Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. During today's episode, they highlight how we are only 20 days away from Election Day 2020, which will be the last day for voters to cast a ballot in this election. In a year that has been dominated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it should not come as a surprise that this election night may unfold a little differently than past ones. The timeline for certifying election results in particular is looking like it will be significantly longer than in past elections, which for Americans who are used to knowing the outcome of Presidential elections in particular by the end of election night, could leave us vulnerable to the spread of misinformation. To help Brent and Charlotte break down what to expect from election night 2020, and the ensuing process of counting and certifying ballots, they're joined by two guests from the Center for American Progress. They are Danielle Root, the Associate Director of Voting Rights and Access to Justice, and Erin Simpson, the Associate Director of Technology Policy. The war stories we tell both reflect and shape the relationship between American society and its military. In the second of two episodes, Alice and Jim explore how the stories Vietnam veterans told about their war have shaped America's experience of the war in Afghanistan. They interview author and Army veteran Matt Gallagher, about his most recent novel, Empire City, and consider how blogs and social media have influenced the ways we tell war stories, drawing on insights from counterinsurgency expert, Dr. Erin Simpson, and Marine Corps veteran and creator of the Duffel Blog, Paul Szoldra. Almost immediately after the American invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, people started to wonder if we were getting ourselves into another Vietnam. Eighteen years later, victory in Afghanistan remains elusive and questions about the limits of American power remain. In the first of two episodes, Alice and Jim talk with historian Greg Daddis, counterinsurgency expert Erin Simpson, and retired General Barry McCaffrey about the similarities and differences between the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan and consider how these conflicts have shaped the U.S. military and American society. Today, Josh and Erin Simpson look at the story of the laborers in the vineyard and we see an example of what God's justice looks like. Because of sin, justice and mercy cannot depend on us or our views of justice. We are broken and the world around us is broken. Thankfully, God is the most fair and His justice is perfect. A law change is desperately needed to stop non-Māori artists using Māori faces and traditional facial tattoos in their work. That's the view of a specialist in Indigenous cultural property, Aroha Mead. The issue has come to light again after broadcaster Oriini Kaipara - who has a moko kauae - posted online that a portrait of her face was being sold without her permission. There has also been outrage at a monkey statue with a mataora, or full-faced moko, wearing a korowai, created in celebration of Chinese New Year by former children's television host Erin Simpson. Samantha Payne, who painted the portrait of Oriini Kaipara, said in a statement to RNZ, that she apologised for any offence and hurt caused by her paintings, and accepts it was unethical and inexusable to not ask any of women she depicted for their permission first. The piece is no longer online. And in a statement, Erin Simpson who made the monkey statue, apologised for any offence that had arisen from her artwork and said she would be more culturally conscious with her future designs.

We can probably all think of somebody in society that might be considered an outsider or an outcast. We too were once outcasts but Jesus calls us to be with him and he calls us to love the outcast in our lives. Today, Erin Simpson teaches from Galatians 3 and we learn that we all have our common identity in Christ and there should be no division between “outcast” and “in-crowd”. We've all heard of the concept of dynamic duos, people who are well known because of something they did or do together. Well...there are some GREAT ones in the Bible! Duos that can teach us a thing or two on how to live in the world we find ourselves in 2019, a culture which is fairly relationally bankrupt. In this message, Pastor Matt Poorman & Erin Simpson explore a relational success story between 2 guys that truly is one to model. The story is of two guys named David & Jonathon. Two pretty amazing friends. This teaching includes discussion on how to pursue, press into, & experience brotherly love like David & Jonathon did, which will help us get more relationally rooted in 2019 and beyond! This is the beginning message in our series "Rooted: Success Stories for a Relational Bankrupt Society"

This is a very special Schoolhouse edition of the War on the Rocks podcast series. As many of you know, our Schoolhouse series is concerned with the intersection between policy and the academy. Is scholarship relevant to the policymaker? Is the academy preparing people to go into the policy world? Our guests grappled with these questions and more, telling their own stories of how they came be involved as scholars in the policy world, in the field in Afghanistan, and the private sector. We were joined by Frank Gavin of MIT, Erin Simpson of Caerus Associates, and Stephen Tankel of American University. Have a listen! Image: Marcus Hansson
