This weeks episode was a great one, it was fun to chat with Mike about his decision to leave the classroom because he was teaching something he hadn't done and he wanted to prove to himself he could do it. He was able to successfully build and scale a large company.  He talked about his new book One People, One Planet and the steps to increasing happiness in our lives. Kallie Fell (MS, BSN, RN) started her professional career as a scientist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center utilizing a Master of Science degree in Animal Sciences with an emphasis on Reproductive Physiology and Molecular Biology from Purdue University. While assisting in the investigation of endometriosis and pre-term birth, Kallie simultaneously pursued a degree in nursing with hopes of working with women as a perinatal nurse. After meeting Jennifer at a conference, Kallie became interested in the work of the Center for Bioethics and Culture and started volunteering with the organization. It is obvious that Kallie is passionate about women's health. She continues to work, as she has for the past 6 years, as a perinatal nurse and has worked with the CBC since 2018, first as a volunteer writer, then as our staff Research Associate, and now as the Executive Director.  In 2021, Kallie co-directed the CBC's newest documentary, Trans Mission: What's the Rush to Reassign Gender?  Kallie also hosts the popular podcast Venus Rising and is the Program Director for the Paul Ramsey Institute. https://cbc-network.org

Donita is the Associate Executive Director at the Center for Constitutional Rights, where she has responsibility for the organization’s operational planning and provides leadership in the implementation of its strategic vision and goals. Prior to joining the Center for Constitutional Rights, she was co-director of Advancement Project Nationals’ Power and Democracy Program in Washington, D.C. and served in several management roles and strategic planning sessions focused on sharpening the organization’s program goals. She was co-counsel in multiple national voting rights cases, including the 2016 landmark North Carolina voter suppression case, NAACP v. McCrory. In 2008, she successfully challenged the lack of due process for 600,000 Ohio voters in advance of the 2008 general election and prevented their removal from the voter rolls. She has a law degree from Rutgers University Law School in Newark, NJ and is a Kinoy/Stavis Fellow. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University in Newark. She is the recipient of many awards, including the 2014 Garden State Bar Association’s Oliver Randolph Award, celebrating the legacy of a civil rights advocate who, in 1914, became New Jersey’s first African American admitted to practice law in the state, and the 2017 Rutgers Newark National Lawyers’ Guild “Arthur Kinoy Award.” During the university’s 250-year anniversary celebration in 2016, she was selected as a Rutgers University Fellow, the university’s highest award. Currently, she is the vice chairperson of the New Jersey Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and a National Board Member of the American Civil Liberties Union. Alice Green, founder and executive director of the Center for Law and Justice in Albany, talks in this week’s podcast, about structural racism that affects not just our criminal justice system but everything from our schools to our health-care system. Seven years ago, in the aftermath of a Florida jury finding George Zimmerman, a white man, not guilty of any crimes despite his shooting and killing an unarmed black youth, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Green wrote a paper, “Pathway To Change: African Americans and Community Policing in Albany.” In it, she details the decades of racial tensions between the Albany police department and the community it serves, going back to the 1984 police killing of Jesse Davis, a mentally ill, unarmed black man, in his Arbor Hill home. Police officers claimed they had to shoot Davis because he came at them with a knife in one hand and a fork in the other, and a grand jury cleared police of any wrongdoing. “A police department photograph uncovered years later showed Davis’s lifeless body clutching only a key case in one hand and a toy truck in the other,” Green wrote. Thank you for your patience with the sound. Adrienne Penta is truly a breaking money silence revolutionary! In this episode, Kathleen and Adrienne debunk the myth that women are less financially literate than men. Using statistics and her wealth of knowledge on the topic, Adrienne shows women and their advisors how to bust this falsehood and instead work at having a collaborative, and authentic advisor-client relationship. Take Aways: Gender does not determine your financial IQ. Men and women pass financial literacy tests at the same rate; however, women are more likely to feel as if they don’t know enough about investing or managing money. The real issue is not literacy. It is a financial confidence gap that many (not all) women feel that is the problem to be solved. As Adrienne says, “We need to close the confidence gap.” Advisors can’t read your mind. As a client, it is important to speak up and let your advisor know what is working and is not working in the relationship. While this may be uncomfortable at first, it is the only way a professional will know that they are missing the mark when meeting with you. Collaborative meeting agendas help. One way to aid in advisor-client communication is to work on meeting agendas together. One week before the appointment, the advisor can send a tentative agenda to the client asking for feedback. The client then has an opportunity to add to the agenda or let the advisor know if there is something that feels more important to discuss. This simple step takes very little but has a big return on investment for both parties involved. What sector of North Carolina’s economy is comprised of 380,000 people, pays $16 billion in wages each year, and generates another $200 million in tax revenue? Peg Pennington is executive director of the Center for Operational Excellence at The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. In her role as executive director, Peg works closely with member companies, managing and coordinating problem-solving consultations, site visits, and best-practice knowledge sharing. She is closely involved in new member recruitment and planning for seminars and forums. In addition to her role with the Center for Operational Excellence, Peg is a senior lecturer at the Fisher College of Business Department of Management Sciences. She joined Fisher in 2000 from Emerson Network Power, where she was manager of financial planning and analysis.
