Het Franse treasury-bedrijf Sequans heeft bijna duizend bitcoin verkocht. De opbrengst van ruim honderd miljoen dollar wordt gebruikt om schulden af te lossen. Daarmee neemt het bedrijf afstand van een strategie die het nog niet zo heel lang geleden omarmde: het oppotten van bitcoin als financieel anker. Sequans leek dat pad vol overtuiging te kiezen, maar verkoopt nu dus alweer zijn voorraad. De vraag is of dat een geplande stap is of een noodgreep in een tegenvallende markt. De koersdaling van de afgelopen weken heeft veel bedrijven onder druk gezet. Waar sommige spelers hun hand op de knip houden, gebruiken anderen hun bitcoinbezit om de balans te herstellen. Sequans zegt de verkoop te gebruiken voor schuldafbouw, maar de timing roept vragen op over het nut van bitcoin als reserve in een periode waarin de markt afkoelt. Het laat zien dat het aanhouden van bitcoin als buffer risico’s kent: het werkt zolang de prijs stijgt, maar kan knellen zodra liquiditeit nodig is. Toch is er geen sprake van een massale ommekeer. Microstrategy, het bedrijf van Michael Saylor, gaat onverminderd door met aankopen. Alleen al de afgelopen week kocht het nog eens voor tientallen miljoenen dollar aan bitcoin bij. Saylor leent daar zelfs geld voor, tegen extreem lage rentes, om zijn strategie voort te zetten. Terwijl Sequans dus afbouwt, vergroot Microstrategy zijn positie juist. Het verschil tussen beide bedrijven illustreert de uiteenlopende houdingen in de markt. Het lijkt bovendien niet meer genoeg om gewoon maar aandelen uit te geven en Bitcoin te kopen. Op de markt zelf schommelt de prijs deze week rond de grens van 100.000 dollar. Na een korte dip herstelde de koers, maar volgens analist Bert Slagter is het beeld broos. De bullmarkt staat nog overeind, al hangt die “aan een zijden draadje”. Ondertussen winnen privacy-munten als Zcash, Dash en Monero aan terrein. In wat analisten een ‘anti-surveillance boom’ noemen, stijgen de koersen met tientallen procenten. De interesse komt voort uit het groeiende ongemak over controle en toezicht in de digitale wereld. Of dat blijvend is, zal afhangen van de vraag of het ideaal van anonimiteit verder reikt dan een kleine groep techliefhebbers.
