In Episode 29 of A is for Architecture, I speak with Michael Young, founder of Young & Ayata and assistant professor at the The Cooper Union, New York. We speak about Michael's recent book, Reality Modelled After Images: Architecture and Aesthetics after the Digital Image, published this year by Routledge. Its a fine book, very thoughtful, tempered by Michael's dual role as a practitioner-scholar. We speak about aesthetics, and its diminished role in modern architectural practice and discourse, and the way digital images constitute a challenge to current readings of aesthetics, situating them within an historical narrative with roots in the Beaux-Arts architectural tradition. I was introduced to Michael by Fran Ford, Senior Editor and Publisher (Architecture) at Routledge. We have never met IRL. You can see Michael's The Cooper Union profile here, and his practice, Young & Ayata, here. The book is linked above. Oral history interview with Susana Almanza and Sabino "Pio" Renteria from the Activism and the Brown Berets of Austin Project Recordings and Digital Images collection at the Austin History Center (AR.2018.030). This project was first conceived by Gloria Espitia, Mexican American Neighborhood Liaison at the Austin History Center, in 2013, in an effort to educate and promote the importance of preserving and sharing Brown Berets history and relevance throughout Austin's socio-political history. Oral histories were conducted with four former Brown Berets between June and September 2013. In addition, two panel sessions were held and recorded with a total of four former Brown Berets in October 2013. The Austin Brown Berets chapter emerged in 1973 and existed roughly until 1983. According to Paul Hernandez, a Brown Beret president and spokesperson, members viewed themselves as a community driven group, comprised of and representing the working class Chicanos of the barrios, particularly in East Austin. Issues that were important to them included speaking out on police brutality, quality education, racial equity, and, perhaps most famously, fighting to remove environmentally disruptive drag boat races at Festival Beach during the annual Austin Aqua Festival (Aqua Fest). Digital images can be broadly categorized into two kinds: bitmap and vector. In this episode we provide the listener a general understanding of how both bitmap and vector images work. We start with the basics, by explaining pixels, but then we talk about a standard color model, and some specific file formats that most people are familiar with. We finish our discussion by talking about smartphone cameras, image manipulation software, and how images work together to make videos. Note: In this episode we used the term "graphics card" generically. We could have more accurately said Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to include embedded GPUs as exist in most devices. As the number of digital images we accumulate increases, possibly at an alarming rate, finding one specific image becomes challenging. Artificial intelligence can help. In Short Circuits: Device drivers are among the most problematic issues for Windows users, but they're virtually invisible and that makes keeping them up to date difficult. There are applications that can help, but they need to be treated with care. • Although a bad device driver can cause a problem with keyboards, sometimes the keyboard just fails. Microsoft wants more than $100 for their keyboard cover that fits on Surface Pro tablets, but a third-party keyboard for half that price offers a lot of useful features. In Spare Parts (only on the website): Mozilla has begun offering a virtual private network. It's currently limited to Windows computers and both IOS and Android mobile devices in six countries, but more devices and countries are coming. • Two mechanical dogs are wandering around a Ford plant, helping engineers to collect data for a planned retooling. • Twenty years ago: Bluetooth devices were just beginning to be sold. They were expensive and had security flaws. Now it's hard to find a device without Bluetooth built in.

I recently saw an exchange of thoughts on a national dental office manager forum where the large majority of OM's felt their docs should take digital images for free on patients where they could not locate their x-rays, pano's, and other such pictures. IT'S NOT FREE TO THE DOC! Digital radiography is expensive, and there is an associated cost of goods that has a direct financial impact on the practice. It's not a courtesy to give them away for free.Support the show (http://www.mypracticemybusiness.com)
Despite huge successes in issuing over 110 patents and having 250 pending licenses, Leigh Rothschild says his latest venture is the most exciting one yet: Qmage, a free app that will revolutionize the way we interact with digital images. By incorporating audio, video, text files, URL links, and e-commerce links into tens of thousands of digital images, Qmage is allowing anyone with an iOS device or QR code scanner to access it all at with a single click. With applications in the photo, greeting card, automobile, real estate, and retail industries, this technology has the potential to find its way into almost every aspect of our lives. Imagine being able to scan a greeting card and immediately hear audio or watch a video created and uploaded by your loved one, or scanning an image of a house for sale and immediately experiencing a virtual tour or communicating with the realtor. Rothschild also discusses plans to incorporate an augmented reality feature, which would allow users to scan an item of clothing and not only receive all of the associated information, but actually see what it would look like on them, and get suggestions for accessories that might go well with it. The Qmage app is currently in the beta form of development and is expected to be released soon. Learn more at www.qmage.com and reach out to Rothschild at leigh@qmage.com.
Chris Powell, Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, gives a talk for the 2015 DHOXSS. Digital images (photographs) present a significant resource for the Digital Humanities practitioner; individual collections can number in the hundreds of thousands, and can use a variety of encoding methods. These resources can be the result of decades of work and at the very least would be extremely expensive to replace in the event of a disaster. The lecture firstly looks at the methods commonly employed to safeguard an image archive, for example multiple copies across different media types, mirroring. This is followed by an examination of each of these, and identifies issues with each, be they procedural or physical. Next the effects of the issues on image corruption are explored, together with examples of the resultant image corruption on different image encoding methods. Following the observation that most images in an archive are not viewed on a regular basis, methods of detecting corrupted images in an archive are presented, including a visual TIFF image scanner developed at the Ashmolean. Finally, some recommendations are made which will help to ensure the accurate preservation of a digital image archive.
David Zeitlyn, Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford, gives a talk for the DHOXSS 2015. This presentation is based on the practical experience of archiving 46 thousand (plus) images taken by a Cameroonian studio photographer over a 30 years period as part of the British Library 'Endangered Archive Programme' (EAP). I will discuss some of the practical and conceptual issues of working with images collections, looking at how face recognition and pattern matching can help put some order into collections whose scope is too large for an individual to hold in their consciousness. Scaling up means we need technological assistance to explore large collections else we are constrained by human attention spans and memory. Scholarship needs to develop or at least face up to these limitations.

Robert Wojtowicz, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies and Professor of Art History at ODU, discusses how art history found itself in near-crisis mode at the turn of the millennium, as analog slide photography gave way to digital imaging. Many senior art historians retired reluctantly rather than adapt to the new technology, even as junior art historians rose enthusiastically to meet the new challenge. He also examines of some of the latest digital tools and the ways in which they can enhance our students' understanding of art history.

Published June 7, 2009 GEM: 65th Anniversary of D-Day I've written a about the D-Day anniversary that includes an article that appeared in the Yorkshire Post about how the memory of WWII is slipping through the cracks of time. In my own family my grandfather's brother Elzie Cecil Moore who we called Uncle Elzie participated in the invasion of Normandy and received the bronze star and a purple heart for a shot he took to his shoulder during the invasion. Shortly after that he received a second purple hear for a shot he received through his face. She was the secretary to the Dock Yard Manager for Yard #2 and that meant that she helped hire and process all the Rosies.
