns out, he was quite the maverick. Schooled from Deoband, even sold kites for a living once, wrote for bollywood, and many such feats. Khair. I finally got to this nazm of his; and what a nazm it is. Such a morning call to everyone who thinks the world was much better before and its just gone to the dogs now. Listen for yourself. If you want to talk, i am aamir@urdudaan.inHappy listening :)

Acclaimed novelist and academic Tabish Khair argues that literature as a distinct mode of thinking can counteract fundamentalism. Literature is a mode of thinking, stories being one of the oldest thinking 'devices' known to humankind. The ways in which literature enables us to think are distinctive and necessary, because of the relationships between its material ('language') and its subject matter ('reality'). Although present in oral literature, these relationships are exposed in their full complexity with the rise of literature as a distinct form of writing. Literature Against Fundamentalism (Oxford UP, 2024) argues that literature enables us to engage with reality in language and language in reality, where both are mutually constitutive, constantly changing, and partly elusive. Tabish Khair defines this mode of engagement as essentially an agnostic one, resistant to simple dogma. Hence, literature can provide an antidote to fundamentalism. Khair argues that reading literature as literature--and not just as material for aesthetic, sociological, political, and other theoretical discourses--is essential for humanity. In the process, he offers a radical re-definition of literature, an illuminating engagement with religion and fundamentalism, a revaluation of the relationship between the sciences and humanities, and, finally, a call to literature as in 'a call to arms'. Tabish Khair is an Indian writer, academic and journalist, born (1966) and educated in the small town of Gaya in Bihar, India. After finishing his MA from Gaya, he completed a PhD at Copenhagen University and a DPhil at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he is now an Associate Professor. He has been a visiting professor or research fellow at various universities and has received Carlsberg, Leverhulme, and other academic grants. Khair is also an internationally published novelist. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Mientras, escuchamos la música de: UMM KULTHUM- Enta Omry; The Zagalah sing in the gardens of Siwa #1 #2 #3;SHARKIAT+ MANIACS- Om el Khair; FATHY SALAMA + KARIMA NAIT- Hinna; WUST EL BALAD- Shams el Nahar; ESMATULLAH ALIZADA.Escuchar audio

A poet has to pen down poems
1)Trump-appointed Judge Dismisses Classified Documents Case?: On July 15th, Judge Cannon issued a ruling dismissing Trump's case on mishandling classified documents, claiming the Special Prosecutor Jack Smith was improperly appointed without Congressional consent. So Mr. Smith's case and evidence are dismissed, regardless of whether Trump actually mishandled highly classified documents. What do you think of this decision?2) Israel Assassinates Hossam Mansoor, A Director of International Charity 'al Khair'?: Al Khair is a UK based international humanitarian relief organization with offices in UK and Turkey. It is the third largest Muslim charity in the UK. Yet one of it's senior managers, Hossam Mansour, was just killed by bomb dropped by IDF warplanes on a warehouse in Al-Mawasi, Gaza, a designated 'safe area'. He is accused by Israel of being a Hamas 'platoon commander'. Is this assassination justified?3)Israeli Bombing on al-Mawasi Camp in 'Safe Zone' in Gaza: On July 13th, the IDF's F-35 fighter jets dropped eight 2000 pound bombs on Al Mawasi refugee camp, an IDF designated 'safe zone' for Gaza refugees fleeing fighting. Israel's PM Netanyahu authorized the attack believing high-ranking Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif was there. Israel did not notify the US government because they feared 'leaks' would allow the Hamas leader to escape. What do you think of all this?4) Trump's Foreign Policy On Ukraine?:Pres. Orban of Hungary, fresh off visits with Zelensky of Ukraine and Putin of Russia, came to the NATO Summit in Washington DC. Afterwards, he flew down to Mar a Lago for a personal briefing with Donald Trump. What did he tell Trump and what will Trump do regarding Ukraine if elected?

Sudan's ongoing crisis gets little attention in western media if in any media at all. Kholood Khair helps us go beyond the sparce headlines to get a better sense of how the daily atrocities are affecting the broader society right now. Kholood is a policy and political analyst, journalist and founding director of Khartoum-based “think-and-do” tank Confluence Advisory. We spoke to her about what it means to be Sudanese in this moment in time, tried to define "statehood" and "nationhood" in the Sudanese context, and explored the fragile relationship between democracy and stability. She explains the repercussions of the capital Khartoum being at the epicenter of destruction and the wider impacts this has had on civil society, education and cultural production. Finally, laying bare her frustration around the fact that very few people are paying attention to Sudan, Kholood underscores the importance of transitional solidarity. ****** ABOUT AFIKRA ****** afikra | عفكرة is a movement to convert passive interest in the Arab world to active intellectual curiosity. We aim to collectively reframe the dominant narrative of the region by exploring the histories and cultures of the region – past, present, and future – through conversations driven by curiosity.

Gayati. Live. Breathe. Sing! Informal singing by Gauri Varma
I have attempted a favourite Punjabi folk song with Sufi tones. A simple rustic woman expresses her deep selfless love for her handsome lover or 'soneya'. She says that she prays daily to God for his wellbeing and wants nothing else. Her lover has given her so much joy that she is filled with gratitude and wants nothing but to live and die at his feet. She wants him to fully enjoy the prime of his life as Time waits for no one in this world. Seeing humanity on every side of the world, and every side of the wall. In this episode Anthony reflects on his visit to the U.S. Mexico border wall as a Palestinian who lives next to the wall when he is at home Bethlehem. As a Palestinian Christian he has had a unique experience sharing his story in the U.S. this year and is working to help people understand what life has been like for him and his family in Palestine. We ask the question, what does peace and justice look like for Palestine? Anthony has also used the English transliteration for his last name, so you may have seen his name spelled "Khair" rather than the Spanish one he uses, "Jeer". On this episode Ariel is joined by returning guest Laura LeDoux about a serious issue, that what you don't know can hurt you. Women's FemTech data can be used against them, this is something you should know about so you can tell your families and friends. Ida Tin coined the term FemTech. She is the Co-Founder of Clue, a women's health tracking app. FemTech has grown to encompass a range of technology-enabled, consumer-centric products and solutions. Other examples of women's healthcare apps are: Nurx (birth control delivery); Khair (tracking your period, pregnancy, speaking to a doctor); Sexual Activity Log and Tracker (this includes birth control information as well as sexual activity); Ease (birth control reminders), and Unified Women's Healthcare. The Griswold versus Connecticut case was the Supreme Court case that first gave women the right to contraception in the United States in 1965, making the prevention by states of the use of contraception by married couples illegal in 1965. https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/381/479/ States that ban abortion are: Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma From: https://www.google.com/search?q=states+that+ban+abortion&rlz=1C1CHZN_enUS1020US1027&oq=states+that+ban+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i512l9.7504j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Interactive map of abortion laws in the U.S.: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/us/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html Some states that have restricted access to contraception funds are: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin, according to the Guttmacher Institute. From: New Research Shows State Restrictions Reduce Contraception Use by Christine Vestal, 9/22/22, Pew Charitable Trusts, https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2022/09/22/new-research-shows-state-restrictions-reduce-contraception-use Megan Kavanaugh, principal research scientist at Guttmacher, said,“Given the increased restrictive climate around abortion in our country, we are anticipating amped-up attacks on contraceptive access, as both of these are efforts that target people's reproductive autonomy and freedom,” she added. Guttmacher's research describes the change in contraceptive use that occurred after Iowa opted out of a Medicaid family planning program in 2017 and set up its own state-funded contraception program, which excluded clinics that provided abortion along with other health services. The study found that the share of patients at publicly funded family planning centres in Iowa who had not recently received contraceptives increased from 32% to 62% over two years. The share of patients not using any contraceptive method increased from 9% to 15%. Roughly 50 million, or 65% of women of reproductive age, 15-49, used some form of contraception from 2015 to 2017, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 1 in 3 low-income people who use contraception rely on Planned Parenthood or other publicly funded clinics to pay for the often-costly pills or devices. Medicaid, which covers about 70 million individuals, is the largest funding source for free contraception. Another federal program, Title X, provides additional funds to roughly 4,000 clinics across the country to support access to contraception. During the Trump administration, those funds were withheld from Planned Parenthood and other clinics that provide abortion. In July, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a reminder to insurance companies that birth control, along with other preventive care, must be covered under the Affordable Care Act at no cost. The agency said the action was part of a Biden administration effort to protect women's access to contraception in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that eliminated the longstanding federal right to abortion. “Under the ACA, you have the right to free birth control — no matter what state you live in,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement. “With abortion care under attack, it is critical that we ensure birth control is accessible nationwide, and that employers and insurers follow the law and provide coverage for it with no additional cost.” From https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2022/09/22/new-research-shows-state-restrictions-reduce-contraception-use What can women do to be proactive with their data privacy and security and their healthcare apps? Protect your data Use enhanced protection, especially if you're in a state that does not protective women's reproductive rights, e.g. Pseudonyms Having sensitive conversations orally instead of over text/email/apps Be aware that deleting data does NOT make it unavailable to law enforcement Don't post personal health conditions on social media Lobby your local lawmakers to enhance data privacy laws at the state level to protect healthcare data shared over apps In extreme cases, move to a state that honours and protects women's reproductive rights. The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is also affected by the Roe decision. "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." From https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-4/ KEY TAKEAWAYS FemTech is something that's at the forefront of technology in general and specifically technology to do with women's health. It provides solutions to improve healthcare for women across a number of female-specific conditions including maternal health, menstrual health, pelvic health, sexual health, fertility, menopause, contraception, other general health conditions that affect women disproportionately such as osteoporosis or cardiovascular disease. It also affects the transgender community as well. There is no Federal protection for women's reproductive rights. The Dobbs Decision has now left that to each individual state. You may have certain rights in ‘x' state and then you move into ‘y' state and now you no longer have those same rights. Health data that's collected by a health provider, like a hospital or doctor's office, is protected by a Federal law called HIPA (Healthcare Information Privacy Act). HIPA doesn't apply to data collected by a healthcare app, for example, that you're using to track your menstrual cycle because you're trying to get or avoid getting pregnant. That data is protected by whatever state law is in effect with regards to data privacy in general. The upsides of FemTech are that it creates apps, and virtual and digital space that improves care delivery with virtual clinics, direct to consumer prescription delivery – including the morning after pill – it enables self-care through tracking diagnostics, it improves diagnostics, it addresses stigmatised topics such as menstrual health, sexual health and pelvic care. It delivers culturally sensitive and tailored care for frequently marginalised communities, it also opens up healthcare and certain types of healthcare that maybe weren't able to be physically present in neglected communities. It's really been a catalyst for positive changes in healthcare. But now, with the collapse of privacy protections after Roe vs Wade we really need to be proactive in making sure we're being vigilant about our own data privacy and security when using FemTech apps and what kinds of conversations we're having over text messages. BEST MOMENTS “Women's health rights have always been important, but they've never been more important than they are now in the wake of the Dobbs Decision.” “If aggressive states can utilise this data in any way to prove that somebody may have intentionally miscarried, then they can file criminal charges against those women.”“There are now cases where women are having defence attorneys in the emergency room with them to protect them if they're having a miscarriage.”“State like Texas don't have any exceptions for rape or incest. It's horrifying.” ABOUT THE GUEST Laura LeDoux, Esq., CIPP/US provides trusted program management and policy guidance in the Information Security space Laura leverages her legal acumen and expertise in information security, data privacy and compliance to help clients achieve their goals while staying compliant with applicable laws and regulations. Amongst the many gifts our Creator has bestowed upon us, the Salat al Istikhara (The Istikhara Prayer) stands among them. The word Istikhara originates from the Arabic root word of Khair, which is an umbrella word connotating all that is good. Istikhara stems from a verb pattern that means ‘to seek that which is good' The term Istikhara means ‘to look for Allah's Guidance, Wisdom, Support, Supervision, Consultation, Goodness, and Blessings.'How to Do Istikhara for Marriage: When a Muslim is confused about how to resolve a matter, he can ask for Allah, the Glorious, to Aid him by reciting the Istikhara prayer. Salat al Istikhara is a powerful tool that God the Most-Merciful, the Compassionate, has given his slaves so that they can seek His Guidance and Wisdom in all matters of life--whether big or small. For instance, one can pray the Istikhara prayer to seek God's advice about whether they should relocate for school or work, if they should accept a marriage proposal, or if they should buy a particular car or house. The Istikhara Prayer is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, that he recommended and performed. Several myths and misconceptions surround the Istikhara Prayer (Salat al Istikhara in Arabic) and many do not have a full understanding of the prayer. How to Pray Istikhara Step By Step: The prayer is performed simply. Whenever one faces a decision, he or she first would need to do their part by researching possible solutions to their quandary. They should put their intellect and rationale to work, assessing the circumstances to their best of ability. One then should seek sound counsel from others that are knowledgeable, wise, trustworthy, and genuine, and who are worthy of consultation on the very issue. One should use his or her God-given intellect to weigh all available options, reflecting and pondering all gathered research and advice to determine the best possible outcome. How to Perform Istikhara: Once one determines how to move forward on the issue, he would then pray 2-units (Rakat) of voluntary prayer, which should not be counted as part of the five obligatory prayers of the day. It's important to note, one should not pray Istikhara until he has chosen the course of action he plans to take regarding the matter. The prayer he performs would be similar to any other traditional prayer. One must make wudu (ablution) in a clean, pure state, dressed appropriately and facing the Qibla (in the direction of Kabah, God's House here on Earth, in modern-day Saudi Arabia). It is always recommended to seek God's Forgiveness and Mercy at the beginning of the prayer, especially if you consistently commit sins.BUY ISLAMIC BOOKS by The Sincere Seeker Collection for Adults & Children on AMAZON:https://www.amazon.com/thesincereseekerFOLLOW The Sincere Seeker on social media to stay up to date

Randa Khair Abbas and Deborah Court's book The Israeli Druze Community in Transition: Between Tradition and Modernity (Cambridge Scholars, 2021) gives voice to the Israeli Druze through in-depth interviews with 120 people, 60 young adults and 60 of their parents' generation. How is this traditional group, bound together through the centuries by their secret religion and strong value system, dealing with modernization? Can their religion, and their very identity, survive the meeting with the modern, technological world? What resources do the young and the not-so-young bring to the task of preserving their community and helping it to flourish as the world changes around them? The people in this text answer these questions through the telling of their stories, in which they express their values, opinions, beliefs and aspirations. The book draws out theoretical, practical, religious and sociological implications from this analysis, in order to shed light on the challenges faced by other traditional societies meeting modernity.
