At the after-school Bible club where my wife Sue serves once a week, the kids were asked to donate money to help children in the war-torn country of Ukraine. About a week after Sue told our eleven-year-old granddaughter Maggie about the project, we got an envelope in the mail from her. It contained $3.45, along with a note: “This is all I have for the kids in Ukraine. I’ll send more later.” Sue hadn’t suggested to Maggie that she should help, but perhaps the Spirit prompted her. And Maggie, who loves Jesus and seeks to live for Him, responded. We can learn a lot as we think of this small gift from a big heart. It mirrors some instructions about giving provided by Paul in 2 Corinthians 9. First, the apostle suggested that we should sow “generously” (v. 6). A gift of “all I have” is certainly a generous one. Paul also wrote that our gifts should be given cheerfully as God leads and as we’re able, not because we’re “under compulsion” (v. 7). And he mentioned the value of “gifts to the poor” (v. 9) by quoting Psalm 112:9. When an opportunity to give presents itself, let’s ask how God wants us to respond. When we’re generous and cheerful in directing our gifts to those in need as He leads us, we give in a way that reflects “thanksgiving to God” (2 Corinthians 9:11). That’s big-hearted giving.

For our first episode of Season Three, we're setting up Julio Alvarez, creator of the Let's Go with Julio podcast and founder of Out in Tech, the largest LGBTQ+ tech networking community in the world. After working at several Silicon Valley companies, Julio struck out on his own to become a coach and speaker. Julio recently read and enjoyed The Garden Within and The Way of Integrity, but shies away from books that are too analytical. He wants to relax. His dream Saturday is a bike ride around Central Park, scrambled eggs and salmon on toast, followed by a low-key afternoon. His karaoke go-to is “More than Able”, and he thinks everyone should watch Titanic and used to have it in the background every night for years before bed. Episode 95: Suzi Hunn & Her Book, Big-Hearted Entrepreneur: Own Your Worth and Amplify a Mission That Matters ABOUT SUZI Suzi Hunn founded Teach Your Thing in 2017 to help changemakers amplify their impact. Her specialty is designing education experiences that expand audiences and create income streams. Her book, Big-Hearted Entrepreneur, is a practical guide for helping purpose-driven leaders own their worth and amplify a mission that matters to them. Suzi has more than twenty years of experience developing learning tools for nonprofits, social enterprises, cultural institutions, K–12 schools, corporate groups, authors, and founders. As an educator at the Minnesota Historical Society, her largest project was coordinating the second edition of Northern Lights, a history curriculum used by sixty-five thousand sixth graders annually. Other favorites included developing multimedia materials on Ojibwe beadwork and Hmong immigration and presenting at conferences like Games + Learning Society and National Council for the Social Studies. She lives by the rallying cry, “You have medicine that you must own.” Suzi lives outside St. Paul with her partner and golden retriever. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS The humility, curiosity, and honor we can have for the work clients have already done. When it comes to teaching, "The person doing the talking is the person doing the learning." The opportunity that exists among those we're teaching. How her own experienced trauma and her experience as an entrepreneur bolstered her message to others of recognizing and protecting their worth. How a crime made her more passionate about sharing her ideas and made her trust that she had a voice. How much you can achieve for yourself -- even in the face of Imposter Syndrome? The power of finding what the right container is for you -- does it allow your work to be fun or to be a drudge? Give yourself permission to create what you want to create, not what you think you should create. THE HARMONY OF STRUCTURE AND FREEDOM IN FDC Hello, Big Hearted community! Today, I dive deep into a topic close to my heart, discussing the delicate balance between structure and freedom in education, particularly in the family daycare space. THE JOURNEY TO BALANCE Today's discussion will sound familiar if you've taken my Essential Elements course. We often grapple with creating a child-led curriculum without losing sight of the need for intentional teaching. The secret? A harmonious blend of structure and freedom! UNDERSTANDING RHYTHM & ROUTINE Routine: Fixed, predictable, and occasionally perceived as rigid. Rhythm (Ebb & Flow): Flexible, adaptable, and mirrors nature's rhythm. Think about how the sun rises and sets slightly differently each day. Our body, too, follows rhythms, from our heartbeat to our breathing. MORNING CONNECTIONS Embracing the gathering circle in the mornings helps educators check-in with children, creating pivotal moments of connection. It sets the tone for the day and offers children an opportunity to be heard and feel seen. ADAPTABILITY IS KEY We live in times of continuous change. Hence, adaptability is essential, especially when new requirements are introduced. Establishing rhythms and routines makes it easier to make necessary modifications without disrupting the flow. This "ebb and flow" helps both educators and children move seamlessly through the day, building trust and ensuring growth. IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATORS With changes around us, finding pockets within our day for tasks like documentation is essential. Reflect on your rhythm. Knowing when to bring in structure and when to allow freedom can transform your day, week, or even year. JOIN US FOR DEEPER INSIGHTS! For a detailed exploration of these concepts and much more, doors to the Essential Elements course will open soon! Join a community that thrives on supporting each other and enhances the educational journey. WAITLIST OPEN The waitlist is now open for those eager beavers. Joining early might also fetch you some delightful bonuses! But if you're still on the fence, that's okay! Continue to join us here, absorbing all the insights and deciding when the time is right for you. THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN! Whether you're an educator, parent, or just an enthusiastic learner, your perspective enriches our community. After working as a pediatrician for more than a quarter of a century, I have learned many big lessons. One of which is that parents are naturally big-hearted. In this episode, Diana and Todd Burns talk about their labor of love to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need. They jump in to save horses and donkeys from a terrible fate and an unknowing public. This is truly a love story with an ornery mini pig, noisy prairie dogs, romping alpacas, and meandering tortoises- truly a cast of creature characters! At the heart of this story is Diana and Todd's fierce determination to care for each animal as best they can. Diana and Todd Burns own and operate DT Ranch in Marlow, Oklahoma. It is a rescue and rehabilitation farm and petting zoo with over one hundred animals big and small! You can follow DT Ranch on Facebook because things there are never dull! QUOTE HIGHLIGHTS DIANA: “I don't wanna be one of these people that sit at home and say, you know, I wish I could have something like that or ...I wish I could do that. I wish I could help these animals. I don't wanna be that wishy washy person. I want to help. Yeah. No matter what I want to help.” DIANA: “I think the best part is when I get donkeys in that I've never had human contact that has never had a brushing or a hand just stroking its main, to look in their eyes and from going from mistrust...and fear to loving and wanting that right there... Okay. And that's what drives me to keep doing is yeah. When I look into their eyes... the mistrust is gone...You see a trusting donkey. You see a donkey that wants to be loved. Yep. And that wants to give love. “ DIANA: “My biggest dream is to go to the livestock auctions, the sales barns get the donkeys before they get into the hands of the kill buyers, then have soldiers that have PTSD come out and work with the broken rejected donkeys, taking two broken souls, putting them together to mend. “ ( DONATIONS for the care and feeding of animals can be made at Paypal! In this episode an older man is targeted by a young woman from the Philippines who claimed to be a victim of health issues and a devastating typhoon. Rather than being a young woman who was having a string of bad luck, this was a scammer who came up with one sad story after another, convincing the big-hearted gentleman to send money. Remember, NEVER send money to someone you have not met in person. If you suspect you are being conned by someone who is perpetrating the romance scam, talk to someone you are close to for their input and advice. You can also call AARP's Fraud Watch Network Hotline and speak to a Fraud Specialist at 877-908-3360. Or, call the Santa Barbara Fraud Hotline at 805-568-2442. The episode ends with a Good News Story. Two brothers in Maryland were convicted and sentenced to three years in Federal Prison after laundering money for Romance Scammers in Ghana to the tune of more than six million dollars!
Dr. Wolfe discusses the basic pathophysiology of high blood pressure and its consequences within the body, as seen in those who are autopsied due to deaths from hypertensive cardiomyopathy.
We have more access to creativity, intelligence and expression when we feel safe. In this episode I interview Danielle Cohen, a visibility coach and brand photographer. She describes how no single image COULD EVER tell the full story of who you are…and in this episode she shares with us that we can build a body of work and a body of expression to share our work with the world. We talk about how we contribute to growing "safeness" with our clients and the groups we facilitate. Danielle shares about how being explicit with our roles, expectations and agreements is kind to those we are working with. We weave in attachment theory, CPTSD, developmental trauma and various ways to build a foundation between us and those that we support when in the role of care provider. This is helpful for everyone - not just folks with trauma. "What feels safe to one person may not feel safe to someone else" and we breakdown how to co-create space with others and acknowledge each of our individual needs for safety. About Danielle: Danielle Cohen (she/her) is a visibility coach and brand photographer with a unique approach to helping pro-social creative entrepreneurs, coaches, visionaries, and healers (aka beacons) step into and offer their greatest work by becoming more visible on their terms, owning their story and their magic, having the impact they're here to have and thriving while doing it.
