In our season three finale episode, we are joined by Sahar Kausar, a technical director at Disney Television Animation. Sahar attended the University of Florida and received a dual Bachelor of Science in computer science engineering and digital arts, as well as two art minors in studio arts and fine arts. She then completed a master's in entertainment technology at Carnegie Mellon University. After graduating, Sahar worked at Walt Disney Imagineering as a technical animator and animatronics programmer, then at Walt Disney Animation Studios as a character technical director. Some of her notable projects include Encanto, WISH, Baymax!, and Tokyo Disneyland: Enchanted Tale of Beauty & the Beast. Now, Sahar is a technical director at Disney Television Animation and is currently part of the team for Monsters at Work on Disney+. In this conversation, Sahar tells us how she merges her passion for art and engineering through her career. Fatimah Asghar shows us the many faces of sisterhood when tested by the constant waves of grief and neglect in their debut novel When We Were Sisters. Kausar, Alisha, and Noreen are suddenly orphans after the murder of their father and the death of their mother years prior. Their uncle takes the girls away from the only home they've ever known and forces them to grow up in a run-down apartment abandoned for weeks and sometimes without food and adult supervision. We mark the end of our second literary year with our interview with Fatimah as they speak about the creative format of centering this story around the girls, while leaving the adults nameless and, at times, redacted. They also share what it was like to approach this story of grief during the early years of lockdowns and what it means to give one's self the permission to create beyond the limitations of others.

She leverages her hybrid background in both art and computer science engineering to develop immersive experiences while infusing art and storytelling. The construction industry has long functioned on the basis that waste is an inevitable byproduct of doing business. With up to 30 percent of all materials delivered to construction sites ultimately ending up in landfill, there is an incredible opportunity to not only to recycle more construction waste, but to repurpose perfectly good materials to address socioeconomic inequalities. Today, we are joined by Kausar Khan, Carin de Beer, and Jaco Kemp from Arup in South Africa, who are working to do just that. Their DigiYard project is an app-based service connecting unused construction site materials and waste with small-scale builders and traders in the informal sector, aiming to match supply and demand through embedding circular economy practices within the construction sector and provide access to affordable, quality material to low-income communities. In this episode, we discuss the challenges they face and the lessons they have learned as they pilot this project. We touch on how they have used Whatsapp in the pilot phase, their personal motivations for the project, and the scale of the construction waste problem in South Africa, as well as the financial and social responsibility incentives that DigiYard offers companies in various sectors, including the film industry. Kausar Mohammed is a half Bengali, half Pakistani writer, actress, and comedian born in San Jose, California. She is a writer/performer in the distinguished all-South Asian comedy troupe, The Get Brown, and in the 2021 CBS Diversity Showcase. She has worked on and written a variety of award-winning digital projects, such as "Smyle" and "Namaste" featured on Huffington Post, NBC, and Al-Jazeera. Kausar plays series lead in Paul Feig's (“Bridesmaids”) dramedy, “East of La Brea”. She also has worked alongside Taraji P. Henson on the film “What Men Want” (Paramount), Issa Rae on the film “Little” (Universal), and has additional credits on shows such as “Silicon Valley” (HBO), “Black Lightning” (CW), and “Carol’s Second Act” (CBS).  Kausar also voices series lead characters on both Spielberg’s upcoming Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and the hit anime show, Great Pretender. She also is the co-founder of SHIFT, a racial justice and gender justice consulting group created by all women of color. When Dubai resident Kausar recalls the city she grew up in, she thinks of a Delhi that is confined to a corner today; a Delhi that is filled with architectures, dialects, mannerisms, traditions and charm that is almost lost today. Many lovingly refer to this Delhi as Purani Dilli. To hold on to her memories, she pens down nostalgia dripping love letters about the good old days in Old Delhi. Her Canada based brother, who equally misses their childhood city, narrates these letters into audio stories for a Shahjahanabad-based engineer to turn into podcasts about Old Delhi.

In this Season 1 - Episode 4- Gulbano Ki Shaadi - Old Delhi Podcast (In collaboration with The Might of Pen) Afsha Kausar has written a beautiful story about one of her childhood incidents which is interesting and gives a moral at the end. Narrated by Ahmer Ammar in pure urdu the story starts from the place where Kausar is remembering her childhood summer vacations during which she went to her maternal home in Deoband as she didn't have any nearby relatives in her old Delhi. During one such vacation, she went to the Meena Bazaar in Deoband city along with her aunt, where she bought a plastic doll. Kauser adopted the doll as her child and her younger sister became the doll's aunt. Then she remembers her maternal uncle who was very humble in nature and it was probably he who must have given the idea of the wedding of the doll to another doll. Kauser then again went to Meena bazaar where she bought another doll for wedding, which was adopted by a girl named Sadaf, who lived in the maternal home of kauser. Then both the dolls were given the name Gulbano and Gulfaam respectively. Later on, the wedding date was finalized and cards were distributed to the relatives for the first time in their family and whole house went into the preparation of the wedding. The writer then remembers how she accepted the initiative that after the wedding both the dolls would live in her house in Delhi 6 or she wouldn't allow the wedding to take place at all. Just after the wedding the summer vacations also ended and Kauser came back to her city of Shahjahanabad with both the dolls. Meanwhile, in few days Gulfaam generated a defect in his eye which ended him in getting negligence from Kauser and her sister. In the end, Kauser was a struct with the fact that it was the phenomenon that “son in law who stays in her wife's home is never treated well" was the reason why Gulfaam was never cared about. This story is a true example of the ill value we get from our society that those husbands who live in the houses of their wives families didn't have any respect.

Crazy birds, without any further ado, I would like to welcome, Rukhsana Kausar. Episode Highlights[01:50] How did Rukhsana’s journey started. [02:57] The thought was that perhaps I would go and join Greenpeace and get arrested, you know by protesting or like tie myself to trees. [04:42] I find that you know as a result of increased awareness about the issues surrounding plastic pollution there is a drive towards looking at alternative solutions. [05:54] What has helped even more recently are the global trends, so you have had very successful programs, such as Blue Planet. [08:26] I think we do seem to have this warped sense of what convenience is. [08:58] It is more convenient to actually have access to water all the time. [09:53] The filters last 12 months, so no one is inconvenienced every couple of months by someone coming into their homes and changing filters. [10:02] We do try to make things as hassle-free as possible to make that change as easy as possible. [10:54] The starting point is for us to understand what the drinking water needs and requirements are, what the current costs are and then we look at the cost of implementing the filter drinking water systems and then the ongoing running costs. [13:30] When we have done the taste test at some of our events, the majority of people do seem to prefer the filtered water. [16:22] The filters are really designed so to remove impurities like any sediment particles that are in the water and chemicals like chlorine. [20:56] Shower filters will not stop your hair from falling out. Hair loss is more complex than that. It depends on diet, stress if you are on certain medication where a side effect might be hair loss, your hormones, so there are lots of other contributory factors to hair loss. [21:25] By removing the chemicals like chlorine from the shower water, you are also reducing the exposure that your skin has to chemicals because your skin is the largest organ in your body. [27:34] Every time we buy something we are casting a vote for the place that or society that we want to live in and over the last eight years I have not bought a plastic water bottle.   Final Five1.What is one social media platform that you follow? Water is obviously something that we all need to have access to and there is still too much of a heavy reliance on plastic bottled water especially if you are living in cities or towns where you do have access to drinking water from your tap and it is relatively easy enough buy a filter and invest in a filter and in the long run it is going to save you money as well.  4.What is one sustainability fact that you like to use in a room with people not yet on a sustainability journey?  8.3 billion tons of plastic have been manufactured since the 1950’s. If you think that less than 10% of plastic globally have been recycled that is billions of tons. Some of it is still in circulation and we are still using some of them, but much of that plastic have ended up in the landfill and it has ended up in the oceans.  5.Where can people find you?...
