This episode deals with the use of animal metaphors in Poe's works - concentrating on The Conqueror Worm and perhaps the most well-known of all poetic metaphors - The Raven. And imagine that (instead or a raven) Poe used an owl - or a parrot. What differences might that change in metaphors make?

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American poet, short fiction writer, critic, and accomplished editor known for his gloomy and sometimes grisly subjects. He pioneered the detective story and is remembered as a master of Gothic and Romantic literature. His works have inspired films, themed restaurants, football teams, and at least one bizarre ritual around his grave. Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

This is episode 177 (The Arrogant Coffee-Machine) of Celebrate Poe.Unlike the more recent podcasts of Celebrate Poe (or AI Poetalk,) George does not use ChatGPT to “communicate” with the persona of Edgar Allan Poe, but uses Microsoft Bing - to very disappointing results. It is interesting to compare the user-friendly, knowledgeable style of ChatGPT to the “arrogant” and “user-unfriendly” output from Bing. O Yearning Heart: An Edgar Allan Poe Rhapsody A collection of performances by rhapsodes of Rhapsodize Audio that traces hope through the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. “Oh, Yearning Heart”: Tracing Hope through the Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe Known predominantly for his short stories focused on the darker elements in humanity or even for contributing to the birth of the modern detective story, Edgar Allan Poe is rarely celebrated for his work as a poet. However, because of the innate succinctness poetry presents, we are able to examine the poet's message about several different subjects in a relatively short period of time. In this rhapsody, we will address the concept of Hope, which is not perhaps something one readily connects with Mr. Poe. In many of the twenty-four poems included in this collection, the word “hope” is directly included. In the remaining poems, it is quite easy to derive the speaker's attitude towards it. Whether the speaker is a newly jilted lover, a man on his deathbed, or a detached observer, Hope in some capacity waits in the wings, revealing something about life in general and maybe even something about Mr. Poe himself. Poe's volatile life is no secret, and one can only imagine that these events had some bearing on the poignant verses included here. We have included some old favorites and, perhaps, a few poems audiences may not be so familiar with. This episode deals with tropes as rhetorical devices. George gives an absolutely groan inducing way to remember antomasia. The ghosts of Mr. Poe and Mr. Shakespeare give examples of antonomasia, metaphor, simile, synecdoche, onomatapeia from their works. The Winter of Folk Horror continues, with a bubbling cauldron of films involving witchcraft, or that boil over into persecution of perceived supernatural abilities. When I see images from our first feature in this episode, they look so old, so authentic, that they MUST be real! But it's Satan's tongue that just may be the most memorable part of Haxan (1922)! If you're seemingly the lone uninhibited woman in a small Italian village, you may be better off exercising some restraint. And if you are practicing a few spells, you probably shouldn't reveal them to anyone, for fear of being being branded as Il Demonio (1963)! One of the most notorious witch-hunters in English history, is brought to the screen by Vincent Price, in perhaps his most vile performance. Your innocence will not save you, when Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General (1968), rides into town. Another infuriating travesty of justice transpires, when the accused are brought before a tribunal, with profit in mind. When these methods of torture are utilized, even the most strong-willed can crack under the weight of the Witchhammer (1970). And then from there, a superstitious mountain community has labeled Albrun and her mother as witches. But is there truth in their beliefs? Or does a form of madness take hold in the isolation, that is the only life Albrun has ever known? Get ready for our take on Hagazussa (2017).
Tom and Jenny talk about the 1968 Vincent Price film, directed by Michael Reeves and known in the US as The Conqueror Worm, that tells a fictionalized tale of infamous British witch hunter Matthew Hopkins and his reign of terror during the English Civil War. THE CONQUEROR WORM BY EDGAR ALLAN POE
Mike Mignola debuted his most iconic character, Hellboy, in 1993. Since then, Hellboy has punched his way through battles with Nazis, vampires, ghosts, floating heads, Lovecraftian cosmic horrors, and even Santa, all in the name of a days work and keeping the world safe. Matt and Tony have long been fans, but as with following anything that lasts for decades they've been in and out of Hellboy's regular adventures. Now that Hellboy's story has come to a definitive end, Matt and Tony caught up on the stories they had missed in preparation for the big red guy's final adventure: Hellboy in Hell. They discuss the mythology and circumstances that brought a reluctant devil to the underworld, Hellboy's "just a regular guy" attitude about scrapping with monsters and shunning his destiny, and why Mike Mignola's singular aesthetic makes Hellboy such a joy to read and revisit. Big time spoiler alert: This is a discussion about the "final" Hellboy miniseries. Plenty of warning is given before diving into details, but if you've ever been curious about Hellboy, maybe bookmark this one.

On this week's Bodacious Horror Podcast, Gill & Roscoe are joined by very special guest, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein of the legendary horror punk band The Misfits. Doyle discusses his formative years as a monster kid, being back on the road with Glenn Danzig, the forthcoming Danzig Legacy TV special and the new DOYLE album "Abominator"! As if that wasn't enough, we also talk about horror films dealing with witchcraft, including "Horror Hotel" (1960) (AKA "City of the dead"), "Witchfinder General" (1968) (AKA "The Conqueror Worm") and "Lords of Salem" (2013). We tried to contain our fiendish excitement on this one, but we failed, creeps. As ever, 'all hell breaks loose', and we end up talking about some pretty random stuff with the big guy. EA Poe read by Classic Poetry Aloud: http://www.classicpoetryaloud.com/ Giving voice to the poetry of the past. --------------------------------------------------- The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) Lo! 't is a gala night Within the lonesome latter years. An angel throng, bewinged, bedight In veils, and drowned in tears, Sit in a theatre to see A play of hopes and fears, While the orchestra breathes fitfully The music of the spheres. Mimes, in the form of God on high, Mutter and mumble low, And hither and thither fly; Mere puppets they, who come and go At bidding of vast formless things That shift the scenery to and fro, Flapping from out their condor wings Invisible Woe. That motley drama—oh, be sure It shall not be forgot! With its Phantom chased for evermore By a crowd that seize it not, Through a circle that ever returneth in To the self-same spot; And much of Madness, and more of Sin, And Horror the soul of the plot. But see amid the mimic rout A crawling shape intrude: A blood-red thing that writhes from out The scenic solitude! It writhes—it writhes!—with mortal pangs The mimes become its food, And over each quivering form In human gore imbued. Out—out are the lights—out all! And over each quivering form The curtain, a funeral pall, Comes down with the rush of a storm, While the angels, all pallid and wan, Uprising, unveiling, affirm That the play is the tragedy, "Man," And its hero, the Conqueror Worm.
