For years we've understood the strong link between exercise and physical health. What has been underappreciated is the link between exercise, physical activity, and mental health. Our guest in episode 116, Dr. A'Naja Newsome knows this well, but also knows the narrative is changing. This paradigm shift is not a moment too soon given the severity of the mental health crisis in America. As Dr. Newsome points out in our conversation the burden of disease from mental illness is on par with chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes.Dr. Newsome reminds us that all is not lost. Physical activity and exercise can play a prominent role in reducing depression, anxiety, and help us cope with stressors better. Those of us who exercise regularly certainly know this already. Sadly, as we'll discuss, this perspective isn't adopted and broadly operationalized in the mental health community. Dr. Newsome is seeking to change that through her research, advocacy, and education of fitness professionals. Join us as we dive into the critical concepts fitness professionals need to consider about helping their clients improve their mental health and treat mental illness through movement.Show Notes Page: https://wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode116Our Guest: Dr. A'Naja Newsome PH.D., CEP, RCRSPA respected educator with a doctorate in interdisciplinary education with an emphasis in exercise science, public health, measurement and research from the University of South Florida, Dr. Newsome is a nationally recognized presenter and has represented a number of leading organizations as a master trainer, including American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, and Technogym USA. Episode 124 - The Keys to taking your health and fitness into your own hands, and live life on your terms w/ Scott Freidman Scott's Biggest belief: “I believe in deliberate action, hard work, and pushing oneself. If you want to do something – then do it. If that doesn't work – then do something else. The only failure is when you give up on what you want to do.” Scott was born just outside Chicago in Park Ridge, IL. and grew up in the Northwest Suburbs outside of Chicago…but for the sake of simplicity, I am from Chicago (sorry Chicagoan's who get mad about that).  He earned a B.S in Kinesiology, and a minor (whatever that means) in coaching from Northern Illinois University (NIU). Go Huskies! I earned my Master's in Sport Administration from Northwestern University. What I do is coach, to help break nutrition and fitness down to the very core. Need help losing weight? No problem. Need help making a routine? I have you covered. Want to build muscle? We can definitely do that. Need someone to inspire your co-workers, sign me up! What I won't do is allow people to make excuses for not being where they want to be, showing them, they can do what they desire if they put in the proper work and prioritize what is important. I show people the simple steps, I show people it is possible, and people can achieve your goals. The Battle Warrior Podcast brings a high energy show that promotes the FEAR THE WARRIOR mentality. The college athletics landscape has changed significantly since 2021, when the NCAA approved legislation allowing student-athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). That legislation opened revenue streams for student-athletes and sponsorship/branding opportunities for companies looking to invest in this space, including professional sports teams. With college athletic departments offering anywhere from 14 to over 30 sports, hundreds of athletes per school are eligible to earn money off their NIL rights. Overseeing NIL is a growing part of working in college sports, as keeping track of such a high level of potential sponsorship requires organization and personnel.Today's guest on the WorkInSports Podcast is Jamaal Walton, University of Washington Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sport Administration and Strategic Initiatives. David Ridpath joins Tim to talk about some recent court rulings, rule changes and other decisions that have cleared the way for college athletes to get paid. Dave is a Sport Management professor at Ohio University, and he's an expert on NCAA governance, academic issues and athlete rights. The focus of this conversation is how paying athletes will change the NCAA  landscape for athletes, fans, universities and marketers. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/NCAA_NIL_Branding_auphonic.mp3 In June of this year, the U.S. Supreme Court came down with a decision against the NCAA that now paves the way for college athletes to be paid. But it's not that simple. The court decided only on education-related benefits, and not broader compensation matters. Not long after that, the NCAA Board of Directors approved changes that will now clear the way for college athletes to start earning money based on the fame and celebrity they achieve. But they can earn that money without the risk of losing their eligibility or putting their own schools or sports programs at risk of violating amateurism rules. Here's what happened. The Supreme Court ruled against the National Collegiate Athletic Association in an antitrust case. The ruling now limits the NCAA's rights to bar college athletes from getting paid. The Court allowed non-cash compensation for college athletes.  In its ruling, the court said the NCAA violated antitrust rules. It said athletes should be paid for education-related benefits. The court did not rule on the larger compensation issues. The NCAA had built its case around the idea that limits on athlete pay do not violate antitrust laws because they encourage consumer choice. They said that their restrictions are what distinguish college athletics, or amateur status, from professional athletics. At the end of June, the NCAA decided to suspend its restrictions on payments to athletes for things like sponsorship deals, online endorsements, personal appearances. In other words, athletes can no make money on their name, image and likeness for marketing purposes. Keep that in mind as we talk to our guest today. The NCAA decision applies to all athletes across all of its divisions – Division One, Division Two and Division three athletes. That's' roughly 460,000 college athletes in the United States. In fact, most of those athletes won't see a big difference in their finances, but a few of the most elite athletes will. Dave Ridpath has followed this issue for many years and says this is one of the biggest changes to college athletics in decades. In reality, it's just one of many styles. And because leadership is not one-size fits all, we're talking to Greg Adamson about the importance of understanding the labels we use, seeking to understand the needs of the people we lead and finding strategies that best fit each context. Greg is the Associate Director of Olympic Sports Performance at the University of Tennessee, where he works with swimming and diving, women's soccer and men's golf. He received his Master of Arts in Sport Administration from Central Michigan in 2010. In this episode we dive into: The importance of questioning terms, labels and assumptions before adopting them Why a one-size fits all approach won't allow you to truly “serve” the people you lead The case for getting our hands dirty and the need for more “imperfect leaders” How to consider the role of the follower in the leadership equation Connect w/ Greg: Via Twitter: @UTCoachGreg Via Instagram: @UTCoachGreg Via  email: greg.adamson@utk.edu

Whatever attitude or belief you are having is not only influencing the child but at a higher rate, because your child is around you all the time.- Marissa Baker   Marissa Baker was born and raised in Naples, FL and grew up playing competitive volleyball. She went on to play NCAA Division II collegiate Volleyball at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. During her time at UNC she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and a master’s degree in Sport Administration. She is currently the Athletic Supervisor of North Collier Regional Park, which is home to eight tournament soccer fields and five tournament softball fields. In her role, Marissa is supervising tournaments on weekend and league play throughout the week, and sees up close how sport parenting and behavior play an important role in athletic performance. Marissa has studied emotional contagion, or the concept that attitudes are picked up from person to person. She emphasizes that children pick up on cues from parents, and what happens in a moment can ripple out to what happens on the field, off the field, and even in the career world in that athlete’s future. In this episode, Marissa and Kathy discuss how she has witnessed the decline of rec sports in favor of club sports, early drop-out and burnout rates rising, and why she encourages parents not to skip the developmental level of playing simply for fun. Whether rec ball or going outside as a family and playing just for enjoyment, intentionally not skipping out on that first level is what will produce the happy pro athlete (or just a happy adult) you’re hoping to raise. Marissa also stresses how her parents encouraged her growth by taking initiative, keeping personal accountability rather than averting to others, and working through problems independently. She credits handling conflict on her own, with support, as an important tool for her growth. Marissa is the co-host of the Sun Happens Podcast, which you can tune into on Spotify, iTunes, and Google Play. She and her co-host discuss a wide range of topics centered around the “why” of faith to motivate positivity and personal growth. Their tagline, “When you can’t find it, create it.”, epitomizes the tone of this episode; her conversation with Kathy is full of positivity and motivation.
