Released in 1980, Hangar 18 was arguably Hollywood's first UFO conspiracy movie. Its plot features many aspects of the real-life UFO enigma, including specific details from allegedly authentic top-secret UFO-related government documentation. But was it also a propaganda film for the Mormon church? (Mormons, Aliens, and Hangar 18) *** A struggling student is suddenly followed around campus by a strange man who has something very unusual to show him. (The Laughter of God) *** Rudolf Diesel is probably best known as the inventor of the engine which bears his name, but his puzzling and seemingly inexplicable disappearance on September 29, 1913 left behind a mystery nearly as enduring as the legacy of his engineering achievements. (Gone in the Night: The Extraordinary Life and Mysterious Disappearance of Rudolf Diesel) *** In 1960, the bodies of three women from the Chicago suburbs were discovered in Starved Rock State Park. The manhunt snared a confessed killer – and while he still remains in prison, he says he was framed. (The Starved Rock Murders) *** Author and Weird Darkness fan Patrick Hueller brings us an original story of fiction entitled, “2031: The Toys, They're Bleeding”. *** A young girl goes for a walk into the woods and suddenly finds she's not alone. (A Rather Strange Company) *** Though he was born into a Roman Catholic family, Adolfo Constanzo quickly fell into alternative religion, focusing on black magic and the occult…. but then he went even darker than that. (Catholic Boy, Drug Kingpin, Satanic Cult-Leader, and Serial Killer) *** In April 2007, a rash of sightings were reported of a strange creature prowling around the outskirts of Stafford, in the UK. Is it possible that there is finally evidence of werewolves in the 21st century? (Cannock Chase Werewolves) *** Hollywood has used the Greystone Mansion in numerous movies and TV shows… but would the actors be so comfortable filming there if they knew it's murderous and haunting history? (The Greystone Mansion Murders) *** Records indicate that the man known as the Comte de Saint Germain was born in the late 1600s/early 1700s, but reports by other well-known figures in history have told of a similar man that can be traced back to the time of Christ. This man was known by famous figures such as Casanova, Madame de Pampadour, Voltaire, King Louis XV, Catherine the Great, Anton Mesmer and many more. Starved Rock State Park is a beautiful national park located in the State of Illinois, USA. The park is home to dark historical past, but today flourishes with beauty and awe. However, that dark past seemed to come back to life in the winter of 1960. In March of that year , Frances Murphy, Lillian Oetting, and Mildred Lindquist set off for a girls' trip. Just days later, the three women were found in Starved Rock State Park, bludgeoned to death with their hands and feet bound. After months of investigation, a man was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Now, nearly 64 years later, that man still claims his innocence, and the evidence doesn't exactly hold water. Did this man really kill the women back in 1960? Or was the killer, or killers, never caught and set to roam free? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/patrick-conn/support

In today's episode, we'll discuss a triple homicide from 1960 where the suspected killer was ultimately cleared of charges after many years of declaring his innocence; there's police corruption, the mishandling of evidence, conspiracy theories, and a few puzzling inconsistencies. Where did all of this occur, you ask? That would be the Starved Rock State Park; it's located along the Illinois River in La Salle County and is considered one of the state's most beautiful locations. They arrived from the Chicago suburb of Riverside, about 90 miles northeast of the park. On March 14, after checking into the Starved Rock Lodge, the three took an afternoon hike through St. Louis Canyon, but never returned. Their disappearances went unnoticed until March 16 when the husband of Frances Murphy phoned the lodge to inquire about his wife. Police organized a search of the park which led to the discovery of the women's bodies, bound with twine and partially disrobed, inside a cave in the canyon. All three suffered severe head trauma and a blood stained tree limb found nearby was determined to have been used to bludgeon them to death.

Chester served his time, almost 60 years, he was released on parole and has been fighting to clear his name. The news this week about a new DNA test may do just that. In addition, we will talk about the other suspects that the police did not pursue for the women's' deaths. If you enjoy this podcast please rate us where ever you listen and share with your friends. In 1960 2 women went for a girl's weekend to Starved Rock State Park. The 3 were never seen alive again and police focused hard on one man and one man alone and that was Chester Weger. This week we are talking about the murders and the trial that led to Chester's conviction. But you will have to wait until next week to hear about the bombshell that JUST dropped about this case.Stay tuned for the second part next week. Handwritten police notes, dating to the weeks and months, following the triple homicide at Starved Rock State Park indicate that hundreds of people were questioned. A spectrum of characters ranging from the women's restroom attendant at the lodge, to known sex offenders from as far away as Chicago, and interstate truck drivers, were all pressed as to their whereabouts on the afternoon of Monday, March 14th. Most interviews consisted of a few pages of notes or in some cases, a couple of paragraphs, but two suspects in particular, stand out from the pack for the sheer bizarreness of their statements and actions, George Spiros and Gerald Nemke. In this episode we explore a these two most compelling suspects, their circumstances at the time of the murder and how their backstories make them undeniably plausible perpetrators. In the winter of 1960 three women were found brutally murdered in a cave at the Starved Rock State Park. After months of dead ends, a manhunt ensued that ultimately pinned the crime on a 21-year-old dishwasher at the Starved Rock State Park Lodge, Chester Weger. In spite of contradictory physical evidence and under immense pressure from the police, Chester confessed to the crime. He has spent the last 60 years in prison, maintaining his innocence to this day. We kick off this series with an overview of this convoluted tale and the team talks about the parts of the case that cause issues with the integrity of the conviction. Paige's week!Today Paige brings another true crime tale that hits a little too close to home. She talks about three friends-Lillian Oetting, Mildred Lindquist and Frances Murphy-who went on a little vacation to Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County, Illinois who were murdered on their first hike, the day they arrived at the park. In Part 1, we only get as far as naming a suspect but you can already feel that this investigation is not up to par. Keep an eye out next week for Part 2!
Episode #9 began with a three-mile hike back to a falls on a beautiful December day in Starved Rock State Park. Kathy Casstevens was our docent host for the day. A comfort food lunch provided the perfect backdrop for a great conversation about the park's history and plans for the future. From an impromptu birthday song in the bar and snowshoes to twins and a dog named Woody. From boys who seemingly worked for a dollar a day to music via a canyon harp and funeral bagpipes. Buckle up for this one.

*** Released in 1980, Hangar 18 was arguably Hollywood's first UFO conspiracy movie. Its plot features many aspects of the real-life UFO enigma, including specific details from allegedly authentic top-secret UFO-related government documentation. But was it also a propaganda film for the Mormon church? (Mormons, Aliens, and Hangar 18) *** A young girl goes for a walk into the woods and suddenly finds she's not alone. Sharon and Mindy discuss the tragic murders of 3 prominent women from the Chicago suburbs who were hiking in beautiful Starved Rock State Park on March 14, 1960. The crime shook northern Illinois and is one of the most shocking stories to ever occur in this otherwise peaceful region. Surprisingly, this story is actually still ongoing today, 61 years later. Traitors to country created by Neil Verma. "For this piece I made an experimental audiobook with dialogue structured around bespoke field recordings, foley and archival audio. My inspiration was to create a composition that both vocalized and commented on the text, using one voice to “gnaw” on another, just like the central image of the section in which Count Ugolino gnaws on the head of Archbishop Ruggieri. During research, I became interested in vocal fragments that suggest the inability to speak, and these sounds also became part of the work. "I built the background with the following components: contact mic recordings of wire fences near Spittal of Glenshee in Scotland; stereo recordings of winds in the Caledonian forest in Scotland; ice on Lake Michigan ice near Chicago during the “polar vortex” freeze of 2019; a summer soundscape at Death’s Door Bluff in Wisconsin; maggots eating the brain of a dead goat in Ireland near Kilfinane; Canyon recordings at Starved Rock State Park, Illinois; and archival audio of breaks during the congressional Iran-Contra hearings, 1987. "The performers in the piece are Cristina Marras, who read the original Italian text in the first section, Prof. William West of Northwestern University who commented on a translation of the original text by Allen Mandelbaum, Lawrence Grimm, who performed Ugolino’s monologue based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s translation, and Ele Matelan, who performed all the foley work. I made the field recordings myself, and did the mixing and mastering." She walks us through the content strategy that helped bring over two million visitors through Starved Rock last year, and she discusses some of the exciting projects on the horizon that aim to generate even more traffic next year. What Makes You Unique? Starved Rock Lodge is nestled in the heart of Starved Rock State Park in North-Central Illinois. It is such a unique place because it completely disrupts the rolling meadows and cornfields with 18 glacier-cut canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and unbelievable views. The actual lodge sits atop an 80 ft bluff overlooking Starved Rock on the Illinois River. And as you can imagine, there is a lot of material to work with in designing a marketing campaign that sets Starved Rock apart from the pack. Last year, they had over two million visitors come through their destination, and as travel and tourism start to pick back up, they plan to do more. Photography is one of the primary tools Kathy will use to accomplish that goal. Build Your Content Library When Kathy started working at Starved Rock Lodge, they literally had ONE digital photo. Now, they have a digital library of hundreds of thousands. With such an unusual landscape in an unsuspecting geographic area, being able to show prospective travelers what makes it unique is vital to their marketing efforts. Over the years, Kathy has expanded the range of platforms Starved Rock uses to promote it’s massive digital photo library, and she is able to reach a significantly greater audience through apps like tik tok, Instagram, and a handful of others. Staying organized is a challenge in and of itself, but if you can build a massive content library of your own, there is so much you can do with it at any given time. What a fun AND disturbing episode. Don't Be A Terrible Tourist * Defacing or Destroying Property - In October 2013, two Utah Boy Scout leaders thought a 25-million-year-old hoodoo presented an imminent danger for the kids they accompanied and consequently decided to topple it over and film themselves doing so. Hoodoos — also called goblins — are unusual rock formations that look like columns with rounded caps; although some may seem precariously balanced, you're not supposed to knock them down. They are also the main attraction of Goblin Valley State Park. - Two visitors to Starved Rock State Park in Illinois allegedly drew their initials on an over 400 million year-old sandstorm formation that's also a sacred place for Native Americans. "Over the Labor Day weekend, two visitors to Starved Rock State Park allegedly vandalized a sandstorm formation that is over 400 million years old, and that has also been used as a sacred meeting spot for Native Americans for 8,000 years known as Council Overhang, Newsweek reported." * Trespassing - Two men are in hot water for getting too close to the hot water at the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The tourists have since been arrested for “thermal trespassing” at the famous hot spring. The two men were caught walking “dangerously close” to the spout of the legendary geyser and taking photos on their cellphones. * Stealing - An American man visiting the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland was charged with attempting to steal a piece of the historic train tracks. On March 31, an American visitor to Auschwitz, one of the most well-known death camps from World War II, allegedly attempted to steal a piece of the metal train tracks leading into the camp. Many of the 1.1 million people who died inside its gates were transported to the camps via train. AP reported that the tourist was charged with "attempted theft of an item of cultural importance," which can result in 10 years in prison. * Indecent Exposure - Tourists in Thailand were arrested for taking nude photos at a historic temple. Two tourists from the United States were arrested in Thailand after taking nude photos at the Wat Arun temple in Bangkok, according to The Telegraph. The men traveled around the world posting nude photos on their now-deleted Instagram account, "Traveling Butts," including at the historic temple in Bangkok. After posting the photo, the tourists were detained, fined for public indecency, and blacklisted from returning to the country. - Skinny Dipping in famous rivers, lakes, streams and fountains. * Drunk and Disorderly - An American tourist was reportedly hospitalized after falling from a statue in Italy during a night out drinking with friends. A 23-year-old American was reportedly rushed to the hospital in Turin, Italy. La Repubblica reported that at around 1 a.m., after a night spent drinking at a brewery, a group of tourists stopped at the Piazza Bodoni, where one of them climbed on the horse statue - potentially to take a selfie. According to Torino Today he underwent brain surgery in the afternoon for life-threatening injuries. * Disrespectful Behavior ***** A family traveling around New Zealand had its visas revoked after wreaking havoc throughout the country, including threatening tourists, stealing, and ruining a motel room. A British family of 12 has been terrorizing the people of New Zealand for a month as they travel throughout the country. For starters, two children from the family were caught on camera stealing a Christmas tree while shopping at a convenience store. The family also allegedly refused to pay for meals at several restaurants, claiming there were bugs in their food and drinks. The behavior is said to have continued in their motel, as staff accused the family of throwing cigarette butts, beer cans, and even spaghetti on the floor. Staffers said the room "smelt like kid's poo" and took hours to clean. It doesn't end there, though. At the Be
He was released February 21, 2020. Chester Weger went to prison for the murder of three women from Chicago. The murders took place during a trip to Starved Rock State Park. On March 14, 1960 Lillian Oethy, Frances Murphy, and Mildred Linquist took a hike in the park and never returned. There bodies were found in St. Louis Canyon, a striking scenic area with a waterfall and rock walls. He still claims his innocence and a life lost behind bars. Frances Murphy, Lillian Oetting, and Mildrid Linquist, were three friends who just wanted a simple weekend getaway to Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby, Illinois. On March 14, 1960 on a simple mile-long hike through the snow and slush of winter, all three would be brutally beaten to death with a thick branch laying near by. It would be months of investigative work (all without the use of today's technology) to capture the suspected killer. He's spent 60 years behind bars, but in early 2020 will be released. Today's episode we talk about how Chester Weger was finally caught. Why some have said on their deaths beds say he may not have been the killer after all. Plus, the push from the victim's families still to this day... six decades since the crime was committed.

This week we are diving into the IVpod vaults and rebroadcasting Episode 29 - Frederick W. Matthiessen - IV All-Stars 1B. This episode was posted back on November 30th, 2011. Around the area, the man's name is best associated with the natural wonders of Matthiessen State Park, just a jog away from Starved Rock State Park. While this is certainly no small attribution, many don't know just how important the man was to the area. Also this week we talk about some more current issues of the day including the hot debates in Utica. We give our run down on the IVAR trivia night event, plus we paid a visit to O-nett Gaming. We have our usual segments and some fun rambling too. Rock on. This week we also hope you can check out Cops 4 Cancer. The charity program raises money for local families affected by cancer. It's a great program and they have upcoming events you should check out. They are on Facebook, Twitter, and their website. www.cops4cancer.com Links from the show: Deer Park Today Info Hegeler Carus Foundation Info One Mine Info Music From the Episode Cruzin (Benedek) / CC BY 3.0 SoundsafterSounds / Varazuvi / CC By 3.0 The Show Starts (Scratches By DJ Bobby Bob) (K.
