I was introduced to Chip Bell as Chipper Bro in Santa Barbara in the early 80's. The place, East Beach. I was a 20 something DJ on KTYD, and he was a 20 something 12 time World Champion Freestyle Frisbee Champion superstar who made a BIG life out of tossing a Frisbee and surfing. Chipper has had a remarkable career, and he's just getting started. We had not really seen each other since the early days on East Beach…flash forward to last week. We meet again at a funeral of all places. Our mutual friend Steve's mother Ardie passed away and here we are at a Catholic mass in Southern California seeing one another for the first time in over 30 years. He looks the same maybe a little bit more gray on his crazy head of beautiful hair, but still the same Chipper Bro, positive uplifting, honest, engaging, and present in the moment. Shout out to beautiful Ardie for reconnecting us. As we sat at the luncheon in the hall after her beautiful service, I knew within two minutes I had to have Chipper Bro on the show. This show will inspire you to continue to pivot, set goals, and embrace life as you feel the life-force energy that is Chipper Bro. As Chipper is fond of saying..."You Gotta Work for Hope." In this episode we sit down with our friend, Pete Sliwkoski, owner of Larry's Tackle Shop, and Fish Chappy Guide Service. I first met Pete ten years ago on East Beach during the Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. We instantly hit off and had mutual respect for each other's drive and passion for the fish, the island, and for life. I always look forward to sharing the beach and a beer with Pete. Pete has recently taken the lead on being the steward that Chappy needs, he is passionate about beach access and keeping it available for all to enjoy. If you have not been to the Martha's Vineyard yet, you need to, and f you have, you know how great Larry's Tackle Shop is. Thanks for listening! We know you will enjoy this one! You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Richard Lancellotti is a former first baseman-outfielder who played for the San Diego Padres , San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox. He batted and threw left-handed. A gifted slugger who led four different leagues in home runs, Lancellotti received only limited opportunities on the Major League level to showcase the power he displayed in the minor leagues. A perennial minor-league All-Star, he played in 15 different leagues and several countries, including stints in Canada, Colombia, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Venezuela. Now, we turn our feature story…. Residents of Washington County told a state committee Wednesday that: The measurement approach suggested by a landmark court decision is useless to determine where the public portion of the beach begins, rights of way or paths to the shoreline are often blocked and are hard to reach, and enjoying the beach is more difficult than ever. About 60 residents gathered Wednesday for a meeting conducted at Chariho Middle School by a special legislative committee formed to study coastal access rights in Rhode Island. Residents of Westerly, Charlestown, Narragansett, and members of the Narragansett Indian Tribe described problems in those towns as well as in South Kingstown, Middletown and Newport. They pleaded for and sometimes demanded action by the committee. Cinna Zerquera-Martin, who chairs the town of Narragansett's Coastal Access Improvement Committee, said: "We need a well-defined boundary to distinguish between public and private property. One that is easy to explain in layman's terms and by visual inspection." The state constitution guarantees residents of the state a right to gather seaweed, pass along the shore, and to fish and swim, but the vexing problem is figuring out where private property ends and where the public area begins. The current boundary, called the mean high-tide mark, is derived from a state Supreme Court case that originated with a trespass arrest made in Westerly in the 1980s. Those in attendance Wednesday said the mean high-tide mark, which is calculated based on 18.5 years worth of data, was never a good measure because it is always based on old information. Many of the speakers told of being harassed by private property owners accusing them of trespassing even when they were in the water or other areas that were clearly public. Bella Noka, a Narragansett Indian Tribe tribal elder: "As a Narragansett tribal elder, I find it very ironic that people are here tonight standing up and fighting for greater access to the beach when it was stripped from my people. We have no access whatsoever." Noka said she has been harassed while conducting tribal ceremonies, including one following the death of her mother. Noka encouraged those in attendance to unite. Jennifer Krekorian, a South Kingstown resident, said the walk she enjoyed as a child from East Beach in Westerly to the Watch Hill Light House is no longer possible because of large stones placed at the base of Taylor Swift's mansion. Rights of way or paths to the shore are blocked or monitored by security. Jed Thorpe, access coordinator for Save the Bay, encouraged lawmakers on the committee to pass a proposed bill that would decriminalize trespassing along a 10-foot swath of the Rhode Island coast. The bill was proposed by state Rep. Terri Cortvriend of Portsmouth, who is chairing the special legislative committee. Several of the speakers pointed to Westerly as a particularly difficult place to access the shoreline due to an abundance of fire districts and other problems. Patricia Almeida, of Charlestown, said that The ocean and the beach are parts of the identity of people who live in Rhode Island, even those who cannot afford beachfront property,. Stay up to date on this story and more at westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
It became a recurring motif, though not exactly a conspicuous one. If you’re a regular listener to SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, you’ll know that our final question to our guests is some iteration of: “If you had to give an up-and-coming beach volleyball player one piece of advice, what would that piece of advice be?” Some might expect a secret drill, a certain lift in the weight room, that one key to unlocking their potential, the secret formula to why Taylor Crabb always seems to be in the right place, at the right time, all the time (just watch the Manhattan Beach Open final and you’ll understand). The most common bit of advice, however, is as simple: Just play. This week, with Bourne home in Hawai'i and me in Maryland for an emergency trip home, we had to cancel the podcast, so we gathered advice from four of the best in the game -- Taylor Crabb, Rafu Rodriguez, Nicolette Martin, Katie Spieler -- on how, exactly, they became the best in the game. “Be a student of the game,” said Crabb, a likely candidate to win at least one of Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player and Best Defender on the AVP Tour this season. “Be smarter rather than stronger, faster, bigger. It’s more important than the other things. Learnt he game, learn why things work, learn why things don’t work. The more you play, that’s when you get bigger, faster, stronger, going on the beach, just playing every day, you’ll train those muscles naturally. The gym does help also but the IQ of the game is the most important thing.” This season was, incredibly, only Crabb’s third on the beach. Just as he did in 2017, he enjoyed a career year in 2018, winning a pair of AVPs in Seattle and Chicago as well as claiming King of the Court in Hawai’i. His theory, too, was supported by three other SANDCAST guests – Spieler, Rodriguez, Martin – who all, not so coincidentally, enjoyed career-highs. “Just keep – just play every day,” said Martin, who claimed fifths in Austin and Seattle, narrowly missing her first Sunday. “We were talking about playing too much or whatever, but if you’re up and coming, I think it’s super important to get out to all those CBVAs on the weekend and just be playing as much as you can because it’s such an experience sport for sure. Just as much as you can touch a ball, the contacts, make sure when you’re going to the beach, get [phone] numbers, talk to people, that’s huge.” It has been for Martin, just as it has been for Spieler, a 5-foot-5 dynamo out of Hawai’i who made her first career Sunday in Austin, where her and Karissa Cook finished third. The founder and coach at East Beach Volleyball Academy, Spieler tells her girls to do exactly what she does over the summer: “Get out there and play as much as possible,” she said. “Growing up at East Beach, I would just go down and play with older guys or pickup games all day on the weekends and I think that’s when I really learned that I, a) loved the sport, and b) just a lot of different ways to score. So I don’t think you necessarily need to play for a club, even though that’s great if you have the resources to do so. Just that we are able to go down to the beach, grab a ball, maybe pick up a player and get better is great. So just get out there.” Rodriguez, the final guest on the SANDCAST radio hour of sorts, emphasized tournaments and pickup as well. He’s no stranger to CBVAs and AVP Nexts, despite winning an AVP in San Francisco this season, his first career AVP win. “Just go out and play in as many tournaments as you can,” he said. “Learn the game playing the game, right? Even me, I go out and play in CBVAs and all those one-day tournaments because you got to go out and play. Yeah, you have to train and learn the techniques, but you need to go out and play and play and play and play.” Popular on SANDCAST:SANDCAST: Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah PavanSANDCAST: Taylor Crabb, AVP Seattle championSANDCAST: Sarah Sponcil, Pac-12 Champ, National Champ, AVP FinalistSANDCAST: Tim Bomgren, the Minnesotan who couldSANDCAST: Netherlands’ Brouwer and Meeuwsen go for gold or bust Train like the pros, with the pros, at VolleyCamp Hermosa! Nathan Amy brought a gym to the beach. In fact, he can bring a gym anywhere in San Francisco. With his new fitness company Kokoda, Nathan uses a mobile fitness truck to bring a gym to you. The truck is loaded up with tons of fitness equipment. Nathan can pull in to any location, unload his equipment, and set up a fully functional gym in a matter of minutes. Most of the time, his gym is set up at East Beach right next to Crissy Field. He leads classes there six days per week. I recently joined Nathan at East Beach for his Functional Fitness class. Let me tell you, it did not feel like I was at the gym. On a crystal clear evening, I worked out as the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge and a light breeze blew in from the bay. The view was incredible and the workout was intense. I was still feeling it a few days later! Nathan's journey to starting up Kokoda is an interesting one. He grew up in the Australian Outback and joined the army at the age of 17. After leaving the army, he worked various jobs in the private security sector in Kabul, Afghanistan. At a United Nations barbecue, he met the love of his life and that led him to San Francisco. Nathan lives in the Marina and shares his favorite spots there and throughout San Francisco.
