Episode #496: Bitcoin After the Hype: A Conversation with Paul Sztorc on What's Real

Crazy Wisdom

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop speaks with Paul Sztorc, CEO of Layer2 Labs, about Bitcoin's evolution, the limitations of the Lightning Network, and how his ideas for drivechains and merge-mined sidechains could transform scalability and privacy on the Bitcoin network. They cover everything from Zcash's zero-knowledge proofs and “moon math” to the block size wars, sound money, and the economic realities behind crypto hype cycles. Paul also explains his projects like Zside and Thunder, which aim to bring features like Zcash-style privacy and high-speed transactions to Bitcoin. Listeners can try Layer2 Labs' software or learn more at layer2labs.com/download.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 Stewart Alsop opens with Paul Sztorc from Layer2 Labs, discussing the connection between Bitcoin and Zcash and how privacy could be added through zero-knowledge proofs.05:00 Paul critiques early Layer 2s like Rootstock and Lightning, calling many “not real” or custodial, and compares the current scene to the .com bubble.10:00 They explore media hype, Silicon Valley culture, and crypto's cycles of optimism and collapse, mentioning Theranos, FTX, and fake-it-till-you-make-it culture.15:00 Conversation shifts to sound money, government spending, and how Bitcoin could improve fiscal responsibility, referencing Milton Friedman's ideas.20:00 Paul questions Bitcoin treasury companies like MicroStrategy, explaining flawed incentives and better direct ownership logic.25:00 They move into geopolitics and The Sovereign Individual, discussing borders, state control, and the future of digital sovereignty.30:00 Paul explains zero-knowledge proofs, Zcash's “moon math,” and the evolution from sapling to Halo 2 for better privacy.35:00 The topic turns to drivechains, BIP300, and Layer2 Labs' projects like Zside and Thunder, built for real Bitcoin scalability.40:00 Paul explains why Lightning fails, liquidity limits, and why true scaling requires optional L2s with large block capacity.45:00 They discuss the block size war, merge mining, and how miners and nodes interact in Bitcoin's structure.50:00 Paul breaks down the Merkle tree, block headers, and SHA-256 puzzles miners race to solve for proof-of-work.55:00 The episode closes with how L1–L2 coordination works, the mechanics of slow withdrawals, and secondary markets in drivechains.Key InsightsBitcoin's privacy gap and Zcash's influence: Paul Sztorc begins by explaining how Bitcoin lacks true privacy since senders, receivers, and amounts are visible on-chain. He describes Zcash as a model for achieving anonymity through zero-knowledge proofs and explains how Layer2 Labs aims to bring that same level of privacy to Bitcoin without introducing a new altcoin or token. The failure of current Layer 2 solutions: Paul argues that existing Bitcoin Layer 2s like Lightning and Rootstock are flawed—either custodial, inefficient, or deceptive. He compares today's crypto landscape to the dot-com bubble, full of overhyped projects and scams that will collapse before the genuine solutions survive.Sound money and political accountability: The discussion expands beyond technology to economics, as Paul highlights how unsustainable government debt and spending distort incentives. He believes Bitcoin could restore discipline to fiscal systems by forcing real accounting and limiting the political capacity to inflate or borrow endlessly.Corporate Bitcoin strategies are often misguided: Paul criticizes companies like MicroStrategy for treating Bitcoin as a speculative treasury asset instead of using it for real utility. He argues that investors should just buy Bitcoin directly rather than buy shares in companies that hold it, since intermediaries introduce unnecessary risk, fees, and opacity.Drivechains as Bitcoin's missing scalability link: Sztorc presents drivechains, outlined in his proposal BIP300, as the practical way to scale Bitcoin. Drivechains allow multiple Layer 2s to exist simultaneously, each optimized for specific features like privacy, larger blocks, or smart contracts, all while using the same 21 million BTC.Lightning Network's structural limitations: Paul dismantles Lightning's core assumptions, pointing out that it cannot scale globally because each channel requires on-chain transactions and constant liquidity maintenance. He calls Lightning a “Theranos of Bitcoin,” arguing that it distracts the community from genuine, scalable innovation.Merge mining and the path to Bitcoin's future: The episode concludes with Paul describing merge mining as the mechanism that unites L1 and L2 securely, letting miners earn more revenue without extra work. He envisions a Bitcoin ecosystem where optional, diverse L2s provide privacy, speed, and flexibility—anchored by a lean, reliable L1 base.

Klippet af Emil Holt Hosted on Acast. This episode has long been in the making. Back in August I shared on social media that I finally was having my mom on the show, though I kept it vague as to what she was coming on to talk about. This episode is a bit hard to describe what it's about, but at it's core it is a very personal episode for me. I'm joined by my Mom, my friend CJ and my friend Jamie to talk about the various memories of gaming growing up. And while this isn't focused solely on memories of a games, console or genre; it is focused on memories of gaming with friends.... kinda. In the episode I call it gaming in a social space, if that even makes sense. This episode is filled with stories of times when I would play games outside of the standard living room setup or the classic game night sleepover. It is about the times when video games were bigger than the worlds they inhabited on the TV. This episode is about Rocking Chairs, Halo 2 and LAN Parties.   Songs used: 1: Name: Donkey Kong 64: Jungle Japes (Vector U Remix) Artist: Vector U Album: N/A https://soundcloud.com/vector-u/jungle-japes 2: Name: Dragon Roost Island Artist: Mikel Album: Zelda & Chill https://gamechops.com/zelda-and-chill/ 3: Name: Sierra-117 Artist: Laura Platt Album: N/A https://ocremix.org/remix/OCR03198 4: Name: ReMix - StarCraft "Creep Colony" Artist: Cory Johnson Album: N/A https://ocremix.org/remix/OCR04269 5: Name: Melee (Smash Bros Remix) Artist: James Landino Album: Smooth McGroove Remixed https://gamechops.com/smooth-mcgroove-remixed/ 5: Name: Out of Time  Artist: Mykah Album: Halloween EP https://gamechops.com/halloween/ 6: End Song: Escape from the City (City Escape) Artist: Super Lofi 64 Album: N/A https://gamechops.com/escape/   Check out the Bit by Bit Foundation! https://www.bitbybitfoundation.org/ Support the Podcast! https://www.patreon.com/stillloadingpod Want to buy some Still Loading merch? https://www.teepublic.com/user/still-loading-podcast

KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast

In 2022, we -- the Brothers Moriarty -- sat down to discuss Xbox's seminal 2001 launch offering, Halo: Combat Evolved. We loved it, and we promised that we'd get to Halo 2 one day. Well, today is that day. Released late in 2004, at the back-end of Xbox's truncated lifecycle, Halo 2 is widely-considered one of the Xbox brand's highest-quality and most important games in its two decade-plus history. And candidly, we can see why. With expert gunplay, a fun sci-fi story, and a brisk runtime reminiscent of its generation (and which we frankly long for today), Halo 2 has us not only gushing about a title one-in-three OG Xbox owners purchased -- which is an insane attach rate -- but has us longing to play Halo 3, too, which we will certainly be getting to in short order here on KnockBack. I welcome Ray McCaffrey, Executive Producer at Steel Wool Studios. Hear how he got started in the game industry through a friend by joining a band with some NetherRealm artists who later encouraged him to apply for a short-term Assistant Producer contract job. Learn about his transition from IT, working with industry legends, and wishing he'd known to be more quiet and listen better. We then discuss advancing your career in Production, the importance of documenting feedback and results, and providing context to the team to build trust. Hear about the value of being calm and centered for others and the value it brings to the team and a company. Learn about the critical skill of being comfortable being uncomfortable, accepting change in the search for fun, along with the role of acting as a confidant to team members. Hear about being honest with yourself about your flaws, putting constructive feedback into practice, plus sharing feedback without being a jerk. Listen about how insufferable it is working with jerks, ways we avoided it, and what a relief it is not to. We then dive into the uncanny valley of console hyper-realism, go deep into God of War Ragnarök, how accelerated technology is now, and some thoughts on ChatGPT, AI art, and the futility of trying to predict the future. Hear why he's bearish on AR, and bullish on VR for the entertainment value, plus the way it's changed how we interact with each other at times. Towards the end we talk about a game cancellation that taught him how to be a compassionate leader, the importance of an open dialogue with your team when in a position of authority, the genius of The Last of Us, other game licensed content, Halo 2 Double Team, pizza, and accepting that nothing is ever final.  Bio: Ray McCaffrey is the Executive Producer at Steel Wool Studios, an independent studio based in Oakland, CA. Ray's been in the game industry for almost a dozen years and has worked on games like Injustice: Gods Among Us, Batman: Arkham Origins, Mortal Kombat X, WWE Immortals, Cardio Ex, Pulm Ex, Five Nights at Freddy's and more.  Show Links: * God of War Ragnarök website * ChatGPT website * TRIPP VR website * The Room VR: Dark Matter website * STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor website * The Last of Us website * Halo 2 Double Team Fandom Connect Links: * Ray McCaffrey Twitter * Steel Wool Studios website Game Dev Advice Links:  * Game Dev Advice Patreon - please help support the show if you find it useful * Game Dev Advice Twitter * Game Dev Advice email: info@gamedevadvice.com * Game Dev Advice website * Level Ex Careers - we're hiring for lots of roles! * Game Dev Advice hotline: (224) 484-7733 * Subscribe and go to the website for full show notes with links Learn more about your ad choices.
