If you've been a longtime listener to this show, you know there are several things that we've emphasized over the years like the importance of friendship, healthy masculinity, and growing civil society within our local communities. For the last year, I have been hosting a podcast for Citizen 7, a local group dedicated to building deep friendships between men with the hope that it will spark redemptive change within Indianapolis. Big Hearted Indy is a podcast about friendship making a difference, and I think you will be encouraged by adding it to your podcast app.  This is my favorite episode. My cohost Don Palmer and I welcome guest host Dave Neff, Rex Fisher and Mark Nottingham to the podcast to discuss their journeys of navigating careers, family life, and community investments. Listen in as they discuss their experiences with Edge Mentoring, Shepherd Community Center, and their entrepreneurial endeavors, providing valuable insights on balancing faith, work, and relationships in the vibrant city of Indianapolis.  Download the podcast here: https://link.chtbl.com/citizen7 Here is the YouTube Channel. Todd Richardson is the CEO of EDGE Mentoring, a non-profit organization connecting generations in meaningful mentoring relationships. In this episode, Todd and Nikki discuss the importance of developing the whole person–the professional, personal, and spiritual self–and the tremendous impact it has on engagement. Truth You Can Act On 1. Spend half your one-on-one meetings having real conversations about the person’s well-being. [00:07:43]I had a colleague, dear, dear friend, um, Les Gleaves, who was a lifelong professional development guru. And whenever. We would meet, he would take a deep breath before saying his first word and ask, how are you? And he asked it in a way required more than a one word answer. You know, I asked my kids every day when they come home from school, how was school? And the reality is. It's more out of repetition and more out of kind of requirement and routine where I say, you know, have a school, I am expecting a good answer.[00:08:42] 2. Personally check in with your people frequently–at least every other day. [17:37] I try to make it a point to reach out to each of my employees, at least every other day in daily. I can. And it doesn't have to be anything more than a Hey, checking in on you. Hope all is well today. Let me know if I can be of assistance, but I think what happens is we all escape too. You know, the dark corners of our houses and apartments and condos, and it's easy to get isolated into like your on an Island. [18:09] 3. Create space for employees to connect with each other. [19:39] as leaders, one thing that we can really push on is create the space and the opportunity for employees to devise and come up with affinity groups that are important to them, and then allow them to play leadership roles. It allows them to. Show up to the office show up to the, you know, whether it's live or, and to be able to ring others in the workplace together around topics that are important to them. [20:08] Book Recommendations:   Worthless Elimination of Hurry by John Komar Halftime by Bob Buford and Jim Collins The Second Mountain by David Brooks   Sponsor: The Zone – The Zone is the space where happiness and high performance coexist. Marcus Hall is a father of twin four year olds. The President and Partner of California Closets. He serves on the Board Of Directors for Edge Mentoring. And an emerging ultra runner. He and his wife went from zero to two kids right out of the gate. Quickly learned that discipline is key and got good support from family friends. But like any good dad you just gotta get in the trenches and get your hands dirty sometimes literally. Shortly after his girls were born Marcus took on a new professional challenge in a leadership role at California Closets where he's now the President and Partner. He says there's no secret or playbook just "A weekly sequence of mistakes that I try to improve on daily." Key for him is being cognizant of the whole person that is Marcus. He recognizes that without that awareness a bad day at home becomes a day at the office and vice versa. Maintaining consistent communication at home and at work is integral. He knows there are times hes got to be all in at work and times hes got to be all in at home. And setting boundaries. In his house dinner at six is important and he always makes the effort to be home for that even if sometimes his obligations don't allow that happen the effort and communication is there. Marcus's career path has been unusual by most standards, but it's a testament to having an open handed mindset to opportunities as they arise. From sports marketing, to software, to custom closets, Marcus has created success by being open to opportunities in the situation at hand. Having had an unusual career path himself, it's enabled him to be more open to the reality that there's really only so much we can control in our children's lives and ultimately they're unique individuals. Having twins means recognizing their individuality is even that much more important. No matter what his kids interests are, right now they're really into dance theater, it's about helping them explore that passion and facilitate opportunities to scratch that itch. We go on to talk about the role mentoring and development in the household. Marcus compares it to his work in professionally mentoring and how much effort and intent goes into professional development, but rarely do we put down on paper how we want to love our kids and in what areas we want to pour into them. This is an area I know we all struggle with and Marcus encourages us to avoid the comparison trap. The reality is we probably are doing a great providing experiences and love for our kids, but if we can't get ourselves out of the comparison trap we don't recognize how good we are doing. Marcus also talks about his running journey and jumping from the half marathon distance to a 50k race. Just taking the mindset of "Doing Hard Stuff With Cool People" Marcus once shared with me the concept of "first fruits." He recognizes that it's not easy to do that each day and how fortunate he is to have a "high capacity spouse" who can run so many aspects of their household and is blessed with high attention to detail. Being intentional to start his day with the things that fill him up. Spending time reading the bible. Journaling both gratitude and stream of conscious prayers. Getting in some physical activity. Spending time with Christ in the morning knowing that the rest of his day will spent pouring out to his 51 team members and then immediately tagging in at home "blocking and tackling" his girls so his wife can finish up dinner. Last words of advice: "Don't be to hard on ourselves. Have some level of intent. Go thank your spouse. Write love letters to your kids for them to have as an artifact when you leave this earth." From mentoring online or over the phone to in person these two have done it all.We talk about how mentoring benefits individuals as well as how feeling that you unqualified to become a mentor is a common feeling and one that you should not let keep you back from starting the journey. We all have life experiences that we have learned from and because of that we all have something to impart to other individuals. We dive into that in this episode and also talk about how mentoring in person can take on a different persona and get us to another place that we are not able to go sometimes through online or over the phone mentorship.Questions asked:How has mentoring benefited you?How do you bring new people into a group mentorship? How does mentoring in person differ from onlineTopics covered:Overcoming the feeling that you don’t have anything to offer as a mentor. The benefits of meeting in person for mentorship. How your life experiences qualify you to be a mentor.Connect with Claire Couch:LinkedInEmail: claire.couch@getconga.comConnect with Kirby and Sharpen Podcast:WebsiteInstagramLinkedInFacebookTwitterPinterestListen to Sharpen on:iTunesStitcherGoogle PlaySpotifyYoutube

Dave Neff (@DNeff84) is the Founder and CEO of EDGE Mentoring, a faith-based intergenerational mentoring organization focusing on bridging the professional engagement gap. EDGE spans 40+ states and multiple countries and gathers thousands of professionals annually for its EDGE|X leadership conference. “We’ve created a third space that’s outside the home. It’s not where you go to work or church. It’s a third place, like Starbucks, for millennials to engage in whole-life, intergenerational mentor relationships." – Dave Neff What We Discuss with Dave Neff: Dave’s first experience with mentorship and how it developed organically. What is the professional engagement gap and why it impacts most millennials. The philosophy surrounding EDGE Mentoring and how it formed. The balance of work, life, and faith. Can it be managed? The misunderstanding of millennials contributing to their bad rap. Like this show? Please leave us a review here — even one sentence helps! More About the Show Dave Neff’s career started by working for the Indiana Pacers after graduating from Ball State with a degree in Sports Administration. At first we worked in ticket services, sales, then the sold the suites at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. In 2011, Dave switch careers at taking a position in marketing for ExactTarget (now a subsidiary of Salesforce) in downtown Indy. While working for the Pacers, Dave sold a suite to an animal health company called Elanco that operated under Eli Lilly. what started out as a business relationship between Dave, Jeff Simmons and the company he lead turned into a mentoring relationship. In 2009, Dave was asked to join a twice-a-month mentoring call Jeff was starting with 3 other young professionals. But this wasn’t some bible study, it was whole-life, touching on the spiritual, personal habits and discipline, and career. As time went on, they added more mentees with various backgrounds and they quickly became very close, taking trips and networking, even participating in each other’s weddings. After the acquisition of ExactTarget by Salesforce, Dave was faced with a choice – either stay and ride out the transition, or try something different. He looked to his mentors in the company, and nearly all of them were leaving. So he decided to go a different direction too. In 2014, Dave founded EDGE Mentoring, a young professionals mentoring organization aimed at connecting faith-driven professionals with like-minded peers. Dave had a deep upbringing in the Christian faith. He grew up in a very conservative Evangelical household, attended a prestigious private Christian high school in Indy, and was involved in CRU in college.  “While there was a some great merit [to my church], and I learned the Gospel,... you didn’t hear the word grace a lot about grace,” Neff says. “It was sort of this very prideful ‘this is my faith, and if we don’t line up on every jot and tittle, then we aren’t on the same team.’” Instead, leading his faith-based mentoring organization, Dave strives to seek out and surround himself with people that don’t believe exactly what he believes. Now in its fourth year, EDGE is quickly becoming the go-to resource for young professionals of faith to to explore deep connections with like-minded peers and learn from mentors they can look up to.
