My guest today is Sam Hart. Sam is a developer, artist, and biochemist. He is Head of Product & Strategy at Skip Protocol and co-founder at Timewave Labs. He has contributed to the Cosmos ecosystem for years, and is also co-founder of Folia, a blockchain art collective. On September 1, 2023, Sam wrote a long and detailed post to the MakerDAO forums pitching Cosmos as an interesting option for the appchain aspect of Maker's endgame. Inspired by that post, this episode is an introduction to Cosmos for EVM devs. In this conversation, Sam and I discuss the major components of Cosmos: CometBFT, Cosmos SDK, Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC), VMs like CosmWasm, and client tooling like CosmJS. We also compare the design philosophy of Cosmos and Ethereum. Good starting points for interested builders are included at the end of the interview. Cosmos contributors recently released a new whitepaper that proposes major upgrades to the Cosmos Hub, the central blockchain of the Cosmos ecosystem. A community vote to determine whether or not the proposed changes are integrated into the Hub concludes on Monday, Nov. 14th. In this episode of The Scoop, Cosmos Co-Founder and Interchain Foundation President Ethan Buchman explains what will change if Atom 2.0 passes, as well as how these changes fit into his overall vision for how Cosmos's app-chain architecture will continue to evolve. According to Buchman, key to Atom 2.0 is the introduction of a security model which will allow new application-specific blockchains to bootstrap security by utilizing the Cosmos Hub's existing validator set:  “The kind of change that's coming to the Hub specifically will allow new application-specific blockchains to launch that use the same validator set as the Cosmos Hub and use the same stake that already exists on the Cosmos Hub.” Not only will the proposed changes to Cosmos Hub make it easier and more secure for projects to launch their own chains, but Buchman anticipates it will increase the amount of development activity on the Hub itself: “This for the first time, opens the door to a sort of more active development environment and development velocity in and around the Cosmos Hub, whereas in the past, the Cosmos Hub was very slow to evolve.” Episode 111 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded live with The Block's Frank Chaparro and Cosmos Co-Founder and CEO of Informal Systems Ethan Buchman. ✨ DEBRIEF ✨ | Ryan & David's Unfiltered Thoughts on the Episode https://shows.banklesshq.com/p/116-ethan-debrief  ----- Ethan Buchman is a fantastic human being, an Internet Biophysicist, Monetary Localist, and Co-Founder at Cosmos. In addition, he is President of the Interchain Foundation. Today, he comes on Bankless to tell us why we're wrong. This episode's dialectic explores the fate of the blockchain ecosystem—will we have a multi-chain sprawl of different protocols, or will we see a few chains with a power law distribution? We dive into the value of monetary premium, set against the opposing side of monetary clearing and velocity. And what does this all mean for security? The ultimate answer we seek is how to avoid turning the world into a dystopia. On either side of the tyranny spectrum lies anarchy and autocracy, so perhaps the answer rests somewhere in the middle. ------

Ethan is also an enormously successful entrepreneur: In less than three years, Cosmos has grown into a nearly $10 billion protocol that supports hundreds of different blockchains and over $100 billion in value. Investors in the original token offering for Cosmos ($ATOM) are up approximately 300x their money. As the “internet of blockchains” Cosmos is knitting together different platforms into one interoperable network. In addition, the DeFi ecosystem on Cosmos is growing fast, with Osmosis nearing in on $1 billion in TVL since launch.

Eric Kryski, CEO and co-founder of Bidali, sits down with Ethan Buchman, CEO of Informal Systems and co-founder of Cosmos, to discuss the Cosmos network and interoperable blockchains as well as a vision for localized economies and municipal sovereignty. Kryski and Buchman explore the challenges of building blockchain application layers on Bitcoin's and Ethereum's networks as well as achieving interoperability between protocols—even within the same network. Buchman shares how Cosmos' ecosystem is able to accomplish interoperability that restores sovereignty with an application-specific chain while providing a mature development environment. The work being done at Cosmos flows in Buchman's vision for more localized, interoperable economies, and he expands on this by breaking down his thoughts on community currencies, municipal sovereignty, and mutual credit systems. Filmed on May 18, 2021. Key Learnings: Buchman explains how Cosmos is aiming to become "the internet of blockchains" by allowing developers to build their blockchains in such a way that it will enable communication with each other in a decentralized way. He acknowledges how this sort of functionality within the crypto ecosystem would support economies that would become more localized and municipalities that become sovereign as diverse needs and values call for varied means of governance. Buchman argues that a shift toward localism and away from our dependence on globalization will lead to more sustainable, self-sufficient, and anti-fragile economies and societies.

The shipping container brought standardization to the way we move goods around the world. Similarly, TCP/IP packets normalized how information transits over computer networks. Today, blockchains remain siloed ecosystems and interoperability is practically non-existent. A new wave of third-generation blockchain protocols aims to change this. In this new paradigm, blockchains communicate natively and value moves seamlessly from one network to another. One of those projects is Cosmos. We’re joined by Ethan Buchman and Sunny Aggarwal of Cosmos. With its recent mainnet launch, we discuss how the network is running and address potential issues relating to governance and centralization of power. Consensus protocols are used to allow computers to work together. A consensus protocol lets different servers agree on the state of a system. For decades, these protocols have been used to establish consensus among database nodes, application servers, and other infrastructure that runs within an enterprise. More recently, new consensus protocols have been invented to The post Consensus Systems with Ethan Buchman appeared first on Software Engineering Daily.

As blockchain technologies mature, new protocol specifications are emerging, which take unique approaches to software design and how consensus is achieved. We have talked about Multchain and OpenChain in the past, but Tendermint promises to be a viable solution for many permissioned blockchain use cases. It’s design is modular, meaning that the application layer (smart contract) and the consensus layer are completely independent. This provides added flexibility and allows for business logic to be written in practically any programming language. In addition, its unique approach to consensus, a round-robin Proof-of-Skate algorithm, is much better suited for permissioned blockchain scenarios than Proof-of-Work. Meher and Sebastien talk to Tendermint co-founders, Jae Kwon, Dustin Byington and Ethan Buchman, about this promising new blockchain protocol and how it is different from other projects we’ve seen so far. Topics covered in this episode: How Tendermint came to be and how it has evolved since its creation Smart contract programming and the Tendermint Socket Protocol (TMSP) How Tendermint makes use of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Tendermint’s approach to PoS consensus and its scalability benefits Use case for permissioned and public blockchains Future plans and business models Episode links: Tendermint Tendermint for fast settlements Tendermint vs PBFT Tendermint specification This episode is hosted by Meher Roy and Sébastien Couture.
