For many, the mental health effects of COVID have lingered even as our world has gotten back to “normal”—or at least the “new normal”—following what seems to be the worst of the COVID pandemic. Some people report just feeling “blah,” like they're simply going through the motions, with little sense of calling, purpose, or passion. So, what's going on here? Shouldn't people be feeling better now that the intensity of the pandemic has lessened somewhat? Why are so many people finding it hard to re-discover a sense of passion or purpose in life? These are some of the questions we grapple with in this episode. Host David B. Feldman speaks with Dr. Diane Dreher, PhD, positive psychology coach and author of several books, including Your Personal Renaissance and The Tao of Inner Peace. (47:05) Combining the Yin of awareness with the Yang of positive action. (48:33) How to connect with Diane Dreher.5 Key Takeaways 1. We can find hope and consolation in nature. Everything in nature is constantly growing and changing. One season leads to another. Being in touch with nature is akin to being in touch with reality. Being in touch with nature reduces anxiety. 2. Throughout Covid-19, we have been in a period of forced yin. A period of forced inactivity. It has forced us to reevaluate our choices and the way we spend our time. We realize that there are habits we don't need to go back to. 3. Lots of people are now Covid nervous because they haven't interacted with people in a long time. Explore your communities, and find simple ways to show up and connect with people. You can even just say hello to people you don't know. 4. We are all unique. Therefore, it is inevitable for us to disagree. In a disagreement, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. There are oftentimes ways to find a shared goal; solutions can be created in unison. You can build thriving relationships when you build upon shared needs.5. It is only when we are centered and self-aware that we can truly learn from other people and be open to what the world has to offer. It's said that if you're not angry, you're not paying attention. And indeed, all you have to do is turn on the news or take a look at social media, and you'll find plenty to be angry about. Or sad about. Or worried, anxious, or fearful. But is this any way to live? Scores of studies have shown that the stress caused by being permanently in these sorts of emotional states can lead to a wide range of health issues – both mental and physical. So surely it's better not to be angry, or sad, or worried, anxious or fearful. But does that mean we're not taking our world, and our place in it, seriously enough? This week week I'm speaking to Diane Dreher about the Tao te Ching and her 1990 book the Tao of Inner Peace, which has just been re-released to bring it up to date with a world that seems more turbulent, more ill at ease, and more divided than ever. And the message is this, the more we can cultivate inner peace, the healthier we can become in mind, body and spirit, the more effective we can be when we step into the world to make a difference. This is a wonderful, inspiring and reassuring conversation. Sometimes I feel very lucky to be able to have such great conversations on this podcast, as they really enrich my experience of life, and this is one such conversation. In today's episode we get to take a mini dive into The Tao Te Ching, or the Way, with my guest Diane Dreher who is the author of several books exploring the principles in the 25 centuries old Tao. The poems in the Tao are more relevant than ever today, as we truly need to embrace peace within ourselves. The spiritual guide that is the Tao helps us find the path to peace by showing us how to integrate the many facets of our everyday lives to create a balanced, dynamic, harmonious whole.Diane has a way of interpreting Lao Tzu's teachings that make the principles accessible and understandable for those of us who are not scholars of this ancient Chinese text. Of course we explore some of the ways to find the "way", and we also giggle and have a real down to earth conversation. If you are enjoying this podcast, please share, comment, like - you know the drill. Sometimes in a relationship – whether family, business, personal, or intimate – we give away our personal power and control of or life. We may not even realize that we are doing it, but we let other people control our life. Sometimes we do it intentionally and other times we don't. That is one of the main topics of the show tonight. First realizing that you are doing it and then, how to take back your power and take back control of your own life in a healthy way. We will also discuss conflict resolution which can definitely arise when you start to take back control of your life. These are both important topics that I'm very happy to bring to you and Diane Dreher is a great guest. We'll also discuss her great collection of books. I included a list of her books below.
