Being an entrepreneur is tough! Start that same business in Cannabis and it's at least 10x more difficult. What about starting a business with your spouse as a co-founder and business partner? Maybe try to start an in-person events company a month before a global pandemic? Yeah… George & Kim Jage have done all that. Still love each other! And after two events in Las Vegas and New York, they are onto something disruptive, and are returning to Las Vegas this September! Kim is the energetically connected to the Universe type. Someone who would choose a college major to travel and understand the humans of this world better. She loves people, their energy, and sharing their passions. George is the stolen motorcycles, gas station weed, mushroom walks with undercover cops kind of guy, who unsurprisingly always got himself into trouble. In doing so he built a key skill of how to get out of it and that essential “make it work” drive that helped him start many successful businesses. Following her passion for plant medicine, their meeting at a Tea expo George was running was predicted by Marcus, Kim's naturopathic friend. The connection was immediate! The resulting story is how they came to start a journey as life and business partners, pandemics and all. It was recently announced in the NY Times (When Sky & Telescope Had No Limit) that Sky & Telescope's parent company F+W Media filed for bankruptcy. F+W will go to the auction block on May 30th, with a winner announced on June 4th. We can only hope that S&T will land well; either individually or as part of a conglomerate sale.----more---- For those of you who have little if any familiarity with the magazine, its impending doom may not seem all that portentous, but as both an amateur astronomer and long-time S&T Subscriber I can assure you that the loss would come as a grievous blow. The irony of it all is that while the magazine, itself, is profitable, the auction will ultimately be about preserving F+W as a whole. As such, S&T's future is anything but assured. To be clear, I have every hope that S&T will be purchased. What I'm concerned about is its ongoing relevance and viability; something at this point that's anybody's guess. As I say in the podcast "...we haven't figured out what..." we, the self-styled Friends of Sky & Telescope (FOST) can do to be of service, but there are plans in the works. Listen in and if you're interested in joining our rag-tag group of S&T enthusiasts, do reach out. (louis@squideyess.com).

On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about sewing magazines and television with my guest, Ellen March. Ellen March is the Community Content Director for the sewing division of F+W Media, including the Sew News, Creative Machine Embroidery, BurdaStyle, Sew Daily and Sew it All brands. She’s appeared on several television shows spreading her love of sewing, most notably Hallmark’s Marie Osmond Show and DIY Network’s Uncommon Threads, and she hosted Sew it All TV on PBS for nine seasons. Ellen traces her career in the sewing media industry from stumbling upon a job description for a graphic designers at Sew News (she wasn't a graphic designer, but applied for a job anyway) to pitching a PBS show, to overseeing a suite of sewing magazines and brands for F+W Media. One of the things that stands out about Ellen's journey is her willingness to ask for the job she wants and her eagerness to take on new challenges. Her approach is very inspiring. I ask Ellen to detail for us what exactly sewing magazines are looking right now. She explains how to write a good pitch (and what not to do) and why she feels that being published in a magazine is a worthwhile endeavor for designers. If you'd like to get on the contributors list for Sew News and Creative Machine Embroidery magazines, be sure to listen because Ellen shares the email address you can write to. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Sweetbriar Sisters. Welcome to this edition of the Real Fast Results podcast! Many of the listeners of this podcast are either authors or aspire to be such. In fact, some already have a book out through some sort of print on demand service or on Kindle. For the most part, they are self-published, and a lot of self-published authors struggle with is how to go about selling more books. Amy Collins is today’s special guest, and she is the former director of sales at Adam’s Media in Austin, Tx. She’s also a specialty sales director for the parent company F+W Media. She has been profitably selling to libraries since 1996, and in 2006, she started her successful book sales and marketing company, called New Shelves Books. Over the years, she has sold to Barnes & Noble, Target, Costco, Borders, Books-A-Million, Walmart as well as becoming a trusted partner and recommended sales consultant for some of the largest book and library wholesalers in the industry. Obviously, Amy has been very successful when it comes to selling books, but what really makes Amy truly unique is the fact that she was also a book buyer for a large regional bookstore chain. So, she’s experienced on both sides of the book-selling transaction. During her very, very sterling career in publishing, Amy has been responsible for selling over 40,000,000 books for small and mid-sized publishers. This is a great feat indeed. Please welcome Amy to the show… Promise: How to Get Your Books into Bookstores--Even if they are Print on Demand I want listeners to know that the world of independent and chain bookstores are changing. Special Guest: Scott Gould, Engagement Consultant and Creator of 'The Engaging Method' Join us as we discuss what we can learn about engagement from a handshake, and how to progress through the three levels of engagement to create the highest level of connection between people and organisations. Scott is a management consultant specialising in stakeholder engagement, an area he has worked in for 17 years domestically and internationally. He was formerly a church minister, which is where he formed his belief that the best engagement is shared meaning and passions. Simply put, Scott believes that the way we engage with each other with a handshake is a picture for how we interact and engage with any person, organisation, idea or product, and he has turned that idea into a unified theory of engagement.
