Horror Fest '22: Project Audion 23: The Whistler, "Man From the Morgue" In this specially curated collection for Halloween 2022, we will be presenting a wide selection of old-time radio (and other) horror programs. For our seventh, we are proud to present a remake of a radio play that was broadcast only once, in 1952: THE WHISTLER, "Man From the Morgue". Appropriate to the Halloween month - but good anytime - Project Audion's latest premiere is an episode of old time radio's long-running (1942-1955) mystery anthology series, "The Whistler". Over 700 episodes were originally broadcast, but we're recreating one that doesn't survive: "Man from the Morgue," which aired January 13, 1952 and was since lost. Our coast-to-coast cast features outstanding performances all transcribed live via Zoom... Jeff Billard in Massachusetts Larry Groebe in Texas Chris Hart in Florida Kristen James, California Ken Jeffries, California John Mauldin, Tennessee Rhiannon McAfee, Calfornia Greg McAfee, Calfornia Brad Oxnam, Tennessee Sound patterns were performed by Ele Matelan in Illinois. The show was directed by Jon Mauldin and produced by Larry Groebe. (Orig. launched 10/8/21)

Today my guest Ele and I will be uncovering how common sounds in entertainment get made through the art of Foley. Ele is a stage Foley Designer and Performer who has designed, choreographed, and performed Foley for over 80 productions in Chicagoland, with companies including Theatre of Western Springs, Lifeline Theatre, Oak Park Festival Theatre, and The Second City Training Center. She is a Foley designer in residence for Locked Into Vacancy Entertainment's monthly live comedy serials, and for WildClaw Theatre's Deathscribe, the annual international live horror radio festival. She contributes to the next generation of Foley Artists with her guest lectures at Northwestern University's School of Sound and at Harvard University's School of Music, and with her consulting for theaters across the globe.Remember: Sound is an essential part of the storytelling experience. Whether you’re in theater or film, it’s easy to get excited about sound when it comes to sounds effects like body hits for a fight sequence or blasts in an explosion. But those are not the only sounds that carry a story forward, so don’t overlook the “everyday sounds” within your project.Research: Review a current script you’re working on. What everyday sounds that would naturally be in the scene are important in order to tell the story? What sounds showcase a character’s emotions? What sounds can be used for foreshadowing? Make sure to take note of any sounds that need to be prioritized during production or post-production.Challenge: As an ongoing challenge, focus on collecting sounds for your project. This can be done through collecting physical objects that create unique noises or simply taking notes of interesting sounds you hear that you would love to incorporate in your next story. http://www.victoriaruke.comTo learn more about Ele and her projects:http://www.wildclawtheatre.com/http://www.lockedintovacancy.com/Follow her on social media: @WorldBShiny
Assistant Director Nick Mataragas interviews Foley artist, Ele Matelan. They discuss the history and name origins of Foley work and it's almost alchemical way of creating sounds, the parallels of horror and comedy, stabbing melons, showmanship, the Chicago theatre scene, and the entertainment shutdown.Apologies to how geeked out Nick gets. Apparently he's enraptured by the idea of creating thunder with sheet metal.https://soundcloud.com/wildclawtheatrehttp://www.lockedintovacancy.com/https://quirkyvoices.weebly.com/https://nomore10outof12s.com/http://www.vintagepercussionsoundeffects.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html
Traitors to country created by Neil Verma. "For this piece I made an experimental audiobook with dialogue structured around bespoke field recordings, foley and archival audio. My inspiration was to create a composition that both vocalized and commented on the text, using one voice to “gnaw” on another, just like the central image of the section in which Count Ugolino gnaws on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri. During research, I became interested in vocal fragments that suggest the inability to speak, and these sounds also became part of the work. "I built the background with the following components: contact mic recordings of wire fences near Spittal of Glenshee in Scotland; stereo recordings of winds in the Caledonian forest in Scotland; ice on Lake Michigan ice near Chicago during the “polar vortex” freeze of 2019; a summer soundscape at Death’s Door Bluff in Wisconsin; maggots eating the brain of a dead goat in Ireland near Kilfinane; Canyon recordings at Starved Rock State Park, Illinois; and archival audio of breaks during the congressional Iran-Contra hearings, 1987. "The performers in the piece are Cristina Marras, who read the original Italian text in the first section, Prof. William West of Northwestern University who commented on a translation of the original text by Allen Mandelbaum, Lawrence Grimm, who performed Ugolino’s monologue based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s translation, and Ele Matelan, who performed all the foley work. I made the field recordings myself, and did the mixing and mastering." Part of the Inferno project to imagine and compose the sounds of Dante’s Hell, marking the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy. To find out more, visit http://www.citiesandmemory.com/inferno

There will not be a new episode of Unwell today. Following the example and the words of Black Lives Matter Chicago, we call for an end to the state violence against and criminalization of Black communities through police forces, an unjust legal system, and federal, state, and local political organizations. As the artists of HartLife NFP, we call on our fellow art makers in positions of institutional power and privilege to take concrete actions to make your institutions and artistic work explicitly and actively anti-racist. We affirm our commitment to do the same here. We will interrogate ourselves when we have fallen short of this goal and recommit to do better every time. The United States is a country founded on land stolen from indigenous peoples, built with the stolen labor and lives of enslaved Black people. We call especially on White listeners to reckon with this fact, today and every day. The following list is both incomplete and horrifyingly long. These people were victims of hate crimes, police officers and of an unjust, white supremacist system. We say their names and we remember their lives. Greetings, fellow Wellesians, Wellsians, OTR-lovers, Mars-lovers (not Bruno), historians, and seekers! Today, in honor of World Audio Drama Day (observed annually, every October 30th) 2018, 63audio is proud to present a special panel discussion featuring the following friends and fellow audio drama makers (in alphabetical order): Ed Champion of "The Gray Area" podcast Joe Griffin and Ele Matelan of Wildclaw Theatre Chicago Jeff Niles of 4077th Productions Aimee Pavy of "12 Chimes, It's Midnight" podcast We're discussing the historic and fateful "War of the Worlds" radio program from the Mercury Theatre on the Air, first broadcast on CBS on 10/30/38. So what are you waiting for? Start listening, eh? And enjoy!
How on earth do you start to design your sound effects from scratch? What do you need to create some horrific horror sounds fight scenes or exploding bits for audio? How do you plan and prepare foley from a script alone? How easy is it to plan live foley? What could go wrong?!These questions and more are explored when Sarah interviews the truly wonderful and amazing Ele Matelan Of Wildclaw theatre and more. Enjoy! And thank you so much for listening. Let us know if this inspires you to use more foley! We’d love to hear from you..

This week's episode sees the return of lovely recurring guest Ele Matelan (from Our Fair City, Starlight Radio Dreams and Locked Into Vacancy Entertainment), to help us unpack 1986's Rawhead Rex! Written by horror icon Clive Barker (a.k.a. Pervy Lovecraft) and based on his short story, Rawhead Rex sees the return of a goofy-looking hell demon to terrorize a small Irish village, with only an obnoxious American photographer and his sexy grey cardigan to stop it. Check out our episode, along with our custom cocktail and drinking game! (Thanks to our sponsor Cards Against Humanity as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!) This week, the always lovely Ele Matelan of Our Fair City and WildClaw Theatre joins us once again - this time, we're talking about the cult Canadian sci-fi-dark-comedy Nothing, about a pair of losers (David Hewlett, Andrew Miller) who find themselves lost in a white void after hating the rest of the world away. Take a listen, along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (Thanks to our sponsor Cards Against Humanity as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)

This week, Ele Matelan of WildClaw Theatre and Our Fair City joins us once again to talk about the Wes Craven home-invasion thriller The People Under the Stairs! One of those rare socially-conscious 1990s horror movies, Stairs follows a young boy named 'Fool' as he tries to rob his price-gouging landlords, only to learn they're leather-wearing psychopaths with a horde of vampiric zombie hostages in the basement. It's a curiously fun mixture of camp and creeps, and we've got a custom cocktail and drinking rules to get you through the night! (Thanks to our sponsor Iron Galaxy as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)
This week, we play 2015’s winning piece for Deathscribe, a horror radio play competition put on by Wildclaw Theatre in Chicago -- later in the show, I'll talk with Wildclaw company member, Foley artist, and friend of the show Ele Matelan. She's great, and she wants you to scare the crap out of her with your own Deathscribe play! Check that out here:http://wildclawtheatre.com/deathscribeThe feature: "Earwigs". Written by Joseph Zettelmaier, directed by Sara Sevigny, starring Robyn Coffin and Jennifer Santanello, and featuring Foley work by Ele Matelan and Jeffrey Gardner.Content warning: spooky business, jump scares, swear words, body horror, bad relationships
This week on Alcohollywood, Ele Matelan of WildClaw Theatre joins us as we continue our March full of Mars movies with the companion piece to last week’s Red Planet, Brian De Palma’s Disney-produced Mission to Mars! Telling the same story of a group of astronauts taking off for the Red Planet (Gary Sinise, Connie Nielsen, Tim Robbins and Jerry O’Connell) to investigate Don Cheadle’s doomed first mission, De Palma’s 2001-lite slog takes some hard left turns amongst its Disney-caliber safeness, and we’ll take you through them along with our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (Thanks to our sponsor Jackbox as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)
This week on Alcohollywood, guest Ele Matelan of WildClaw Theatre (and our friend from Our Fair City) grabs a milkshake and sits down with us to talk about listener request and 2007 arthouse darling There Will Be Blood! Among one of the more contemplative films in Paul Thomas Anderson’s repertoire, TWWB tells the story of Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis, in an oft-admired and long-impersonated performance), an unscrupulous oil man who seeks to start and expand his oil empire from nothing. Full of gorgeous shots, fascinating performances, and a fair share of psychologically complex characters, this one gave us plenty to talk about. Give us a listen and check out our custom cocktail and drinking rules! (Thanks to our sponsor Cards Against Humanity, a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop!)

Merry Krampus, listeners! We’re celebrating Christmas by dipping back into the horror well with Daniel Lackey of The Nightmare Gallery and Ele Matelan of Our Fair City and WildClaw Theatre, as we dig into the Finnish horror flick Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale! A micro-budgeted curiosity from 2010, Rare Exports follows the travails of a small rural community in Finland who runs afoul of the historical Santa - now a homicidal, mute old man who’s more Hannibal Lecter than Kris Kringle. From herds of nude old men to dozens of children in rucksacks to defensive use of gingerbread, this movie’s got quite a bit of charm to it, and we highly recommend it if you’re not just gonna be watching The Interview on Christmas Day. Check out our custom cocktail to lighten up your holidays, not to mention our drinking rules!

Ele Matelan from Wildclaw Theatre spills the beans about blood! Knife strikes! Blood-sucking monsters! Scholarly ruminations on Science Fiction and Horror! And more crazy wordplay than a blender full of dictionaries.
