Today on Mea Culpa, I'm joined by one of my favorite recurring guests, Harry Litman, former U.S. Attorney, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, law professor, and host of Talking Feds. From bypassing Congress to impose sweeping tariffs to openly defying Supreme Court rulings on immigration, Harry explains how Trump continues to push the boundaries of executive authority. We also unpack Chief Justice Roberts' rare public rebuke, the looming threat of trade wars, and the authoritarian use of executive orders. Plus, we break down the chaos surrounding the FAA's leadership vacuum and what it reveals about Trump's hollowing out of critical government institutions. Today on Mea Culpa, I'm joined by my friend Harry Litman, former U.S. Attorney, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, law professor, and host of Talking Feds, to break down the constitutional crisis unfolding before our eyes. From the government's refusal to comply with a Supreme Court order in the Abrego Garcia deportation case to Trump's threats to dismantle independent institutions, Harry warns we're entering dangerous, uncharted territory. Together, we expose how Trump's enablers are weaponizing the law, eroding judicial authority, and targeting critics, turning political vengeance into official policy. We critique Trump's authoritarian agenda, including mass deportation plans, the creation of controversial new departments, and executive orders that undermine democratic institutions. Join me and Harry Litman on today's episode of Mea Culpa. Litman, a former U.S. Attorney, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, law professor, and legal commentator, is also the creator and host of the Talking Feds podcast. We dive into Trump's authoritarian tactics, his divisive rhetoric, and how these influence public opinion leading up to the election. Litman highlights Trump's appeal to the religious right and his strategy of framing the election as a loyalty test for groups like Jews and evangelicals. Together, we examine Trump's use of dehumanizing language, conspiracy theories, and inflammatory remarks on mass deportations to mobilize his base. With only five days until the election, we discuss the risks of potential violence and emphasize the critical importance of strong voter turnout to protect democratic values. I'm always honored when Lisa Graves joins me to lend her legal expertise to the discussion about the trials and tribulations of TFG and, of course, the machinations of the once Supreme, now Extreme, Court. Lisa has the bona fides... she served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Policy Development/Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorneys General Janet Reno and John Ashcroft, Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. She also worked as the Senior Legislative Strategist for the ACLU on national security and civil liberties, and held other posts. Although Lisa generously shares her knowledge with us on this show, she does so in her capacity as a private citizen. These days, her day job is as the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that works with journalists and other researchers to shine a bright light on the dark money fueling regressive agendas targeting vital institutions in our republic, such as our courts and public schools. Graves is one of the nation's foremost experts in exposing how special interests distort public policy and try to thwart the public's interest in a thriving and inclusive democracy and to impede measures to protect our environment and mitigate climate change. I don't run through her CV and experience as often as I should when she's on the show, so I wanted to put it down in writing... Today, Lisa joins me to talk about the beginning of the first-ever criminal trial of a former president, about that former guy's inability to follow the most basic rules of decorum inside a court of law (or anywhere else for that matter), David Pecker's testimony that proves Trump talks about himself when he decries "FAKE NEWS" and more. On the SCOTUS front, tomorrow - the final day they'll hear arguments this term - they'll hear Trump's farce of a claim that he enjoys "absolute immunity" as a former president... of course today, the antediluvian men on the court showed that they believe they should control every aspect of a woman's life, including her health care. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
Lisa Graves is the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that exposes the shadowy machinations of dark money funders like Leonard Leo, Barre Seid, Harlan Crow, Charles Koch, Dick Uihlein, and Rob Arkley, and their front groups. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more. She also launched the award-winning ALECexposed.org investigation, KochDocs, and other projects. Her op-eds have run in the most prominent newspapers and magazines in the country, and she is a frequent guest on MSNBC. From 2009-2017, she led the Center for Media and Democracy. In this discussion with Greg Olear, Graves discusses her work with True North Research, how she shares an alma mater with one of the most notorious dark money maestros, all the stuff that went on during Brett Kavanaugh's FIRST confirmation hearing, the failures of the Roberts Court and John Roberts, the Clarence & Ginni Thomas corruption, and more. Well, they sure took their sweet time to stick a dagger in the heart of democracy and now the Supreme Extreme Court is dragging it's feet before it strikes the death blow. Rather than immediately put us out of (or increase our) misery quickly (like they did in Bush v Gore 2000), they're draaagggging it out another six long weeks. Yes, the court will hear TFG's bullshit case where he's claiming "absolute immunity" for his actions related to the January 6 insurrection that he led! It took the court three weeks just to say they would hear the case (also a horrendous decision), and now they're obviously delaying hearing the case. One can only assume it's to help their dear leader, the twice impeached, orange tinted, failed former occupant of the White House. To add insult to injury, Clarence Thomas - who never should have been confirmed in the first place - refuses to recuse himself, despite overwhelming evidence that his wife, Ginni Thomas, not only participated in the planning of the Jan 6 coup attempt, but was a major instigator and funder of the whole mess. To help us understand this and how the laws have been so perverted, LISA GRAVES returns to the show. Lisa is executive director of True North Research, which investigates and exposes those distorting American democracy and public policy. She then went on to helm the Center for Media and Democracy, the group who gave us ALEC Exposed and who took on and publicly exposed the Koch Brothers. Previously, Graves was Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Office of Legal Policy/Policy Development and served as Chief Counsel for Nominations for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee for Senator Patrick Leahy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
In their 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday that former President Trump cannot be removed from Colorado's state ballot—or any state ballot for that matter. The High Court unanimously agreed that the 14th Amendment gave states no powers for an “insurrectionist ban” and that states cannot bar candidates from running for federal offices. Former President Trump celebrated the decision on social media, calling it a “big win for America.” University of California at Berkeley Law Professor and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, John Yoo, joins the podcast to discuss how the Court came to this decision, their expected ruling on presidential immunity, and its implications for the 2024 presidential race. I tried to keep the title of today's episode light, though I'm feeling anything but. Yes, I was glad to hear that TFG was compelled to testify today, but it was more of the same from this teflon turd who gets away with crap that would find anyone else displaying the same juvenile lack of decorum bound and gagged at the defendant's table. But he does and says what he wants without a care in the world because he knows, as he's stated more than once, he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and get away with it.Trump did make history today, I believe, in that he is the first former Oval Office occupant to stand trial - civil or criminal (and face it, he's got both in the works). And today, history was made, as embarrassing as it is for this country. But we have lots to be ashamed of right now, with more gumming up the works further each day.The always awesome Lisa Graves is back on the show today, sharing her personal observations on this historic day. There's a parade of legal *experts* being trotted out by every cable news channel blaring their skewed take on the days' news endlessly. But I'd listen to Lisa Graves above all others. She's the real deal.Lisa is a DOJ veteran, having served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in both the Bill Clinton and GW Bush administrations under AGs Janet Reno and John Ashcroft/ Alberto Gonzales. She also served in the Senate Judiciary Committee as Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy, as Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. She also worked as the Senior Legislative Strategist for the ACLU on national security and civil liberties, and held other posts. These days, Lisa Graves works as the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that works with journalists and other researchers to shine a bright light on the dark money fueling regressive agendas targeting vital institutions in our republic, such as our courts and public schools.Today, she'll bring us her personal observations on today's testimony and the sad historic nature of where we are as a nation.

Well, now we know that imminent can mean eventually! Fani Willis said charges against the former guy were imminent way back in January. But last night, right around 8pm ET, the Grand Jury filed back into the Fulton County courtroom and handed the judge the indictment-- a whopping 98 pages, 41 counts and, in addition to Cheeto Musselini, 18 other defendants and 30 un-indicted co-conspirators.As today is that other Tuesday, GottaLaff is here. And we're joined by the go-to legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, Lisa Graves, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under both Janet Reno and John Ashcroft in the Clinton and W Bush administrations, now founder and director of True North Research. Now that's an indictment panel I'd listen to!

Former President Donald Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury for his role in the January 6th riot at the Capitol and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This is the third criminal indictment the former President is facing, being charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of & attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. Law Professor at the University of California at Berkeley and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, John Yoo, joins the Rundown to explain why this most recent indictment is “by far the most important” in regards to public interest, how difficult it will be for each of the cases against him to be proven in court, and how the former President's upcoming trials will undoubtedly interfere with the 2024 presidential election. Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor tax evasion charges last week. Biden's former business associate, Devon Archer, told oversight committee members that Hunter would routinely introduce his father to foreign business partners and prospective investors. As the case progresses, three GOP chairmen, including House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY), and Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-O), have sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding documents and information regarding circumstances related to Hunter Biden's plea deal with the Justice Department. Congressman Jordan (R-OH) joins the Rundown to discuss why he thinks the DOJ continues to change its story, how he would move forward in impeaching President Biden, and break down the ways the Biden administration has tried to censor the American people. Victoria Toensing, a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Justice Department, discusses the revelations and how a two-tiered justice system culture developed not only within the Department of Justice, but other federal agencies like the IRS.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Supreme Court has approximately eighteen more opinions to announce before the current term ends. The rulings could impact student loan payments, redistricting, and change whether or not businesses are allowed to refuse service based on religious beliefs. Law Professor at the University of California at Berkeley and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General, John Yoo, joins the Rundown to explain how the high court's rulings are already impacting the 2024 election, the legal reasoning for why schools shouldn't base their admissions decisions on race, and later touches upon why he suspects the recent ethical scandals plaguing the Supreme Court justices stem from political bias. One victim, Arizona mother Jennifer Destefano, received a call and heard her daughter sobbing on the other end of the line. She was told her daughter had been kidnapped and would be harmed if a hefty ransom wasn't paid. Later, she would learn her daughter was never truly in danger. Destefano joins the podcast to share her story and explain how the traumatic experience has motivated her to advocate for A.I. regulation on Capitol Hill. Later, Heritage Foundation tech policy research associate Jake Denton joins to discuss what guardrails he believes should be placed on A.I. and how the technology will likely shape the future—for better or for worse.
