This paper proposes to delve into the profound legacy of the Akbarian tradition, an intellectual tradition rooted in the works of Ibn ʿArabī, which extensively contemplates the central doctrine of tawḥīd (the oneness of God) and has exerted a lasting influence on subsequent Islamic theological discourse. However, the reception of this tradition within Muslim scholarship has engendered multifarious responses, sparking contentious debates primarily revolving around the perceived incompatibility of distinguishing between the Creator and the created. These ongoing debates have seen scholars either championing Ibn ʿArabī as the "The Greatest Saint" (Shaykh al-Akbar) or denouncing him as a heretic. Within this context, Qāsim Nānotwī, a pivotal figure in the formation of the Deobandi school of thought, emerges as a noteworthy scholar who engages with the Akbarian tradition. His scholarly pursuits are steeped in the kalām tradition, where he seeks to reconcile apparent theological inconsistencies in revealed texts, the Quran and hadith literature, employing the methodology of burhān (demonstrative logical knowledge) while also incorporating a mystical perspective. Nānotwī's writings unveil not only his profound reverence for Ibn ʿArabī but also his intimate familiarity with the conceptual paradigms of the Akbarian tradition. It is this reverence for Ibn ʿArabī that motivates Nānotwī to offer a rejoinder to prevalent misconceptions surrounding the doctrine of waḥdat al-wujūd (oneness of being) and to clarify its differentiation from waḥdat al-mawjūd (oneness of existents). This presentation aims to explore Nānotwī's writings, not only in terms of his comprehension of waḥdat al-wujūd but also in his innovative use of this concept to establish the existence of God, elucidating how all facets of creation are inherently ontologically dependent on their Creator and derive their reality from the Divine existence. As a scholar hailing from the Indian subcontinent during the late Mughal and early British Raj era, this paper endeavours to illuminate the interpretation and integration of the Akbarian tradition within the corpus of Sunni Muslim literature, particularly through the lens of one of the founding figures of the Deoband school of thought.

He acts as an Expert Witness in Clinical Negligence cases, is a CQC Specialist Advisor and sits as a MPTS tribunal member. He has previously been a Director of Medical Education in the NHS and sat on the Greater Manchester Family Justice Board trustee of MediConcern, a charity that provided health education and promotion to patients from ethnic minorities. He is also a former Trustee of ChildConcern, who provide education and training for professionals concerned with Childcare Law. He has authored papers on psychosis, mental health and parenting and given lectures on topics such as diagnosing mental illness, depression in the South Asian culture, personality assessment, stigma of mental disorders and giving evidence in Court. In this episode I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Shahzad Younas the founder and CEO of Muzmatch. Shazad is a fellow northerner so we hit it off straight away and had a great conversation about his Muslim dating site. Shazad got the idea for Muzmatch whilst in a career of trading and has since grown the company exponentially into millions of users and tens of thousands of successful relationships and marriages all around the globe.    Shazad talks us through his fundraising and recruitment as well as what it’s like to run a Technology company and gaining an absolutely huge user base.   I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it.

In episode 39, we go over feedback from the previous episode, and also ratings and Yeses. In episode 40, we cover Nos and Hold Your Horses. Fred’s Pics! Like the last episode, the images were chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We let Fred’s pics do the talking for us! We have a supersized amount of pics for this episode, divided between this episode and last week’s episode 40, with a few pics in episode 39. These pictures cover the second half of the episode. What we thought about Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2… After a week, I still love the episode, but I am more sensitive to its flaws and maybe it’s not quite as good as I originally thought. Why couldn’t they beam out Cornwell? Why would Control break down after Leland is neutralized? For that matter, why didn’t Control go after Burnham? How was Ash able to be on the Chancellor’s ship, leading the fight? How did the Kelpiens go from their primitive state to piloting fighters in such a short time? These are all nitpicks to me, though, and don’t affect my ultimate rating, at least that much. Ford Pinto! A couple of things I mentioned in the episode were the Ford Pinto and the AVE Mizar. But one thing I didn’t realize about the AVE Mizar during the recording was that the inventors of the “roadable aircraft” were killed in a test flight. I don’t feel so great about making fun of it anymore, because of knowing those unfortunate circumstances. That’s it for Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2! We are taking a well-deserved hiatus. We plan to be back sometime in June. At that time, we plan to do a Season 2 roundtable episode. We’ll cover other feedback we haven’t had a chance to answer yet, and any other feedback we get on these last three episodes after that.
