Welcome to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast! I'm your host, Stewart Alsop, and today's guest is the insightful Paul Spencer of Zeitville Media. In this episode, we explore Paul's thought-provoking ideas on the Patchwork Age, a concept he developed in 2020, which examines the breakdown of large cultural institutions and the reorganization of meaning on individual and micro-tribal levels. We discuss the interplay of technology, the influence of the 90s, and the emergence of hybridized cultural forms in the 2020s. Paul also shares his perspective on the role of puritanical thought in contemporary society and its impact on community dynamics. This concept was inspired by his observations of societal changes during the early pandemic and highlights the need for people to stitch together various cultural elements to find personal significance.Impact of the 90s: Both Paul and Stewart reflect on the influence of the 90s, a time they describe as the "big tent" era, where cultural synchronization was more prevalent. They discuss how the transition from this cohesive period to the fragmented present has affected millennials, who grew up with certain expectations of continuity and stability that have since been disrupted.Role of Technology: The conversation underscores the critical role technology plays in the Patchwork Age. Paul points out that technology has accelerated the fragmentation of cultural institutions and facilitated the creation of micro-tribes, while also providing tools for these smaller groups to connect and find meaning.Puritanical Thought in Modern Society: Paul delves into the resurgence of puritanical thought in contemporary culture. He explains that in the absence of a unifying big tent, many people and communities turn to strict, puritanical codes to create a sense of order and certainty, often resulting in exclusionary or cult-like behavior.Cultural Hybridization: The discussion explores how the 2020s are marked by the hybridization of cultural forms. Paul and Stewart note that the blending of genres, ideas, and traditions—partly a result of the digital and analog worlds colliding in the 90s—continues to shape the way people create and interact in today's fragmented cultural landscape.Challenges of Micro-Tribalism: The shift from large, cohesive cultural institutions to smaller, fragmented micro-tribes presents unique challenges. Paul discusses how these micro-tribes often face internal fractionation, leading to further fragmentation and instability. He emphasizes the need for individuals to navigate this complexity creatively to find stability and meaning.Future of AI and Synthetic Relationships: The episode touches on the future of AI and its potential to create synthetic relationships. Paul predicts that as AI technology advances, people will form relationships with AI entities, which could lead to complex ethical and philosophical questions about consciousness, embodiment, and the nature of human connections in an increasingly digital world.

In this Advancing Communities Podcast, Cinnaire CSO Jim Peffley checks in with Paul Spencer, President & CEO, KMG Prestige and Dana Hanchin, President & CEO, HDC MidAtlantic, two organizations actively engaged in the management of affordable rental properties in a number of states. Imagine heading out your door pedaling west and returning, years later, from the east covering each and every mile around the entire planet under your own power. That is exactly what this week's guest is planning on doing through a life-defining, thought provoking, mindset expanding quest to "Pedal Round the World." Paul Spencer is in the midst of planning what has to be one of the biggest challenges a person could possibly take on- a self propelled circumnavigation of the globe using his bicycle and a beautifully designed pedal boat. Inspired by adventurers Jason Lewis and Erden Eruc and wanting to deeply explore the world and his own psyche through 50,000 miles in this honest-to-goodness adventure odyssey. Paul is a cyclist, endurance athlete and an adventurer who has taken on gigantic challenges in his career- cycled across Africa, finished the Leadman challenge, four crossings of the U.S. by bike, Tour Divide, Colorado Trail Race- just to include a few. In this episode we chat all about his plan to pedal round the world, what his expectations are, the factors he's had to consider to prepare for the long ocean crossings. We also geek out about Jason Lewis's "The Expedition" books, chat about Paul's rugby career, beer miles, what it's like to cycle with a Malaria infection, and what he's discovered about himself through travel and endurance. It's an AWESOME episode and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. Definitely check out his website and social media to support and follow along with his journey! Hyperstition is a key concept in the philosophy of Nick Land. It refers to fictions which, given enough time and libidinal investment, become realities. JF and Phil explore the notion using one of those optometric apparatuses with multiple lenses -- deleuzian, magical, mythological, political, ethical, etc. The goal isn't to understand how fictions participate in reality (that'll have to wait for another episode), but to ponder what this implies for a sapient species. The conversation weaves together such varied topics as Twin Peaks: The Return, Internet meme magic (Trump as tulpa!), Deleuze and Guattari's metaphysics, occult experiments in spirit creation, the Brothers Grimm, and the phantasmic overtones of The Communist Manifesto. In the end we can only say, "What a load of bullsh*t!" Americana is a genre of music that didn t exist in the UK till Paul Spencer brought it back from the US. Some may argue with this proposition but it s fundamentally true. Paul s a Brit who lived in Los Angeles, worked in the music business, and traveled frequently to New Orleans where he got to know and love Jazz Fest among other indulgences . When he moved back to the UK, Paul started up the Maverick Music Festival, which is kind of like Bonnaroo meets Jazz Fest, over the 4th of July weekend each year. On his current sortie to the US, Paul has been to Meridian Mississippi and comes back with a glowing report of what s going on there that you ll want to go check out for yourself. His tales from Montgomery Alabama are a little more sobering. Arsene DeLay is a member of the Boutte family, one of the royal families of New Orleans music. Her song about a break up is delivered with either extraordinary a passion or b anger. Pick one. If you d like to get in touch with Arsene s grandmother, Mama, it s a little late, but you can try her phone number if you d like. it s 504 945 2361. Arsene is picking up Mama s life where Mama left off Arsene is a Downtown Baby Doll. Next time you see the Baby Dolls on the street, impress your friends by using the correct collective noun it s a crib of Baby Dolls. If you re not from New Orleans and you have no idea what this baby doll thing is all about, Arsene explains it all. Lana Joseph is a Westbanker. That s something else that probably makes little sense if you re not a New Orleanian. The Westbank has a special place in the hearts and minds of New Orleanians if you re from there it s an unappreciated gem, if you re not from there it s a mystery as to why people from there think it s an unappreciated gem. Nonetheless, Lana is carving out a name for herself on the East bank with her audiology practice, High Level Hearing. If you re listening to this show on earbuds, Lana has a message for you see you in the clinic to get fitted for hearing aids when you turn 60. Earbuds and headphones are Lana s greatest job security. And apparently sticking toilet paper in your ears at a gig doesn t protect your hearing, in case like 2 out of 5 people at this table you do that. Spoiler alert Andrew Duhon is one of those people who sticks toilet paper in his ears. Andrew has played Paul Spencer s UK Maverick Festival a couple of times. Today Andrwe tries out a brand new song, and, as is often the case on Happy Hour, it s staggeringly good. If you stick it out till toward the end of this 60 minute conversation you re going to learn something vitally important to the future of our nation that you may not know how to talk to someone who violently disgarees with your political philosophy. Happy Hour is probably not the first place you d think to turn to for politicial punditry or insightful life lessons, but New Orleans barroom conversation is a whole other world. “Podiatrists should not be discriminated against any further. E&M (evaluation and management) requirements are the same as (those for) other providers, and we should be reimbursed justly,” one podiatrist recently wrote, expressing his opposition to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS’s) proposed E&M reimbursement changes in the recently posted 2019 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. “If Medicare is going to change E&Ms to only two codes, then all specialists should be changed,” another opined. “All I have to ask is what about optometrists? Why aren't you focused on them as well?” Reported by RACmonitor, the controversy centers on the proposal by CMS to reimburse new patient visits at a single flat rate for codes 99202-99205 (99201 would be paid at a lower rate), while a corresponding, lower flat rate would apply to established patient visit codes 99212-99215. Code 99211 would also be paid a lower rate. The level 1 codes don’t get the flat rate, because they don’t require the presence of a physician. The Readmissions Quagmire: Medicaid Work Requirements Pose Audit Risks

The state of Kentucky has introduced Medicaid work requirements. And the trend seems to be proceeding fast and furiously in other states looking to cut health and behavioral health benefits of Medicaid enrollees, with officials saying the costs can’t be met otherwise. Kentucky eliminated vision and dental benefits to 500,000 Medicaid enrollees within 36 hours of the federal decision. Imagine the impact to the readmissions quagmire if benefits continue to be cut for the most vulnerable and disenfranchised members of society, or those most impacted by the social determinants of health (SdoH). These costs are already eye-raising: $1.7 trillion is being spent annually on 5 percent of the population. Readmission penalties are barely being managed across all hospitals, especially the safety net facilities. What will the continued impact of forcing shifts in Medicaid benefits be for the patients who need them most?
