In a viral video circulating on X, shoppers in Costco can be seen stocking-up on essentials like toilet paper and bottled water. Will there soon be supply shortages similar to what Americans experienced during Covid-19? 3:10pm- Dockworkers Launch Massive Strike. Paul Berger of The Wall Street Journal writes: “Dockworkers at dozens of U.S. ports are digging in for a massive pay increase, seeking to flex their power in a strike that aims to strangle the flow of trade across much of the country…About 60% of containerized trade moves through the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports where ILA dockworkers last year unloaded about $588 billion of imports, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence…J.P. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (06/28/2024): 3:05pm- On Thursday night, CNN hosted 2024's first presidential debate between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. Who won the debate? The New York Times polled their opinion columnists—and despite progressives greatly outnumbering conservatives, 10 of 12 columnists thought Trump won, with 2 concluding the candidates battled to a draw, and 0 choosing Biden. Similarly, CNN conducted a flash poll which indicated that 67% of debate watchers thought Trump won, with 33% selecting Biden. 3:15pm- Immediately following Thursday's debate, Democrat strategists and left-leaning television anchors began asking whether the party should replace Joe Biden as their presidential candidate given his poor performance and inability to consistently organize his thoughts while answering questions. For example, former Obama Administration Advisor Van Jones told CNN that “there are going to be a lot of people who want [Biden] to consider taking a different course now…That was not what we needed from Joe Biden. It is personally painful for a lot of people.” Could Biden actually be replaced? 3:30pm- Michael Brendan Dougherty of National Review writes: “Instantly last night, the sentence ‘Joe Biden is unfit for office' was transmuted from a right-wing disinformation campaign to liberal conventional wisdom…It was plainly obvious in February, when, after Robert Hur's report came out saying that Biden was an elderly man struggling with memory problems, Biden then came out in a press conference and gave the kind of performance that causes families to put their aging patriarch into the care of an institution…Everyone in elite media and Democratic politics knew that Biden was not really up to the job, and sometimes barely competent.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/06/the-covid-era-echo-chamber-collapsed-on-joe-biden-at-last/ 3:50pm- Recapping last night's debate, John Favreau—Host of Pod Save America & former Barack Obama Speechwriter—called Joe Biden's performance a “disaster.” 4:05pm- In his first appearance since last night's presidential debate, Donald Trump spoke before a crowd in Chesapeake, Virginia. 4:15pm- Media Panic: Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough hilariously butted heads over Joe Biden's debate performance—though, both conceded it was not a good night for the president or the Democrat Party. MSNBC's Joy Reid said that the reaction she has received from Democrat insiders is panic. Similarly, while on NBC News, Chuck Todd explained “there is a full-on panic about this performance, not ‘oh like this is recoverable' it's more of an ‘ok, he's got to step aside.'” 4:20pm- While appearing on MSNBC with Rachel Maddow, former Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe described the situation following Thursday night's debate as a “Defcon 1 moment” for Democrats.   4:40pm- Can Joe Biden be replaced as the Democratic nominee? Philip Elliott and Kohe Ewe explore the possibility in their latest article for Time. They explain: “At present, there is no clear-cut mechanism to replace Biden as the party's nominee—he already won more than enough delegates during the primaries to secure his nomination ahead of the Democrats' national convention in August. Still, there are ways for Democrats to end up with someone other than Biden at the top of the ticket, especially if Biden willingly steps aside—but the timing, and the Democratic National Committee's own regulations, has a lot to do with what's possible, let alone plausible. (Not to mention the challenge of settling on a replacement.)” You can read the full article here: https://time.com/6993607/could-democrats-replace-biden-nominee-explainer/ 5:05pm- During one notable exchange at Thursday's presidential debate on CNN, Joe Biden concluded a statement by saying he had “beaten Medicare.” In response, Donald Trump hilariously noted, “well, he is right. He did beat Medicare. He beat it to death.” 5:10pm- On Thursday night, CNN hosted 2024's first presidential debate between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. 5:15pm- One pre-debate poll measuring national support in the 2024 presidential election had Donald Trump at 41% and Joe Biden at 43%. That same poll now has Trump at 50% and Biden at 42% following CNN's presidential debate. 5:20pm- According to a new, shocking poll out of New Jersey, Donald Trump is now beating Joe Biden by 1% in the Garden State. 5:40pm- Zack Smith—Legal Fellow and Manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in Heritage's Meese Center—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to examine the Supreme Court's landmark decisions in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce. The near identical cases resulted in the upending of precedent established in 1984 by the Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council decision. Today's decision delivers a massive blow to unchecked power held by the administrative state—which will no longer be permitted to ostensibly alter Congressional acts via loose interpretations without judicial checks on that power.    6:05pm- Recapping last night's debate, John Favreau—Host of Pod Save America & former Barack Obama Speechwriter—called Joe Biden's performance a “disaster.” 6:10pm- During one notable exchange at Thursday's presidential debate on CNN, Joe Biden concluded a statement by saying he had “beaten Medicare.” In response, Donald Trump hilariously noted, “well, he is right. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/17/2024): 3:05pm- Kristen Pieffer of the Freedonia Group documents the results of a brand-new study on the impact of New Jersey's ban on single-use plastic bags. She writes: “following implementation of the New Jersey bag ban, total bag volumes declined by more than 60% to 894 million bags. However, the study also shows, following New Jersey's ban of single-use bags, the shift from plastic film to alternative bags resulted in a nearly 3x increase in plastic consumption for bags. At the same time, 6x more woven and non-woven polypropylene plastic was consumed to produce the reusable bags sold to consumers as an alternative. Most of these alternative bags are made with non-woven polypropylene, which is not widely recycled in the United States and does not typically contain any post-consumer recycled materials. This shift in material also resulted in a notable environmental impact, with the increased consumption of polypropylene bags contributing to a 500% increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to non-woven polypropylene bag production in 2015. Notably, non-woven polypropylene, NWPP, the dominant alternative bag material, consumes over 15 times more plastic and generates more than five times the amount of GHG emissions during production per bag than polyethylene plastic bags.” You can read the full report here: https://www.freedoniagroup.com/press-releases/freedonia-report-finds-new-jersey-single-use-bag-ban-boosts-alternative-bag-production,-increases-pl 3:20pm- Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, Argentine President Javier Milei told those in attendance “do not surrender” to socialism and to instead embrace capitalism, free markets, and individual liberties. 3:30pm Why does Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise follow Matt on social media? He was right about China." 3:45pm- While appearing on The View, Vice President Kamala Harris said she was “scared as heck” of Donald Trump and his supporters. 4:05pm- Warren P. Strobel of The Wall Street Journal writes: “Chinese researchers isolated and mapped the virus that causes Covid-19 in late December 2019, at least two weeks before Beijing revealed details of the deadly virus to the world, congressional investigators said, raising questions anew about what China knew in the pandemic's crucial early days. Documents obtained from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services by a House committee and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal show that a Chinese researcher in Beijing uploaded a nearly complete sequence of the virus's structure to a U.S. government-run database on Dec. 28, 2019. Chinese officials at that time were still publicly describing the disease outbreak in Wuhan, China, as a viral pneumonia “of unknown cause” and had yet to close the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, site of one of the initial Covid-19 outbreaks. China only shared the virus's sequence with the World Health Organization on Jan. 11, 2020, according to U.S. government timelines of the pandemic.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/world/china/chinese-lab-mapped-deadly-coronavirus-two-weeks-before-beijing-told-the-world-documents-show-9bca8865 4:10pm- Katherine Donlevy of The New York Post writes: “In a Wuhan-esque study, Chinese scientists are experimenting with a mutant COVID-19 strain that is 100% lethal to ‘humanized' mice. The deadly virus—known as GX_P2V—attacked the brains of mice that were engineered to reflect genetic makeup similar to people, according to a study shared last week out of Beijing.” You can read the full article here: https://nypost.com/2024/01/16/news/covid-19-strain-kills-100-of-infected-mice-in-chinese-lab-study/ 4:30pm- Are you a psychopath? Is Legalizing Marijuana a Mistake?

Open to Debate

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2023 53:15

According to an October 2022 Pew survey, “88% of US adults say that marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use.” While marijuana legalization is gaining more and more cultural acceptance, effectively regulating drugs has long flummoxed policy and lawmakers. Some are even starting to have second thoughts, especially when it comes to how to practically enforce legal sales. In fact, voters in Oklahoma – one of the nation's leading weed markets –overwhelmingly rejected recreational legalization earlier this year, even though voters backed medical marijuana legalization by a double-digit margin in 2018. Those who argue “Yes” for marijuana legalization say legalization creates more problems for our legal system because it requires extra enforcement to crack down on already robust illegal markets to make way for new, regulated, and legal markets. Additionally, competition from illegal weed markets is undercutting legal sales, which means the expected revenue stream from a legalized industry is far lower than expected. Those who argue “No” say legalization can reduce the burden on law enforcement and criminal justice systems, allowing resources to be redirected to more pressing issues. They also highlight marijuana's medical benefits, such as for pain management and treatment of certain health conditions, which have made a difference in people's lives.    With this context, it's time to debate — and reconsider — “Is Legalizing Marijuana A Mistake?”  Arguing Yes: Paul J. Larkin, Jr, Senior Legal Research Fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation and Teresa Haley, senior policy advisor at the Foundation for Drug Policy Solution    Arguing No: Toi Hutchinson, CEO of the Marijuana Policy Project; former member of the Illinois Senate, and Cat Packer, Director of Drug Markets and Legal Regulation at Drug Policy Alliance   Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates Learn more about your ad choices. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/31/2023): 3:05pm- On Thursday evening, news broke that former President Donald Trump would be indicted for his role in allegedly providing hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. Corinne Ramey and Joe Palazzolo of The Wall Street Journal write: “The substance of the charges aren't public for now and are expected to remain sealed until Mr. Trump makes an initial appearance in court, likely on Tuesday afternoon. He is first expected to report to the district attorney's office, where he will be arrested, fingerprinted and photographed.” According to claims made by Trump's attorney, the former president will not accept any plea deal. You can read their full report here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-lawyer-hits-airwaves-to-attack-new-york-indictment-9fb00702?mod=hp_lead_pos1 3:15pm- On Thursday night, in response to news of former President Donald Trump's indictment, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tweeted: “The Grand Jury has acted upon the facts and the law. No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence. Hopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.” In response to Pelosi's preposterous claims of a “trial to prove innocence”, Twitter quickly fact checked the statement, citing Cornell Law School: “Ms. Pelosi mistakenly says that Trump can prove his innocence at trial. Law in the US assumes the innocence of a defendant and the prosecution must prove guilt for a conviction.” 3:25pm Attorney Kate Shaw—Law Professor at Yeshica University & an expert on Constitutional Law—appeared on ABC News and seemingly questioned whether Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has jurisdiction to indict Donald Trump. Two-minutes into the interview, host George Stephanopoulos seemingly cut her off and immediately moved on from what she said. 3:40pm- While appearing on ABC News, Donald Trump's Attorney Joe Tacopina condemned the Manhattan District Attorney's office for bringing politically driven charges against the former president. Tacopina claimed the indictment is based upon “rumors and leaks.” 3:50pm- In his latest editorial for National Review, former Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Andrew C. McCarthy writes: “Alvin Bragg, the elected progressive Democrat who ran for Manhattan district attorney as the candidate most likely to wield his power against Donald Trump, crossed the Rubicon on Thursday… If reports are to be believed, it is not merely an unworthy exercise of prosecutorial discretion. It is one that will threaten the legitimacy of the justice system—on the public acceptance of which the rule of law hinges.” You can read McCarthy's full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2023/03/bragg-crosses-the-rubicon-indicting-trump-on-stormy-daniels-nonsense/ 4:05pm- Zack Smith—Legal fellow and manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in Heritage's Meese Center—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a New York grand jury deciding to charge former President Donald Trump for his alleged involvement in hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election cycle.
