Welcome to episode 178 with Hannah Phillips, who is a mother, a runner, a writer, speaker and trainee psychotherapist. Han is a returning guest and first appeared on Proper Mental back at episode 110.  In that episode we covered her early experiences with OCD, her relationship with alcohol, getting sober and hitting crisis point shortly after. I reached out to Han to invite her back on for a specific conversation.  For episode 177 I spoke to Joe Griffin who is a psychologist and co-founder of the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy.  I was a wonderful conversation and I was very taken both with Joe and the approach to therapy that he co-created. I wanted to chat to someone who has worked with Human Givens as a therapist and someone who has experienced the other side and received this type of therapy. Hannah Phillips is both.  After coming within hours of taking her own life, Han was referred to a Human Givens therapist and she credits these sessions with both saving, then changing her life.  After getting back on her feet, she began training to be a Human Given therapist. In this episode Hannah and I chat about the therapy that she received and how it helped.  We chat about the courses she has been doing and how she is implementing everything that she's been learning. We also chat about the work she is doing around men's mental health in her local community and her upcoming ultramarathon. Hannah is one of my favourite people and a constant source of inspiration for me.  It was wonderful to have her back on the podcast! The Proper Mental Podcast

Welcome to episode 177 with Joe Griffin, who is a psychologist and co-founder of the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy. Human Givens is a practical, holistic and scientific approach to therapy that focuses on what individuals need to live mentally healthy and fulfilling lives. It draws on the latest insights from neuroscience and psychological research, and combines this knowledge with proven therapeutic techniques from a wide range of approaches to provide highly effective interventions. Joe has many years of experience in both psychotherapeutic practice and in training psychotherapists and in this episode, I chat to him about how he started working in this field and how this work led to the creation of Human Givens. At the core of the Human Givens framework is the idea that all humans have a set of 9 emotional needs and when these needs aren't met, it can lead to mental ill health. Joe and I chat about the 9 emotional needs, what they are and what gets in the way of these needs being met. We chat about the cycle of depression, the role of metaphor and storytelling in the healing process and about how sleep ties all this together. If you are interested in exploring the Human Givens further, Joe's team have provided some resources below: Emotional needs poster Emotional resources poster Information sheet about our approach and training.  Free mental health resources Identifying what needs are not being met - The Emotional Needs Audit form.  About ENA.  You can learn more via the website www.hgi.org.uk and connect on social media @thehumangivens or @joegriffin_hq If you would like to watch this episode or any of the others, you can do so by joining the Patreon community at www.patreon.com/propermentalpodcast.  For £3 a month you'll get early access to any and all episodes that aren't available to watch anywhere else and you can submit questions for upcoming guests!  You'll also be helping to support the show and keep it fully independent and ad free. ClearVoice was acquired by Fiverr in 2019 and has been operating as an independent subsidiary since then. Join me and my guest Ivan Tyrrell as we dive into the basic fundamentals of what it means to be a thriving and emotionally healthy human being. Based on his co-authored work "Human Givens: a New Approach to Emotional Health and Clear Thinking" Ivan shares the fundamental necessities that all humans share. We dive into what doesn't work about modern psychotherapy, why REM state and dreaming is essential for our health, how trance and hypnosis is essential for learning and even into the nature of consciousness. Ivan Tyrrell worked for many years as a psychotherapist (specialising in brief therapy for depression and anxiety). He now spends most of his time lecturing and writing. As a Director of Human Givens College, editorial director of the Human Givens Journal, and board member of the Human Givens Institute, his influence in (and knowledge of) the field of psychotherapy and counseling is considerable. In 1992 he and a group of psychologists and psychotherapists established the European Therapy Studies Institute (ETSI), whose aim was to discover why some psychotherapy approaches appeared to work and others didn't. ETSI quickly gained several hundred members from a wide variety of professions whose support enabled them to publish a journal, The Therapist, the forerunner of the Human Givens journal. The human givens approach to psychotherapy and psychology developed out of the work and research of this group as they endeavored to bring greater clarity to the way people who become depressed, anxious, traumatized or addicted are helped, as well as making such help more reliably effective. Ivan is also co-author with Joe Griffin of numerous, influential titles, including: Human Givens: the new approach to emotional health and clear thinking How to lift depression… fast Why we dream: the definitive answer Freedom from Addiction: The secret behind successful addiction busting How to Master Anxiety An Idea in Practice: Using the human givens approach Release from Anger: Practical help for controlling unreasonable rage Godhead: The Brain's Big Bang – the explosive origin of creativity, mysticism and mental illness View all here > and five ground-breaking monographs on psychology and counselling including The APET model: patterns in the brain, which brings cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and SFBT approaches into line with new scientific discoveries about how the brain works, and The Shackled Brain: how to release locked-in patterns of trauma and Hypnosis and Trance States which gave the first psychobiological explanation for hypnosis. Other titles include: The Survival Option, published by Jonathan Cape and Back from the Brink: Coping with stress, published by Virgin Books, which he co-wrote with Nick Leeson. He is a founder member of The Conciliators Guild.   Join me at my upcoming 4 day event RESONANCE or another event: spohntrained.com/events

Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, and this week with special guest Joe Griffin, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every Saturday at 6pm GMT. This time, continuing our Summer of '99 season, M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense. 1999 was a great year for movies, with a host of massively successful (and cult) hits that would define cinema for a next generation: The Blair Witch Project, The Virgin Suicides, Stir of Echoes, Election, The Haunting, Fight Club. The Summer of '99 season offers a trip through the year in film on the IMDb's 250. After discovering that one of his cases has gone spectacularly wrong, child psychologist Malcolm Crowe finds himself drawn to a suspiciously similar case. Cole Sear is a strange and troubled little boy, haunted by something he refuses to articulate. Can Malcolm save this child, and atone for his earlier failure? At time of recording, it was ranked 157th on the Internet Movie Database's list of the best movies of all-time.

He’s one of the founders of Toxic Bag Productions, which in 1996 pioneered the field of sound effects specifically designed for use in tabletop roleplaying. Links Griffin Sound Design Toxic Bag Productions The Toxic Bag Podcast @griffinsound on Twitter Donny Who Loved Bowling on Bandcamp Show Notes Joe's company Toxic Bag has been producing audio products for use with tabletop roleplaying games since the 90s. It grew out of their desire to add an audio element to their home Call of Cthulhu campaigns. Initially they intended to produce audio-enhanced scenarios, but chaosium didn't have the budget for it. They stripped away the scripting and actors and focused on sound effects. They put together their first CD, the 20th century, in 1996. They would sell these physical CDs at GenCon. Back in 1996 mp3 formats were terrible. After a few years doing sound for film and theatre, they got back into RPG sound effects but aren't doing CDs anymore. Convention sales are difficult to manage when you're selling digital files, but the modern internet provides more distribution options. Now they sell through DriveThruRPG. Toxic Bag creates their effects through foley and field recording rather than relying on commercial libraries. Their podcast started out as coldly promotional, but they revamped it to provide more content, including sketches, reviews, interviews, and parodies. Joe does the sound design, his partner Steve Baldwin does the writing. I have appeared on the Toxic Bag podcast with my Burning Brigid Media co-producer Kat O'Connor Joe's day job is in advertising as a recording engineer. His marketing wisdom: People don't like being sold to. Make it a conversation. Promotion is okay, but if all you're doing on twitter is marketing yourself, people will tune you out. Reveal who you are. Put yourself into it. You need to have a thick skin to put your work in front of people. Joe composes music for theatre and toxic bag projects. He performs as part of the experimental band Donny Who Loved Bowling Joe is doing sound design for John Klein's short film Limerence. The kickstarter was successful and they're moving into post-production.
