Thom Francis welcomes local poet and artist Melissa Anderson, who was the featured reader at the Third Thursday Poetry Night at the Social Justice Center in Albany on Thursday, April 17, 2025. ——— Melissa Anderson is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply influenced by a search for connection with the physical world, changing seasons, and our relationships with the places we call home. She co-runs the slam poetry team Slam Euphoria, as well as their bi-monthly poetry open mic at Cafe Euphoria in Troy. That night she read from her book "Dogstar Poems" (Main St. Rag Publishing, 2024), starting off with a poem from her day job making furniture for Chipotle, “Work Song,” and then a pandemic piece, “Bedroom Window Lockdown.” Melissa explained that “Dogstar” was another name for what is commonly known as “Polaris” or the North Star, & that many of the poems in the book are about looking for direction, as in the poem “Reflexivity.”

With more than 30 episodes under our belt, this episode stands out to us from our first season that we recorded back on November 5th, 2020, during the height of the pandemic lockdown. And summer is a great time for reflection. With that, we give you, once again, Adam and Joe in Season 1 Episode 6's discussion on “Reflexivity in Action Research with Dr. Lisa Starr”.Thanks for tuning in, and now, onto our hosts.—---------------------------------------In this episode reprise, Adam and Joe have a conversation with Dr. Lisa Starr about the role of reflexivity in action research. To understand this complex topic, they discuss two chapters Lisa wrote using reflexive and autoethnographic methods. It just so happens (or was it more than a coincidence?) that Adam is working on the chapter in his dissertation in which he reflexively discusses his positionality, so he asks Lisa to share her expertise (12:34) on how to approach reflexivity in Action Research (15:51). Later in the episode, Joe asks Lisa about the frameworks to reflexively understand one's identity in her chapters (25:11).If you are interested in the chapters mentioned in our podcast citations are below:Starr, L.J. & Mitchell C. New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 96 Dialectical Leftism doesn't just do the old Marxist thing anymore. There's a new dialectical game in town that allows Marxists worldwide to transcend classical Marxism, including in the Chinese Communist Party over the last few decades. That method is called "reflexivity," as it was outlined as a so-called "shoelace dialectic" by George Soros in his famous book The Alchemy of Finance (https://amzn.to/3XjXqJp). Host James Lindsay detailed the Soros method (https://newdiscourses.com/2024/04/the-reflexive-alchemy-of-george-soros/) recently in a long-form podcast on the New Discourses Podcast platform, and here, he summarizes the essential points in short form for the New Discourses Bullets. New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 79 A magic word for Woke Marxists and their shrewd handlers is "reflexivity." Reflexivity is the energy that makes revolutions go. Most of us, since we're not wizards who want to manipulate society to our own ends, don't think in reflexive terms, and so we not only fail to recognize the use of reflexive political warfare tactics against us, we also tend to fall for them. In this episode of New Discourses Bullets, host James Lindsay introduces the concept of reflexivity. Join him to learn to recognize the building of reflexive potential, the explosion into a reflexive environment, and what you can do about it.
