We're living in an era largely defined by consumerism, social media addiction, climate change, and political unrest. Given all of that, it's really no surprise that many of us feel overwhelmed, burned out, and disconnected. That's why, today, we're thrilled to welcome Douglas Rushkoff, an award-winning author and documentarian, who was named one of the world's ten most influential intellectuals by MIT. Douglas's work tackles some of the most pressing issues of our time like technology, capitalism, consumerism, and human nature. He argues that modern technology isolates us instead of bringing us together, with social media algorithms and corporate interests chipping away at the traits that make us most human. To push back, he calls for greater focus on building strong local communities, mutual aid, and pushing back against a digital landscape that feels like it just takes and takes and takesIn this conversation, we delve into themes of power, agency, and community, discussing why awe may be the pinnacle of human experience, the importance of embracing mortality, and how localism can cultivate deeper connections and more resilient societies.Show NotesTeam Human PodcastTeam Human by Douglas RushkoffSurvival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires by Douglas RushkoffAbout Douglas RushkoffDouglas Rushkoff SubstackKeywords: Douglas Rushkoff, biophilia, technology, capitalism, nature, collaboration, competition, human connection, social media, power, agency, awe, community, local, localism, built environment, mortality, nature social constructionBiophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. Introducing the newest thing in higher (and we really mean higher — like look UP) education: The Flying Pig Academy. A dream of The Village Square (with support from Florida Humanities) for many years, it's finally aloft. The division in American society is big and seems impossible at times to address. The first, second and third rule? Like buying a house: location, location, location OR local local local. This is easier to fix than you thought. The Village Square is a proud member of The Democracy Group, a network of podcasts that examines what's broken in our democracy and how we can work together to fix it. Funding for this podcast was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In this episode, Ashley interviews husband and wife team Ben and Lucy about their eco-market in upstate New York, and Geoffrey from Longstory Farms about his planned local farm story in South Carolina. We discuss the importance of local commerce, challenges, and nuts and bolts approaches to competing in the market. Ben and Lucy Janssen both grew up in upstate NY and met at the local Community College. Lucy started her store Reuse Refuge in October 2020 with a friend while many small businesses were closing. The goal was to help provide the local community with non-plastic or biodegradable necessities of everyday life that help reduce domestic waste streams. It has since adapted and branched out its focus to maintain a foothold in the small city of Auburn's downtown. Going on its 5th year it has struggled to flourish financially as its vision doesn't prioritize consumerism but the more traditional scale economy. Ben works a job helping the developmentally disabled. The store hours are limited to weeknights and weekends when he's not working as they raise their 5-year-old. Ben grew interested in soil health and eventually peak oil. Ben met Jason Snyder in Joe Brewer's online regeneration class in 2020 and has kept in touch with the Doomer Optimism community since. Although Ben has grown more agnostic on peak oil or collapse perspectives he continues to read many books on the theme of industrial society and its effects on ecological and cultural shifts over time while supporting his wife's vision for her store. @reuserefuge on Instagram and TikTok @bennirubber on Instagram, Youtube, Substack, X, and Benjamin Janssen on goodreads.com Long Story Farms, LLC is a family-run pasture-based, sustainable farm just outside Newberry, SC. A surprising number of Catholic conversions in the last hundred years begin with one man: G. K. Chesterton. A modern Catholic favorite, Chesterton looms large in subjects as diverse as theology, satire, marginalia, philosophy, politics, and mystery fiction. Our guest today is Dale Ahlquist, founder and president of the Society of Gilbert Keith Chesterton. His own journey of conversion started with Chesterton's The Everlasting Man. Smaller federal government, an end to the fiscal madness, a reckoning for the COVID democide, an end to the endless wars and a return robust local control and individual liberty.Basically … we need to get back to the original framework of our American government which was clearly laid out in our Constitution. Zoe Gilbertson is a British fashion ecologist who is re-imagining the fashion industry from the ground up, literally. In an effort to curb the ecological harms of fast fashion, global supply chains, and relentless consumption of clothes, Gilbertson is figuring how fiber crops like hemp and flax could be grown bioregionally to produce textiles and, in the process, catalyze localized garment design, production, and distribution as well as bioregional clothing cultures. This vision is part of a larger, expanding movement of fashion innovators who are incubating "seed to closet" initiatives, traditional clothing crafts, mending and upcycling projects, and other types of fashion commons. Send us a textIn today's episode, we sit down with surfer Cory Spencer, a passionate surfer and co-plaintiff in the Lunada Bay (Palos Verdes) localism lawsuit. Cory shares the intense story of his attempt to surf the legendary Lunada Bay, a break known not only for its powerful waves but also for its notorious localism. On January 29th, 2016, after years of dreaming about this iconic California spot, Cory and his friend Taloa decided it was time to paddle out and ride the waves at Lunada Bay. However, what was supposed to be an exhilarating day in the water quickly took a turn. From the moment they arrived, they were met with harassment and heckling from the locals, culminating in a dangerous encounter where Cory was run over while surfing.Cory, who has been surfing since the age of 10, is a strong advocate for proper surf etiquette and respecting the unspoken rules of the lineup. He wasn't looking to cause trouble that day – just to catch a few waves during a solid swell. His experience sheds light on the issue of localism and its impact on surfers trying to enjoy the ocean.Tune in to hear Cory's firsthand account of this notorious surf break, the legal battle that followed, and his perspective on surf culture and localism. Was Cory simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, or does this story highlight a larger issue in the surfing community? How do we build the local futures we all know we need? What does it actually take to become a good enough ancestor? Or even the best ancestor we can be? Our guest this week, Helena Norberg-Hodge, has given her life to exploring the answers, and helping birth them into being. Helena Norberg-Hodge is one of the Elders of our culture. She's a linguist, author and filmmaker, and the founder and director of the international non-profit group Local Futures, in which role, she has initiated localization movements on every continent, and has launched both the International Alliance for Localization (IAL) and World Localization Day (WLD). She's a pioneer of the new economy movement and recipient of the Alternative Nobel prize, the Arthur Morgan Award and the Goi Peace Prize for contributing to “the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide.” She is author of the inspirational classic Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh, and Local is Our Future (2019), and producer of the award-winning documentary The Economics of Happiness. Almost fifty years since her journey began in Ladakh, Helena is still collaborating with thought-leaders, activists and community groups across the globe which gives her a uniquely rounded insight into howour local futures could look and feel - and the routes to getting there. I've known Helena since I was at Schumacher college - I rented a room in her house for a while, so we know each other well and I was able to press her in ways I wouldn't normally feel able to do with a podcast guest, so we could drill down into the details of her ideas for a different way of being. At heart, we need to get rid of global trade and move back to a localist economy based in sufficiency. The devil is in the detail, obviously, but if we have an idea of where we're going, we stand more chance of getting there. So I hope this inspires you to action. Please do follow up some of the links - and definitely watch this new film: Closer to Home - the vision it offers of a generative, working local future is beautiful. In episode 168, we're excited to welcome Mark Pascall, Co-Founder of The Wellbeing Protocol, an organization on a mission to build a world where local communities are empowered to support their own wellbeing. We discuss how their participatory grantmaking tool is giving communities the power to allocate capital, the role of quadratic and conviction voting mechanisms, the future of hyper local DAOs, why Web3 is a powerful tool to scale localism, and much more!✨Tell us your public goods story for a chance to win 500 $GLM!--Three Key Takeaways--One of the best ways to reallocate power from large corporations and institutions to local communities is by bringing communities onchain as local DAOs. This gives communities a mechanism to allocate capital, make decisions, and coordinate to limit the power of large institutions.Conviction Voting is a coordination tool that allows communities to collectively govern shared resources. In this system, individuals can vote over a period of time, and are able to change their vote at anytime. However, as long as an individual doesn't change their vote after it has been casted, it is a signal that you have strong conviction, and the power of your vote grows. In addition to the value of putting local community organizations onchain, one of the other benefits of web3 is all the open-source experimentation happening in the space. Since web3 is so new, it gives communities an opportunity to experiment at the ground level with new mechanisms for coordination and governance.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-168-the-wellbeing-protocol-scaling-localism-with-web3-and-hyper-local-daos--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--This episode was recorded on Zencastr!--Interested in starting your own podcast? And are newer surfers listening to advice that concerns safety in the lineup? OR are they brushing off tips and claiming the advice from experienced surfers as ugly localism? In this episode, we'll talk about the importance of communication in an evolving surf culture and growing lineup and how we can maintain and encourage community and camaraderie when crowded lineups lead to frustration. We'll also hear your confessions to this episode's prompt "What's the most memorable piece of unsolicited surf advice you've ever received."Join me, Laura Day and Surf Société Member Danyelle Carpenter for a critical conversation balanced with laughter and fun surf sister stories.Main Themes:The Good and Ugly Sides of Localism: "I think the differences between, between that good local and that ugly local is are you focused on getting yours or are you focused on community?" — Danyelle CarpenterGenerational Knowledge and Respect: "How do we get more access to that generational knowledge? How do we give more access to that generational knowledge, especially with, like, the lineup becoming so much more crowded and it's less of a conversation of numbers of people out there, because you can't stop that. And how unfair is it for you to be like, well, I started way earlier than you, so you shouldn't be here." — Laura DayThe Responsibility of a Surf Coach: "I volunteer and I teach people, new surfers, and, when I'm pushing them in, when I'm choosing a spot for this to sit, we're picking those spots that's our responsibility. It has been one year since Adam Symson, President and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Co., explained why he believed a “bold new approach to serving” the broadcast television company's local communities through a news initiative focused on “strengthening the economic sustainability” of its newsrooms while improving news coverage was needed. The changes were highly noticeable. Some great people lost their jobs, while others were welcomed in to the company. An initiative to train longtime print journalists for jobs in broadcast TV news was launched. There was some head scratching from competing station leadership in some markets, while in other markets Scripps was quickly earning accolades for its efforts. How is this “renewed commitment to community news” playing out 12 months later? That's the focus of this InFOCUS Podcast, presented by dot.FM.Joining RBR+TVBR Editor-in-Chief Adam R Jacobson to discuss Scripps' local news initiative today are two people highly engaged in the process.Chris Nagus serves as Senior Director of Storytelling and Content Strategy, and he's been traveling across the U.S. to help train and coach local news reporters. He's joined by Karen Lehr, who holds the role of Executive Reporter for “Idaho News 6,” KIVI-TV in Boise, Idaho. She has been with the Idaho News 6 team for more than a decade, moving to Boise from Orlando in 2013.

In this episode of the Plain Speech Podcast, Michael Clary interviews Auron MacIntyre, author of 'Total State,' political commentator on YouTube and at the Blaze. They discuss the current political climate, the influence of progressive secular humanism in society, and the importance of conservative Christians understanding and engaging with societal changes. The conversation also covers MacIntyre's book, “Total State,” which is a big Red Pill about the way politics works in modern America. They explore the concept of the cathedral, a decentralized network controlling cultural consensus, and the spiritual aspects behind political ideologies. Additionally, the episode touches on localism as a response to federal overreach and the spiritual forces believed to be at play in shaping societal norms and beliefs. 00:00 Introduction to the Plain Speech Podcast 00:10 Interview Preview: Discussing 'Total State' with RN MacIntyre 00:57 Addressing Pride Month and Christian Response 01:48 Introducing 'God's Good Design': A Book on Biblical Sexuality 04:28 The Interview Begins: Getting to Know RN MacIntyre 04:37 RN MacIntyre's Christian Faith and Background 06:29 Discussing Southern Baptist Life and Upcoming Votes 07:56 Exploring Political Commentary and the Journey to The Blaze 16:53 Understanding the Total State: A Deep Dive 27:03 The Role of Opposition in the Total State 30:30 Navigating Political Power and Ideology 31:04 The Evolution of Public Perception: Bush to Trump 31:39 Exploring the Quest for Power: Ideology vs. Control 32:09 Italian Elite Theory and the Political Formula 36:31 The Cathedral: Manufacturing Cultural Consensus 44:10 Localism as a Response to Global Narratives 51:19 Theological Perspectives on Modern Ideologies 58:49 Engaging with Media and Upcoming Projects Buy Total State on Amazon Follow Auron on X: https://x.com/AuronMacintyre Find all the rest of Auron's work here Get Michael's book, God's Good Design (Amazon, Canon+) #AuronMacIntyre #TotalState #Culture #Localism #CathedralTheory #PoliticalRealism #Family #Conservatism #politics

Scott Tillitt has a strong “why” around coworking. A PR/Communication Consultant by day, he also ran a not-for-profit supporting Localism and sees coworking as the intersection of community engagement, economic development, and supporting local. As a matter of fact, he's not very worried about his coffee game because the mile-long main street Beahive is located on has no fewer than six local coffee shops. Scott is a true coworking OG - he opened his first location in 2009 in Beacon, NY, a little over an hour out of NYC by train. Over the years he was a pioneer in experimenting with multiple locations and creative partnership agreements. He shared his coworking journey, lessons learned in his fourteen years in business, and he also gave us a little BTS on his Coworking Ambassador program. Scott runs his primary location, but his second and third locations are staffed by responsible members, a very part-time Community Activator, and some Coworking Community Ambassadors. If you're trying to figure out how to manage staffing in smaller locations, you'll get some good nuggets and perspective from Scott.
