On August 8, 2022, the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Tornado Cash, making it illegal for United States citizens, residents, and companies to receive or send money through the service. This week on The Defiant podcast we speak to Zooko, the founder of Zcash. Privacy remains one of the hottest issues in crypto after the U.S. Treasury's recent move to sanction Tornado Cash. Zooko believes the ability to consent to what information is made public is more about freedom than privacy and he thinks that eventually, this will be expected in the blockchain space. We explore what a private transaction using ZEC actually looks like, with shielded addresses visible only to the sender and receiver. Finally, Zooko talks about The Electric Coin Company's future plans, which include moving Zcash from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake and a standalone wallet. Crypto Wednesday: Aztec co-founder Thomas Walton-Pocock hosts Zooko Wilcox, CEO of Electric Coin Company, to discuss Zcash, privacy, technical barriers, and innovation. Zcash, a decentralized, open-source cryptocurrency, is most identified by individuals for its built-in encryption which allows for private data in a public blockchain. Zcash's most important feature, according to Wilcox, is its dev fund—it's self-funding, which allows developers to continuously improve the protocol in order to prevent the currency from being undermined, weakened, vulnerable to capture, or steered in a direction for an individual's benefit. Some investors treat privacy, whether offered by Zcash or any other protocol, merely as an additional feature; however, Wilcox explains that because privacy is a fundamental aspect of its design, the Zcash protocol is stronger than other protocols that add privacy as a feature on top. Recorded on April 20, 2021. Key Learnings: According to Wilcox, privacy is a human right—consumers need it and are losing it to the internet. Wilcox saw Bitcoin as having a head start, and Zcash would be a niche alternative for those who were especially sensitive or motivated, or most importantly, for commerce. With its funding, continuous evolution, and use of zero knowledge, Wilcox believes that Zcash and its scalability could become the gold standard for usage. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, we catch up with Sean Bowe (https://twitter.com/ebfull) and Daira Hopwood (https://twitter.com/feministPLT) from the Electric Coin Company (https://electriccoin.co/) to chat about Halo, a recursive proof composition that doesn't require a trusted setup. We cover the efficiency techniques used in Halo such as "nested amortization", how the protocol was developed, what some of the key findings are, and how it fits in with the other recent SNARK-based protocols. CoinDesk reporter Leigh Cuen is joined by Elena Giralt, the Electric Coin Company’s product marketing associate known for her research on cryptocurrency usage in Latin America, to talk about how digital assets can subvert power dynamics. According to the Brookings Institute, roughly 4.6 million Venezuelans have fled the country so far, which the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees called the largest exodus in the region’s recent history. Many such refugees and diaspora Venezuelans use cryptocurrency for remittances or to earn freelance income. But, as Giralt pointed out, the industry at-large has a long way to go to improve ethical marketing in the region. “Adoption has been overstated by companies that have a vested interest,” she said. “If you’re going to promote a certain solution or initiative in a vulnerable population, there’s really a higher bar for disclosures and informed consent.” Consent is, from Giralt’s perspective, the underlying principle of cypherpunk technology. Later, we'll discuss how financial privacy is crucial to women’s rights and free, easy ways for people to empower women in their local communities.Want more? Leigh also has an article about Venezuelans using cryptocurrency.

Hosted by Enigma's Head of Growth Tor Bair, our twenty-first episode features Josh Cincinnati. Josh is the executive director of the Zcash Foundation, a non-profit focused on financial privacy and in particular serving users of the Zcash protocol. Zcash itself is a digital currency that provides enhanced privacy for users. Neither the foundation or the currency is to be confused with Zcash the company, which recently rebranded itself as the Electric Coin Company (but not quite in time for this podcast recording!). All of this can be a little confusing — but fortunately, Josh helps break down these definitions and relationships, as well as the mission of the Zcash Foundation, on this podcast.  On this episode Josh talks about the purpose of foundations (and Zcash Foundation in particular), how he thinks about privacy for individuals, how to get millions of people actually using Zcash, and why we should still have trust in blockchain technology — even if Bruce Schneier is a skeptic. Enigma's new podcast "Decentralize This!" features guests from all over the decentralization space: developers, investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, writers, artists, people in government and enterprise - all individuals who care deeply about building a more decentralized and sustainable world. How can all these people with different perspectives collaborate to create and scale the technologies we need to shape a better future? ---- Relevant links: Zcash Foundation: https://www.zfnd.org Zcash: https://z.cash Bruce Schneier’s WIRED article: https://www.wired.com/story/theres-no-good-reason-to-trust-blockchain-technology/ Bruce Schneier on Decentralize This!: https://blog.enigma.co/decentralize-this-special-episode-1-bruce-schneier-8f8546da8b82
