Nos 50 anos da independência de Cabo Verde, a RFI publica e difunde várias reportagens sobre este tema. Neste terceiro episódio, fomos à procura de antigos combatentes que agarraram nas armas na Guiné para obter a independência dos dois territórios: Guiné e Cabo Verde. As armas, as formações, as viagens, as frentes de batalha e os momentos históricos decisivos, como a tomada de Guilege, são aqui contados por Pedro Pires, Silvino da Luz, Osvaldo Lopes da Silva e Amâncio Lopes. A 5 de Julho de 1975, no Estádio da Várzea, na cidade da Praia, era hasteada a primeira bandeira de Cabo Verde. O país obtinha a sua independência, sem ter tido luta armada nas suas ilhas. Houve planos para o fazer, mas acabaram por não se concretizar, o que levou os cabo-verdianos a agarrarem em armas e a irem lutar pela independência nacional a partir do continente africano, contribuindo também para a libertação do povo guineense. O combate foi liderado por Amílcar Cabral, sob a bandeira da “unidade e luta”, no seio do PAIGC, o Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde. Foi esta aliança que se revelou determinante para escrever a história contemporânea de Cabo Verde, considera o comandante e destacado dirigente político-militar do PAIGC, Pedro Pires, lembrando, por exemplo, o papel decisivo dos artilheiros cabo-verdianos nas matas da Guiné. “Sem o PAIGC ou sem essa aliança entre Guiné e Cabo Verde, a independência de Cabo Verde seria complicada. Isso, em certa medida, permitiu as vitórias ou a vitória final, se quiser dizer isso, na Guiné. A introdução dos artilheiros cabo-verdianos acrescentaram um pouco, melhoraram a capacidade da artilharia que era a arma que fustigava mais os quartéis e podia destruir os quartéis. Essa chegada e introdução dos artilheiros cabo-verdianos foi um factor de mudança. Um factor de mudança favorável à melhoria das capacidades das Forças Armadas do PAIGC”, testemunha Pedro Pires. A guerra na Guiné tinha começado em 1963. Nesse ano, esboça-se um projecto para desencadear também a luta armada em Cabo Verde, mas perante a suspensão do desembarque de guerrilheiros treinados em Cuba e depois de mais formação militar na antiga União Soviética, os cabo-verdianos entram realmente em cena na Guiné em 1969 e vários participam na tomada de Madina do Boé. O comandante de artilharia Osvaldo Lopes da Silva considera que “o quadro se altera completamente” com a entrada da artilharia nas mãos dos cabo-verdianos. Ele estava a estudar na Universidade de Coimbra, quando, em 1961, juntamente com Pedro Pires e tantos outros, fugiu de Portugal para se ir juntar a Amílcar Cabral e à luta independentista. Continuou os estudos em Moscovo e ingressou na luta armada como comandante de artilharia, depois de se ter formado em manejo de mísseis terra-terra GRAD. “Um guerrilheiro podia facilmente transportar o tripé, um outro transportava o tubo e mesmo o míssil era decomposto: a parte explosiva e a parte propulsora. Até 1968, a manobra da parte inimiga foi ocupar o terreno, ou seja, dispersou as suas forças e a missão principal do dispositivo português era garantir os quartéis. Já com o general Spínola, um militar mais evoluído, ele cria forças de intervenção. Já não era só a defesa dos quartéis, mas forças que tentaram recuperar o terreno. É nessa altura que foi importante a presença de mísseis para neutralizar a acção do Spínola, com grande utilização de helicópteros, maior mobilidade, mas o quadro alterou-se completamente com a entrada da artilharia já nas mãos dos cabo-verdianos”, conta Osvaldo Lopes da Silva. O governador António de Spínola tinha entrado na Guiné em fins de Maio de 1968 para conter o avanço do PAIGC e, de facto, dificultou muito as coisas. O PAIGC estava numa fase de desgaste militar e psicológico, algo que se vai arrastar até ao assassínio do seu líder, Amílcar Cabral, em Janeiro de 1973. Spínola utiliza meios militares e psico-sociais, consegue um aumento do efectivo militar e acentua a africanização da tropa com a incorporação de elementos guineenses nas fileiras do exército português. Além disso, acentuou as manobras de acção psicológica contra os guerrilheiros e a população ao contra-atacar a aceitação do PAIGC junto da população com o plano que chamou “Por uma Guiné melhor” e que consistiu em tentar conquistar o apoio dos habitantes com postos sanitários, escolas, apoio aos camponeses, Congressos do Povo, etc. Amâncio Lopes fez parte do grupo de 31 cabo-verdianos formado em Cuba, entre 1967/68, para um desembarque em Cabo Verde, mas perante o adiamento do projecto, acaba por ir para a União Soviética formar-se em artilharia e vai participar na luta armada na Guiné. Ele recorda-se do poder dissuasivo dos mísseis GRAD soviéticos e sublinha que o objectivo era levar o seu compromisso até ao fim, sabendo que o contributo na Guiné seria também para a libertação de Cabo Verde. “Cabral dizia: ‘Nós vamos utilizar essa arma para demonstrar ao inimigo que podemos fazer mal, mas não vamos fazer mal porque os portugueses estão no meio da nossa população e se procurarmos fazer mal aos portugueses vamos fazer mal também à nossa população'. Para ver o conceito do homem, o pensador, o dirigente, ele dizia: ‘Nós vamos tomar a nossa terra e ser nação com a nossa gente e, portanto, não vamos destruir a nossa gente”, conta Amâncio Lopes. Questionado sobre se não era estranho estar a combater em solo estrangeiro pela independência de Cabo Verde, o combatente responde que depois de ter sido mobilizado na emigração e de ter perdido o estatuto de emigrante, tinha de cumprir o “compromisso até ao fim” e que esteve na Guiné “por convicção, não por valentia”. Por maior que seja a convicção, a guerra deixa marcas para sempre. O comandante Silvino da Luz não esquece os horrores da luta armada. Por exemplo, na sua primeira missão na Guiné, em que foi “encarregado de continuar o fustigamento à volta do quartel de Madina Boé”, viu três companheiros “amputados para vida” num terreno minado. Noutra altura, viu um camarada morrer ao ser atingido por uma bala na cabeça mesmo ao seu lado… Arriscar a vida era o preço a pagar para ver Cabo Verde e a Guiné livres do jugo colonial. A chegada dos cabo-verdianos correspondeu à passagem da luta armada “a uma fase superior” na Guiné, considera também Silvino da Luz, que tinha tido formação em guerrilha na Argélia, depois nova preparação na China e, em 1966, foi incluído no grupo de cabo-verdianos que em Cuba se preparou para um eventual desembarque em Cabo Verde. Conta que, depois, continuou formação militar na antiga União Soviética e entrou na Guiné. “Entrámos na luta armada para a passagem da luta na Guiné a uma fase superior que viria a terminar com o que originou grandemente o afastamento de Spínola, o governador da Guiné. Caíram três campos fortificados em operações dirigidas na artilharia por cabo-verdianos. Os portugueses chamam a isso “os três G”: Guilege, Gadamael e Guidage”, acrescenta Silvino da Luz. Guilege foi determinante na história da luta de libertação, confirma Osvaldo Lopes da Silva. Ele tinha frequentado um curso de marinha para uma tripulação de cabo-verdianos na Escola Naval de Odessa. Depois, liderou um grupo de militantes na Marinha Nacional Popular que aí se sentiram hostilizados por elementos guineenses e o projecto de formar uma marinha de guerra com cabo-verdianos não se concretizou. O grupo foi disperso e Osvaldo Lopes da Silva confrontou o secretário-geral do PAIGC, Amílcar Cabral, sobre o que pretendia fazer relativamente a Cabo Verde. “Esse grupo que veio já não foi utilizado na Marinha. Fomos dispersos e eu era um quadro qualificado da artilharia e Cabral põe-me o problema: ‘Tu, o que é que queres, ao fim e ao cabo?' E eu digo: ‘Eu quero é regressar ao mato, não quero ficar em Conacri. Para mim é a artilharia, se não é possível trabalhar na Marinha e a Marinha como está não é possível.' Ele traz o mapa e diz: “Estás a ver esse quartel? Esse é o quartel mais fortificado da Guiné.' Eu digo que ‘sou capaz de destruir qualquer quartel que ele me indicar.' E ele: ‘Podes destruir Guilege? É mesmo fortificado, é rodeado por uma mata densa'. Eu disse: ‘Posso destruir. Desde que eu tenha tempo e meios suficientes, eu destruo', afirma. Osvaldo Lopes da Silva sublinha que depois de Guilege “surge o movimento do 25 de Abril porque havia a ameaça de derrocada militar”. A tomada de Guilege, em Maio de 1973, foi realmente um momento decisivo graças à utilização de misseis antiaéreos portáteis Strella 2. No fundo, ditaram o fim da supremacia aérea das Forças Armadas Portuguesas, resume Pedro Pires, responsável pela logística da operação, sublinhando que outro momento importante no conflito armado foi a visita do Comité de Descolonização da ONU às regiões libertadas, em Abril de 1972.  “Um sucesso político extraordinário, num quadro de guerra, em que o próprio sucesso foi uma operaçao mais ou menos militar foi a missão das Nações Unidas à Guiné em Abril de 1972. Ao realizar ou permitir a realização dessa missão com sucesso, abriram-se possibilidades políticas enormes”, descreve Pedro Pires que, entre 1968 e 1974, esteve integrado nas estruturas político-militares do PAIGC, na frente da Guiné, e exerceu elevadas responsabilidades nos planos político e militar, como membro do Comité Executivo da Luta e do Conselho de Guerra e como Comandante de Região Militar. “A possibilidade militar que veio facilitar tudo isso começou quando pudemos utilizar os mísseis antiaéreos portáteis Strella 2. Isso teria sido o momento decisivo de facto, em Abril, Maio de 1973. Foi o momento decisivo em que as nossas forças abateram três ou quatro aviões MiG, os melhores que a aviação portuguesa possuía na Guiné. E dos momentos mais terríveis para as Forças Armadas Portuguesas foi quando foi derrubado o avião do chefe de Estado-Maior da aviação ou comandante da aviação militar na Guiné. A mudança que teve lugar é a seguinte: se antes era lançar o ataque e fugir para não ser surpreendido pela aviação, a partir daí passámos a lançar o ataque e a permanecer porque a aviação já não tinha capacidade para liquidar ou provocar baixas às nossas forças. E os aviadores passaram a ter medo da arma. O aviador tinha medo da arma, os pilotos de helicóptero tinham medo da arma, era impossível fazer a evacuação de feridos de helicóptero. A situação ficou complicada porque limitou grandemente, ou de sobremaneira, a mobilidade e a capacidade aérea das Forças Armadas Portuguesas”, acrescenta o comandante que viria a ser Presidente de Cabo Verde entre 2001 e 2011. Esta foi uma importante vitória política e militar, pouco tempo depois do assassínio de Amílcar Cabral, a 20 de Janeiro de 1973, em Conacri. Em Fevereiro de 1973, os membros do Conselho Executivo da Luta e do Conselho Superior da Luta do PAIGC tinham intensificado a luta armada em todas as frentes e avançado com a Operação Amílcar Cabral, tendo justamente um dos momentos culminantes sido a tomada de Guilege, em Maio de 1973, e a proclamação unilateral da independência da Guiné-Bissau, a 24 de Setembro de 1973. Embalado pelas vitórias de 1973, o PAIGC sabia que tinha conseguido o fim do domínio aéreo e da liberdade de acção portuguesas. Marcello Caetano não aceitava qualquer cedência política e deu ordens para “resistir até à exaustão de meios”, o que levaria à Revolução dos Cravos. Para Amâncio Lopes, a melhor missão foi a 25 de Abril de 1974. “Para mim, a maior missão que eu tive na Guiné foi o 25 de Abril porque fomos lá com GRAD, nessa altura já fazíamos missão durante o dia porque já tínhamos recebido os Strella. Eram 11 horas, lembro-me. Quando voltávamos, recebemos a notícia que os portugueses tinham dado golpe de Estado. Isso não nos disse nada porque com os portugueses ninguém fazia cálculo de nada, mas tivemos mais ou menos uma percepção porque foi dado um golpe de Estado. Enquanto a guerra está andando, o combatente, principalmente o artilheiro, não tem percepção de qual é a melhor missão, pode considerar a missão que fez mais estragos, mas não prevê o fim. Por isso, a melhor missão é aquela que é feita no fim”, conclui Amâncio Lopes.   Esse “fim” seria o início da abertura das negociações para a independência de Cabo Verde que resultaria na proclamação da “República de Cabo Verde como Nação Independente e Soberana”, a 5 de Julho de 1975.   Pode ouvir aqui as entrevistas integrais feitas aos diferentes convidados.

I recognized her immediately, my friend had introduced us before but she didn't recognize me because I was wearing a helmet. She said she would only need about 15 minutes, then I could bring her back. I agreed, mainly because she stopped me in an area known for prostitution. So I was curious. When we got to Madina, she went straight into a parked car. Curious, I moved closer and was shocked to see her having sex with someone in the car. I tried calling my friend, but he didn't answer. Afterward, she asked me to take her back to where I picked her up. Once we got there, I removed my helmet. She recognized me and immediately started begging me not to tell my friend. She even offered me money, but I refused and left. Now, my friend has asked me to go with him to her hometown to ask for her hand in marriage. I don't know how to tell him what I saw without hurting him.

Skin-lightening is a multi-billion-dollar industry and impacts many women, and men, around the world. Within the African context, women in Nigeria use skin-whitening products the most: according to the World Health Organization 77% of women use them regularly. The situation is so bad that Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (Nafdac) declared a state of emergency in 2023. Madina shares her story, and talks us through the cultural context of why people use these products.
