Since we are around the 6 year anniversary of the IDW debut in the NYT, myself and political writer/podcaster (former rightwinger himself) Matthew Sheffield (@mattsheffield on Twitter) did a Twitter Space last week (14th May 2024) to honour this magnificent group of intellectual giants… We took an in-depth look at the history of both the ‘Intellectual Dark Web' and more broadly…the history of rightwing movements rebranding as new, exciting, different, transgressive or even ‘counter cultural'/ ‘heterodox' while they continue to spout the same orthodoxies and viewpoints upholding the status quo. You will never believe the SHOCKING conclusion …..are the IDW truly Heterodox or just another attempt at a rightwing movement rebranding themselves? We also did a bit of a ‘where are they now' segment, let me tell you dear listeners — they are not in the greatest intellectual shape, these Renegades of the Intellectual Dark Web… Please note this is a live event, so the audio is not up to usual podcasting standards - apologies! Tonight we are joined by DRx Wilke who runs the Holy Hermetic Heterodox Heresy channel on Youtube. The show is kicked off by audio of a "Pagan prayer to Thoth" from his channel of which he says the following about: We are the inheritors of the Gnostic Current as revealed to the seventh generation of Adam Kadmon in the Enochian Covenant, a recognized People of the Book as affirmed by the courts of the Abbasid Caliphate. We honor the 7 Noahide Laws of the righteous gentiles and keep the Golden Axiom: "To do good is only second, First do no harm." We preserve and protect the dwindling light of the mysteries and the cultus near extinguished at the close of Late Antiquity. Our messenger is the dual god Thoth-Hermes, called Hermes Trismegistus, first called Logos and Son of Man. We perceive Hermes Mercurius Trismegistus as the rightful heir to the Olympian Throne, as prophesied by the primordial Gaia regarding the line of titanic Metis. We likewise honor Metis' daughter Pallas Athena Minerva as Sophia to his Logos. We recognize the doctrine of metempsychosis, affirming the transmigration of souls, and acknowledge the unity of all as stated in the formula of the Emerald Tablet: “As above, so below”. Helen Lewis (The Atlantic columnist, BBC podcaster, pop culture decoder) has become a darling of the heterodox podcasting community (and this podcast; catch my previous Wild chat with her about THAT GQ interview with Jordan Peterson here), and, relatedly, a pet target of the extreme Right and Left's ongoing cancelling zeal. In this interview, I invite Helen to talk through several very online eruptions that are crucial for fathoming what the hell is going on in the world today. We cover the feminist-trans wars playing out on “TERF Island”; why Kara Swisher has fallen out with Elon Musk and why the Left failed the October 7 “Hamas test”. Mostly this is a conversation about the role of discerning dialogue when the extreme Left and Right are dominating the online arena.SHOW NOTESListen to my previous Wild chat with Helen Here's the episode I did with Hannah Barnes about the trans debate in the UKCheck out Helen's brilliant The Bluestocking SubstackGet hold of her most recent book, the bestseller bestseller Difficult Women, A History of Feminism in 11 FightsCheck out her Blocked and Reported episode hereWe reference a few of Helen's recent The Atlantic columns: The Progressives Who Flunked the Hamas Test; Is Kara Swisher Tearing Down Tech Billionaires? and Why I'll Keep Saying “Pregnant Women” If you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. What really happened in 1945? Explore how students grapple with historical events and figures to understand their distinctness and uniqueness. In this episode of Heterodox Out Loud, host John Tomasi interviews Professor Mark Carnes of Barnard College. Professor Carnes talks about his innovative approach to teaching history, which he calls "reacting to the past." He explains how this method challenges traditional teaching by immersing students in historical contexts through Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP).Professor Carnes shares the components of this approach, its impact on students' engagement, the complexity of character roles, and the unique insights it generates. By making history come alive in a way that traditional teaching methods may not achieve, "reacting to the past" provides a unique and engaging way to learn about the past.In This Episode:Teaching history through role-playing gamesEngaging students in historical complexitiesAdoption of live-action role-playing gamesConnecting with historical figures through gameplayThe transformative power of immersive learningFind out more about The Reacting Consortium here: https://reactingconsortium.org/Find out more about Mark here: https://barnard.edu/profiles/mark-c-carnes About Mark Carnes:Mark Carnes received his B.A. from Harvard and Ph.D. from Columbia. For the first half of his career, he was a very conventional historian, General Editor of the 17-million-word American National Biography (Oxford), and author or editor of dozens of books on American history. But around the turn of the century, he pioneered the Reacting to the Past program, where students played complex games set in the past, their roles informed by important texts. He has co-authored six games in the Reacting series, published by the University of North Carolina Press, and is the author of Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform College (Harvard, 2014).  He teaches at Barnard College, Columbia University. How 'The Coddling' Became A Movie: Ted Balaker and Courtney Moorehead Balaker turn a foundational book into a film

On podcasts devoted to free speech and so-called heterodox discourse, the 2018 book The Coddling of the American Mind is probably mentioned more frequently than any other. Written by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and legal scholar and Greg Lukianoff, who now heads the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), it is effectively the bible of the Heterodox crowd. And now it's a movie. My guests are husband and wife filmmaking team Ted Balaker, who directed the film, and Courtney Moorehead Balaker, who produced it. In this conversation, they discuss how they took a book about ideas and turned it into an engaging, poignant, and often very funny movie about mental health and how it intersects with higher education and campus life. They relay the stories of many of the young people featured in the movie and talk about the process of finding them. They also discuss how the movie ended up on Substack, where it's making history as the first film to stream on that platform. You can watch the film here. GUEST BIO Ted Balaker is an award-winning filmmaker, former think tank scholar and network news producer.  He co-founded Korchula Productions, a film production company devoted to making important ideas entertaining, and Free Minds Film, which uses workshops and project-specific consultations to teach independent filmmakers how to reach large audiences. Ted produced the feature film Little Pink House and is the director of The Coddling of the American Mind, based on The New York Times bestselling book by Greg Lukionoff and Jonathan Haidt and the very first feature documentary presented by Substack. Courtney Moorehead Balaker is an award-winning filmmaker, adjunct professor of acting, and co-founder of Korchula Productions, a film production company devoted to making important ideas entertaining.  She also co-founded Free Minds Film, which uses workshops and project-specific consultations to teach independent filmmakers how to reach large audiences. Courtney wrote and directed Little Pink House, which stars Catherine Keener as Susette Kelo, the blue-collar woman whose fight against eminent domain abuse went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Embark with John Michael Colon and I on a journey through the intricate world of heterodox economics as we unravel the legacy of Frederick S. Lee, a titan in the field whose ideas stand in stark opposition to the mainstream. Prepare to have your understanding of economic dynamics challenged and expanded as we dissect the limitations of neoclassical economics and its inability to foresee crises like the 2008 financial meltdown. Together with our distinguished guest, we'll navigate the turbulent waters of economic theory, scrutinizing neoclassical and Austrian schools while advocating for a cooperative, inclusive approach to integrating microeconomic theory within heterodox frameworks. This episode serves as a beacon for those seeking to understand the complexities of price theory, the historical evolution of economic thought, and the human stories intertwined within. We pay homage to the intellectual bravery of Lee, who sought to foster a diverse economic dialogue, embracing Marxist, post-Keynesian, and even Austrian insights. Through our conversation, witness the unfolding of a comprehensive economic model that seeks to harmonize the various micro and macroeconomic puzzles pieces—a testament to Lee's undying quest for an economic theory that truly reflects the multifaceted nature of our global economy. Our discourse culminates in a contemplation of the practical application of Lee-inspired theories, the dangers of dogmatism in economic models, and the need for a robust, multi-disciplinary approach to industry and sector analysis. As we close this chapter, we also open the doors to a broader socialist dialogue, with a nod to the importance of diverse historiography in understanding the wealth of nations. Don't miss our engaging exchange that promises a fresh take on the role of alternative economic paths and the vitality of heterodox perspectives in today's fiscal landscape. Zechariah Lynch, and more: https://www.orthodoxethos.com/blog _______ After years as the abbot of a Trappist Roman Catholic Monastery and well-known scholar, Fr. Placide Deseille and his brotherhood realized they could no longer be Roman Catholic and needed to come to the Orthodox Church. They had previously visited Athos before they realized they should become Orthodox, and later went back to Athos to be received by their new spiritual guide, Elder Aimilianos of Simona Petra Monastery. This is a portion of the complete account of Fr. Placide's journey to Orthodoxy. Learn more about Fr. Placide here: https://orthochristian.com/109855.html This account is found in "The Living Witness of the Holy Mountain: Contemporary Voices from Mount Athos", Translated, with Introduction and Notes by Hieromonk (now Archbishop) Alexander (Golitzin), pp.63-93. Photo in the middle of the thumbnail is Fr. Placide and his brotherhood on the day of their baptism at the hands of Elder Aimilianos. _______ Fr. Placide writes: On determining when to formally convert to Orthodoxy: "But how could we remain loyal members of the Catholic Church, and so continue to profess outwardly all her dogmas, when inwardly we were convinced that certain of these dogmas had departed from the Tradition of the Church? How could we continue to share in the same Eucharist while aware of our differences regarding the Faith? How could we remain outside the Orthodox Church, outside of which there could be no salvation and life in the Spirit for those who, having recognized her as the Church of Christ, refused to join her for human motives? To give in to considerations of ecumenical diplomacy, opportunity, and personal convenience would, in our case, have been to seek to please men rather than God, and to lie both to men and to God. Nothing could have justified such duplicity." "The monks of Mount Athos are often criticized for their opposition to ecumenism, and are quite happily accused of sacrificing love for truth. We readily saw, from the time of our first visit when we were still Roman Catholics with no thought whatever of becoming Orthodox, how well the monks knew how to combine a gracious and attentive love towards other people, whatever their religious convictions and allegiance, with doctrinal intransigence. As they see it, moreover, total respect for the truth is one of the first duties that love for the other requires of them.... Christian unity, which is as dear to their hearts as anyone's, can only be brought to pass by the agreement of the non-Orthodox to the integrity and fullness of the Apostolic Faith. It could never be the fruit of compromise or of efforts born of a natural and human aspiration for unity among men. This would be to cheapen the deposit of faith entrusted to the Church. In ecumenism, as in the spiritual life, the Athonite position is one of sobriety and discernment. If one wants to please God and enter into His Kingdom, one must know how to assess the movements of one's feelings as well as the rationalizings of one' mind. Above all, one must give up being 'pleasing to men.'" "We asked freely to be received by baptism, in complete agreement with our abbot [Elder Aimilianos], because this procedure seemed to us both right and necessary for Athos, both theologically sound and canonically correct." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/orthodox-wisdom/message

"As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ," (Gal 3:27) as the Apostle Paul proclaims. With Christ now dwelling in the depth of the heart, the battle against sin and the flesh is both similar and different than before baptism. St. Diadochos expresses with divine clarity the nature of the heart's activity and how the nous is purified and illumined as it battles against sin, no longer filled with demonic energy but now with grace and truth dwelling within. But from the moment that we are reborn through baptism, the demon is outside, grace is within. Thus, whereas before baptism error ruled the soul, after baptism truth rules it. Nevertheless, even after baptism Satan still acts on the soul, often, indeed, to a greater degree than before." "For when through holy baptism divine grace in its infinite love permeates the lineaments of God's image - thereby renewing in the soul the capacity for attaining the divine likeness - what place is there for the devil? For light has nothing in common with darkness (cf. 2 Cor 6:14). We who are pursuing the spiritual way believe that the protean serpent is expelled from the shrine of the intellect through the waters of baptism; but we must not be surprised if after baptism we still have wicked as well as good thoughts. For although baptism removes from us the stain resulting from sin, it does not thereby heal the duality of our will immediately, neither does it prevent the demons from attacking us or speaking deceitful words to us. In this way we are led to take up the weapons of righteousness, and to preserve through the power of God what we could not keep safe through the efforts of our soul alone." _______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. On this week's program, we discuss the economic impacts of professional and college sports on Louisville with Dr. Michael Bewley, a lecturer at Purdue University on Economic Analysis, Biometrics, and Supply Chains. Dr. Bewley has a PhD in Economics from the University of Kentucky. He also serves as President and CEO of the Louisville-based Enalysis company, providing survey research and economic analysis for many types of clients. Economic Impact is a weekly discussion and review of economic issues and topics at the national, state and local levels. There is a particular emphasis on items affecting the Louisville metro area and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The perspectives offered will be those from "heterodox economics." Heterodox economics, as opposed to orthodox or mainstream economics or "neoclassical" economics, is more eclectic in its approach to economics and allows pluralism of views and concepts. It also harkens back to when economics and political science were pretty much joined together in one discipline called political economy. Today's economists do not like the term "political economy", but Tom thinks they miss a lot by assuming that markets exist in a vacuum and that all consumers/people are either nearly perfectly rational or completely rational. Professor Lambert is in the Economics department at UofL and has recently been assigned to their equine industry programs as an applied economist. Prior to UofL, he taught full time for Northern Kentucky University in their Master of Public Administration program for several years. Before that he was with the economics department at IU Southeast for many years. Professor Lambert has a MS in economics from UK and a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs from UofL with a concentration in urban economics and economic development. Economic Impact airs on Forward Radio WFMP Louisville 106.5fm and forwardradio.org on Mondays at 6am, and Tuesdays at 11am and 7:30pm.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 16, 2023 is: heterodox • HET-uh-ruh-dahks • adjective A synonym of both unorthodox and unconventional, heterodox describes something, such an idea or belief, that is contrary to or different from an acknowledged standard, a traditional form, or an established religion. Heterodox can also describe a person or group that holds unorthodox opinions or doctrines. // The columnist's heterodox opinions on everything from dietary trends to the tax code made her a frequent lightning rod for criticism by the newspaper's more old-fashioned readership. See the entry > Examples: “[Ross] Perot's personality was mercurial, his leadership style authoritarian, and his views heterodox. He opposed free trade and abortion restrictions and supported gun regulation and balanced budgets. Unlocking the key to his appeal, which attracted Republicans and Democrats in roughly equal numbers, would not be easy.” — Nicole Hemmer, The Atlantic, 19 Sep. 2022 Did you know? Hot take: individuals often see other people's ideas as unconventional while regarding their own as common sense. On second thought, this take may be more on the mild side—in other words, closer to orthodox (“conventional”) insight about human nature than to heterodox (“unconventional” or “contrary”) opinion. Both orthodox and heterodox developed from the same root, the Greek doxa, meaning “opinion.” Heterodox combines doxa with heter-, a combining form meaning “other” or “different”; orthodox pairs doxa with orth-, meaning “correct” or “straight.”

Metropolitan Philaret's letter to Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, written in 1969 in response to ecumenical prayer gatherings and statements expressing heretical ecclesiology from both the Archbishop and Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras. Notice the royal path exhibited here by the great hierarch: when addressing the Archbishop and Patriarch he is very respectful, consistently using the given honorifics and hierarchical titles, yet stands firmly on the truth set down by the Apostles and Holy Fathers. Philaret writes: "Our silence might be construed as consent, bringing consequent confusion to our own flock as well as misunderstanding to the heterodox expecting our actions, especially in matters of public worship to be performed by all of us in conformance with our doctrines and canons. Therefore, an incorrect action made by one Bishop may be taken for something permitted by the whole Church, and those who are 'without' may form a misconception in regard to Orthodox doctrine. In a time such as this, when so much mutual interest is shown by various confessions, we may be found offering them a stone instead of a loaf of bread." "The Holy Fathers however always regarded common public prayer as the culmination of the conversion of erring persons to the true Church — the achievement of it; not the means to it. Common Church prayer is a manifestation of an already existing unity of faith and spirit." "In a speech during his visit to Rome in 1967, His Holiness Patriarch Athenagoras publicly declared in the Basilica of St. Peter that the Church should 'return to the solid ground on which the undivided Church was founded' as if since 1054 the Church has lost this foundation and as if before that time there existed no schisms. If, as Your Eminence and His Holiness declare, you are proceeding toward the restoration of this 'Undivided Church,' then this means that for you the Church is at present non-existent. We are also inescapably brought to the conclusion that Your Eminence and the Patriarch accept the 'branch' theory." "You are uniting with the heterodox not in truth but in indifference to it." An interesting one today with an extended interview/discussion with Konstantin Kisin co-host of the Triggernometry YouTube channel and Podcast and author of An Immigrant's Love Letter to the West. Topics covered include potential biases in the mainstream and heterodox spheres, media coverage in the covid era, debate within the heterodox sphere, the dangers of focusing on interpersonal relationships, and whether the WEF is really using wokism to make everyone eat bugs and live in pods. It's fair to say that we do not see eye to eye on various issues but Konstantin puts in a spirited defence for his positions and there are various positions where a two-person consensus is achieved. Matt was physically present but he preferred to occupy the spiritual position of The Third for this conversation, given Chris' greater familiarity with Konstantin's output. Prior to the interview, we have an extended, somewhat grievance-heavy, opening segment in which we discuss 1) the recent damages awarded in the 2nd Sandyhook court case against Alex Jones, 2) Russian apologetics and the heterodox sphere, and 3) Institutional Distrust and Conspiracy Spirals. Dare we say this is a thematically consistent episode? Maybe... in any case, there should be plenty for people to agree or disagree with, which is partly why our podcast exists. So join us in this voyage into institutional and heterodox biases and slowly come to the dreaded conclusion that philosophers might be right about something... epistemics might actually matter. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to his friend Claire Lehmann, founder and editor-in-chief of Quillette magazine, and columnist for The Australian. Though Lehmann's initial public prominence involved her key role in the “intellectual dark web,” publishing thinkers critical of identity politics like Coleman Hughes, John Wood Jr. and John McWhorter, Razib was especially interested in the fact that over the last few years she has gotten involved in various online discussions centered around cultural differences between her home nation of Australia, and the US, where the majority of Quillette's readers live. Razib draws Lehmann out about the fact that few Americans grasp what different views  Australians usually hold about the balance between values of liberty and equality. This gap has resulted in several clashes online fueled more by ignorance than disagreement. Lehmann also discusses the disintegration of the intellectual dark web itself, and the future directions that Quillette will take. She notes that one of the major fissures between her own views and those of many intellectual dark web luminaries is that many of them, like Bret Weinstein, are more reflexive dissenters. Outside of a few topics, like racial essentialism, Lehmann observes that the intellectual dark web was never a coherent movement. Finally, she reflects on the positives and negatives of social media, and how it has changed over the last five years of her editorship of Quillette.

In this episode of The Glenn Show, I’m back with my friend John McWhorter, and we have much to discuss. John joins me fresh from a day trip to Brighton Beach, a neighborhood in Brooklyn where Russian language, food, and culture abound. He talks about teaching himself Russian and the benefits of the Glossika language-learning tool. Then, in a continuation of last week’s conversation with David Kaiser, we move on to the history of redlining, which is quite a bit more complex than some recent commentaries would have you believe. A recent edition of John’s New York Times newsletter addressed the issue, and it received some criticism from the distinguished historian Thomas Sugrue. This leads us to discuss the problems of authority and perception that attend writing from the Olympian heights of the paper of record. From there, I give a progress report on my memoir, delving into my life, my break from conservatism in the ‘90s, and the difficulty of living in good faith. The temptation to “play to the crowd,” to seek affirmation by repeating the common sense of your tribe, is very powerful, and it can work on you in subtle ways. Heterodox thinkers like John and I have to check ourselves constantly to make sure we’re being true to our own thought and principles. In that spirit, we end on a question that’s sure to ruffle some feathers here at my Substack: How can we start seriously addressing questions about “systemic racism” and stop simply disregarding them as just so much wokespeak? As always, I’m curious to hear your thoughts! A New Home for TGSThe video for this episode is hosted on my new YouTube channel, which is now the home of The Glenn Show.
